Quick Star: The synonym for unlimited tubing connectors Quick Star is not just a fitting, but the name for a whole range of products. In fact the name says it all: it is the perfect synthesis of continuous and meaningful enhancement. Our designers are constantly working to develop the range for new applications. The grade of filtration is always determined by the application. Examples of permissible particle sizes in compressed air: 40 µm to 5 µm for vane motors, working cylinders, controllers and pneumatic hammers Less than 5 µm for regulators, valves, measurement instruments, spray guns Less than 1 µm for applications in the food processing, pharmaceutical and electrical engineering industries

It is also possible to combine a number of processes or to connect filters in series, for example two micro filters, whereby the second filter contains active carbon and acts as an adsorption filter. This filter then retains odours from oil or other solids. Incidentally most pneumatic working and control components will function normally with oil-free air since they are lubricated for life at the factory. However, if you are using lubricated air then once you start you must continue – you cannot go back to oil-free air!

In order to increase the service life of an active carbon filter, it should always be positioned after a micro filter, which in turn should be positioned after a preliminary filter. Active carbon filter cartridges should generally be replaced after 1,000 operating hours or if an oil odour is noticed.

Here are some tips on selecting components: Always size the service unit one connection size higher than is required for the maximum flow rate. Undersizing leads to pressure fluctuations at the regulator and to inadequate filter service life. Always mount service units at the coolest point in the system, for example on an exterior wall instead of in the waste heat zone of a working machine. Service units should never be mounted more than 5 metres away from the last consuming device. Otherwise the oil mist may condense before it reaches the actual consuming device if lubricated air is being used. Water separators separate any water droplets that occur in the network. Even the largest water separator will need to be emptied at some time. Therefore: make sure that you service your water separator regularly or, if in the project planning phase, consider using an automatic water separator. Filter bowls should only be cleaned using water, not solvents. Use metal bowls for harsh environments.


Always choose a larger solids filter than is necessary. Note the flow direction when installing the filter. Do not clean filter cartridges – dispose of them. If using an adsorption dryer, place a preliminary filter (grade of filtration 1 µm) upstream of the input filter to extend the service life of the input filter. Contact with oil will considerably reduce the service life of the drying agent. Finally the air inlet temperature should be less than 35 °C. Use a lockable regulator knob to prevent the pressure settings for the pressure regulator being changed without authorisation. Compressed air lubricators must only be filled with the lowviscosity mineral oil approved by the manufacturer. If operating large working cylinders (piston diameter above 100 mm) with lubricated air, use a filter silencer for the exhaust air. This dampens the exhaust noise and separates particles via a fine filter cartridge. Services units need to be serviced too – implement a maintenance schedule to prevent them failing prematurely and causing problems.

The illustration below shows the structure of a push-in fitting. These fittings are equally well suited to vacuum or compressed air. Steel retaining claws secure the tubing without damaging its surface. Vibration and pressure surges are safely

absorbed. The tubing can be released by pressing in the release ring. The claw is then lifted away from the tubing. This push-in/clamp function is used in many types of fitting.

Tubing ID in mm

When using tubing, people often make the mistake of combining different diameters within a string. This has the effect of reducing the flow pressure. Another common mistake people make is selecting tubing lengths that are too long. Spiral tubing has a higher pressure drop than normal straight tubing precisely because of its long length. The diagram opposite illustrates the pressure drop that occurs with increasing tubing length by illustrating the decreasing flow rate. An output pressure of 7 bar (effective) and a pressure drop of 0.2 bar were selected as fixed variables. The tubing is a PVC tubing with a sleeve and fittings at both ends.
