This is ingenuity delivered
We apply our knowledge to deliver better solutions. Our expertise is the result o our long track record in the subsea industry, our involvement with a wide range o ambitious and proessional customers, and the challenges that we have aced and solved together.
We have created new technologies ever since. Faced with challenges in the North Sea, the oil industry had to come up with safe and reliable solutions for the development and operation of deepwater elds and challenging reservoirs. Aker Solutions and other players in that region became pioneers in subsea eld development and increased oil recovery. In 1985 one Aker Solutions engineer came up with the idea of moving gas compression equipment from the platform topside and placing it at the bottom of the sea. The subsea gas compression solution generates pressure which allows the hydrocarbons to travel through the pipelines to a platform or receiving terminal onshore. Thirty years later, his visionary idea – rst captured with a pencil on a
paper serviette – is now becoming reality at a deepwater eld in the Norwegian Sea. Our innovative solutions are both big and small. The development of high integrity well intervention systems is a response to the aging installed base of subsea wells and the operators’ need for the increased recovery of hydrocarbons. Our well intervention system acts as the multi-tool within the operators’ tool-box enabling easy well access for maintenance and optimisation work to be performed down hole. A small device that can make a major difference.
We understand the challenge. We apply the knowledge. We create and use technologies to provide the products, systems and services that deliver solutions to customers. This is ingenuity. Delivered.
These are just a few examples of how we apply our knowledge and how new solutions become reality when we tackle challenges with competence.

System engineering
Aker Solutions has an extensive portolio o subsea projects with a range o technical requirements to optimise the feld lie and production profle or our clients.
Aker Solutions has an extensive portfolio of subsea projects with a range of technical requirements to optimise the eld life and production prole for our clients. In a technology driven industry, Aker Solutions has met client demands for increasingly complex and integrated technical solutions, challenging existing ranges with regards to temperatures, pressures, water depths, step-outs, and monitoring production parameters. System engineering is the discipline within Aker Solutions that ensures the compatibility of different product solutions within the production system. The main responsibility of system engineering is to verify that all of the products function together as one unied system. A system engineer’s main role is to optimise the subsea production system for installation and production. It is paramount in this respect, to fully recognise the clients’ requirements and needs, but to also understand that product capabilities are equally important. The goal is to safely and efciently install the equipment while achieving high production availability and ensuring the safety integrity of the system. Our system engineers understand the workings and criticality of our complete product portfolio. They have a broad knowledge of trees, manifolds, wellheads, umbilicals, workover, and tie-in systems, as well as the tools and control systems that operate them. They also acknowledge the importance of preparing for a smooth execution for third party intervention and life of eld operations. Throughout the project execution stage, system engineering ensures seamless communication, which provides
the framework and principles that engineering, material philosophy, and documentation requirements rely upon. System engineering provides the holistic framework that is a key success criterion for our clients. Typically system engineering sets the foundation at the concept stage of a project and follows up on this framework throughout the design, manufacturing, testing and nal hand over to the client. System engineering maintains a global overview of the system delivery at all times. Close cooperation with the client is essential and a major success factor is building trust and open communication processes during the project. Aker Solutions’ system engineering deliverables include design basis, material selection, master document lists, master equipment lists, RAM analysis, life cycle information plans, schematics, test programmes and a range of other system analyses. During the project start-up requirements are set and based upon the contract and applicable standards provided by the system engineering team. As the subsea industry goes deeper, further, and to more extreme temperatures, Aker Solutions’ system engineering capabilities will remain at the forefront of technology development. Our clients’ ambition and pursuit for increasing oil and gas recovery, exploiting resources in previously unchartered waters, will cement an increased need for a system approach to deliveries. Aker Solutions believes that this approach will contribute to safer, more reliable, and better quality solutions for our clients in the future.
As the subsea industry goes deeper, urther, and to more extreme temperatures, Aker Solutions’ system engineering capabilities will remain at the oreront o technology development.

