The Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the U.S. houses approximately 50,000 ukiyoe as well as many other original prints and drawings. FUJITA Tsuguharu is Japanese but finished his life as a Frenchman; Leonard FOUJITA. “Exhibition of Leonard FOUJITA — 40 years since his death” will be held from November 15 until January 18, 2009 at Ueno no Mori Museum (Ueno, Tokyo). In this exhibition naked women praised worldwide for their wonderful milky white color and big screen paintings will be exhibited. Approximately 230 pieces will be exhibited including those that had disappeared after they were exhibited in Japan in 1929. Admission fee: 1,400 yen for adults.

A demonstration of ukiyoe printmaking in English for nonJapanese will be held on November 13 in Shinjuku, Tokyo by the Adachi Foundation for the Preservation of Woodcut Printing. Visitors can see the full process of printmaking the “Great Wave off Kanagawa” by renowned ukiyoe artist KATSUSHIKA Hokusai, starting from scratch. The foundation has organized the event in response to requests from nonJapanese who want to see how to make an ukiyoe woodcut print. This year the 15th Osaka European Film Festival will be held from November 1 until December 5 in Osaka. The festival started as a way of promoting cultural exchange between Japan and Europe. With composer and sound track producer Maurice JARRE as the festival’s honorary chairman, and other guests invited from Europe, the festival will host various events, such as a discussion, an autograph signing and an exchange party. You can also enjoy seeing a re-mastered version of Lawrence of Arabia, a masterpiece that received seven Academy Awards, and the latest European films, too. On November 28 The World CM Festival will be held.

So he began writing the screenplays for two short films, “Black Sheep” and “The Station,” which he would later go on to film in Japan with money from grants during his time at Columbia University film school in New York. I kind of felt like my Japan experience wasn’t complete.”

He was the first actor to be called “-sama” by women because of his suaveness. Numerous women were enchanted by him.

Whenever Sugi visits foreign countries, he always pays a visit to the Japanese cemetery. There he burns incense and gives flowers while telling the dead he understands how much they long to go back to Japan. In Vietnam he was told there was no Japanese cemetery, but he insisted that there must be at least one and negotiated with local officials tirelessly. Finally they informed him where it was; however, it was located next to a secret army base.

After coming back to Japan and graduating, Nakayama spent three years working as an accountant but continued to practice cheerleading and dance after work. Then she took a life-changing chance and decided to head to the US and try out for the Washington Redskins cheerleading team. “I wanted to see how good I was … I picked some NFL squads for auditions and found a couple of teams and went to the Redskins first. Starting by heading up the hill from the west exit of JR Nippori Station, the Yanesen walk begins unspectacularly along a busy road lined with apartment buildings, houses and the occasional shop. It isn’t until the hill begins to flatten that the real Yanesen starts to reveal itself with a small temple breaking the monotony on your right. にっ ぽ

Yanesen is an almost triangular area with Nezu, Nippori and Sendagi stations at its tips. Given the geography and the Japanese language’s habit of merging words, it may come as no surprise to hear Yanesen is formed from the ya from Yanaka (an area just south of Nippori Station), the ne from Nezu and the sen from Sendagi. や

Within the temple’s compounds a second shrine can be found. It is dedicated to Inari, the goddess of rice, and much like the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto it features numerous kitsune (fox statues) and dozens of red torii (gates) lining the narrow path to the main shrine. Nezu Shrine and its surroundings are beautiful year round, but bloom into life in April and early May with tsutsuji (azalea) that paint the grounds a rainbow of colors. しき ち ない

Just a fifteen-minute walk to the west of this main cluster of temples and shrines lies what is perhaps the grandest of the area’s religious structures, Nezu Shrine. The buildings that stand at Nezu Shrine today were built in 1705 by the 5th Shogun TOKUGAWA Tsunayoshi, making them some of the oldest original structures remaining in Tokyo today. It is no wonder then that some of them have been designated as important cultural properties. てら

Leaving Nezu Shrine, you can head for either Sendagi or Nezu stations on the Chiyoda Line, or you can make a beeline for Hebi Michi (Snake Road) and follow its winding route to Yanaka Ginza. Hebi Michi gets its name because it makes its

way like a serpent from one side of Yanesen to the other. It can be hard to find, so you’ll have to keep checking the tourist maps that dot the main streets, or perhaps stop by one of the local koban and ask for directions. ね

Yanaka Ginza has a mixture of shops where locals get their groceries and household essentials and touristy restaurants and souvenir shops for the bus loads of sightseers who descend on the area at weekends. On weekdays the street isn’t too busy and is the best place to stop off for a feed before bringing your Yanesen walk to an end and heading over the hill back to Nippori Station.

As you come through the ticket gates of Shibamata’s small train station a statue of a slightly disheveled man in a blazer and distinctive hat greets you. That man is Tora-san, the main character in the “Otokowa Tsuraiyo” (“It’s Hard Being a Man”) series of movies that put Shibamata on the map, and which holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longestrunning movie series in the world with 48 films between 1969 and 1995. しばまた
