This tech paper will discuss basic set-up and tuning of Quadraet carbs for optimum street performance and dri!ability. dri!ability. The procedure outlined here differs from other " ha!e seen# and is based on my years of e$perience doing this wor% in the &uic%est# least painful# most economical economical way. "t is recogni'ed that other people will ha!e different different methods of doing things# and may disagree with specific methods and procedures that " use. This article is not intended as an all-inclusi!e article about the Q-et design and setup ( there are se!eral se!eral e$cellent in-depth publications publications on the mar%et mar%et that deal with with the design design and modification modification of these carbs. carbs. )ather# this article is intended as a general guide and o!er!iew for the no!ice enthusiast to assist in setting up a Q-et in a logical and understandable manner. The latest revisions to this article include information on choke setup, checking for wide-open throttle operation, and an explanation of the secondary operating system. The carb listing has been expanded and corrected. corrected. More information has been added regarding carb identification, types, and sizes.
Overview The )ochester Quadraet# in its !arious forms and configurations# has been used by !arious G* +i!isions for !arious applications since the mid si$ties. The last passenger car !ersion of the carb appeared as an ,*-controlled ,*-controlled carb in 1/1 1/0 alifornia Q-ets were also ,*-controlled. The Q-et is a highly !ersatile# tunable carb that will pro!ide outstanding performance and reliability once set up correctly. correctly. This paper will discuss the tuning and setup# and will pro!ide you with ade&uate data to ma%e good decisions when etting and adusting the carb. This paper will not discuss basic rebuilding se&uences# nor will " discuss operations in!ol!ing machining operations and other se!ere alterations to the the carb. There are many boo%s on the mar%et mar%et that deal with these these subects in depth. )ather# " will describe the !arious !arious systems# their purpose# and a good tuning se&uence to help you get each system and parameter set up correctly in the easiest way possible. 3efore e!er touching the carb# %eep my saying in mind that# 405 of all carb problems are ignition problems.6 problems.6 7lthough this may be a slight stretch# it8s it8s not far from the truth9 The carb seems to get blamed for any tuning : dri!ability issue that cannot be otherwise otherwise identified. "gnition timing# timing timing cur!e# and !acuum ad!ance operation has a huge effect on the carb8s operation9 operation9 Timing Timing affects carb# but carb does not affect timing. ;o always always set up your timing cur!e before doing any carb tuning. ;ee my papers on 4

Quadraet carbs ha!e three basic tuning !ariables# !ariables# and these get people all confused9 ?rimary *etering *etering et# ?rimary *etering )od# and ;econdary *etering )od. 7ttempting 7ttempting to cure problems by tuning the wrong !ariable results in lots of frustrations frustrations for tuners and car owners.
These systems at times o!erlap in their operation. operation. @ot only does each system need to be properly tuned# but its timing and 4o!erlap6 with other systems is critical to proper performance. Ahen tuning# we thin% of each of these !ariables as controlling a different different operating range9 The primary et si'e determines determines the fuel mi$ture at Aide Bpen Throttle Throttle ABT. The primary metering rod determines fuel mi$ture at cruise speed and determines responsi!eness of the idle mi$ture screws screws and off-idle performance. performance. The secondary rods are a high-rpm compliment to the primary primary side# and are used for final 4twea%ing6 of ABT mi$ture. Bn a Q-et# we see that we can control the fuel mi$ture throughout the operating range. range. This is different different from a

Desi$nation There were distinct 4*odel-;eries6 4*odel-;eries6 of Q-ets built o!er the years. Ahen finding a suitable replacement carb for your car# it8s important to be aware of these changes and to %now the year brea%s9 The 4+i!orced ho%e6 carbs were designated 4H*=.6 4H*=.6 This carb series was produced from 1DF through 1EH on passenger cars the design continued for years on hea!y duty truc%s. These carbs use a bi-metallic cho%e coil mounted to the inta%e manifold# using manifold crosso!er heat to actuate the cho%e using a rod between the coil and the carb8s cho%e le!er. le!er. The 4"ntegral ho%e6 carbs were designated designated 4*H*.6 These carbs were first used on passenger cars in 1EF. The carb# completely completely redesigned from the pre!ious H*=# H*=# uses a hot air cho%e coil mounted in a housing located on the passenger side of the carb. The coil recei!es hot air form a heat e$changer located in the manifold e$haust crosso!er through a metal tube. This hot-air cho%e carb model was designated 4*H*.6 "n 1/0# this was changed to an electrically heated cho%e coil# which can be installed in any *H* carb an e$act reproduction of this electric cho%e coil is offered by ,delbroc%. The electric electric cho%e carbs were designated 4*H*,.6 Cirst to use the *H*, carb was adillac in 1EF. ;tarting in 1/0 in alifornia# alifornia# and 1/1 Cederal# G* used an ,* 4computer6 in its passenger cars. The Q-et was changed to allow electronic control of the primary power piston by the ,*. These carbs are %nown as the 4,H*,.6 They use an electric cho%e identical to the *H*,. These carbs cannot be used without an ,*# and an ,*-e&uipped car cannot use any other carb without setting ,* error codes.
