Your Life, Your Choice I’m currently a senior in high school. This year I constantly find myself dodging questions from the adults around me, “What do you wanna be?” or “Does your dream job pay well?” It’s an ongoing battle and one I plan on winning.
Doctor, nurse, lawyer, psychologist. These are just a few of the career choices that are floating in my mind daily after my peers, parents, various members of my family, and even a few nosy neighbours shoved them there. Each of these individuals seems to think that they have a say in which career I choose to devote my life to. Everyone, that is, excluding myself. It’s quite probable that if I were to actually tell them what I wanted to do with my life, that I truly wanted to be a writer, then they would all just stand there laughing in my face. I now have a general idea of how I want my life to play out and the answer I want to give is becoming harder and harder to say, causing the whole “I don’t know yet” excuse I keep giving myself to become less and less believable. To be honest, it’s not all my family’s fault. It’s also the economy’s fault – the one that’s not exactly booming – the one I’m inevitably going to have to deal with over the next few years.

How can I go with my dream job if the ideal job pays twice as much if not more? Is waking up every day happy, eager, and ready to work, worth risking the bigger pay check of a top paying job? I think it is. I’m done with only giving the preferred answer. I’m done with letting the opinions of others mold and shape my own wants in life. Teenagers have a right to pave their own path, and not be told which one to take. Kayla Marie

I was 15 when I changed schools – from an international to a regular Portuguese Secondary State school. The change came as a shock at first, for it happened overnight. My parents decided that my school schedule in the 10th year was just way too heavy and that it didn’t make sense to keep on learning Maths, Physics and Chemistry, which were all compulsory subjects at the German School, as I was more interested in Humanities: especially Languages and Literature. At the time, I kind of agreed with them and felt both a bit scared and excited at the thought of changing schools. But when it finally happened… well, let’s just say that I remember crying in bed at night on those first few days. My Mum asked a former pupil of hers to take me under her wing and that helped a bit because at first we were always together and I didn’t feel so alone anymore.
