Judan 2007 By Sorin Gherman
Result so far: Cho Chikun Yamashita Keigo 1 - 0 in the 45th Judan title Judan is one of the top seven professional Go titles in Japan& +t means F1> danF in Japanese& Judan is an annual tournament! the previous ear,s title holder is plaing a best/of/five match with the winner of a ualification tournament& The first prize is the euivalent of 12>>>> E- dollars&
reviewing the games in great detail& 9ere,s the stor + heard about how "ho sensei became a self/appointed insei teacher .s he felt he wanted to give bac) something to the 'apanese Go after a fulfilling career in Japan! he approached the Hihon #i/in and offered to do voluntar wor) b teaching the official Hihon #i/in insei for one ear or so! once a wee)& This is a uniue proposition! as far as + )now / and the officials at Hihon #i/in were ta)en so much b surprise! that the felt obligated to pa "ho sensei a ver large fee for his voluntar wor)&&& The biggest "ho "hi)un fan outside of Japan seems to be Jan van Rongen! and his 4rida Hight 4iles= webpage is nothing less than a shrine for "ho "hi)un ou can find there most of "ho sensei,s games! including his insei games
The Judan title holder from last ear is "ho "hi)un! one of the super/top professional plaers of the 2>th centur& 9e is :> ears old! and studied Go in the #itani school& $orn in #orea! he moved to Japan when he was B! and became professional shodan when he was 11 9e holds a record number of B titles / and at some point he was the title holder for all three of #isei! 9oninbo and Mei'in top titles! which is still a uniue accomplishment& "ho sensei was also a self/appointed insei teacher at the Hihon #i/in for uite a while& +n 12 + was the Romanian representative for the 5.G" (5orld .mateur Go "hampionship% and + visited +go #enshu "enter (the insei center in "hiba! near To)o! where 2 ears later + was to live in as an insei%& + witnessed "ho "hi)un teaching Go to the insei / basicall plaing fast games with them! and then
The challenger is Aamashita #eigo! 2C! a student of #i)uchi Aasuro! who 'ust defended his #isei title&

Game 1 Game 1 was plaed on March Cth! 2>>?& "ho "hi)un won b resignation& "ho won the first game in an impressive manner it was a fighting game from the beginning to the end& 9ere is the final position of the game $lac) resigned after 5hite 1?2 in Dia& 1! which ma)es miai . (which saves some )e 5hite stones and force the huge blac) group in the center to live small with 2 ees% and something around $! which ma)es a huge territor for 5hite&
Dia. 2 5hite cannot save his stone in atari! so one obvious wa to continue is to sacrifice it as in Dia& =& There are several problems! though 1& 5hite worries about blac) . ne7t& 2& 5hite,s wall on the left is not perfect blac) can pla a tesu'i at $& =& 5hite,s wall on the left is too far awa from the lower/left corner to have much influence there! in case blac) plas first in that corner&
Dia. 1
8ne of the )e points in the game occured in the following position in Dia& 2! where blac) plaed atari with the triangle mar)ed move on the lower side& 5hat should 5hite pla ne7t

The )e here is the proverb F-acrifice two stones instead of oneF& The reason behind the proverb when we sacrifice one stone (which is alread in atari% we onl get one forcing move& 5hen we sacrifice two stones! we,ll get at least two forcing moves on the outside! which normall more than ma)es up for a few lost points&
$lac) created defects in white,s formation with 1> and 12 in Dia& : before defending with 1@& 5hite captures in a ladder with 1: and the dust settles here for now& 5hite is left with a cut at .! true / but compared to Dia& =! this one is much less of a problem for white! because the 5hite group that $lac) would cut with . is FwiderF! has more breathing space in the center&
Dia& @ shows what happened in the actual game& 5hite is not worried about $lac) $ in the previous diagram anmore! since that became a forcing move for 5hite& 8n top of that! white gets several forcing moves on the left side! after he plaed the double hane& 5hite,s position is ver thin! of course! with = cutting points! but blac) cannot reall do anthing about that because he is also lac)ing liberties&
.lso! white,s wall is so close to the lower left corner and it has such a great influence in that area! that blac) will have to be ver cautious when plaing in that corner&
Dia. 5
Dia. 4
The schedule for the net games Game 2 March 2 Game = .pril : Game @ .pril 1 .ll games are 1/da games! and the start at am Japanese time& 4or those who plan to follow the games live on +G- or "beroro Japanese time is GMT K &