Case studies
Technology innovation One thing is very clear in the oil and gas industry. Innovation is going to play a crucial role in maximising oil and gas recovery in challenging environments, in new eld developments and in driving the costs down. Aker Solutions has developed state-of-the-art innovative technologies, which we believe holds the key to our future success. Subsea gas compression
Compressing gas on subsea installations represents a considerable technological accomplishment for the industry as this has never been done before. Aker Solutions’ subsea gas compression technology represents a cost-effective quantum leap that contributes to signicant improvements in recovery rates and the lifetime of gas elds. A unique solution was needed to extract more gas from a eld as it declines over time. Research found that by placing the compressor closer to the well that more gas could be extracted, which in turn boosts the recovery rate of the reservoir. In order to meet our customers need, we developed a complete and patented compression system, which is a collaboration of our well proven and qualied technologies. This technology is now being utilised by Statoil on the Ormen Lange subsea gas compression pilot station and the inaugural Åsgard subsea gas compression system. These projects encompass the combined excellence of subsea processing technology in the world today. Modularised workover systems
Aker Solutions’ latest generation modularised workover system is a standardised state-of-the-art system dening the future for this range of subsea products. The system holds a number of unique qualities that represent a true step change for the oil and gas industry. For the very rst time a single system can perform light well intervention operations on any subsea tree from any subsea vendor. This is performed with the highest safety standards and no intellectual property infringements towards other parties. Operated by semi-submersible rigs, drill ships or light intervention vessels, our light well intervention workover system provides large bore access to any well, which facilitates coiled tubing and wireline operations. Statoil and Aker Oileld Services have taken advantage of our standardised light well intervention system on the Vigdis North East and Tulip projects, respectively. The Vigdis North East has used our workover system to perform normal start-up operations for eld development and lifecycle well maintenance for ve different elds in the North Sea. The rst workover system to be installed on Aker Oileld Service’s Skandi Aker for the Tulip project enables a vessel to
Standardised workover systems
perform riser based light well intervention activities. The emergency disconnect package and lower riser package act as the main barrier towards the well while performing intervention operations. In an emergency situation the robust valves will be able to seal the well, disconnect the riser system from the well and re-establish a safe state of operation. Our workover systems are a multi-use tool which supports the installation of equipment and prepares the well for production. During eld life, workover equipment is used during the maintenance of subsea wells to improve oil recovery. We believe these innovative solutions are just the beginning for Aker Solutions. With new projects coming online, new opportunities arising, the world is our oyster and it is our job to provide innovation solutions to the offshore industry in the future.
Fast track projects Over the past few years fast-track projects have taken off on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. As operators look for faster and more economical ways to extract oil from smaller or time critical elds, we have looked at how projects can be executed faster while maintaining the same high quality. With Statoil, we have developed a standard catalogue of subsea production systems (SPS) to meet this need. The beauty of this approach is that the conceptual and tendering stages are compressed. Since the development is based on standard equipment, critical supply items can be pre-ordered earlier, the work

processes simplied, and the drawings re-used. The result is faster project execution and lower costs, factors which are important when developing smaller elds or tying in time critical resources to existing installations. In June 2011, Skuld became the rst project following this approach awarded to Aker Solutions by Statoil. The initial contract was for three template-manifold structures, 11 subsea trees, a control system, a tie-in system and rental tooling. Since the initial award of the Skuld project Aker Solutions has also won fast-track projects for the Svalin and Vilje South elds with Statoil. Other operators are also following the same approach. The Dong Trym and Oselvar projects awarded to Aker Solutions in 2008 were based on standard designs executed by one project team. In 2011, Total awarded the Atla project to Aker Solutions. This is a highly exible satellite concept based on standard technology which enables both conventional eld developments and utilisation of the ‘keeper well’ concept where exploration or appraisal wells are converted to production wells. Internationally, fast track developments have been executed as part of our RapidSolution™ programme where customers have called off standard wellsets (wellheads, trees, controls and tie-in systems) from our inventory of standard components and manufacturing slots. As many of the larger oil and gas elds mature on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, fast-track projects for smaller elds or time critical resources are where the oil and gas industry is heading in the future. We are well equipped, with standardised solutions and experienced personnel, to help our customers succeed in this quest.
Kikeh manifold installation
Large conventional projects Aker Solutions is a leader in subsea engineering, manufacturing and installation activities. We have experience with developing large conventional projects in every corner of the globe, working with various clients to increase oil recovery. In the North Sea, a major milestone we delivered was well set number 100 to the giant Troll eld in 2011. This giant eld is set to produce for many decades to come and is a cornerstone of Aker Solutions’ subsea history and future. Aker Solutions started developing new technically qualied products for Eni Norge’s largest project development, Goliat. Located in the Barents Sea, in a very harsh environment the Goliat eld is subjected to sub-zero temperatures and high winds. The new products include innovative environmental monitoring systems to protect the areas abundant sea and bird life, which is a highly important focus within this area. In West Africa, Aker Solutions delivered its largest deepwater project so far to the giant eld, Dalia. Initially the project started out with 42 well sets in the rst phase of the project and was later expanded to 78 well sets. Providing the subsea production system for Asia’s rst subsea deepwater development and bringing a major deepwater discovery online in record time in a region where the knowledge base and infrastructure for such developments had just began to take off, was a major feat for Aker Solutions. The Kikeh project enabled our Malaysian operations the opportunity to deliver a large world class subsea deepwater SPS to the client Murphy Oil Sabah. The original scope of supply was enhanced with the award of the Kikeh extensions/ Siakap North-Petai due to our strong presence and development in Malaysia which ensured deliveries were well coordinated with local client schedules. Aker Solutions was the principle subsea contractor of India’s rst subsea gas eld, located in the KG-D6 block in the Bay of Bengal. At the time the KG-D6 was the largest subsea project worked on by Aker Solutions, with the deepest water depth and shortest delivery schedules. Our experience spans from shallow water to the ultra-deep and from tropical conditions to the harsh conditions of the Arctic. We have the experience and the know-how to get our customers to where they want to be.
