EXPOSITION The story entitled “The Plighted Word” started when Damian, Flora’s father and Sima, her mother was talking and discussing about the coming fixed marriage of Flora and Marcos, the nephew and heir of Don Luis who owned half of their province. Sima, a quiet wife only agrees to her husband. Flora doesn’t want to get married because she doesn’t like Marcos and Tonio is the one she loves. Tonio is a guerilla and Damian is not in favor with him.
COMPLICATION The wedding of Marcos and Flora is fast approaching. Flora’s brother named Pastor will go to San Anton to buy a pifia cloth for their mother. Flora let him give the letter to Guadalupe, her closest friend whom Tonio’s cousin. This message was telling that she will let Tonio consider Flora as dead and forget all about her. CRISIS A large contingent of Japanese troops reinforced by 3 companies of the Constabulary, raided San Anton. The village was razed to the ground; all men captured were killed on the spot. That night, the neighboring villages were zoned. CLIMAX Flora waited for Tonio to come before the wedding ceremony but he didn’t show up. Sima, her mother gave up on him. That’s why Flora has nothing to do but to pursue her wedding with Marcos. DENOUMENT After the ceremony, Tonio suddenly came alone. He came on foot, limping from a saber wound in his right thigh. He reached Damian’s farm a little after midnight. He stay at the gate and Flora, who had fallen into slumber, stared and open her eyes as though her name had been called. Tonio called Flora but she did not mind it. On the second time he called for her but Flora continued in silent. A third time Tonio called her and now Flora, weeping silently upon her pillow, knew what it was to be alone and she knew only by name. ENDING After a while, Tonio bade her good bye. Just as it was when Tonio has asked her to be his wife but Flora only ignored everything.
