College of Business Administration and Accountancy Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction
Air Fresheners are a common household product that is used to create a pleasant odor and atmosphere in homes, businesses and even vehicles. They are known to contain a number of different chemical agents in order to neutralize offensive odors and create a more pleasant scent. Nowadays, there are air fresheners that are used not only for freshening the air but are also used as insect repellants, many commercially available insect repellent fresheners in the market. The commonly used commercial insect repellent is quite unaffordable and use chemical that may cause irritation and it can harm our health. The researchers thought of making a substitute that can help people and redevelop a product- an insect repellent and an air freshener in one. The researchers chose this issue because of increasing incidents of dengue fever cases in the country. They believe that this product will greatly contribute to the prevention of insect bites especially in younger children. Insect Repellent Freshener is a product with herbal oils, organic solvents and based-oil compositions that acts as a herbal insect repellent and a health care product to reduce respiratory tract disorders like Cold, Cough, Asthma, Bronchitis and Flu. And because its main ingredients are herbal hence it has no sideeffects and doesn’t affect one’s health. This product is herbal base which contain neem
leaves, bay leaves, cayenne pepper, salt and green apple scent. Thus, not harmful to the body and add to this, the ingredients are readily available. The researchers are aiming that it will help minimize the cases of dengue which is considered as a round disease and is fatal and to create an effective yet a new source of income.

Insect Repellents started before World War II and according to the University of Florida Topical insect repellent products are mostly derived from plants like citronella. The popularity of Citronella as a repellant actually started in the late 1800s. People also burned its leaves to repel mosquitoes, a technique which is still in use today. However, Chemical Repellents started in the 1920s and 1930s. Unfortunately in its evolution to its present formulation, several chemicals were added like dymethyl phthalate in 1929, indalone in 1937 and Rutgers 612 in 1939. These added chemicals were later found to be harmful to men. For this reason, in its modern form, these chemicals were “removed” in its ingredient. Current Repellents contain deet an
alternative to the above-mentioned chemical ingredients. As a matter of fact, 35 percent of Americans use deet-based products every year. The US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention also recommend other repellents such as picaridin. Some insectrepellent products still use essential oils, such as oil of citronella, eucalyptus, geraniol, soybean or cedarwood, as active ingredients. In 1948, the first air freshener was made and introduced to the people. In the 1950s, many companies began to add chemicals that counteract odors such as unsaturated esters, pre- polymers, and long chain aldehydes. Its discovery was largely was based on military technology for dispensing insecticides in a pressurized way technology known as chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellant. The product delivered a fine mist of aroma compounds that remained suspended in the air for an extended period of time. This type of product became the industry standard for air freshener until the 90s when CFC’s were later discovered to have a harmful effect on the ozone layer. Because
of this discovery, air freshener products moved away from the traditional aerosol sprays to the more environment friendly scented candles, reed diffusers, potpourri, and heat release product.

New Product Development Theory by Philip Kotler (1967) is an approach that sees new products, technologies, and innovations as a strategic weapon. The importance attached to new product development reflects the fact that an organizations ability to innovate successfully has been linked to financial performance. Within the media management and mass communication literature, there has been relatively little examination of new product development processes. Philip Kotler proposed that th ere are 8 major stages in “new product development.” These are idea generation, idea screening, concept development,
marketing strategy, business analysis, product development, test marketing, and commercialization. Idea generation includes: need/ problem analysis, brainstorming, and the other techniques subsumed under OB. Idea Screening uses a variety of product rating devices to lessen or limit the chance of type I (GO) error and type II (Drop) errors. Concept Development and Testing develop a specific concepts which would be aimed at specific target markets; start doing test marketing with focus groups; can use conjoint analysis; a research method for deriving the utility that consumers attach to varying levels of a products attributes. Marketing Strategy Development craft a marketing strategy plan which includes: target market size, structure and behavior, the planned product positioning sales, share and profit goals for the first few years, products planned price, distribution strategy and marketing budge, long run sales and profit goals and long term marketing mix. Business Analysis evaluates the marketing plan will special emphasis on sales, cost, and profit estimate must pass the business test criteria for further development. Product Development has gone technical. It has become imperative to develop prototypes using CAD-CAM to perform functional tests first followed by consumer tests. Market Testing big time testing with brand name attached and packaging developed. Controlled test marketing relies on a panel of real stores to carry the new products for a fee, sales are measured through scanners. Test markets are the ultimate way to test a new product, company puts forth full scale advertising and

Commercialization with commercialization one has to ask three core strategic questions: WHEN, WHERE, HOW. Where (Geographical Strategy) start out
regionally, or nationally, or intentionally. How (Introductory market strategy) marketing mix (ads, big party, dealer incentives etc.) The idea is to generate an efficient process to test new products. It is important to set clear standards for acceptance at each stage so that bad ideas don’t get through and good ideas aren’t quashed by conservatism. Very
few initial ideas ever make it to commercialization stage.

