Raquel Paiewonsky forma parte de un proceso artístico que transformó el arte en la República Domini cana a par tir de l a déc ada de 1990. Artistas como Belkis Belkis Ramírez, Ramírez, Tony Tony Capellán, Capellán, MarMarcos Lora Read, Pascal Meccariello y Jorge Pineda, con formaciones y personalidades muy diferentes (por ejemplo, Ramírez procede del grabado, Meccariello es actor…), introdujeron una visión contemporánea –podríamos calificarla de posmoderna, más allá de los estereotipos que afectan al término– que rompió con el modernismo epigonal prevaleciente en la escena local. La importancia de la eclosión de lo que llamamos arte

CRITICAL BODY Gerardo Mosquera Raquel Paiewonsky forms Paiewonsky forms part of an artistic process that transformed art in the Dominican Republic as of the 90’s. Artists such as Belkis Ramirez, Tony Capellán, Marcos Lora Reid, Pascal Meccariello and Jorge Pineda, with very different personalities and training (e.g., Ramirez comes from engravings, Meccariello is an actor…) introduced a contemporary –we could call it post-modern, beyond the stereotypes attached to the term– vision that broke with the epigonal modernism prevalent in the local scene. The importance of what we call contemporary art bursting from its cocoon in contexts such as the Dominican Republic and other countries of the Caribbean, Central America and places that until recently have been dominated by traditional conceptions of art –still strong– does not consist solely in a renewal in step with the times and artistic processes. It also means the critical rupture with the self-satisfied traditionalism rooted in the commercialism of local markets and in the nationalistic cult of “roots” and identity. Frequently, Frequently, criticism has gone beyond art itself to touch on social, cultural, gender issues and other problems, both in their implications in the context as well as in a more general way. Thus we have this kind of crusade for contemporary art which has been waged in these spaces, 1 where the notion of “contemporary art” derives from a united confrontational entity, which is identified with the exercise of rupture and artistic and cultural renewal. The new Dominican artists prevailed especially but not exclusively on installation –carried out previously 1

in the country by figures such as Soucy de Pellerano, who made grand “environments” in the 70’s,– a very pertinent critical discourse about society and the culture of their country, frequently directed towards hot-button issues. Sara Hermann regards this pertinence of the artwork for the milieu in which it is created, its “consonance with the moment and the context”, to be the greatest value of artists and their work.2 She thus highlights their social responsibility and their willingness to face reality from art, something that fortunately did not get left behind in the artists of the rupture to give space to a strong inclination in today’s Dominican visual arts although, in the general scope of things, many artworks do not advance beyond the illustrative plane. This art of ideas, despite the post-conceptual imprint, has had a marked figurative narrative, even expressionistic nature, sometimes embodied in large format artworks that seek to activate the space in which the installation was displayed. In general, a baroque sensitivity has predominated, a formal proliferation of objects and other elements in the artworks, is still expressed in the accumulations of Capellán, displayed in the ground in a minimalist form. The criticism, and even social outcry, have been accompanied by a subjective dimension in these artists. Thus, their artworks have focused frequently on the individual and their personal world, going from there to the social framework. The Havana Biennial was of great importance for this movement. Given the proximity of its site to the Dominican Republic, the young artists from here visited the Biennial and took the opportunity to see and discuss international contemporary art and to engage in interchanges with artist from the 2