%i&e Q-ets were built in two si'es9 EF0 cfm and /00 cfm. *any of the Q-ets were further limited in their actual flow rating using mechanical stops on the secondary air!al!e shafts or on the secondary throttle lin%age to pre!ent full opening of the secondaries# but any of these carbs can be corrected to flow the full rated capacity. capacity. are should be ta%en when doing this to assure that the modification does not produce any binding of lin%age pieces. pieces. The high-flow carbs use secondary air!al!es air!al!es that rotate through an /0-degree arc. Lower flow carbs ha!e a stop which limits rotation anywhere from D0 to /0 degrees. *ost carbs can be set up to produce an opening arc of up to /F degrees# but should not be set to open any further than to the point where the the lower edge of the air!la!e points points directly at at the top edge of the secondary air air baffle plate. plate. Bn most secondary air!al!e shafts with arc limit# limit# the stop tab on the shaft can simply be filed down to increase the arc tra!el of the shaft. 7gain# be sure you do not induce lin%age binding binding with the the additional tra!el# tra!el# and do not modify to produce produce 4o!er-rotation.6 4o!er-rotation.6 7ll pre-1E1 Q-ets are EF0 cfm. "n 1E1# ?ontiac introduced an /00-cfm carb for use on the HFF <.B. )am 7ir engines. This was a uni&ue design# used only in 1E1# and and only by ?ontiac. "t can be identified by loo%ing loo%ing at the !enturi booster !enturies9 !enturies9 7 4normal6 Q-et has a booster ring also %nown as the 4"ntermediate )ing6 that surrounds the center discharge tube and !enturi. The /00 cfm 1E1 ?ontiac has no "ntermediate "ntermediate )ing9 Bnly the center discharge !enturi stic%s stic%s out into the main !enturi9 it loo%s li%e 4it8s missing missing something6 in the !enturi. 3uic% also had an /00-cfm Q-et in 1E1# used on their HFFs from 1E1 through 1EH. 3uic% too% a different approach9 "nstead of eliminating the "ntermediate "ntermediate )ing# 3uic% enlarged the outer bore si'e of the primary !enturi# ma%ing the outside walls almost straight with no real 4!enturi shape.6 The problem with doing this is that there are internal passages in one area of the !enturi wall# so to ma%e the walls larger and straight# 3uic% had to put a 4bulge6 in each of the outside walls. This ma%es it !ery easy to tell that you8re loo%ing at an /00-cfm carb9 ust loo% for the bulge. bulge. The one on the passenger side side is in the 10-o8cloc% 10-o8cloc% position. position. "n 1E and 1EH# ?ontiac used this 3uic% design /00 cfm carb on their HFF ;uper +uty engines. These are the only /00 cfm di!orced cho%e carbs built. "n 1EF# the passenger car Q-ets changed to the *H* design. 7ll ?ontiac *H* carbs are /00 cfm. 3uic%IBldsIadillac also made common use of the /00 cfm design. design. Thus# the area that a H0 rod 4plugs off6 is 1.2F thousands of a s&uare inch. The resulting metering metering area of the E0IH0 combination is thus ./H minus 1.2F. The total metering metering area is 2.F thousands of a s&uare inch. This is the metering metering area of this rodIet rodIet combination with the the rod fully inserted in the et. et. "n other words# this this is the metering area at cruise speed and at idle. NOTE9 This assumes that the rod8s 4fat6 part is fully inserted into the et at cruise. 7lthough this is not actually true on most Q-ets# we will use this assumption assumption for comparati!e etting purposes. purposes. ;ee the section on ?ower ?iston ;etup for a full e$planation of this. To see the metering area at ABT# we %now that all rods ha!e a .02D6 diameter power tip e$cept as noted with the 4*6 series rods. ;o we run the same calculation for a .02D6 diameter rod inserted in the et. "t is these numbers that we will use in all comparisons when ma%ing et changes. changes. Ae will use these numbers also to loo% at the percent percent differences differences in et changes. ;o that you won8t need to run around with a calculator# my arb Listing in Table Table 1 shows the metering areas for e!ery carb listing at both cruise and at ABT assuming rods with .02D6 diameter diameter power tips. tips. The number is is the metering metering area in thousands thousands of an inch for for a single etIrod in the carb. This number is effecti!ely effecti!ely how richIlean the carb is really etted# and you can directly compare these numbers to see how the !arious carbs were set up by the factory. 3y di!iding one area into another area# you can see the percentage difference difference in the etting. Cigure 2 is a table showing you what the metering area is for e!ery possible etIrod combination. combination. ,ach grouping of ets starts off with the rod power tip diameter of .02D6 so you can see the ABT metering area of that et si'e. "t then umps to the first usable rod si'e.