The concept of the study will be anchor on the foregoing discussion of the theoretical framework. The Input Process Output (IPO) model as illustrate in Figure 1 will be used to depict the concept of the study. The input box as shown in the figure contains the different variables that described the insect repellent as a business proposal. These are the profile of the project, the Feasibility implemented, and the advantages. The Process box portrays the various process of how data are gather and will be treated in this study, the assessment of the extent of the implementation of the feasibility by the various projects will be done through survey with the use of structured questionnaire. The Output box reveals the expected outcomes of the study which are the recommendation of the insect repellent freshener as a business proposal. It could also be noted in the figure that the output box is connected into the input box by a feedback loop. This is to show that if later in the future, the recommendations are no longer applicable, then, a modification or change of input variables will have to be done.

The following terms are defined operationally and conceptually intended for the common reference. Development pertains to the determination of the best techniques in applying new
device or process to production of goods or services. Feasibility the state or degree being easily or conveniently done. Financial Aspect is essential in making good decisions going forward. It includes all
the capitalization or sources if funds. Livelihood it refers to the program or projects launched by a community supported for
subsistence of the local government for the benefit of the residence. Marketability relative ease at which an item can be sold at for a price at which similar
items are sold. Management Aspect identifies the management team of the venture and judge
whether or not they have skills to run the business effectively. Marketing Aspect is the process of perceiving, understanding, stimulating, and
satisfying the consumer needs wants and expectations through the goods and services.

. Neem is known as “the village pharmacy” in India because of its healing versatility, and it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 4,000 years due to its medicinal properties. Neem is also called ‘arista’ in Sanskrit - a word that means
perfect, complete and imperishable. The seeds bark and leaves contain compounds with proven antiseptic, antiviral, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and antifungal uses. Neem has a garlic-like odor, and a bitter taste. neem has a natural mosquito repellant plant here are results of some of the field studies that were done on the natural mosquito repelling action of neem oil: In 1994 the the Malaria Research Centre of Delhi, India, tested whether kerosene lamps with 1% neem oil can protect people from mosquito bites. Neem oil clearly reduced the number of bites on the volunteers and also the number of mosquitoes caught. The protection was greater against anopheles species (the ones that transmit malaria) than against culex. A 1995 study at a field station the Malaria Research Centre in Ranipur, Hardwar, India, tested a mix of 2% neem oil mixed in coconut oil. They showed that applying that mixture to the skin provided significant protection from various mosquitoes. It worked best against anophelines, offering 96-100% protection. In 1996 the Malaria Research Centre of Delhi, India did another field trial with kerosene lamps in an Indian village. Clinical examination of 156 adults and 110 children did not reveal any major adverse effects after one year of exposure to 1% neem oil. neem disrupts house cricket molting, Yellow-fever mosquito Kills larvae disrupts molting toxic to larvae, House mosquito retards growth, repels, inhibits feeding, disrupts

Neem's systemic qualities affect their feeding behavior and disrupt their growth and development. Neem oil Repellent for insects such as mosquitoes, midges and flies this herbal insect repellent contains an extract of Neem seed oil known as Margosa. Neem Insect Repellent can be used on children, but make sure that it is applied by an adult and cover their eyes before spraying around the head. The Neem tree has a long history of use in Indian culture and Ayurvedic medicine. It has long been known that Neem can act as an insect repellent it was traditional practice to add a few Neem leaves to rice stored in homes to repel insects and other similar creatures. Bay Leaves
Bay leaf or bay-laurel is one of the well-recognized culinary leaf-spices in use since the earliest times. In the legends, bay laurel is depicted as the tree of the Sun god, under the celestial sign of Leo . Botanically, bay tree belongs to the family
of Lauraceae , in the genus; Laurus. Scientific name: Laurus nobilis, Laurel's thick and leathery leaves feature elliptic shape, shiny, dark-green and measure about 3-4 inches in length. Bay leaves give off a pleasing and sweet aroma when added to the recipes and can be stored for months. Its dried fruit (berries) can also be employed as a flavoring agent in the cuisine. . Laurel trees usually grow in tropical climate countries,

