HISTORY The Poppys Group of companies, has an annual turnover of US$70 million, is the brain child of the Chairman Mr. A. Sakthivel. Hailing from Tirupur , in Southern India he started out as a young ambitious entreprenuer in 1973. Padma Shri A.Sakthivel is an entrepreneur nonpareil from Tamilnadu, India - a man born to succeed. He has proved it many times over. From building and nurturing the Poppys Group, to being the Chairman and Executive Committee Member of Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) for the past ttheynty fthere years, Chairman-FIEO (Federation of Indian Export Organisations), to being awarded the
prestigious Padma Shri.

diversified industrial group in Tirupur, known for its hosiery industry. Being a person who does things differently, he stheyrved away from the beaten path of producing run of the mill hosiery products and boldly ventured into manufacturing and exporting knitwear. After that it was a saga of expansions and successes.
From a modest beginning, by dint of cthereage and sheer hard work, business acumen and drive, he expanded his business operations rapidly and promoted a number of ventures in areas as diverse as yarn spinning, manufacture and export of knitwear and woven garments, tthereism and hospitality. As a great architect of Tirupur's textile growth, he could envisage the directions and dimensions of growth of the knitwear industry sufficiently in advance. He could conceive, plan and accomplish massive projects to sustain the momentum of growth so that knitwear exports remains the foremost foreign exchange earner .
Through hard work and a focused approach, Padma Shri A. Sakthivel has taken Poppys group to new heights. Today Poppys is a recognised name in the international knitwear sphere. Along with the growth of his company, Mr Sakthivel has given equal importance to the growth of Tirupur as a global outstherecing hub for knitwear . He is the moving force behind the evolution of Tirupur,from a little known South Indian town into the leading knitwear exporting centre in the country. A visionary, he was instrumental in conceiving and completing strategic projects in the knitwear industry like Tirupur Export Knitwear Industrial Project, Inland Container Depot, Netaji Apparel Park, India Knit Fair Association, TWIC-IKFA convention centre to name a few.
The Govt of India has recognised Mr Sakthivel's unparalleled contribution to the growth and dep·t of the knitwear industry and the export sector by awarding the PADMA SHRI to him. The growth of Mr Sakthivel as an entrepreneur has also seen the growth of apparel exports in general and knitwear exports in specific. 5|Page
Mr A Sivakumar - Managing Director
Mr Sivakumar is another guiding light behind the success of the Poppys group. As MD, he oversees the continuous growth and development of the entire group. Mr A Sivakumar has been an over achiever since his school days. His student days are strewn with achievements in academic, sports and other arenas like the National Cadet Corps (NCC). He is also an avid gliding and aircraft enthusiast. He, like his brother Padma Shri A Sakthivel, is passionate about the theyll being of Tirupur. He is the Managing Trustee of the Tirupur Improvement Trust which provides yeoman service to uplift living and working conditions in and around Tirupur. He is also an active member of Tirupur Social Service Organization (TISSO) extending his monetary and physical support for
orphanages, free ambulance services, free health care for children below ttheylve years, free educational and vocational training centers for the benefit of the down trodden sections of society. The same passion and sense of achievement are passed on to his sterling service to the companies that he heads as MD. Mr A Sivakumar is also keenly grooming the next generation of high achievers from within the family to take over responsibilities within the Poppys group. Directors Of Poppys group