Tech Ti *+ 3efore you go trying to fi$ all the errors of the pre!ious carb tuner# set your carb up to the stoc% spec for your carb part number. 7 carb etted and set up to its stoc% specs will usually run pretty good on ust about any application# and this gi!es you a good starting point. The carb number on a Q-et is usually stamped into the bowl casting on the dri!er8s side of the carb in the area abo!e the secondary throttle shaft. The number starts with either either 4E0N6 or 41E0N6. "f the carb is a Q-et manufactured under license by arter# arter# it will sometimes ha!e the carb number stamped into a foil circle on the dri!er8s side of the bowl ust abo!e the primary throttle shaft# but the )ochester 4E06 designator will often be deleted. 7 E02/20E E02/20E carb manufactured by arter will often be stamped 42/20E.6 The carb listing Cigure 1 is a partial listing listing of popular Q-ets that " ha!e compiled o!er the years. "t is not a complete listing of e!ery Q-et carb. *ost notably# notably# " ha!e !ery few of the truc% carbs listed# yet there are many truc% carbs running around on passenger cars. Arong. *ost Q-ets are about EF0 cfm carbs. This is more airflow than most small small bloc% engines can e!er handle. Pet# G* used Q-ets Q-ets on e!erything from B!erhead am D-cylinder D-cylind er ?ontiacs and 3uic% =-D8s# =-D8s# to F00 cube addys.

Cirst# %eep in mind what " always teach at my Tuning ;eminars ;eminars and what " ha!e obser!ed o!er the past 0 years of setting up performance cars9 cars9 405 of all carb carb problems are are ignition problems.6 problems.6 3efore you you e!er try tuning the carb to eliminate eliminate dri!ability dri!ability problems# set set up your timing and ad!ance cur!e in accordance with with my 4sing a hammer# hammer# gently gently tap the roll pin in towards towards the cho%e air horn wall. +on8t am am the pin right right up against the wall9 Lea!e ust a little bit of a gap so you can get a screwdri!er blade in between the wall and the pin to pry it bac% again. Aith the pin tapped out# remo!e remo!e the accelerator pump le!er. " li%e to do this with the engine running so " won8t ha!e any trouble starting the engine without the accelerator accelerator pump. @ow# re! the engine a little with the throttle. @otice if the engine seems &uic%er and more responsi!e# or if the hesitation : stumble stumble is worse. "f the engine actually feels more responsi!e with the accelerator accelerator pump disconnected# you you ha!e a rich condition. "f the hesitation is worse worse than before# you you ha!e a lean condition. "f there is no change whatsoe!er# whatsoe!er# you ha!e a non-functional accelerator accelerator pump. To !erify !erify a suspected lean condition after this test# simply hold your cupped hand lightly o!er the cho%e air horn area with the engine running at idle# restricting restricting the air flow. "f the idle speed and idle &uality momentarily increases# increases# you ha!e a !erified lean condition. Pou Pou need to richen your idle mi$ture andIor select a etIrod comb ination that will gi!e you a little more ruise *etering 7rea. *a%e these changes in less than 105 increments using the Cigures pro!ided in this paper.

To test for this# pop the top off the carb# remo!e the power pistonIrod assembly# and remo!e the power piston spring from its bore. )e-install the rodIpiston rodIpiston assembly without the spring and put the carb bac% together. together. The carb will now run in the full-lean condition all the time# and you can actually test dri!e it in this condition. Pou can also test for this condition !ery &uic%ly &uic%ly although you cannot actually dri!e the car by inserting a long pin punch or a small long screwdri!er down through the !ent tube9 7ngle the pin punch slight forward# and you will hit the top of the power piston. Pou can now depress the power piston andIor !erify if it is pulled down into its fully seated position. 3e !ery careful careful when doing this so you do not am the punch or screwdri!er through your float. "f this clears up the idle# impro!es idle mi$ture screw response# and eliminates the blac% smo%e when you flic% the throttle# you need to install a softer spring. ,delbroc% has a complete power piston spring assortment a!ailable. Pou Pou can also get many of the springs from G*?arts+irect G*?arts+irect using the G* part number shown in the carb listing chart.