%here to &tart The headline above is ma)ing sense in a lot of was& +tQs our first number we release and + had to thin) of how and where to start as well& +n addition itQs the main issue we tr to wor) out in this 38pening -ection& There are several different )inds of plaers& 5hat ma)es Go so appealing is that it provides the possibilit for a plaer to develop their stle! their personal stle& ;i)e everthing ever game has its beginning& There are certain theories about the opening and the opening is what we will be discussing here& -ome plaers! mostl those with pro strength ta)e their time with the first move& .mateurs on the other hand usuall 'ust pla their favourite moves without hesitation& 5e will tr to ma)e the beginning of a game more clear! which moves lead to what )ind of game! its pros and cons& 9ere + rel on some literature! as well as the help of some friends + made during m time plaing go and m own e7perience& + will point out some basic was to approach common 34use)i positions and some basic Jose)i& 6verone is welcome to ma)e suggestions and share their opinion! because in the beginning! there isnQt a 3one and onl move&
&an-Ren-&ei #
Dia. 1 This is the so called 3three stars position& . is the right approach for this position& The others are possible when blac) hasn,t plaed -an/Ren/ -ei but would lead to an inferior result at this stage of the game&
$
-an/Ren/-ei means roughl translated FThree stars in a rowF in Japanese& +tQs a common opening these das almost everone encounters it in their earl das& Therefore it wonQt hurt to ta)e a loo) at this 34use)i whether to learn something new or to solidif the alread )nown& +n this )ind of opening blac) focuses his full strength on one side of the board! waiting to see how white is going to deal with it& +tQs a strong opening but itQs a bit infle7ible and leads to a rather uncomplicated game&
Dia. 2 This are the most common possibilities for white after the pincer of 2&

Dia. 5 Dia. 3 5ith blac),s mar)ed stone in place! whites approach at 1 is the right move& .fter blac),s pincer white shouldn,t 'ump out because the influence which white builds with the Jose)i up to 1= is nullified and merel inefficient after 1@& Definitel a good result for blac)&
This is common Jose)i often seen in pro games& $lac) has a wea)ness between @ and B& 5hite . and $ are possible follow/ups which ma)e the game well balanced&
Dia. )
Dia. 4 The double pincer is an interesting option! but it can get uite complicated& This 'ose)i is said to be better for white because the mar)ed stone is oddl placed&
This is an alternative Jose)i& $lac) can ma)e the e7change . for a move at B before defending at 12 which isnQt reall necessar& $ and " are possible follow/ups for white&

5hite ? is the correct move& 5hite . instead would be complicated
Dia. * 5hite plas an aggressive approach again at 1 instead of #@& 5hite is meant to restrict $lac)s 3moo and influence& .t first glance this position seems to favour $lac)& $ut one tends to forget that white still has two corners occupied plus blac)s wea)nesses in his formation& 9owever! this is a rather unli)el position! because most plaers disli)e it&
Dia. , This is another position which ma occur after plaing the mar)ed stone&
Dia. 1-
Dia. + "ho -eo) $in (?D% showed us an interesting variation at last ear,s Go 5or)shop in Nurich&
This position occurs when blac) choses to ta)e the territor in the lower right corner& 5hite B is especiall good when there is a stone at the mar)ed place! otherwise it,s rather wea)&

Joseki: The '-4 (oint high a((roach outside contact
Dia. 2 +n this issue we,ll analze the outside contact pla against the high approach to the =/@ point& There are several possiblities of dealing with it& The basic Jose)i is shown in Dia& 1 below&
Move ? enables blac) to build a large wall over the lower side& .fter white can continue to push blac) and li)e this build a wall over the right side himself& $oth of the plaers still have the possibilit to either ta)e the corner! or reduce the corner territor of the opponent& 9owever this is onl the peacueful wa! Dia&= instead&&&
Dia. 1 .t first sight! blac)s position loo)s favorable& $ut ou musn,t forget that 11 is Gote for blac)! so white can ta)e the iniative& -o one might thin) about s)ipping blac) 11 and pla elsewhere& +f that happened! white would be ver happ with occuping this point himself& 8nce he has done so! blac)s corner is completel sealed and white can still appl pressure with D (which is sente because of "%& This would put blac) in a difficult situation& .fter blac) 11 the correct approach for white is at .! threatening the follow/up of $ which would ruin blac)s corner and side& +nstead of blac) ? there is another variation (see Dia& 2%&
Dia. 3 &&& shows the double/hane of ? and & "ompared the to the previous variation this one lets blac) built even greater influence& $ear in mind though! that white builds a ver strong position as well& The territor he ma)es is safe and ver difficult to reduce unless the whole board position is favorable for blac)& Aou ma have noticed that blac) comes out in sente in this seuence! but don,t forget white 1>! this stone could still become troublesome for blac)& .lso notice! that the corner territor is still not definite& How that we,ve gone through the basics! let,s loo) at some special/cases in Dia& @&
