Color Gamut How often have we prepared an image in Adobe Photoshop, only to find that the vibrant colors could not be accurately reproduced with CMYK color inks. What looked so bright and intense onscreen creen turned t urned out subdued ubdu ed on on-pres -press s. The reason reason for f or this t his is that each each device,w device, whet hether her it ’s a scanner, a monitor or a printer, has a certain limitation on the colors that can be used. The range of available colors is called the gamut. The visible visible spect spectrum,wh rum, what at we are capabl capable e of seeing, seeing, has the widest spectrum of colors or gamut. The range of colors available from scanners and monitors that use RGB colors and printers that use CMYK MYK colors colors can be greatly greatl y reduced. Hexachrome, Hexachrome,on on the t he other other hand, has a gamut that is significantly larger than CMYK color inks for offset offset printing print ing.. Now Now,, color reproduction reproduction capabiliti capabilities es are limited limit ed only by the capabilities of the scanner or monitor. Color ol or Space Full-color printing is traditionally done with four-color process. The CMYK color space is limited to colors which can be defined as 0 to

Computer monitors use red, green and blue to reproduce colors. This is the RGB color space. It includes colors which can be defined defined as 0 to 100% red, green red, green and blue b lue and are scaled scaled from 0 to 255.The 255.The RG RGB color color space includes inclu des different different colors colors than than the t he CMYK color space. This is why you can see colors on your monitor which you cannot canno t repro rep rodu duce ce usin using g CMY CMYK K. RGB is larger larger than t han CMYK CMYK,but it still does not include all colors visible to the human eye. The CIELAB (L*a*b*) color space is an international standard which includes all colors visible to the human eye.CIE stands for Commis ommi ssion Internationale Internatio nale de l'E l 'Eclaira clairage ge which w hich developed the t he CIELAB color space in 1976.The L* in CIELAB stands for the color's bright brig htnes ness s or luminance lu minance value, value,a* a* stands stands for the th e color's posit position ion on the red-green axis and b* stands for the color's position on the yellow-blue axis. Color changes on any axis in the CIELAB color space are measured in units of Delta E.A Delta E of one (1) is defined as the smallest color change visible to the human eye.Delta E is used to communica communi cate te changes in color for fo r color correction as well as quality control. This may sound complicated, but it is a simple intuitive way to communicate color changes. Because CIELAB is device independent and covers the complete color spectrum,it is also the ideal way to archive images. Images can be converted from CIELAB to CMYK. Scanners canners,, monito moni tors rs and printers prin ters detect, detect , transmit transmit and record color informa inform at ion in different di fferent wa w ays. ys. In an an uncalibrated uncalibr ated system,a ystem,an n image scanned canned on three th ree different scanners canners will wil l result result in three t hree different separations. If we print these three scans on three different printers,we will get nine different reproductions of the original. There are many reasons for these differences.Light source, filters and optics opt ics in the t he scanner scanner,, as well as inks, inks, dyes and tone t one reproduction reproduct ion in the printer are just some reasons why the final reproduction differs. That is the reality that we have to live with in color reproduction. But how can can we stil stilll get a color reproduction reproduction in the t he above scenario where the nine images all look the same and also match the original? In a traditional CMYK-based high-end workflow, the scanner is calibrated so that color corrections, gray balance and tone reproduction are translating the light signals from the scanner’s CMYK values that will reproduce a match to the original on the proofing system used. However, the proofing system is made to match the printing conditions. RGB scans scans inst i nstead ead of CMYK At the present time,no scanner can scan directly into Hexa He xachrom chrome. e.F Further, urt her, tthere is no reason reason to scan scan an image image in CMYK MYK because these values already are compressed into the CMYK color space.Instead, scans should be made in RGB which is the largest color gamut a scanner can capture images with, particularly as it corresponds to the filters used in the color separation of reflected light from the original. Some older scanners are not able to scan images in CIE CIELAB LAB or RG RGB forma form at, due to t o an intern in ternal al color compu com putt er which transforms the RGB light values into CMYK before the image data is sent to the Mac.In such a scenario it is possible to convert the CMYK data to RGB in Adobe Photoshop. This transformation ma tion will not increa increase the color gamut, but gamut, but by utilizing uti lizing the satusaturation control in Photoshop, the overall color fullness can be increased. However, this will create colors that will not match the original image completely.