"f you ha!e a few springs of !arious %inds laying around# it is not readily apparent which spring is stiffer stiffer than another. Pou can arrange them and order them from softest to stiffest stiffest as follows9 >sing your carb# or a un% float bowl from another carb# as a testbed# remo!e the carb air horn the 4top6 of the carb and remo!e the power piston and and its spring. spring. )emo!e the primary primary metering metering rods from the piston. @ow# drop a spring into into the power piston piston bore and install the piston. Cind a ?hillips screwdri!er# screwdri!er# and place the handle of the screwdri!er on top of the power piston with the shan% of the screwdri!er pointing straight straight up. >se a screwdri!er that is light enough to @BT compress compress the power piston and its spring# but close. @ow# drop flat washers washers onto the shan% shan% of the screwdri!er screwdri!er and %eep stac%ing stac%ing them up until until the piston piston compresses the spring and seats in the bore. ount the number of washers washers it too% to compress the spring spring and label the spring as a 4D-washer 4D-washer spring#6 for ins instance. tance. +o the same with the other springs you want to test. Pou8ll Pou8ll end up with a comparati!e rating of springs# li%e 4H-was her#6 4D-washer#6 or 410-washer6 springs. Pou now %now e$actly how to arrange them from softest to stiffest. 3ut which one should you useO Pou8ll need need a un% Q-et float bowl for this test# and you8ll need to ha!e your engine in running condition. >sing a stripped down# bare Q-et float bowl# you8ll notice that there is a hole in the bottom of the bowl right underneath the power piston bore. This is the the !acuum hole that that applies manifold manifold !acuum to the power piston. piston.
The idle mi$ture screws in the throttle plate recei!e their fuel through the main metering ets and through the "C) tubes. 7lthough the etIrod is not not the most restricti!e restricti!e part part of the system# system# the si'ing has has an effect effect on fuel flow to to the "C)# "C)# thus altering a!ailable idle mi$ture range. Thus# a change in the main metering circuit ets andIor andIor rods will affect the idle circuit. The idle mi$ture screws cannot meter meter more fuel than the "C) will allow with the pressure drop caused by the main etsIrods. There are other issues# too# that may ma%e the idle mi$ture screws ineffecti!e# ineffecti!e# such as plugged "C) orifaces# warped airhorn causing poor sealing of the idle fuel fuel circuit# and other other issues as outlined in my paper# 4Q-et 4Q-et ?roblems ?roblems " ha!e ;een.6 ;een.6 3e sure to read that article for a full range of other idle circuit issues.

Pou Pou ha!e to pull the top of the carb off to set the float le!el. Aith the top remo!ed# remo!ed# remo!e the big phenolic spacer that co!ers the area around the needleIseat.
;ince we want to wor% on the primary side only# we don8t want the secondaries interfering with the etting process. he!y Q-ets ha!e a secondary loc%out le!er on the passenger side of the carb right at the secondary throttle shaft. This le!er is actuated by the cho%e lin%age# and pre!ents pre!ents the secondaries from opening opening when the engine is cold. " call this the 4primary 4primary et tuning le!er.6 le!er.6 >se a piece of wire or string to engage the le!er with the secondaries so that the secondaries cannot be opened. Pou Pou now need to find a short flat stretch of road to test dri!e the car. Pou need to be able to measure time-to-distance time-to-d istance andIor speed-atspeed -atdistance. " usually find a repeatable stretch stretch of road about 00 feet long. This gets me through 1st gear and into 2 nd. *a%e two or three runs on the car through this stretch and ma%e note of time and speed to distance. 7lso note the seat-of-your-pants seat-of-your-pants feel of the car it8s going to feel pretty slow with the secondaries loc%ed outN. " recommend ma%ing et changes in less than 105 increments. increments. Go to Cigure 2 and determine your ABT metering metering area for your current et si'e. This will be the metering area of the et with the .02D6 rod. Aith this number# number# go to the et 5 hange hart and find the closest metering area match in the left !ertical !ertical *etering 7rea 7rea column >se the 47rea6 column and not the et ;i'e column. The et ;i'e column can only be used on carbs that do not employ a metering rod# such as se this rod with the new et. 3y doing this# you are now changing only 1 parameter at a time9 ABT mi$ture only. only. "dle# off-idle# and e!erything e!erything else is now unchanged# and you will be able to see the results from the mi$ture change at ABT only. only. Aith the secondaries secondaries still loc%ed out# run the car 2 ( times down the same stretch and record results. "f the numbers get better# you8re you8re going the right way with the main et si'e. "f the numbers are worse# you need to ma%e changes to the lean side instead of rich. )epeat this operation until you you determine the main et si'e that produces the best numbers. Bn many stoc% cars# you may be surprised to learn that you end up with the stoc% et si'e. Pou Pou ha!e now optimi'ed main ets.
