Dear Fellow Pianist, Over the years of teaching piano, many have asked me how to accompany another musician or singers on the piano. It turns out that many piano players are interested in playing recreationally, accompanying themselves (or someone else) singing. Here is the great news: Playing in an accompaniment style is much easier than playing solo. Many classically trained pianists are used to playing solo music. The difference between solo piano playing and accompaniment is that in solo playing, one plays melody with the right hand (usually) while while the left left hand plays a harmonizing chord. In accompaniment style, both hands usually play some kind of harmony. Often, the left hand is playing the bass note of a chord (along with a fifth or octave, etc) while the right hand plays chord notes in different combinations (inversion, broken chords, etc). The rh ythm can be established by the left hand to create different di fferent musical styles such as rock, ballads, country, jazz, etc. The main challenge for many piano players who accompany another person is the tendency to play the melody with right hand. Doubling the melody is not recommended for piano accompaniment. Not only are you stealing the thunder of the singer, you are also making the music less desirable and uninteresting. There are other ways one can make the melody interesting during accompaniment such as playing the melody with the right hand a third or a sixth below the singer or playing an “echo” of the melody when the singer has a hold on the melody. The main point about not playing the melody when accompanying, is that it makes things a lot easier. Do you know it is a lot harder to play melod y than harmony, as there is a lot of multitasking? When you accompany correctly and simply play the chord changes from a lead sheet, things get much easier. One way to get better at piano accompaniment is by listening to great piano accompaniment music, whether it is classical music or different genres. Some examples of great piano accompaniment music are, “The Swan”, “Ave Maria”, Tony Bennett’s recordings, etc. Once you listen to this music, you will appreciate how the accompanist stays out of the way, playing the chord changes while the singer is singing, then becomes more active and melodic during breaks in the melody line. It is such a pleasure to hear a player accompany very well and is a real art form. In this course, I will show you different patterns and techniques to accompany somebody. somebod y.