This leaves are natural insect repellent as they contain laurat acid. Applying extracted bay leaves oil will reduce insects’ bites and stings.\
Bay leaves are commonly used as one of cooking ingredients. Yet, bay leaves is considered as herbal plants that brings benefits both for our health and beauty because they are rich of nutritious substances. They are rich of vitamin C. 100 gram of bay leaves provides 46,5 mg of vitamin C that is the same as 77,5% of RDA. Bay leaves are the source of vitamin A that provides 6.185 IU (International Unit) or 206% of our daily intake. Bay leaves contain folic acid. In every 100 gr of bay leaves provides 180 mg or 45% of our daily intake. Bay leaves is rich of mineral, such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, mangan, zinc, iron, selenium and copper. Potassium is an important component of our cells and body liquid to control our heart beat and blood pressure. Meanwhile, mangan and copper are used for co enzyme factor.
Garlic
Garlic has been useful as a spice for a very long time, and it is often utilized for an ever-growing list of curative properties. However, the most interesting use for garlic may not be the most well known. Garlic makes a powerful natural insect repellent.

One treatment with garlic is effective for 2 weeks and can repel insects for up to one month. Moreover, garlic is easy on the environment. Parker states. Garlic bulbs contain an amino acid that converts to a substance called allicin when crushed, blended or chopped.
. When garlic extract is absorbed by a plant, biochemical changes take place in its foliage which causes it to actively repel insects. In short, plants are provided with a long-lasting case of ‘garlic breathe’ that ca uses insects to move elsewhere. However, the treatment is odorless to humans within minutes of application. Insects are naturally repulsed by the presence of the botanical extract. Therefore, they do not build up a resistance to garlic treatments. Garlic can also be applied to many sensitive trees, shrubs and turf that traditional treatments would harm The natural repellent nature of garlic makes it a perfect tool for keeping pests off plants. Garlic water is simple to make and easy to administer. It can be used on vegetables or on flowering plants. It would seem that the powerful compounds such as allicin which garlic releases are inimical to mosquitoes. They have therefore evolved to avoid garlic.
Oregano
Oregano is a member of the mint family and is closely related to marjoram, though their flavors differ greatly. However, when it comes to oregano sold in stores it may not always be true oregano it could be an imposter, such as marjoram or even

The word oregano comes from Greek words oros Meaning Mountain and ganos meaning joy, giving oregano the meaning joy of the mountain. Oregano is a hardy and bushy plant that can grow up to 35 inches high or 90 centimeters. The leaves of the oregano herb are dark green in color and oval in shape reaching a length of 0.7-1.18 inches or 2-3 centimeters. Blooms cluster at the top of the oregano branches producing pink flowers. Oregano is a perennial herb as a strong scent which is said to be powerful, spicy and camphorous in smell.
The experimental method was used in this study. Since the study was concerned in finding out the feasibility of using oregano for a mosquito repellant, the experimental method was the most appropriate to use.
Cayenne Pepper
Chili originated in Central and South America. It’s named after the capital city of the French Guiana, Cayenne. Cayenne is one of the main foods of the Hunzas in Asia, along with apricots and their pits, millet, and other simple foods. An interesting and

Cayenne is a shrub that originated in Central and South America and now grows in subtropical and tropical climates. Its hollow fruit grows into long pods that turn red, orange or yellow when they ripen. Cayenne chili peppers belong to the genus Capsicum and come from a similar cultivar of Capsicum annuum . Capsicum is an herb, and the fruit of the capsicum plant is used to make medicine. The pepper also contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, potassium,

provides

powerful antioxidant properties.

Many migraine sufferers believe smells such as cigarette smoke, cooking odors, or perfumes can trigger an attack, while others recognize various scents as part of the aura that signals migraine onset. They speculate that the green-apple scent may have induced a positive mood state in the 15 patients, and such a state would tend to reduce perceptions of pain. Sniffing green apples may control blood pressure, lessen migraine pain and help you lose weight. Apples may also reduce migraine pain. In the knowledge that research suggested some smells can trigger migraine Dr. Hirsch theorized the opposite could