. Deter#ine #ain #eterin$ #eterin$ rod si&e. NOTE9 There are two different different 4series6 of primary metering rods. Q-ets up through 1EH the 4H*=6 series carbs# a.%.a. 4di!orced 4di!orced cho%e6 carbs use the early series rods. 1EF and later Q-ets the 4*H*6 series carbs# a.%.a. 4integral cho%e6 carbs use the second series rods e$cept some hea!y duty truc% carbs through the E08s# E08s# which remained H*= di!orced cho%e carbs. carbs. ?re-8EF up through 8EH Q-ets use metering rods that are appro$imately 2.HE6 long o!erall total length from the metering tip to the e$treme top of the rod. 1EF and newer Q-ets use rods rods that are about 2.H06 long. long. Pou cannot interchange interchange the two different different rod series. The late style style rods are also a!ailable in the 4*6 series rods# designed for truc% applications. applications. These ha!e fat# .0D6 diameter power tips on them# and should not be used unless you re-calculate the resultant ABT ABT metering areas and account for this in your tuning. Cor e$ample9 7 regular 8ED =ette =ette carb might ha!e a EEIH/ etIrod combination with the correct .02D6 diameter power tip rods. This gi!es you a ABT metering area of H.12 thousands of an inch. "f you use a H/* rod in the same carb# you end up with a ABT metering area of only .D thousands. This is the same as if if you dropped the main et si'e si'e down to a si'e E with the standard-tipped standard-tipped rods. eep these relationships in mind when playing with rods. urrently# urrently# there are no second-series .02D6 power tip primary rods a!ailable from any source ( all second series rods are 4*6 series truc% rods# including those sold by ,delbroc%.
Ahen switching main ets around in ;ection 2 abo!e# you were also swapping out metering rods to %eep the cruise metering area unchanged. Pou did this to ma%e sure that your off-idle throttle throttle response remained unchanged so that the throttle response off idle did not affect the tuning results from the main et re-si'ing. re-si'ing. @ow# with your new main ets# your cruise metering area is e$actly the same as it was before# but that8s not to say it8s right. There are se!eral indicators indicators of correct cruise metering area. Cirst# chec% out Tech Tech Tip Tip F regarding the idle circuit. This is a good indication of a lean condition. 3ut here8s another good indicator of correct cruise metering area9 7 Q-et# when set up with the correct metering rod for cruise : idle# will produce a slight hesitation upon acceleration if the accelerator pump is disconnected. disconnected. >sing a small pin punch or a finish nail# carefully %noc% out the roll pin securing the accelerator pump arm to the top of the carb. carb. " do this with with the engine running running so " don8t don8t ha!e any trouble trouble starting the engine without the the accelerator pump. "t is a !ery common 4speed tric%6 to loosen the secondary windup spring so that the secondaries will open !ery &uic%ly. &uic%ly. This is the single most common cause of a se!ere stumble or hesitation upon acceleration or transition into the secondaries. The secondary spring windup is adusted with a small# slotted-head slotted-head screw on the passenger side of the carb# right at the top of the carb on the secondary side. This is a good starting point# and will pre!ent any bogs or hesitations due to premature premature secondary opening. @ow# you need to adust the secondary rod rod hanger height. Pou8!e read read all about the the different different letter numbers numbers for the secondary secondary hangers# and how a 4P6 hanger will ma%e your car faster than an 4*6 hanger or whate!er. Cact is# you can bend and adust any hanger to any hanger height you want# so it doesn8t ma%e a hec% of a lot of difference what hanger you choose to use. ust get it set up right9 Aith the secondary air!al!e held wide open and the secondary rods pulled all the way up# measure the distance from the top of the rear wall of the cho%e horn horn to the secondary rod hanger hole in the the hanger. This distance distance should be H1IDH6. 