Women's age-old s!am of trading se: for food and shelter( so long whitewashed by ta!it so!ietal a%%roval( had been suddenly s%otlighted under the stark glare of %ubli! s!rutiny. Women %rotested$ 3ilar was !ondemned as a traitor to her gender$ !o%ies of the book were !onfis!ated and burned by threatened wives and girlfriends. he he female !on game had been at last e:%osed( and the truth burned like the slash of a knife. he late >?'s and early @?'s was an era of abru%t and tumultuous !ultural !hange( and 3ilar might have thought she had tou!hed a nerve in younger readers. &iddily em%owered by a re!kless inter%retation of the new fad of feminism( women began to burn their bras and to !lamor for better #obs and %ay e;ual to their male !ounter%arts. he invention of the the birth !ontrol %ill freed them to e:%eriment with se:( to en#oy its %leasures without fear of %regnan!y. he sort of women 3ilar had been !astigating-housewives idling away their afternoons lun!hing with girlfriends and withholding withholding se: until their husbands bought them a bigger diamond ring or a fur !oat-suddenly seemed ho%elessly %assC. An unsto%%able tide of liberation seemed to have turned. 5esterday's whores would hand down their burnt-out tor!hes of greed to an enlightened generation of women who treasured men as %artners in life( not meal ti!kets. Se: had be!ome a !elebration( no longer a tool to e:tort money from men. A new age had begun. 4ut su!h o%timisti! ho%es were short-lived. his "new age" died a ;ui!k and %itiless death( a s;uirming vi!tim sa!rifi!ed on the altar of female greed. As business boomed and diversified in the late @?'s and early D?'s( and baby-boomer men %ros%ered( the fires of avari!e began on!e again to blaEe u% fier!ely in female hearts. he mer!enary o%%ortunities of their gender nagged insistently at these young revolutionaries( and their mothers' words haunted them with timeworn advi!eB why should men buy the !ow if they !an have the milk for free Ironi!ally the e;ual rights movement( with its em%hasis on individual freedom and gender %arity( had somehow s%awned an evil twin sister. Fueled by an all en!om%assing anger and avari!e( a renegade self-serving feminism had s%un off the old one( a greed-ridden %arody of a noble ideal. It san!tioned women to be!ome even more selfish and demanding of men than their mothers had been. )ow they wanted their !ake and eat it( tooB while they mar!hed for e;ual rights and e;ual %ay( they still e:%e!ted men to take !are of their needs( and they still offered the bait of their bodies to %lunder male wallets. She will swear she has no interest in money( yet she !allously re#e!ts anyone with an unim%ressive salary 8unless she thinks she !an goad him into a more lu!rative !areer9( while offering herself without !om%romise or !ons!ien!e to a big s%ender with a %latinum !ard( even if she is not %hysi!ally attra!ted to him. She is well aware of the effe!t she has on the boys around her( how mu!h they seem to lust after her ri%ening body. he more they want her( the more she realiEes the value of her !ommodity. She e:ults in her newfound strength( sensing its awesome %otential( and even !hu!kles haughtily to herself at the boys who ogle her when she wiggles by. She understands that she is in !ontrol-this is something she !an use to her advantage. It is the birth of an attitude whi!h will ruin normal relationshi%s with men for the rest of her life. eanwhile( om and *hur!h( witnessing the verge of her womanhood( begin to instru!t her to withhold se:( sermoniEing that her body is a "gift" whi!h she must save to give to "someone s%e!ial". 4ut it's too late.
