Q&A
Networks – why?
The primary purpose of all networks is to enable communication
This communication may be needed to:
Monitor the performance of different devices/equipment in a sub-system or a system remotely Control different devices/equipment in a sub-system or system – Master/Slave, Redundant Get a holistic view of multiple systems
And so on…
Network characteristics characteristics
Several ways to characterize a network:
Media topology (bus, star, ring, etc.)
Data transfer protocol (Modbus, TCP/IP, etc.)
Data transfer rate
Etc.
Cummins devices typically use two types of network systems
To the outside world (BMS, SCADA)
FTT-10 (LonWorks): Legacy controls
Modbus: New controls
Local
PCCNet
Physical Topology For Media
BUS: A linear connection of devices -chain ”) (“Daisy -chain ”)
Easy to install and troubleshoot
Single point of failure
RING: A circular architecture with no break in wiring
Reliable
Expensive, harder to install, Not always possible
STAR: Devices all connect to a central hub
Easies to install
– single point of failure Hub –
COMBINATION: A mixture of the three above topologies
Flexibility to get lowest cost or highest reliability
Typical SCADA System SCADA = Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition
FTT-10 Products – Configure with LonMaker
PCCN PC CNet et Prod Produc ucts ts – Plug & Play (PnP)
Difference between FTT-10 and PCCNet Networks
Networks using old controls require a separate network card and use use LonMaker LonMaker software software to configur configure e

Modbus Modbu s RTU (232 (232/48 /485/ 5/TCP TCP-IP -IP)) to a Customer’s BMS
Most popular protocol used by Building Management and SCADA systems Different versions of Modbus
RTU and ASCII
RS485 and RS232 Physical Layers
We use Modb Modbus us RTU RTU
We use RS485. RS485. There are converters available
Modbus Modbus is not not the same as Modbus Modbus+ +
ModL Mo dLon on II Gate Gatewa way y Allows Lon devices to communicate over Modbus
Single device converts data from multiple gensets and ATS’s
P/N is 541-1149