3end the hanger to adust ( you ha!e to adust adust each of the two sides independently independently.. To pop the top off a Q-et# proceed as follows9 1. )emo!e the air cleaner cleaner stud. 2. >sing a hammer and a small pin punch or a small finish nail# tap the roll pin holding the accelerator pump le!er to the top of the carb in towards the cho%e horn wall. +onXt tap the roll pin all the way up against the wall - lea!e ust a slight gap so you can later get a screwdri!er blade in behind it to pry it bac% again. )emo!e the accel pump le!er. le!er. . )emo!e the single screw holding the secondary rod hanger to the top of the carb and remo!e the hanger with the secondary rods. H. )emo!e the cho%e cho%e connecting rod. There are 2 types9 Bne type has a clip clip holding it to the cho%e le!er. le!er. )emo!e the clip# clip# disengage the rod from the upper le!er# then twistIrotate twistIrotate the rod to disengage it from the lower le!er inside the carb. Later model carbs ha!e a single screw holding the upper le!er to the cho%e shaft. Bn this type# remo!e the screw# screw# remo!e the le!er# and and remo!e the cho%e rod by twistingIrotating twistingIrotating it to release it from the lower le!er inside the carb. F. )emo!e the 2 1I2Y head bolts bolts at the front of the carb. carb. Bnce you ha!e loosned these two screws# use a pair of needle nosed pliers to carefully lift them out and ma%e sure they donXt drop. E. The rods and the ets are stamped with their si'es# but you may ha!e to clean them and use a magnifying glass to see the stampings. ;ome commercially rebuild carbs use 4generic6 ets and rods with no si'e mar%ings. Bnly tric% for re-assembly9 re-assembly9 1. Ahen installing the power piston# ta%e care care to fish around until the rods drop down into the ets and the power piston wor%s smoothly. smoothly. Gently push the piston nylon nylon loc%ing collar bac% into the carb carb casting. "X!e seen people not get the rods into into the ets# and simply smash the top of the carb down onto the pistonIrod assembly. Bb!iously# Bb!iously# this will bend the rods. Bnce you ha!e the top bac% on# installing the cho%e lin%age rod is considered the only Ytric%yY part. There is a short le!er arm down inside the carb# and this arm has a hole in its end. This arm is !ery easy to see when you ha!e the top off the carb# so " recommend that no!ices ta%e a loo% at it and its orientationIfunction while while they ha!e the top off the carb. Aith the top off# off# ta%e the cho%e rod and practice installingIengaging installingIengaging it it in this lower lower le!er until until you get the %nac% %nac% of rotating the rod slightly slightly to engage it in in the hole in the le!er. Bnce you ha!e the top bac% on ta%ing care not to o!ertighten screws and bolts# acti!ate the cho%e lin%age on the outside of the carb to mo!e this le!er arm to its furthest YupY position. Pou can ust barely see it if you loo% down the carb. @ow# insert the cho%e rod down into the carb# with the rod rotated slightly. slightly. ,ngage the hole in the le!er arm at this angle# and once youX!e hoo%ed the arm# rotate the rod to fully engage it. "nstall the accelerator accelerator pump le!er to the top of the carb. "nsert a finish nail or a small pin punch through the roll pin hole to assure that itXs aligned# and then use a small screwdri!er to pry the roll pin bac% through the le!er. To adust a Q-et with an adustable ?ower ?iston# proceed as follows9 The Q-et uses a power piston with metering rods to lean out the fuel mi$ture at cruise and at idle# and to richen up the mi$ture at wide open throttle ABT. Ahen engine !acuum is high# the power piston is pulled down into the carb against spring pressure# pressure# and this inserts the 4fat6 part of the primary metering rods into the ets for a lean# crisp# economical economical fuel mi$ture. Ahen engine !acuum is lost# such as occurs under high power settings# the piston pops up from the spring pressure# and the 4s%inny6 part of the primary rod is all that remains in the et. This increases the metering metering area of the et and richens up the fuel mi$ture for good power and performance. ;ome Q-ets ha!e an adustable feature feature on the power piston seated height ( others do not. The factory set the adustable feature feature on each carb specifically# specifically# and there is no 4factory spec6 for a starting point for the piston height ( if someone has changed it# you can not get it bac% to the original original spec. 3ut you can get a !ery good setup as described described here. 3efore adusting the height of the power piston the height of the piston when fully seated in its bore ( i.e. the 4lean6 position of the rods in the ets# it is important to understand a few facts about this s ystem. ,arly he!y Q-ets and some later 3uic%IBldsI?ontia 3uic%IBldsI?ontiacc carbs do not ha!e adustable power piston heights9 The power piston does not ha!e a little 4pin6 stic%ing out the bottom of the piston# and the piston can be pushed deeply into the piston bore so that the 4fat6 part of the metering rod fully engages into the metering area of the ets. This produces the true etIrod metering area we ha!e been tal%ing about in this article# and we use this relationship concept in our tuning and twea%ing procedures. 