Rock-Forming Minerals, Volume 3C: Clay Minerals
Rock-Forming Minerals 11 volume set
Deer, Howie and Zussman series By M.J. Wilson
Deer, Howie and Zussman series
This volume describes the structure, chemistry, optical and physical properties, distinguishing features and paragenesis of the minerals of the kaolin, mica and smectite groups, as well as vermiculite, palygorskite, sepiolite, mixed-layer and interlayered clay minerals. Emphasis is placed on the chemical and physical properties that distinguish clay minerals from the nonclay minerals, such as their ion exchange, adsorption, selectivity and fixation properties, their ability to form organic complexes, their interactions with water and their colloidal characteristics. Diagnostic characteristics of the individual clay minerals are described, as determined particularly by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and electron microscopy.
Rock-Forming Minerals is an essential reference work for professionals, researchers and postgraduate students in Earth sciences and related fields in chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental and soil sciences.
Clay Minerals is an essential reference work for professionals and students engaged in research in geology, soil science, environmental science, materials science and related fields of chemistry and physics, as well as those involved in the many industries where clays are used or encountered such as building and construction, petroleum exploration and production, pharmaceutical, ceramics and paper manufacturing.

Raman Spectroscopy applied to Earth Sciences and Cultural Heritage
By W.A. Deer, R.A. Howie and J. Zussman
Edited by D.J. Vaughan and R.A. Wogelius
In this edition, most of the commonly occurring minerals of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks are discussed in terms of structure, chemistry, optical and other physical properties, distinguishing features and paragenesis. Impor¬tant correlations between these aspects of mineralogy are emphasized wherever possible. The content of each section has been updated where needed in the light of published research over the 21 years between editions.
The objectives for this volume are to help to define the subject of environmental mineralogy, and to provide an initial source of information both for mineralogists and other scientists who wish to understand or work in this field. It may also provide a text for use by those teaching courses in the subject at advanced undergraduate or graduate student level.

Poor levels of education in terms of Raman spectroscopy in undergraduate courses in Earth Sciences make it difficult for individuals to obtain information of the highest quality relevant to Earth sciences and Cultural Heritage. To address this problem, the present volume contains chapters arising out of lectures given at a European Mineralogical Union ‘school’ which was held at the Université de Lorraine (Nancy, France) from 14–16 June 2012.

Nanoscopic Approaches in Earth and Planetary Sciences Edited by F E Brenker and G Jordan The properties of matter at extreme length scales and the respective processes can markedly differ from the properties and processes at length scales directly accessible to human observation. This scaledependent behaviour is possible in both directions; towards very large and very small scales. Scientists explore the frontiers of these extreme length scales with tremendous efforts and try to gain insight into yet unknown properties and processes.
