Preview “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk ® Revit ® ” General The aim of this Preview Version of “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk® Revit®” is to enable the productive design of 3D reinforcement with Autodesk® Revit®. This particularly includes the creation of 2D plans and steel schedules. The current program version offers at his time around “80% functionality”, and serves the following purposes: §
The practice shall get an overview of the direction in which the development is proceeding.
§
SOFiSTiK AG and Autodesk shall obtain feedback from practice regarding any open feature wishes and the handling of the program.
§
In certain configurations, a degree of productive use may be possible.
“SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk® Revit®” is seen as an essential tool, generating the possibility for an integrated method of operation using the ideas of Building Information Modeling1. The term integrated, in this case, is understood to mean the creation of reinforcement plans by direct extraction from the complete three-dimensional model. SOFiSTiK and Autodesk are working continuously to further improve the software. The additions from SOFiSTiK AG will also become commercially available as a product alongside the next release of Autodesk® Revit®.
1
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of optimized planning, implementation and management, based on a virtual model on a computer, where all the events surrounding the entire life cycle of a building structure are interconnected with each other.

Workflow For the organization process of the workflow, a modified approach is recommended. With the classic 2D variant, the creation of reinforcement, its bar marks and tagging would have been performed in a single step. When working with “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk® R vit®”, these three basic steps are recom ended for productive sheet creation: 1. Creation of a rough reinforcement sheet 2. Inserting the reinforceme t 3. Bar marks and labeling One possible workflo : 1. Designer prepares t e rough reinforcement beforehand. 2. Structural engineer inserts the structurally required reinforce ent their self rather than producing complex sketches. 3. Designer completes the reinforcement sheet with bar marks, annotations, shape details, schedule, etc.
4
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk Revit 2013
Creation of a Reinforcement Layout Template As a starting point, a finishe
reinforced concrete building project i
Revit is
considered. In the first step, all required viewports for the reinforceme t plan are created, taken from the com lete model. Then a new sheet with
ppropriate
dimensions is created. All possi le required sections and views for the rei forcement layout should then be set at th desired locations on the sheet. All the subsequent working steps can then be carried out in a similar manner to usual dire tly on the sheet.
Figure 2: Definition of Keyboard Sho rtcuts
For a convenient meth d of working on the sheet, since frequent changes between different views and sections are required, it is recommended to define keyboard shor cuts for the activation and deactivation of the viewports. This setting can be made in the Revit Options underneath the user interface. Inserting the Reinforcement It is recommended to model he reinforcement directly in the viewp rts of the prepared reinforcement sheet. Any necessary help sections can be laid easily next to the sheet. Fundamentally, the
odelling of the reinforcement is carried out within
Revit, but using additional available means. This supplemental functionality is 5

provided by the three SOFiSTiK help commands “Copy to Element”, “Delete Reinforcement” and “Delete Barmark”. For the procedure of reinforcement modelling, the documentation in the Revit user handbook should take precedence. This user handbook and many other useful pieces of information can be found in the Autodesk WikiHelp at the following address: http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit Bar Marks and Tagging The real work for “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk® Revit®” begins with the bar marks and tagging. Shown below is a completed readable reinforcement layout to demonstrate how information may be required for the checking engineer and on the building site. In addition, A4 sized rebar and bending schedules can be created in and printed from the external SOFiSTiK results browser.

Operational Modes General In “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement fo Autodesk® Revit®”, a distinction is drawn between project related and layout relat d operational modes. It is recommende to decide which mode to use at the start of a project before proceeding. This choice can be made in the settings dialog withi the “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement” tab. Because many of the SOFiSTiK commands adapt automatically in their operation to the selected operation mode, it is very important t be clear from the beginning about the desired mode.
Mode: Bar marks per proj ct With the setting on “Bar marks er project” all reinforcement objects are ssigned to the entire project model. For example, in this mode the bar marks for the entire project must be unique. A steel and bending schedule can be created only for the entire project. This mode is recommended only for smaller projects with a manageable number of reinforcement layouts.
Mode: Bar marks per she t With the “Bar marks per sheet” mode, the reinforcement objects are attri uted as in conventional practice. In this
ode, for example, the bar mark numbers must be
unique only to the related layout (see: “Barmarks per Sheet” on page 11). Thus, in this mode, the rebar a d bending schedules are created per she et and are available individually for single c nstruction phases.

Supplied Contents General With “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk® Revit®”, additional useful content is supplied. This content contains
bending shape catalog in the form of Re it families,
as well as a SOFiSTiK reinforce ent project template. This content can b accessed in the installation directory “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk® Revit®”. In a standard installation, this directory path is as follows: C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\SOFiSTiK\Labs\2014\ReinforcementforRevit2013_x64\cont ent
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement Project Template It is recommended to use the SOFiSTiK reinforcement project t mplate in conjunction with this program.
his project template was developed specifically for
the creation of reinforcement l youts. In this project template, the entire supplied content is already integrated. Additionally, the current wire mesh program o DIN 488 is ready for use. In this preview version,, the mesh types with smaller bar diameters cannot be considered in the verlap area. While this has no effect on the steel quantity in the laid r inforcement cross section, it results o ly in an incorrect display representation.
Bending Shape Families In these Revit families, there is a specially created selection of bending s apes with which the majority of reinforce ent tasks can be covered. If the supplied project template can’t be used, the b nding shape families can also be load d into the current project as required.

