1. Introduction
“Nature is
source of
new horizons”
1.2 Siemens Fractus Strategic Alliance New Generation Antenna Business is based on the global alliance between Siemens and Fractus for the development and commercialization of reduced-size, multiple-band and high-performance base station antennas for the telecommunications infrastructure market. Our objective is to become worldwide market leaders in the supply of integral radiating solutions for limited environmental impact mobile radio infrastructures, with the implementation of the most advanced wireless technologies. Fractus’ role in this alliance is to design miniature and multiple-band antennas for wireless applications that are easy to integrate and, at the same time, provide high performance. To achieve this, Fractus uses the unique space-filling and multi-level properties of fractals as the backbone of its technology. Fractus has already proved that its antennas comply with the most advanced standards for mobile phones, BluetoothTM and WLAN devices, base stations and military applications.
Siemens has created an International Centre of Competence (CoC) based in Spain. This CoC, is responsible for the Global Management of the New Generation Antenna Project. The Siemens R&D team coordinates the whole development process, leads the design of value-added solutions and assures product quality and manufacturability. Radiating Systems are produced at the Siemens Mobile factory premises in Zaragoza. International business development is supported by the Siemens Mobile sales network.

2.1.1.2. Unique selling proposition of Siemens Dual Band Antennas Fractal technology allows independence between bands without any modification of array dimensions, thus preserving minimum visual impact. In the market for Dual Band Antennas with 4 connectors (independence of bands for Planning flexibility), Siemens Dual Band Antennas have the smallest surface area. These mechanical features are very important from the installation point of view. The low surface implies a low wind load leading to a reduction in the mechanical overweight in the masts. As antennas do not completely behave as linear transducers with respect to the input power, the internal networks may produce some harmful distortion, interfering the other band in the array. Siemens Dual Band Antennas incorporate an electrical down-tilt which is independent in each band. This configuration achieves the maximum uniformity of coverage in both polarizations, thus reducing the possibility of harmful distortions (intermodulation products).
Merit Factor F The F factor takes into account the most relevant parameters that impact on BTS antenna design: vertical beamwidth (footprint, coverage), secondary lobes in the “blind zone” (interference) and surface (visual impact and wind load).

2.1.2.2. Unique Selling Proposition of Siemens SlimSite®
With its additional advantages to stand-alone antenna products, Siemens SlimSite® is the right solution for new site acquisition or existing site revamp, providing radiating system, mast and aesthetic solutions in just one standard product. It is a best-in-class product in terms of both performance and reduced visual impact. The integration capabilities of fractal technology offer three dual band cross polar sectors with variable tilt in a cylinder of just 25 cm in diameter.
The great technological challenge of Siemens SlimSite® situates our offer way ahead of the current state of the art of our competitors. Check bellow for the diameter reduction of Siemens SlimSite® in comparison to the reference competitor (both products include mast with variable height, azimuth adjustments +/- 10º, VET prepared for RET and covers to hide feeders and tower amplifiers).
The radiating system is provided integrated within a modular mast, offering different antenna heights (2.2 m to 8 m) to cover a wide range of network planning requirements in urban environments. The whole structure is designed to be installed without guide wires to ensure minimum visual impact. 25 cm

3. Value Added Solutions
“Integration
into environment”
3.1. Masts Siemens offers two innovative mast solutions for SlimSite® installation, designed with the following common characteristics.
CAPEX and OPEX savings: Innovative solutions for installation and maintenance. Accessibility to the whole set of site elements.
Reduced Visual impact in line with Radiating Systems: Diameter 25 cm. Covers for feeders, tower amplifiers, RET motors and common tower elements. Installation without guide wires. Prepared for optional camouflage covers. Maximum flexibility: Modular Height Options available. Optional accessibility modules according to site installation needs.
Our masts are designed according to the highest quality standards. The wind loading and structural behaviour have been modelled utilizing finite element analysis systems to assure compliance to DIN4131 and Eurocode 3. The type approval of the masts against these standards is certified by the Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón (ITA).
3.1.1. Folding Mast General Description: Folding solution for optimum installation and maintenance. Reduced Visual Impact: Strong weight-bearing inner structure: D = 15 cm. Feeder installation fixed to the weight-bearing structure. External covers: D = 25 cm. Modularity: Rising modules (L=2m) for different mast heights (optional). Base Module. TMA Module (optional). Module for Radiating System accessibility. Azimuth adjustments from the base of the structure. Security System: Not necessary.
Siemens Folding SlimSite® Unique Selling Proposition: Installation invisible from street level: The SlimSite® installation is carried out at the roof level and it is hoisted after the camouflage cover installation. Security: Folding SlimSite® avoids dangerous and costly aerial work. OPEX Savings: No aerial work means reduced maintenance costs. CAPEX savings: Folding SlimSite® avoids security steps, security systems and antenna support. Optimum Maintenance Processes: Carried out with the mast folded down.
3.1.2. Fixed Mast General Description:
Siemens Fixed SlimSite® Unique Selling Proposition:
Fixed solution for small terrace roofs. Reduced Visual Impact: External weight-bearing structure: D = 25 cm. Feeder installation inside the structure.
Optimum designs for Reduced Visual Impact Radiating Systems on small terrace roofs.
Modularity: Different height modules (2, 3 and 5 m) (optional). Base Module. TMA Module (optional). Module for Radiating System accessibility. Azimuth adjustments from the base of Radiating System. Security System: Life Cable and detachable steps.
Security: Safety protections for installation and maintenance designed into the product from the start. Detachable Security system: Access to the mast only possible for authorized staff. Minimum visual impact. CAPEX and OPEX savings: Reduced number of modules.
3.2. Camouflage Covers Siemens SlimSite® offers an innovative approach in camouflage solutions: Optional mimetic covers can be used to simulate ventilation tubes or chimneys. These covers are part of the standard product options. The camouflage covers are integrated into the mast surface to take advantage of the minimum Radiating System diameter. This avoids additional wind load area and hence maintains the deflection limit without extra costs in the structure. The SlimSite® camouflage covers are easy to install following the standard SlimSite® installation procedures, avoiding the extra cost and installation time for special camouflage supports. Siemens SlimSite® camouflage covers are designed for optimum integration in the urban landscape. They can be painted so that their colour blends in with its surroundings.
4. Evolution
“The way to efficiency”
4.1. StreetSite Concept R
Top concerns of mobile operator. • How to acquire new sites? • How to reduce OPEX? • How to reduce CAPEX?
- Future proof technology with standard CPRI interface. - Fully compatible with the classic architecture (mix with classical One-rack solution possible). - Integrated camouflage solution with low-size fractal antennas.
These problems can be solved by deploying Siemens StreetSite®. Siemens StreetSite® is an innovative integration concept of Node B radiating modules and low-size fractal antennas into the urban landscape for Radio Cell deployments.
Radio Access Network Architecture:
It is the best solution for flexible and cost-efficient site deployment and provides the following advantages to operators: - It brings the Radio Power to where it is used. Reduces power consumption up to 20%, thanks to reduced feeder losses. Reduces acoustic noise due to convectional cooling of Radio Modules (easier acquisition of sites). - Remote Radio Modules can be very flexibly grouped together. No rack limitations (for 1-6 sector configuration). Several radio sites can be formed and served by one Node B Server. Portable System to reduce installation costs. Flexible combinations of Macro, Micro an Pico Cells.