Synthesis of the Reviewed Related literature and Studies.
Those organic plants have a big role in creating a new product which is the Insect Repellent Freshener. Each of it have their own contents and active ingredients that helps to identify what insects can be repel by it and how will those plants achieve the capacity to repel those insects. There are 5 organic ingredients that consists of Neem Leaves, Cayenne, Bay Leaves, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper and oregano leaves. The neem leaves can repel mosquitoes, they prove that neem has an active substance that is use for repelling mosquitoes it is also reduce the number of mosquito bites that can cause malaria. The bay leaves is the bitter plant is often used or it’s fragrance in cooking, but, bugs hate the scent. Bay leaves use to repel flies, moths, mice, earwigs and roaches. It doesn’t even matter if you don’t have fresh bay leaf plants, drie d bay
leaves use to get the same results it contains lauriat acid that reduces insect bites. The garlic is actually repels mosquitoes, but not from garlic breathe. If you have a high allicin (garlic's active anti-microbial ingredient) blood count, mosquitoes will refuse to engage

The oregano study was concerned in finding out the feasibility of using oregano for a mosquito repellant, the experimental method was the most appropriate to use. The dependent variable of the study is the mosquito, and the independent variable is the mosquito-repellant candle. Lastly, The Cayenne Pepper has an active ingredients called capsaicin the active ingredient in peppers that give them their heat, is something bugs instinctively avoid. Most insects absolutely detest the pungent component in cayenne pepper. Those authors prove that those chosen plants are very well studied and they prove it by testing all the organic ingredients and by means of gathering some survey or information to other people that using a natural insect repellent is a safest way and no harmful effects in human beings. The reviewed literature served as the source of information, applied and adapted in analyzing the data gathered and in interpreting the results. Moreover, those related literatures and studies helped to shape up the concept of this study. In addition, the studies conducted by different authors on the uses of organic plants as an insect repellent has provided the underpinnings of the concepts necessary for the development of the study.

This chapter presents the method of research, the research design, the respondents of the study, the locale of the study, the sources of the data, the instrument and validation, the data gathering procedure and the statistical treatment of data that will be used in the study. Research Design
The study will be focus in the feasibility of Insect Repellent Freshener as a Business Proposal. The most widely used technique, the descriptive survey will be employed by the researchers. As defined, survey studies gather information and relevant data about variables under study, and this includes correlation, comparative and assessment studies. A descriptive research design try to discover answers to the question who, what, where, why and sometimes how. The researchers will attempt to describe or define a subject often by creating a profile of a group of problems, people or events. Respondents of the Study
The respondents of the study will be the beneficiaries especially the people who are experiencing inconvenience from mosquitoes or other insects. Population and Sampling Design
The respondents of the study will be the beneficiaries people who are experiencing inconvenience from mosquitoes or other insects to seek the feasibility of insect repellent freshener as a business proposal. The said locations are the selected because of its proximity and accessibility to the researchers as well as the respondents who reside in the mentioned location or beneficiaries. The researchers will use stratified sampling, the process of selecting randomly from the strata of the population use in the

A questionnaire or actual survey form will be used as the research instrument of the study. This questionnaire, the main data gathering instrument of the study, is prepared by the researchers’ base on the business proposal of the product and the secondary data will be gathered from the internet. This instrument will be first consulted by the researchers to their adviser before it was finally approve. The data to be use in the study will be gathered from the primary and secondary sources. This instrument has two parts. The first part provides the demographic information of the respondents as to age, gender, civil status and sources of income. The researcher will use the Likert Scale in answering the survey questionnaire and with adjectival interpretation that corresponds to the description of each segment. The actual questionnaire is divided into two parts. The first part contains questions about the demographic profile of the respondents such as age, gender, civil status, and sources of income. The second part is enclose questions that asses the feasibility of insect repellent freshener containing the product, price, place, promotion, In the second part it will mark by a check and interpret as (5) Very Acceptable (4) Acceptable (3) Moderately Acceptable (2) Poorly Acceptable (1) Not Acceptable.

Validation of the research instrument
The questionnaire that will use in gathering the primary data is formulate by the researchers. The first draft is submitted to the research coordinator for checking. All comments are address to and the revise draft is then will submit to the adviser for further comments and suggestions. Data Gathering Procedure
Before the copies of the questionnaire will distribute to the respondents, the researchers ask the permission of the Barangay chairman to allow them to conduct the survey in their respective Barangays. The researchers personally provide the questionnaire to the respondents and assist them to answer the questions. The researchers ensure that all questions will be answer and that there is a hundred percent retrieval rate.
Statistical Treatment of Data
The data will be gathered is subject to appropriate statistical tools given as follows.