Color ol orS Sync Pro Profi fi les Whether you scan in RGB or convert CMYK images into RGB,the separation software needs to know what the final reproduction shou hould ld look loo k like. lik e.R RGB values alone are not an exact exact measure measure of color. color.S Similarly, imi larly,wh what at is red for one one scanner scanner will wil l be seen seen as a differdifferent red on another scanner. What is gray on one monitor will have a blue color cast on another monitor. To make a good color match from original orig inal to the final final printed image, the image,t he sepa separation ration soft softwa ware re needs to know more about the scanner or monitor.During the last last few few years,an years,an indu indus stry st standard has been created to to sol solve ve this problem. In 1993, 1993,a group of leading leading software oft ware and hard hardware ware compacompanies in the t he printing printi ng and publis publi shing indus i ndustry try formed the Internatio International nal Color Consortium onsortium (ICC).The ).The result was a standard for how to describe the color characteristics of any color input or output out put device. The device. The characteriza characterizatition on cons con sists ists of a digit di gital al file and an ICC profile for each color device. This file acts like a color interpreter pret er between bet ween the t he device device and a reference color col or space, space, CIELAB LAB. In the th e Mac, Mac, the ICC ICC profiles pro files are hand handled led by the t he Colo ColorS rSync ync sys system extension. The fact that ICC is a standard means that an application that th at utili ut iliz zes ICC profiles profil es,, like HexW HexWrench, wil rench, willl be b e able to reproduce the color images from any scanner, digital camera or monitor representation very accurately. The only thing that is needed is an ICC profile for the source color device and the destination device. Charact haracterizat erization is i s not at all all related to t o cali calibr bratio ation.A n.A characcharacterization of a color rendering device in the graphic arts industry is t oday usually usually unders und erstt ood ood as a creatio creation n of an ICC profil profile e for the t he device.Without a characterization of the scanner,HexWrench does not know how the colors on the original look,it only knows what the scanner says that the image looks like in RGB values. The scanner ICC profile acts like an interpreter and describes to HexWrench how the scanner describes colors in RGB. It is very important to understand that a scanner profile does not alter the th e wa w ay the t he sca scanner reads images, images, rath rather er it is a data data file fil e that contains information on how the scanner sees color. If you create create profiles pro files with wit h a profile profil e crea creat ion applica app licatition,it on,it is alwaysrecommended to calibrate the scanner before creating the profile.

An example of a Hexac Hexachrome hrome simulati on made th rough ICC ICC profi les To simulate a Hexachrome separation of a scanned RGB image to the large color gamut of a DuPont DigitalWaterP DigitalWaterProof composite prin ter,the ter,t he following followi ng occurs o ccurs:: RGB scan is tagged with wit h an ICCprofile profi le for the th e same same device on o n which w hich the th e 1 The RG image was scanned scanned.. For optimu opt imum m result results,t s,the he ICC ICC profile profi le should be b e based based on tthe he same film type t ype as as the original that t hat will be reproduced. 2 The image color data is converted by the CMM into CIELAB. 3 To simulate simul ate Hexachrome on the th e four-color four- color device,t devic e,the he CIELAB LAB values values for the th e RG RGB scan are converted into device specific dot percent values through the use of a Hexachrome Hexachrome ICC ICC profile. The profi le.The device specific colors col ors are then converted con verted back b ack to CIELAB.When the colors are converted back to CIELAB,the image is a representation of the t he colors that can be printed print ed in Hexachrome. Hexachrome. NOTE:The CIE CIELA LAB B values are mapped mapp ed into int o the t he Hexachrom Hexachrome e color gamut where, dependent on t he image, color compression takes place.Color compression is required where an area of color cannot be achieved in print. This is because while Hexachrome is 50% larger than CMYK,there are some color areas that, due to t he technical technical limit lim itati ations ons of a subtr subtractive active color printing print ing process, are still ti ll not achievable in print .

The illustrat ions below are two-dimensional repres represenentati ons of conversions conversions between different color spaces spac es.. The illustr atio ns are are only for pr es esentation entation purpose and and are not derived from measured data.A color gamut is a t hree-dime hree-dimenional nional body and is thus diffi cult to present pres ent in prin t.