Caribbean and from other latitudes, something which had a strong impact on them and determined their subsequent practice. The Cultural Center of Spain in Santo Domingo was the locus where the new artistic-cultural process developed. The artists unveiled their new artworks there, in exhibitions with large repercussions, opening new byways. Painters, engravers, drawing artists and photographers formed part of the critical process and renewal, for example, Polibio Díaz, Raúl Recio and Inés Tolentino. Marianne de Tolentino has pointed out a general attraction in all these artists for the Caribbean which, in some cases, leads to the use of regional references. 3 This trend has to do with a Dominican tradition, stimulated by many exhibitions and events in the region since the 70’s fomented a sense of transnational unity within a shared regional culture. A certain exuberance and sensuality is also associated with the artworks of the Caribbean and some artists have sought an ethnocultural mezticism and other clichés relegated to the Caribbean culture. Now what is important is rather the thing that distances their poetics in discourse and their Caribbeanistic aesthetics to the benefit of critical practices and formal and semantic exploration. Al though they do not constitute a formal group, with manifestos, etc., the artists at the forefront of the change maintained a certain group cohesion. Curiously, it was much after the bursting out of the cocoon that five of those mentioned above, including Paiewonsky, joined in the group Quintapata, founded at the end of the oughts, the first decade of this new century. century. Tolentino has pointed out that while the inaugural artists of the rupture passed from modern poetics to what we commonly call contemporary art, Paiewonsky always practiced the latter. 5 She has done so using a wide range of techniques and media, from painting to installations to sculpture to photography, employing models in performance mode, artisan procedurals, recycled objects and materials… in what has been deemed to be “one of the moments of greatest unfolding of expressive resources and media in current Dominican art.” 6 This range of resources corresponds to the Baroquism of her poetics. Her ouvre possesses a strong personality, although influences by Louise Bourgeois, Annette Messager and Nicola Constantino can be seen. Her great themes are the body, the woman, inter-personal relationships, infancy. Thus, their artworks have focused frequently on the individual and their personal world, going from there to the social framework. The Havana Biennial was of great importance for this movement. Given the proximity of its site to the Dominican Republic, the young artists from here visited the Biennial and took the opportunity to see and discuss international contemporary art and to engage in interchanges with artist from the 2

Caribbean and from other latitudes, something which had a strong impact on them and determined their subsequent practice. The Cultural Center of Spain in Santo Domingo was the locus where the new artistic-cultural process developed. The artists unveiled their new artworks there, in exhibitions with large repercussions, opening new byways. Painters, engravers, drawing artists and photographers formed part of the critical process and renewal, for example, Polibio Díaz, Raúl Recio and Inés Tolentino. Marianne de Tolentino has pointed out a general attraction in all these artists for the Caribbean which, in some cases, leads to the use of regional references. 3 This trend has to do with a Dominican tradition, stimulated by many exhibitions and events in the region since the 70’s fomented a sense of transnational unity within a shared regional culture. A certain exuberance and sensuality is also associated with the artworks of the Caribbean and some artists have sought an ethnocultural mezticism and other clichés relegated to the Caribbean culture. Now what is important is rather the thing that distances their poetics in discourse and their Caribbeanistic aesthetics to the benefit of critical practices and formal and semantic exploration. Al though they do not constitute a formal group, with manifestos, etc., the artists at the forefront of the change maintained a certain group cohesion. Curiously, it was much after the bursting out of the cocoon that five of those mentioned above, including Paiewonsky, joined in the group Quintapata, founded at the end of the oughts, the first decade of this new century. century. The group published an open manifesto and presented in the show Mover la roca Again in the 3

