CD 1 Track 16 Wendy: Welcome to this week’s show, everybody. With us today we’ve got Sean, a tourist guide living and working in Edinburgh. Hello. Sean: Hi, Wendy. Wendy: You’re here to talk to us about a popular street in Edinburgh, Sean. Sean: Yes, Princes Street. The architect who designed the street was James Craig. He was very young when he did this, only 22 years old. Wendy: Did he also design the other two big streets: Queen Street and George Street? Sean: Yes, that’s right. Actually, he planned all of the New Town – the streets, the gardens and the squares. Wendy: Which street is bigger? Sean: George Street. People started building the New Town in 1767. Princes Street was finished early in the 19th century. Wendy: And, why is it called Princes Street? Sean: At first, James Craig wanted to call it Saint Giles Street after the saint who protects the city. But in the end they called it Princes Street after two of the sons of King George: Prince George and Prince Frederick. Wendy: That’s great, Sean. Thank you. Sean: Sure. Bye, Wendy.
