dri"en ci"ilization1 on the other hand+ it has to ena*le learners not to *e o"erhelmed *$ the os of information+ hile ,ee)ing )ersonal and social de"elo)ment as its end in "ie0 2herefore ‘education must 000simultaneousl$ )ro"ide ma)s of a com)le3 orld in constant turmoil and the com)ass that ill ena*le )eo)le to 4nd their a$ in it’0 %Delors et al+ )56(0 Curriculum change has *ecome increasingl$ im)ortant+ inasmuch as it is essential that hat students learn is rele"ant to them as indi"iduals and mem*ers of societ$+ in their )resent and future conte3ts0 !t lies at the center of educational )rocesses in ena*ling learners to *ecome not onl$ successful learning achie"ers at school *ut also res)onsi*le citizens+ e7ecti"e or,ers+ caring communit$ mem*ers+ and life-long learners+ in an increasingl$ interde)endent orld0 2his )a)er is intended to reect on the four )illars of learning+ as )ro)osed *$ the !nternational Commission for the 2ent$-4rst Centur$+ in its Re)ort %Delors et al( to 8N&9C+ Learning: 2he 2reasure ;ithin+ and to discuss their im)lications for curricular change *oth as guiding )rinci)les for and cross-cutting themes0 ' central argument is that if education is to succeed in its tas,s+ curriculum as its core should *e restructured or re)ac,ed around the four )illars of learning: learning to ,no+ learning to do+ learning to li"e together+ and learning to *e0 Rede4ning Curriculum and Curriculum Change Curriculum is a critical factor a7ecting educational #ualit$ and learning achie"ement0 Numerous research studies ha"e shed light on main factors a7ecting or accounting for learning achie"ements+ or #ualit$ of education0 !n an in)ut-)rocess-outcomes frameor,+ curriculum content and te3t*oo,s and learning materials are among the ma(0 2he concern to rene curriculum has *een at the heart of the orld-ide e7orts in im)ro"ing #ualit$ of education for all0 2here are "aried de4nitions of ‘curriculum’0 For one+ curriculum ma$ mean ‘the a$ educational content is organized and )resented in classroom and after-school acti"ities to meet di7erent learning needs’0 !n changing educational and de"elo)ment conte3ts+ curriculum is no longer merel$ ‘a con"e$or or )roduct of a )articular *od$ of ,noledge’ *ut ‘a d$namic )rocess of actual learning ac#uisition and in#uir$ of the un,non through teacher-learner interaction and coo)eration’0 From a )ragmatic "ie)oint+ curriculum could *e seen as *oth )rocess and )roduct+ com)rising all learning and other e3)eriences that the school or education s$stem )lans for its learners0 's education inuences and reects the "alues of societ$ it is necessar$ to recognize a *road set of common "alues and )ur)oses that under)in curriculum0 !t is im)ortant to ta,e note of the changing nature of curriculum de"elo)ment as ‘an ongoing )rocess aimed at organizing *etter learning o))ortunities and thus focuses on actual interactions *eteen the teacher and the learner’ %!?&+ /@@@(0 !t im)lies continuing e7orts in translating educational goals into a))ro)riatel$ designed learning materials+ acti"ities and o*ser"a*le *eha"ioral changes0 Aaried curriculum de"elo)ment models ha"e *een a))lied for fundamental reorganization or re)ac,aging of curriculum content and deli"er$ method0 ‘Curriculum change’ in this Resource Pa, is de4ned as ‘a d$namic )rocess in"ol"ing man$ sta,eholders and res)onding to di"ersi4ed learning needs as ell as social demands’ 8sing the four
