T HE DIXIE BREW JAZZ TM BAND was formed in the summer of 2004 to play for the grand opening of a microbrewery in San Jose, CA. All the band members had been playing Dixieland separately for years, but none of us had performed together. My search for good fake books that could be read on the bandstand was fruitless. As the opening deadline was getting close, I started generating “readable” lead sheets. By opening day, more than 50 original arrangements of traditional Dixieland, Blues and Swing era tunes had been created. T HE

HISTORY OF DIXIELAND New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park
Buddy Bolden Band (1905)
Even before jazz, for most New Orleanians music was not a luxury as it often is elsewhere–it was a necessity. Throughout the nineteenth century, diverse Ethnic and racial groups — French, Spanish, and African, Italian, German, and Irish — found common cause in their love of music. The 1870s represented the culmination of a century of music making in the Crescent City. During this time, the European classical legacy and the influence of European folk and African/Caribbean elements were merged with a popular American mainstream,

HISTORY OF DIXIELAND
The first jazz group to ever record, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, made history in 1917. The name "Dixieland" was most likely derived from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The recording was very popular and the band gained international prominence as a result. They were not the first group to ever play jazz (Buddy Bolden had preceded them by 22 years!), nor was this White quintet necessarily the best band of the time, but during 1917-23 (particularly in their earliest years) they did a great deal to popularize jazz. The musicians learned about jazz from their fellow New Orleans players (including King Oliver) but happened to get their big break first. In 1916 drummer Johnny Stein,
