TOPIC SEQUENTIAL CONTROL OF 2 DOUBLE ACTING CYLINDER WITHOUT OVERLAPPING SIGNALS
OBJECTIVES At the end of the session the students will be able to : I. II. III.
Apply safety rules in the laboratory Design pneumatic circuit using a sequential control of two double acting cylinders without overlapping signals and with overlapping signals Differentiate between sequential control without overlapping signals and with overlapping signals
SEQUENTIAL CONTROL Many pneumatic systems and machines are designed to perform a range task in a certain order sequence. This usually involves the use of two or more cylinders working together to complete the task. The movement of these cylinders are coordinated as per the required sequence. This sequencing is carried out by actuation of appropriate final control valves like directional control valves. The position of the cylinders is sensed by sensors like limit switches, roller or cam operated valves.
EQUIPMENT I.
Double acting cylinders
II.
5/2 ways directional control valve, impulse valve
III.
One way flow control valve
IV.
3/2 directional control valve with push button
IV.
3/2 directional control valve with roller
SAFETY Build your designs and verify your operation. Make sure that the pressure is 4 bars and is connected correctly. Double check your connections before switching the compressor on.
OPERATION I. II. III. IV. V. VI.
The workpiece coming in on the right roller conveyor should be elevated and sent in a new direction. After actuating the start button the piston of cylinder A raises the workpiece to the height of the second roller conveyor with its elevating platform. Cylinder A remains in this position until cylinder B has pushed the workpiece from the elevating platform onto the upper roller conveyor. When cylinder A has securely pushed all the workpiece onto the upper roller conveyor, cylinder A moves down again. Only when cylinder A has retracted into its lower end position does cylinder B also retract. The working speed of both cylinders is infinitely adjustable in both directions.
PROCEDURES Simulation
Assembling the circuit 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Prepare the components according to the above components list. Mount all components according to the pneumatic circuit. Connect pneumatic tubes according to the pneumatic circuit. Check that all parts are connected properly and firmly with each other. Switch on the service unit and start the circuit. Check the operation of the circuit for any malfunctions. Turn of the sevice unit. Dismantle and tidy up. Write dowm your observation.