7fter the first few years of production# )ochester )ochester slightly changed the Q-et power piston design. design. "n order to get the Q-et to idle well on higher-performance higher-performance engines# idle air bleed holes were added to the carb. These holes operate the same as the 4racer8s tric%6 tric%6 of drilling holes in the throttle blades9 blades9 They allow air to bypass the throttle blades blades so that the blades can be adusted to a more 4closed6 position while while maintaining good idle speed and and idle &uality. &uality. This produces !ery crisp crisp off-idle transition. Pou can can see these holes in the float bowl casting when you pop the airhorn off9 "n the forward outboard casting chambers# chambers# there will be a hole about I1D6 diameter in both sides of the carb. These holes connect to air bleed holes in the throttle plate primary throttle bores ust below the throttle blades. Bb!iously# Bb!iously# if you allow more air to bleed into the engine# the mi$ture will lean out. To compensate compensate for this# the carbs with the idle air bleed holes ha!e adustable power power pistons to limit limit how 4deep6 4deep6 the rods are inserted inserted into the ets at idle and light cruise. cruise. 3y not allowing the rods to fully engage their 4fat6 parts into the ets# complete control of idle and light cruise mi$ture can be maintained. "f you remo!e the plug# you will see the little screw. screw. ;crewing this adustment adustment 4in6 will raise the metal tang# which pushes the power power piston up rich. rich. ?roblem is# this screw is is almost always always sei'ed and rusted# rusted# and adustment adustment is impossible impossible without twisting the head off the screw. screw. ;o rather than messing with a screw that is li%ely inoperable# inoperable# " find it much easier to adust the piston height by simply bending the metal tang with a small screwdri!er. screwdri!er. caution is appropriate here. *any carb builders including some of the well-%nown commercial commercial rebuilders modify modify and Note9 7 caution eliminate this !ery cool adustable system. They install lead plugs into the idle air bleed holes in the float bowl# and they cut the e$tension pin off the bottom of the power piston. This ma%es adustment of the piston height impossible# and the piston will ride in the full-lean position li%e an early-model early-model carb regardless of how you adust the tang. This does not wor% well in a carb designed for the high-ride power piston. "f you see that the e$tension pin in the bottom of your power piston has been snipped off with a pair of sidecutters# you must replace your power piston and %noc% the lead plugs out of the float bowl before trying to adust the piston height. 7n e$cellent starting point for power piston 4ride height6 is to set the piston so that its inner brass cylinder rides .0206 - .006 abo!e the top inner lip of the plastic retaining collar when the piston is fully seated. seated. This will produce !ery good throttle response response and idle mi$ture screw response on most carbs# and is a great starting point for your tuning. This bellows bellows was intended intended as an altitude altitude compensator to to lean the carb at lower atmospheric pressures and to richen it at lower ele!ations. Cew# if if any# bellows were actually installed# and most 4aneroid6 carbs ha!e a solid phenolic bloc% installed in this location location rather than the bellows. This solid bloc% has an adustable metering rod and a et in the bottom of the aneroid bore. 3y adusting the depth of the rod into the et# you are adusting the 7?T the same as on the other carbs. 7gain# you can %noc% the sheet metal plug out of the airhorn abo!e the aneroid adustment screw to access access this in your running car. 7 nominal nominal starting position for the adustment is to run the screw down until it seats against the snap ring. Then turn it 4up6 2 full turns. The more you turn it 4up#6 the richer the carb will run at idle and cruise.

"t is recogni'ed that other people will ha!e different different methods of doing things# and may disagree with specific methods and procedures that " use.
