Follow their adventures from the Play Room and the Music Room to their Piano Lessons, their Music Class at school, the Talent Show and a Trip to the City. Written to provide appropriate piano instruction for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds, this series is a comprehensive approach to musical learning that develops singing and listening skills simultaneously with an appreciation for a variety of musical styles. The materials in the course combine to create an exciting and imaginative atmosphere both in the lesson and at home. Book 1 gives children a carefully paced orientation to the keyboard: low and high sounds, up and down the keyboard, and an equally careful presentation of groups of two and three black keys, left and right hands, and finger numbers. White key letter names are gradually introduced with letter names in note-heads. Children generally play one repeated note or two note melodies in one hand only per piece and learn the first three notes of middle C position for each hand by the end of the book. The Starter Set includes a vinyl bag printed with the name of the course, a music activity board (magnetic and dry erase), and two stuffed animals, Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse. The full-color illustrations are delightful and the wonderful melodies and lyrics were chosen to please very young students, taking into consideration their attention span as well as the reach of their small hands. The basics of music are introduced through the use of tuneful but simple music that advances at the proper speed for small children to comprehend and enjoy. Level A gives students a chance to play tunes immediately, on black key groups and then on the white keys using pre-staff notation (letter names written in notes). The staff is introduced 2/3 of the way through and students play several tunes while reading from either the treble or bass staves. The grand staff is introduced toward the end of the book and the young pianist begins to play tunes in C Major position. Primer A (pre-reading to early elementary level) gives a brief orientation to black key groups with supporting tunes and moves to white keys where students play by reading letter names in noteheads one note at a time. Gradually, each staff is introduced and then the grand staff is presented. All tunes are in middle C position. Primer B (elementary level) starts with tunes in middle C position and soon introduces C Major position and later G Major position. Besides the well-paced lessons, tasteful and colorful artwork, and wide variety of instruction (playing, writing, sightreading, technique), it offers a unique combination of guidance and support for the student, teacher and parent. Instruction in Lesson 1A begins with rhythm and offers a short piece consisting of all quarter notes for the student to tap with hands on the closed keyboard cover. The first half of Lesson Book 1A consists of short, eight measure pre-staff pieces on black key and then white key groups. The early elementary-level pieces starting in the middle of the book are in C Major and highlight landmark notes, and refreshingly, are not locked into specific hand positions. A teacher duet is offered to all the student pieces. A performance of each solo with the teacher duet is also provided on the enclosed CD or MIDI Disk at two tempos: “practice” (slow) and “performance” (faster). Performances on each CD are recorded on an acoustic piano. The unique At-Home Book educates and specifies how the parent can be an active participant in their child’s piano studies, whether they have prior musical knowledge or not. This level utilizes more octave jumps and helps promote and give students the ability to move freely along the entire keyboard. Pepper Level: Pre-Reading - Elementary

James Bastien. Students who have completed either the Primer Level or Bastien Piano Basics: Piano for the Young Beginner should move on to Level 1 of Bastien Piano Basics and continue their musical development with happy, effervescent pieces enriched by charming, colorful illustrations. Level 1 starts with review of what was covered in Primer Level and simple tunes in C Major position. The student is required to play single notes or parallel octaves between the hands at this point. There is also a review of sharps, flats, and the C Major chord . The two-note dominant seventh is presented. Later, five finger positions of F Major and both G Major positions are covered, as are their tonic (3 note) and dominant seventh (2 note) chords. Bass clef line notes and space notes are drilled and a few pages later the treble clef notes are drilled. James Bastien. Bastien Piano Basics takes a multi-key, chordal approach. Reading begins in C Major position. Supplementary books are correlated page-by-page with each “Piano” lesson book. This carefully planned curriculum, with its gradual pacing, provides excellent reinforcement, ensuring the success of beginning students. The Primer Level starts with an orientation to the keyboard, specifically targeting groups of two and three black keys. Five 4-8 measure tunes on black keys only kick off this level, with simple rhythms of quarter, half and whole notes in prereading notation (letter names written in noteheads). Next comes an orientation to white keys and their letter names with eight tunes of 4-8 measures each. At this point, one hand plays in the first half of each tune and then the other in the second half, in C Major position. Each staff is then taught individually. The right hand learns to play the treble clef in 4 short tunes. The left hand learns the bass clef in the next 4 tunes. Playing from the grand staff comes next, still in C Major position. Middle C and G Major positions are presented towards the end of the book. From the very first lessons in Book 1, students are making their own music as they explore the piano keyboard through fun improvisation pieces called My Own Song. The beginning of the method introduces finger numbers, the blackkey and white key groups, and basic rhythmic patterns. Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (step, skip, and repeat). Once students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides bass F and treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions. Supplemental books correlate page-by-page with the respective lesson book. Much of the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library features pieces and songs that are recognizable including popular, traditional, patriotic and movie themes. Their settings are tasteful and include exceptional teaching accompaniments. The Off-Staff Starter (Discoverer Book) is definitely the first stop for every young student because it takes time to orient the student to playing the black keys and then the white keys, in both cases using pre-staff notation (i.e. letter names in noteheads). It begins with an introduction to posture, finger numbers and the keyboard. Friendly, child-minded songs on the black keys and then the white give the student their first start at “reading” music. This level also includes an introduction to basic rhythm and notes; time signatures 4/4, 3/4 and 2/4; and culminates in reading from the grand staff, one hand at a time, with thumbs on middle C.
