For Immediate Release www.Chargers.com Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 (858) 874-4500 The San Diego Chargers will take on the Baltimore Ravens in their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Qualcomm Stadium. The AFC North’s Ravens were a Wild Card Playoff entry in 2008 and advanced to the AFC Championship Game where they lost, 23-14, to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. An 11-5 squad a year ago, the Ravens opened the 2009 season with a 38-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, while the Chargers posted a late fourth-quarter 24-20 come-from-behind win over the Raiders in Oakland on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. In celebration of the team’s 50th Anniversary season, Chargers Founding Owner Barron Hilton (1960-65) will serve as the game’s honorary captain and will conduct the coin toss.
Series History This is just the seventh meeting between the Chargers and Ravens in a series that is tied, 3-3. The Chargers’ 32-14 win in the last contest in 2007 halted a three-game losing streak to the Ravens. In that contest, Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes, two to Antonio Gates and one to Chris Chambers, while LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 77 yards and became the 23rd player in NFL history to go over 10,000 career rushing yards. Nate Kaeding tied his career high with four field goals while the defense recorded four sacks, including one by Shawne Merriman, and limited Baltimore to just 210 total yards.
Chargers-Ravens Connections For the Chargers, LB Shawne Merriman is from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He prepped at Frederick Douglass High School before moving on to a stellar career at the University of Maryland. DT Jamal Williams is a native of Washington D.C. For the Ravens, Head Coach John Harbaugh is the brother of former Chargers quarterback and former University of San Diego Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron held the same post with the Chargers from 2002-06. Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach John “Mother” Dunn was the Bolts’ head strength coach from 1990-96. QBs coach Hue Jackson is a Los Angeles native who held coaching positions at USC and Cal State-Fullerton. Secondary coach Chuck Pagano is the older brother of Chargers’ Linebackers coach John Pagano. Assistant Director of Player Programs, Harry Swayne, played tackle for the Chargers from 1991-96 and was a member of the Chargers ’94 AFC Championship squad. LB Brandon Ayanbadejo is the brother of former San Diego State FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo. Other Ravens with Southern California hometown ties include G-C Chris Chester (Tustin), T Oniel Cousins (Fullerton) and T Kelly Talavou (Fountain Valley).
Press releases, player bios, notes and a downloadable version of the Chargers’ 2009 Media Guide are available at www.Chargers.com. Bolts in home openers • The Chargers are 31-18 (.633) in home openers. • This is the Chargers’ first-ever home opener vs. Baltimore.

Bolts celebrate Blue Bombers The Little League World Series Champion Park View Chula Vista Blue Bombers will be the Chargers’ special guests at Sunday’s home opener against the Ravens. Each player is going to receive a powder blue Chargers jersey and the entire team will be introduced to the crowd before the game. A couple weeks ago shortly after their return from Williamsport, Pa., the Blue Bombers, so named because of the LLWS record 59 home runs the team hit during the tournament, took a tour of Chargers Park and watched the team practice. Afterward, Head Coach Norv Turner had the players form a tunnel and each Park View player was given a chance to run through the tunnel, receiving handshakes and high-fives from the Chargers’ players. Several Bolts, including Luis Castillo, who was one of the team’s biggest fans, stuck around after practice and signed autographs for the new world champs.
Home Whites This Sunday against Baltimore, and for the Chargers’ next home game against Miami on Sept. 27, the team will wear their road white jerseys and Navy blue pants. The Chargers routinely do so for September home games when temperatures in San Diego are typically at their highest. The Ravens and Dolphins on the other hand will be wearing their home dark-colored jerseys and relegated to the north, sunny sideline at Qualcomm Stadium.
Tough Stretch Sunday’s game against the Ravens begins a stretch in which each of the Chargers’ next three opponents were in the playoffs a year ago, including both participants in the AFC Championship Game, the Ravens and Steelers (Oct. 4). The Chargers, who play the NFL’s 17th toughest schedule (based on 2008 W-L records), face only three ’08 playoff teams (New York Giants, Philadelphia and Tennessee) after this stretch. Cumulatively, the Chargers’ 16 opponents in 2008 were 123-131-2 (.484)
Championships begin in the division The Chargers have been the rulers of late in the AFC West, winning four of the five last division crowns. Since 2004, including last Monday night’s win over the Raiders, the Chargers are 24-7 (.774) in the division, including 11-0 against Oakland, 6-4 against Denver and 7-3 against the Chiefs. The Chargers went 5-1 in AFC West play in 2008, including a 52-21 win over the Broncos in last year’s season finale to seal the crown. The Chargers’ 24 inner-division wins since ’04 are tied with Indianapolis for the second-most in the NFL during that span behind New England’s 25. Pittsburgh has the third-most at 23. Since the NFL realigned the divisions in 2002, the Chargers are the only AFC West team to win consecutive titles.
Rivers adds to impressive resume Last Monday night, Philip Rivers led the Chargers to his 10th fourthquarter come-from-behind victory, and his third over the Raiders, as the Chargers overcame a 20-17 deficit with 2:30 remaining to win, 24-20. A complete list of Rivers’ first nine comeback wins can be found on page 107 of the team’s media guide (http://www.chargers.com/team/media-guide.html). On Monday night’s game-winning drive, Rivers was calm as ever, efficiently completing 6-of-7 for 79 yards. Throughout his career, Rivers has been one of the NFL’s best fourthquarter passers and Monday night was no exception as he completed 10of-12 for 144 yards and a touchdown for a 144.4 fourth-quarter rating, which was fourth-best in the NFL among opening day QBs. Last year, Rivers ranked second in the NFL in fourth-quarter passer rating, posting a mark of 111.7 as he completed 90-of-141 (.638) for 1,148 yards with 12 TDs and just two INTs.
