On some Ammunition the colour of the sealing enamel have a certain meaning. e.g. on 9 mm ammunition, dark blue enamel tells that is the original m/39 cartridge, while red enamel tells that is the newer and stronger m/39 B cartridge. Blank and gallery ammunition in 9 mm uses light blue primer sealant. Note that other markings have occurred e.g. Tracers used to have a red tip
Som brass bought during WW2 were of sub standard. Machine guns might ripp case heads off during extraction. Boxes were marked "Endast för fredsbruk" (For peacetime use only) or "Ej för automatvapen" (Not for use in automatic weapons). Often the bullet is painted blue.
-------------------------------------------------------Swedish 6.5x55 The types of 6.5 mm ammunition used since 1972
sk ptr m/94 prj m/41 prick
skarp patron m/94 projektil m/41 prickskytte live cartridge m/94, bullet m/41, sniping This is the ordinary live ammunition, it was developed for the m/41 snipers rifle, but it eventually replaced the old m/94 cartridge. The m/41 bullet is a pointed boat-tailed bullet "torped". Silver-coloured bullets got a copper-nickel plated mild-steel jacket. Gold-coloured bullets got a tombac plated mild-steel jacket. sk ptr m/94 slprj m/41 skarp patron m/94 spårljusprojektil m/41 live cartridge m/94, tracerbullet m/41 This is an ordinary tracer (red), its ballistics it quite similar to the ordinary live cartridge out to 800 metres. It is lighted from 100 to 800 metres. The tip of the bullet is painted white.
kptr m/12
kammarpatron m/12 gallery cartridge m/12 This cartridge is used to train riflesquads to fire simultaneously, and to train NCOs in directing the fire of their squad. You use miniature targets at close range (~30m), this gives a quick and easy feedback. The bullet only protrude a couple of millimetres from the case, and have no core.
lös ptr m/14
lös patron m/14 blank cartridge m/14 This is a blank cartridge with a, red, hollow wooden bullet. On automatic weapons you use a blank firing device to make the gun cycle. The blank firing device will shred the bullet on exit. In the beginning there were no such device for rifles. Regulations said that without using the blank firing device, you were not allowed to fire at soldiers at a closer distance than 20 metres. This distance was later increased to 100 metres, but accidents still occurred. So a blank firing device for rifles was introduced in the 1950s. A warning might be in place; the powder of this ammunition is extremely progressive and will ruin any rifle - if used with ordinary bullets.
Live ammo is packed in brown cardboard boxes containing 20 cartridges. Blank ammo is packed in red cardboard boxes containing 20 cartridges. Ten cardboard boxes is packed in a green, sealed plastic bag with a handle (this is called one loaf of ammo). Four loafs are packed in a green masonite box with a handle, one loaf in every masonite box, with live ammo, contains two boxes with tracers. Cardboard and masonite boxes are marked with an eight digit number. First three figures is a code for the manufacturer. The two figures in the middle is the year of production. The last three figures is the number of the lot. One lot is approximately one million cartridges. The code for the manufacturer and the year of production can also be found on the case-head. 6,5 mm ammo could also be belted for use in machine guns. 250 rounds in each canvas belt, four belts in one masonite box. Older types of 6.5 mm ammunition sk ptr m/94
skarp patron m/94 live cartridge m/94
This is the original cartridge developed for the m/94 carbine and the Norwegian Krag-Jörgensen rifle. It got a blunt "ogival" bullet.
sk ptr m/94 slprj m/39
skarp patron m/94 spårljusprojektil m/39 live cartridge m/94, tracer m/39 This is the original tracer (red). It is lighted from 100 to 800 metres, and got a wite tip. Really old ammo got a red tip.
sk ptr m/94 pprj m/41
skarp patron m/94 pansarprojektil m/41 live cartridge m/94, armor piercing bullet m/41 This cartridge got a faster bullet (965 m/s), with a steel and lead core, it's got a black tip. Primarily issued to snipers.
sk ptr m/94 övnprj m/44
skarp patron m/94 övningsprojektil m/44 live cartridge m/94, bullet for practice m/44 This cartridge got a light blunt bullet that protrude eight millimetres from the case. It's accurate at 100 metres and less and was used for initial training becouse the safety distance was less than one kilometre. lös ptr m/94 lös patron m/94 blank cartridge m/94 This is the original blank cartridge with a green, blunt, hollow wooden bullet.