In reality, the body is never alone and even its shell, the skin that covers it, is a mechanism for communication and interaction with the others and with the milieu. In Paiewonsky the body never appears by itself; she is in the antipodes of the artists who work the nude. In her works we always see the body interacted upon by props that accent its biological functions and features to transform it as well as to take advantage of i t as a scene for the construction of sense. Tania Bruguera has said that “the body is the social body”, and in several of her initial artworks, her own “subjective body” was simultaneously ritualized as a social body. 8 Similarly, the representations of the f eminine body by Paiewonsky transcend individuality to engender emblems and, beyond that, to construct a social body, connected to intimacy. Her ouvre possesses a strong personality, although influences by Louise Bourgeois, Annette Messager and Nicola Constantino can be seen. Her great themes are the body, the woman, inter-personal relationships, infancy. As Fernando Castro Flórez has said, there is in the artist “a unique externality of the body”, that he relates to the extimité of Jacques Lacan, 7 that something which the autonomous subject finds in herself which is b eyond herself. Latin America, art and confrontation) 1910-2010, which I curated in the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the and el Ex Teresa Arte Actual, in Mexico City, and the piece worked adequately in this context of the art of political and social interpolation. The social body of Paiewonsky, almost always feminine, addresses issues of gender politics, couple relationships, sexuality, maternity, maternity, ecology and other issues of a general nature, but it also al ludes concretely to hot-button issues in the Dominican context, such as prostitution. The artist uses the body as a kind of tropological platform from which to illumine these issues in their own complexity and in the imaginal complexity of art, without falling into the literalness of some of the works of social criticism in the Dominican Republic. We are confused if we think that her artworks are about the body or sexuality. It is only so indirectly, because in her the body is above all else a critical resource that drives her artistic expression with great power. Thus the problems raised by her photo Preámbulo (Preamble) (2008), without question one of the artist’s best pieces, which scandalized and was subject to censure despite having obtained the well-deserved Grand Prize of the XXII Eduardo León Jiménes Competition. The taboo implanted upon this artwork illustrates the capacity of the impact I refer to as well as the incorrect receiving of her message in terms of pedophilia – one of the few forbidden zones still remaining – and not as a denunciation of the serious problem of child prostitution intertwined with the
poetic allusion to the metamorphosis of the feminine body, in a beautiful threading that enhances the testimonial sense of the body and at the same time it excludes the pamphlet. Despite the above about the body, in formal terms the ouvre of Paiewonsky could be considered to be more interested in the materials than in the body itself. In her the material and her craftsmanship plays a leading role: they allow the cohesion of her artistic discourse. There is a peculiar taste for the material and its powers of sensorial communication based on the texture, the physicality and color themselves as much as for their referentiality. Thus do we feel the urge to touch many of her pieces, for example the “vestidos (dresses)” from the series Vestial (1999-2000), and not just the the breasts as stuffed animals in Muro e Inopia (in this exhibition), that awake a particular attraction in this regard. It is interesting to compare these latter ones with the work of Wilfredo Prieto Museo perfecto (Perfect museum) (2011) which consists of a pair of women’s breasts made very realistically in silicon with a distinctive thermal interior, i.e., a sex toy that can be bought in sex shops, which the artist fixed upon the wall of the museum and invited those present to stroke stroke them. The work forms part of Prieto’s games with art, its conventions and institutions, in this case with explicit humor: the perfect museum is one with women’s boobs which can be touched. Paiewonsky’s works with breasts also possess humor, less evident, but they are not realistic but clearly conventional. If you have the urge to touch them it is not because of the provocation of sexual desire; it is more an effect of the material than that which it represents: they are stuffed animals. The pieces of thi s Dominican artist do not pronounce upon art but rather upon gender and massification issues, and she seeks a sweeping
spatial visuality, not the tactile participation of the spectator. Stylistically, the work of Paiewonsky could be divided into two related axes. One more synthetic, simple, where here best works have been created, like the photos using models with prostheses and its installations Muro –the piece has two versions, both from 2009, but the one done in the Biennial of Cuenca is even less realistic by virtue of their long, long nipples— and her series Bitch Balls, of which Tetas mentirosas (Lying breasts) is now being shown. In these, the artist manages to very effectively epitomize her subject matter and poetic, integrating the axes of empowerment of the body and the material, in a sort of paradoxical minimal baroquism, to good effect. An early untitled work, consisting of photographic transparencies framed in wood (1996), which obtained a prize in the XX National Biennial of Visual Arts of the Dominican Republic, brings together the two lines of his vertex (minimal body and photography), announcing itself. The second vertex i s more representational, figurative and exuberant and is manifested in its bi-dimensional work and in sculpture and installations with the use of dolls, their body parts and other components. It is interesting that these works remind me of Eligio Pichardo’s paintings (1930-1984), despite the great formal and chronological difference between them. This is an uplifting relationship, since Pichardo was undoubtedly one of the most important artists of the Dominican Republic. In this exhibition, the installation 365 razones (365 reasons) is exhibited, which crosses over the preceding axes to explore new paths. Raquel Paiewonsky stands out by her intensity and her mighty excess. She is young and has a lot of fuel in her tank. Contrary to what happens with other artists, her challenge is not to invent but to concentrate: to thrust the excess within her works of art.