Rivers re-ups On Monday, Aug. 24, quarterback Philip Rivers signed a six-year contract extension that will run thru the 2015 season. The Bolts’ starting quarterback since 2006, Rivers has led the team to three straight playoff seasons. His career record as a starter is 37-18 (.673), including playoffs. His record at Qualcomm Stadium is even more impressive, 22-5 for a .815 winning percentage. He also holds the team’s record for career passer rating (92.7).
Sproles does it again For the second time in the Chargers’ last three games, Darren Sproles scored the game-winning touchdown. He did so in the Chargers’ 2008 AFC Wild Card Playoff win with a 22-yard run in overtime to defeat the Indianapolis Colts, and again last Monday night, scampering five yards with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter to beat the Raiders in the season opener. Sproles finished the Raiders game with 246 all-purpose yards (23 rush, 43 receiving, 10 punt return and 170 kickoff return) for his eighth-career 200-yard game (including playoffs). Sproles’ eight 200-yarder efforts are second in team history to LaDainian Tomlinson’s 12.
Aztec Pride The Chargers opened the 2009 season with three San Diego State University alums on the active roster Antwan Applewhite, Brandyn Dombrowski and Kassim Osgood. It is the most former Aztecs the Chargers have had on their roster to open a season since 1974, when four were on the team. That ’74 squad featured SDSU alums Bobby Howard, Jeff Staggs, Jesse Freitas and Don Horn.
My time ‘has’ come One of the most exciting stories to follow this season will be that of defensive end Ogemdi Nwagbuo (OH-gem-dee NEW-wahboe). His parents were both born in Nigeria and even though Ogemdi was born in San Diego, he was given a Nigerian name, which translated to English means “my time will come.” Nwagbuo is the family’s surname. Nwagbuo, who registered his first-career sack in the fourth quarter of the Chargers Monday Night Football opener in Oakland, got a very late start playing football. He did not play as a prep at Mt. Miguel High School in the San Diego suburb of Spring Valley. After graduating, Nwagbuo enrolled at Southwestern College in San Diego and got his first exposure to the game. A successful two-year stint led to a scholarship to Michigan State where he earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies. After originally signing with the New York Giants in 2008, Nwagbuo was signed by the Chargers to their practice squad late in the ’08 season and re-signed for 2009.
OL teams up with Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation The Chargers offensive line has teamed up with the Marine CorpsLaw Enforcement Foundation to raise money for the children of Marines and law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. For every rushing touchdown the Bolts score this year, each offensive lineman will contribute $100 toward the fund. Chargers fans are welcome to join the OL and contribute as well. Information is available online at http://www.mc-lef.org/.
San Diego history hits the big screen NFL Films and Warner Home Video are currently playing “San Diego Chargers: The Complete History” at the UltraStar Theaters at Hazard Center (www.UltraStarMovies.com). The 85-minute film, in state-of-the-art “Pure Digital” cinema, highlights the Chargers’ first 49 years leading up to the team’s 50th Anniversary Season in 2009. NFL Films chronicles the team’s dominance through the early years in the American Football League, the offensive powerhouse Air Coryell squads through today’s division-winning teams. The film includes rare sideline sound from players and coaches wires and vintage radio accounts from such notable Chargers greats as Lance Alworth, Sid Gillman, Dan Fouts, Junior Seau, Stan Humphries, LaDainian Tomlinson and many more. Starting today, Tuesday, Sept. 15, the film is also available for purchase on DVD at the Chargers Team Store at Qualcomm Stadium, as well as at retail outlets throughout San Diego.
Highlights from Week 1 at Oakland • The Chargers rallied from a 20-17 fourth-quarter deficit with 2:30 remaining to win the game, 24-20, on a five-yard touchdown run by Darren Sproles. • Sproles finished the night with 246 all-purpose yards, including kickoff returns of 66 and 59 yards. • Philip Rivers engineered the game-winning drive, completing 6of-7 for 79 yards. Rivers led two fourth-quarter drives against the Raiders, both resulting in touchdowns. He capped the first with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson. During that drive, Rivers went 4-for-5 for 65 yards, including a 10-yarder to Antonio Gates on 3rd-and-3 and a 15-yarder to Sproles on 3rd-and-12. • Quentin Jammer had an interception on the game’s opening series and later capped a secondquarter three-and-out with an open field passed defensed on third down. • Stephen Cooper set up the Chargers’ first touchdown — a secondquarter one-yard run by LT — with a tackle, forced fumble and fumnble recovery against Darren McFadden just one play after tackling him in the backfield for a two-yard loss. • Gates also had a hand in the LT touchdown drive as his 24-yard catch to the one on a 3rd-and-12 set up the score.
Workout partners Linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips spent part of their offseason training together at Gold’s Gym in Los Angeles. According to The PressEnterprise, they pushed each other in weightlifting and cone drills during their workout sessions. Merriman, Phillips and fellow linebacker Stephen Cooper all share a townhouse in Hollywood during the offseason.
Hidden gems Chargers General Manager continued his impressive trend of finding key undrafted free agent players with safety C.J. Spillman of Marshall making the final 53-man roster. Spillman had a solid preseason that included an interception in the preseason finale against San Francisco. All told, the Chargers have 12 former undrafted free agents on the roster, 11 of whom were signed by Smith, including Pro Bowlers Kassim Osgood, Antonio Gates and Kris Dielman. Last year’s leading tackler, Stephen Cooper is also a former undrafted free agent mined by Smith.