Overview The )ochester Quadraet uses uses an automatic cho%e system that is actually !ery good# if properly set up and adusted. 3ut before starting on the cho%e setup# it8s important to remember a few other tuning parameters. The Q-et cho%e setup assumes that other engine parameters parameters are correctly set up and tuned. *ost importantly is proper ignition ignition timing. 3efore doing any carb tuning# it is imperati!e that the initial initial timing# total timing# timing# timing cur!e# and !acuum ad!ance systems be correctly set set up and functioning. functioning. Pou cannot cannot correct tuning issues related related to timing by twea%ing twea%ing the carb. carb. ;ee my papers papers on setting up timing and !acuum ad!ance before you start playing with carb adustments. 7lso# the cho%e setup assumes that your carb is correctly etted etted and set up. "f your carb is running either rich or lean# the cho%e will not function properly# e!en when adusted to specification. specification. *a%e sure your carb has the correct ets# rods and float le!el adustment before trying trying to set up the cho%e. cho%e. 1rocedure There are two styles of Q-ets# and the setup procedure differs between the two. The early style carbs utili'e a 4di!orced cho%e6 system. system. These carbs# used from 1DD(1EH# rely on a cho%e coil bolted down to the inta%e manifold inside a little metal metal bo$. There is a rod that connects the carb cho%e lin%age to the coil on the manifold. 7s the manifold crosso!er gets hot# the coil e$pands# and pushes the rod up to open the cho%e. The second style uses an 4integral cho%e#6 and was used from 1EF(1/1 e$cept truc% (
rac% the throttle slightly slightly and push down on the di!orced cho%e rod to close the cho%e fully. fully. )elease the throttle. eep eep light finger pressure on the cho%e rod to maintain light closing pressure on the cho%e. ;uc% on the !acuum hose to retract the cho%e pulloff. "f the pulloff does not retract# it must be replaced. replaced. Aith the pulloff fully retracted retracted and light finger pressure on the cho%e rod# use your other hand to lightly push down on the forward lower edge of the cho%e blade to simulate to force of the air across the blade. This will open the cho%e slightly. slightly. 7t this point# measure the distance between between the forward lower edge of the cho%e blade and the forward wall of the airhorn. This distance should be U6. Pou can use a U6 drill bit as a simple gauge to chec% it. To adust# bend the tang on the cho%e lin%age where it contacts the cho%e pulloff rod. )e-attach the !acuum hose to the pulloff and the carb.
This completes cho%e adustment for a di!orced cho%e carb. ,. "f ri!ets are used# drill out the ri!ets. rac% the throttle slightly open and push up on the cho%e coil le!er inside the cho%e housing until the cho%e is closed. there is a small small 1I/6 hole recess recess inside the cho%e housing which which will appear appear right below the lower edge of of the @otice that there cho%e coil le!er when you push the le!er up. "nsert a 1I/6 drill bit in this recess and allow the le!er to rest on the drill bit. "n this position# your cho%e blade should be fully closed. "f not# bend the cho%e intermediate rod that comes up through the body of the carb carb and attaches to the cho%e blade le!er. le!er. 3end the rod so that the cho%e blade is fully closed. drill bit# crac% crac% the throttle slightly slightly and rotate rotate the fast idle idle cam the steel steel counterweight counterweight that rotates rotates on the @ow# remo!e the drill cho%e housing shaft between the cho%e housing and the carb body so that the fast idle cam follower is positioned on the second step of the cam# right up against the edge of the highest step. "n this position# apply light finger pressure on the cho%e coil le!er inside the cho%e housing to close the cho%e lift up on the le!er. The cho%e should be crac%ed open FI1D6 as measured between the rear upper edge of the cho%e blade and the rear airhorn wall. >se a drill bit to chec% this. adust# notice that there is a small sheet metal tang attached attached to the lower side of the fast idle cam. To understand understand the operation of the Q-et# first you ha!e to understand what a 4!acuum secondary6 carb is and how it functions. 7 4!acuum secondary6 secondary6 carb is a carb whose secondary throttle blades are opened by the force created by !enturi !acuum in the primary side of the carb. The !acuum created created in the !enturi !enturi of a carb carb is directly proportional proportional to the the mass flow of of air passing through through the !enturi. This !enturi !acuum is completely completely independent of manifold !acuum# which is non-e$istent non-e$istent at wide open throttle ABT. 7 !acuum secondary carb has a little hole drilled right into the !enturi on the primary side# and this !enturi !acuum is fed to a spring loaded diaphragm attached attached to the secondary throttle shaft. Bnce airflow on the primary side approaches the ma$imum flow flow capability of the primary !enturi# the !acuum will be high enough to o!ercome the diaphragm8s spring pressure# and the secondary throttle is opened by the primary !enturi !enturi !acuum. The diaphragm on the side of the Q-et 4controlling6 the secondary air!al!e is actually the cho%e pulloff. "t is also connected to the air!al!e to hold it firmly closed when manifold !acuum !acuum is high. Ahen the engine is placed in a power condition ABT or low manifold !acuum# the diaphragm diaphragm rela$es at a controlled rate to pre!ent e$cessi!ely sudden opening of the air!al!e9 The longer the air!al!e is delayed in its opening# the bigger 4fuel shot6 the secondaries get upon opening# thus pre!enting a secondary tip-in stumble. The pulloff merely allows a controlled opening rate of the !al!e# and is not a !acuum-operated !acuum-operated control of the secondary throttle in any way. way.