Command Description A detailed description of the ra ge of individual functions in the preview version of “SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for A todesk® Revit®” can be found below.
Copy to Element “Copy to Element” is a help
ommand for the modelling of reinforcement. The
command provides the possibili y to easily copy the entire defined reinforcement of an element to an identical or similar element. The copied reinforcem nt will be assigned automatically to the ne
element.
The reinforcement’s g ometry will not be changed when copied. For this reason, a check of th concrete cover will be placed nearby hen the dimensions of the targ t element deviate from the original.
Delete Reinforcement “Delete Reinforcement” is a help command for the modelling of reinforc ment. The command deletes all reinforcem nt from a selected element.
Delete Barmark “Delete Barmark” is a help c mmand for the modelling of reinforce ent. The command deletes all instances of a reinforcement bar mark. Its operatio will differ depending on the selected mo e of operation (see “Operational Modes , page 7), whether the command affects the entire project or only a single she t. For the selection of bar marks to be deleted, either the laid reinforcement or its t gging can be selected with the mouse.
Set Barmarks Using the “Set Barmarks” command, bar mark numbers can be added to rebars and wire meshes.
The action of t e command will affect, according to the selected
operational mode (see “Operati nal Modes”, page 7), either the entire project or only a single sheet.
9
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk Revit 2013
Rebar sets with identically de ined shapes, materials and bar diamet rs will be automatically detected and assi ned the same bar mark. The bar mark n mbers will be automatically assigned so that they follow on directly from the largest previously defined bar mark number. On th other hand, if “Renew all Bar Marks” is checked, all of the previously defined bar mark numbers will be overwritten and eassigned contiguously.
Figure 4: Bar Marks
As shown in the dialog in Figure 4, a start value and increment can be defined for the bar mark numbering. In the “Bar marks per heet” operational mode, only the bar marks for the reinforcement defined in the selected sheet will be numbered. herefore, for this operational mo e, the sheet assignment must already be one.
Renumber Barmark With the command “Renumber Barmark”, a single reinforcement bar mark will be assigned a defined bar mark nu ber. The bar mark number following the largest bar mark number defined already in the project will be offered as the suggeste value.
10
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk Revit 2013
Figure 5: Renumber Barmark
Barmarks per Sheet “Barmarks per Sheet” is an essential command in the operational mode “Barmarks per Sheet” (see “Mode: Bar mar s per sheet“, page 7). With this comman , the rebar set becomes assigned to a sp cific sheet. In the properties of the reb r set, the related sheet will be displayed with the parameter “SOF_Sheet”. In the “Barmarks per sheet” o erational mode, the SOFiSTiK commands “Delete Barmark”, “Set Barmarks”, “Re umber Barmark” and “Create Schedule” check the sheet assignment of the affected rebar sets. The parameter SOF_Sheet only provides information about the assigned sheet. A change of th sheet assignment of a rebar set is onl possible with the command “Barmarks per Sheet”.
Settings In the settings, project-wide d finitions such as the desired dialog language or operational mode (see “Operati nal Modes“, page 7) can be made. Simi larly, userspecific adjustments can be ma e for distances and representations. In a dition, it is possible to define the default fa ilies that are to be used for the tagging commands.

Figure 6: Settings
A detailed description of the individual setting possibilities can be found in the descriptions of the corresponding commands.
Tag All With the command Tag All, all existing reinforcement tags will be deleted from the active view and then recreated. The tagging is done according to t he settings given in the Settings (see “Settings”, page 11). The following settings can be made there by the selection of the tagging family and family types to be used: §
Distance of tag from element
§
Distance from single tags to linear tags
§
Distance between linear tags
§
Maximum quantity of rebar sets for pointer tags
§
Max. Allowable angle between the laid line and the view plane.
12
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk Revit 2013
Figure 7: SOFiSTiK Reinforcement T agging
The tagging family “SOFiSTiK_Beschriftung_Bewehrung.rfa”, offers a set of prefabricated family types for individual desire of output detail.
Tag Missing If existing tags have been mov d to a desired position, or the level of o tput detail was changed, use of the command “Tag Missing” is recommended. This command tags only the reinforcement w ich has not yet been tagged. As oppo ed to the command “Tag All”, all modifications previously carried out are retained by existing labels. Generally, the same tagging settings as for the command “Tag All” apply (see “Tag All”, page 12).
Rebar Shape Detail With the command Rebar Shape Detail, it is now possible to extract a bar bending shape to place on the sheet. After the selection of a rebar set, a dimensio ed sketch in the dimensions of the selecte bending shape is generated as a 2D detail family. This rebar shape detail is placed together with a tag at a selected locati n point on the sheet. The level of output
etail for the label can be set independe ntly of the
reinforcement tagging. When using the tagging famil „SOFiSTiK_Beschriftung_Auszug.rfa“, a choice of levels of output detail in the form of prefabricated family types is available.
13
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk Revit 2013
In contrast to the schedule, rebar shape details for 3D bending forms a d bending forms of key number 99 are not et supported.
Figure 8: Example of Rebar Shape D etail
At present, the comma d creates incorrect rebar shape details for bending shapes with curve . This also affects the bending shapes “Winkelstab_Radius” and “Schlaufe_Offen” from the supplied OFiSTiK bending form catalog.
Create Schedule With the command “Create Sc edule”, a document will be created to DIN EN ISO 3766 for the description of reb r and mesh rebar sets. According to the selected operational mode (see “Operati nal Modes”, page 7), the command appli s either to the entire project or to the individual sheet. The schedules will be op ned as a printable document in A4 format in the SOFiSTiK results browser.
Insert Schedule According to which operational
ode is selected (see “Operational Mode ”, page 7)
and the active sheet, this command inserts the corresponding schedul
from the
project directory into the sheet. I a schedule is already available, this will be detected 14
SOFiSTiK Reinforcement for Autodesk Revit 2013
automatically and updated. To be able to use this command, a schedule must first be created (see “Create Schedule” age 14). Ensure that the creation of an external schedule in the project directory is enabled in the SOFiS iK results browser. This setting can be made by checking the option “ xport Graphics (.dxf)” in the settings on the STLI tab.
