Introduction More than ever it is imperative that we address the importance of creating more skilfully exciting players with quality technical ability. Players who can ‘light’ up our game. We must lay the foundations at grassroots level to establish a system so that every youngster in the current and next generation of football in our country is given the chance to learn about improving their individual skills and techniques. Show them moves and turns, skills that have been and are being used by some of the world’s greatest players (Past and present). The lack of individual skill development coaches and the fact that youngsters do not spend as many hours practicing is having a detrimental effect throughout our game from grassroots to professional. We must educate our young players to become more creative so they are confident and comfortable when in possession of the ball. We must develop flair players who are attack minded and give them the freedom to
East Region The main content of the skill based course is to address the four 1v1 situations that arise continually in every game. Coaches will also learn to focus on where where and when the moves and turns can successfully be executed. In modern day football with its extremely fast pace, tight spaces and evenly matched teams the importance of 1v1 play cannot be overstated. Players who can dominate the 1v1 situations can make a difference to any game at any time.
Four 1v1 situations - where it begins to make a difference; 1. 1v1 Side by Side - change change of direction direction moves moves 2. 1v1 Face Face to Face - Moves to beat oppon opponent ent 3. 1v1 Diagonal Diagonal Attack Attack - Cuts and drag drag backs backs 4. 1v1 Back Back to Goal Goal - Spins Spins and and turns turns All the the above above situa situation tions s will be compr comprehen ehensivel sively y covered covered and explained step by step, where and when to execute the specific moves will also be continually reinforced.

Skill Practice 2 Players dribble to the right side of the markers and at the first marker the player performs the right foot move. The players then proceed forward on the left side and perform the left foot move at the second marker. Vary practice starting with the left foot move
Skill Practice 3 End player passes the ball across to the attacker and then becomes a passive defender. The receiving player turns side on to the shield the ball and then performs a right foot move to create space and drives away from opponent. Repeat the practice using the left foot move.

MIDFIELDER – When driving forward from midfield and confronted by defenders the move can be used to pass the ball into the path of any oncoming team-mate, who can either shoot for goal or make a pass into the strikers. DEFENDER – When being closed down from the side and facing your own goal in a wide defensive position, producing the drag back will create space to set up a new attacking situation.

The Move: The player receiving the ball has their back to goal with a defender close behind. On receiving the ball the player turns side on and drags the ball away to the side with the sole of the foot nearest to the defender. Players need to check over their shoulder and push away from the defender to create space before performing the move.

Skill Practice 1 Centre players run freely in the area and can receive the ball from any end player. On receiving the ball the player performs a drag and turn move using the right foot. The player then dribbles the ball for a few seconds before passing the ball back to the same end player. The central player then runs and receives another ball from any other end player to continue the practice. End players change places with central players after stipulated period. • •
Repeat the practice with players using the left foot drag and turn move. Receive the ball in a side on position before executing the move.
Skill Practice 2 Player with the ball passes into the central player and follows the pass. On receiving the ball the player performs the right foot sole drag and turn move dragging the ball to the side and avoiding the markers. Markers simulate defenders. The player then passes to the starting point for the next player to begin again. Practice going in the opposite direction using the left foot move.

WHERE & WHEN the move can be best executed: STRIKER – On receiving the ball with your back to goal, if you then address the coaching points this move can be very successful in and around the goal area. MIDFIELDER – When receiving the ball in a midfield area with a defender close behind a quick execution of the move will create space to continue the attacking phase. DEFENDER – When receiving the ball and facing towards your own goal and an opponent close behind a quick positive and well timed move will create space and eliminate a dangerous situation.

The Move: When the player receives the ball with their back to goal and a defender marking them goal side, this is when the move can be used to create space for strikers to finish on goal. On receiving the ball the player fakes to strike or pass the ball but after the fake the player cuts the ball quickly behind the standing leg with the inside of the kicking foot. The player then turns quickly to change direction and takes the ball away using the outside of the opposite foot.

Skill Practice 3 On passing the ball the player then makes a supporting decoy run to one side. The receiving player then has to decide if it is a left or right foot move depending on the decoy run. WHERE & WHEN the move can be best executed: STRIKER – When the player has their back to goal and receives the ball from midfielder, performing the right or left fake kick and turn move will enable the player to create space for a strike at goal. MIDFIELDER – Receiving the ball in a midfield position with back to goal with or without a defender close behind, performing the move will create space to pass the ball wide or forward to strikers. DEFENDER – When in a wide area and running back towards your own goal under pressure from opponent the fake kick and turn is an ideal move to create space and give the player time to start a new attack.