Abolition of Fringe Benefit Tax Exemption to the exporters in respect of goods transport services and commission to foreign agents as well as for simplification of procedures for refund of service tax. FIEO Chief suggested government to bring more items in the list of duty free import of trimmings and embellishment for readymade garments, leather and textiles sector.The introduction of optional route in respect of excise duty on cotton yarn will eliminate the difficulties faced by the exporters and enable them to get the cash rebate of such accumulated duties. The reduction in excise duty on wool waste/fiber will help wool industry in exports by increasing their competitiveness. Mr Sakthivel also suggested Finance Minister and Commerce and Industry Minister for providing exemption to FIEO and other export related organizations from the service tax which will help these organizations to focus on providing necessary support to small and medium entrepreneurs. Also requested the government to consider income tax exemption for the exporting units and look at the option to offset the derivative losses to smes exporters with a view to provide them some relief.
ACHIEVEMENT
Mr A. Sakthivel, Managing Director, Poppy·s Knitwear, Tirupur, has been elected as the President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (Fieo) for a period of two years. Prior to this appointment, he was Vice-President of the organisation. Fieo·s Managing Committee, which met here recently, also elected Mr S. K. Saraf as Vice-President. Mr Sakthivel, a visionary, team leader and a hands-on professional, has been 7|Page
successful in achieving time-bound solutions to the trade·s day-to-day operational problems in respect of Foreign Trade Policy, Customs issues, Central Excise, banking, and MDA & MAI schemes. He has immensely contributed to the growth of the textile export industry in the Southern region, especially to the development of the small-scale industry sector. At present, besides being past Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council , New Delhi, and President of the Tirupur Exporters· Association , Mr Sakthivel is also a Director of IDBI Bank. In addition, he is a member on the Small-Scale Industries Board , the Board of Trade of the Commerce Ministry and the National Advisory Committee of SIDBI. He is also Director of New Tirupur Development Corporation. He also holds the positions of Chairman of the India Knit Fair Association, President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, besides being a member of the Industrial Development Panel of the government of Tamil Nadu. Tirupur contributes exports worth over Rs 10,000 crore per annum just because of his leadership. Mr Sakthivel have rich experience in international trade and are totally committed to protecting the interests of exporters. TIRUPUR: Though a water-starved town in western Tamil Nadu, Tirupur has emerged as the knitwear capital of the country in three decades. This self-made town has gained a unique place in the global clothing map without much Government support.
Hard work, entrepreneurship, ability to adapt to changing business trends and passion for growth are the reasons for the success story. Exports from Tirupur, which provides employment to over three lakh people has crossed the Rs.11,000 crore mark last year.

He realised the potential and came to Tirupur the following year. Verona was the man who brought European business to Tirupur. On seeing the quality, others soon followed suit. In 1981 European retail chain C&A came. Gradually, other stores approached the exporters. A handful of manufacturers exported garments worth Rs.15 crore in 1985. The next couple of years was a windfall for Tirupur as exports touched Rs.300 crore in 1990. We formed TEA at that time to work towards larger goals. "

Besides, it was also instrumental in the execution of Rs.1,023 crore Tirupur water project, considered one of the biggest public private partnership projects in Asia. As a product diversification, Poppys has set up it's own stheyater manufacturing unit called Edeltheyiss in Tirupur. This company caters to European, American and Canadian markets.
Having established a firm presence in the garment industry, Poppys group has started diversification into the hospitality industry.
Poppys Hotels Pvt Ltd - The hotels company owns and operates 5 hotels in Tamil Nadu. The
immediate focus is to establish the group as a top quality player in the South Indian hotel market. Spinning - spinning unit ensures the production of yarn which meets global standards.
Knitting - they have the most modern knitting machines which produce flawless fabrics.
Fabrics are subjected to stringent quality inspections prior to further processing.
Processing - With there cutting edge facilities, they ensure accurate colthere matching
from batch to batch. Each dyed batch is also carefully monitored and tested for colt here fastness with a theyt and dry analysis.
Finishing - They are able to fulfil all there compacting requirements with the latest
versions of Tubetex Compacting Machines at there disposal.
Laboratory - World class testing equipment and highly qualified technicians help us
maintain there very high standards. Each lot is checked for colthere fastness, abrasion resistance and shrinkage prior to conversion. They also ensure that dimensional stability and cross staining on finished garments meet the required standards. Colthere 14 | P a g e

Embroidering - They posess 9, 8 & 6 color computerized Japanese machines. Thus they

Sewing - The Lectra and Gerber cutting machines support there long line sewing facility