Older ammunition is packed in grey paper boxes, each containing two clips with five rounds each. 108 paper boxes is packed in a sealed thin box inside a wooden box with two handles. Some types of 6,5 mm ammunition for special purposes
blind ptr
laddblindpatron inert round The inert round got a nickel plated case with two grooves, and a green pointed bullet. The old inert round is called m/19, it got a black case with sevaral grooves, and a blunt bullet. sk ptr m/94 slprj m/41 red lng skarp patron m/94 spårljusprojektil m/41 reducerad laddning live cartridge m/94, tracerbullet m/41, reduced load This is a tracer (red) with a weaker load, half of the case head is painted black. It is used for spotting rifles. sk ptr m/94 högtrycksptr skarp patron m/94 högtryckspatron live cartridge m/94, proof load This is a proof load - only Armourers are allowed to use this cartridge - the case head is painted black. This load delivers a pressure of 4000 - 4500 atm, compared with the 3200 atm delivered from the ordinary ball ammunition. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes the text "Amf" twelve o'clock, this means "Ammunitionsfabrik" (ammunition-factory) and referes to the code six o'clock. According to some publications Amf means "Armeförvaltningen". This is dead wrong - if you read some of the Swedish Army's ammunition manuals they clearly states that Amf means "Ammunitionsfabrik". Besides - the full name of "Armeförvaltningen" was "Kungl Arméförvaltningens Tygavdelning" ('The Royal Swedish Army Administration, Ordnance Division') and that's abbreviated "KAFT", not "Amf". Older cases often have a crown twelve o'clock, this normally means that the ammunition have been manufactured by a state ammunition factory, i.e. Amf Karlsborg or Amf Marieberg. But it seems like the crown also appears on ammunition made in France and Germany - by SFM and DWM.
Sometimes an "E" twelve o'clock, this means that the case is made of brass-plated steel instead of brass. E
reads "Ersättning" which means substitution.
Sometimes the manufacturer twelve o'clock - mostly on imported ammunition made by SFM and K&C. The code for Amf Zakrisdal 'Z', and the code for Svenska tändsticks AB, Jönköping '31', could be found on boxes but as far as I've been told they didn't manufacture any brass in 6,5x55 - they probably just loaded some 6,5 mm ammunition. The code for VPT in Finland was '29', but this code have only been observed on boxes - all cases were marked 'VPT'. Of course there are other markings as well!

----------------------------------------------------Experimental projectiles To improve the balistic performance of the Mauser rifle, test were carried out in 1906 and in 1913. The 1906 experimental bullet spetskula fm/06 was an ordinary pointed bullet quite similar to the German S-Geschoss (the S-bullet) from 1904. A new progressive powder G. kr. III was tested at the same time. The new powder and the lighter bullet increased the muzzle velocity with almost 100 metres per second. The 1913 experimental bullet torpedkula fm/13 was a slender, pointed boat-tailed bullet, quite similar to the French Balle Desaleux. It was assumed that the light weight of the 6,5 mm bullet fm/1913 would make it suffer from insufficient penetration. Hence trials were also made with slightly heavier bullets of the same shape, in calibre 7,2 mm and 7,5 mm. The design of the Swedish 6,5 mm projektil m/41, adopted in 1941, was based on the experiences from the fm/13 bullet.

Notes: [1] The 40×365R m/48 case is also available with electric primer. The electrically ignited ammunition was only used with subcalibre guns for the 105mm Kan strv 101. [2] Same dimentions as the 57mm m/70. [3] The 57mm m/70 is of the same dimentions as the 57mm m/50. However the m/70 have electric ignition and the crimping is different. [4] The 84×245R m/48 case is also available as a 0,39 kg aluminum case.
[5] The 105×112R M/10 case was only used for the Coast Artillerys howitzer model 1910. [6] The 105×155R m/49 case originally had a mouth diametre of 105mm. To re-use old m/49 cases for guns fitted with the new m/40C barrels the mouth of the case was opened out to Ø110. [7] The base of the 105×339R m/50 case had the same diametre as the 105×155R m/49 case. [8] The 120×611R m/24 case could also be found with a length of 608mm. [9] The 152×1252R m/40 case could also be found with a length of 1205mm. Dimensions Calibre and length of the case, in milimetres. Often the calibre is the same as the inside diameter of the case. R = rimmed SR = semi-rimmed B = belted Rim Diameter of the case at the case head, in milimetres. Weight Weight of empty case in kilograms. Misc. RCL = recoilless (the case has no bottom) Electric = electric ignition When there were two or more types of ammunition of the same calibre, and with similar dimensions, the Army preferred to call them X, Y or Z. Dimensions and Weight from official documents, Rim diameters measured from various collections. If nothing else is noted the case is made from brass and fitted with an ordinary percussion primer. However there were steel cases as well for some guns and howitzers during WWII. Oddly enough there are two different 105mm cartridge case model 1910 - one 98mm long for the Army and one 112mm long for the Coast Artillery. There are also two different 105mm cartridge case model 1950 - one for the Army (105x339) and one for the Coast Artillery (105x778).
