Note : ① Remove the battery and the CF card prior to dissassmbly. ② When disassembling, make sure to memorize the processing state of wires, screws to be fixed and their types, etc. ③ Because electrical parts are easily damaged by static electricity, make sure that you are well earthed/grounded. ※ This product is equipped with the VR mechanism. When the following components are replaced with new ones, the VR adjustment is necessary. LCD COVER, MONITOR LCD, VF1 PCB AND TB4 PCB ・Remove the joint unit ① . ・Remove the four screws ② . ・The LCD back cover ③ can be removed. ・Remove the three screws ④ . ・The LCD holder side ⑤ and the LCD front cover ⑥ can be removed. ・Remove the FPC's ⑦ and ⑧ and then remove the monitor LCD ⑨ . ・Remove the connector ⑩ . ・Remove the spacer holder LCD ⑪ and then remove the connector ⑫ . ・Remove the connector ⑬ . ・Remove the solder ⑭ at 2 places. Position adjustment of VR lens Be sure to make this adjustment whenever the below part is replaced. ・ Main-PCB unit B1001 ・ Gyro-PCB unit B1003 B551 ・ VR unit (1) Device: J61209 ・ VR lens position adjusting tool J61209A ・ Connecting wire J65069 ・ VR lens position adjusting software ・ PC (with RS232C terminal) ・ Stabilized power supply ・ RS232C cable (with 9 pins, Female 9-pin connectors at both ends.) (2) Adjustment item: ・ VCM polarity adjustment This adjusts the polarity (positive or negative) automatically of the terminal of VCM (Voice Coil Motor). ・ VR lens position adjustment This calculates the center positioning of the VR lens by touching of the VR lens on the mechanical limits of 4 directions. (3) Procedure: ① Connect devices as shown below. Supply 8.7V from the stabilized power supply. Set up the lens unit at the same position as when it is assembled into the normal-positioned camera body (with the connection-FPC downward).

VAA28001-R.3640.A OPERATION CHECK AND RESOLUTION CHECK Carry out checking when the lens unit is disassembled/repaired. (1) Operation check (a) Turn on the power, drive the zoom and then turn off the power. Perform this operation sequence several times. (b) Perform the release operation several times to make sure that the operation is normal. When there is no problem in the above operation check, perform the following resolution check. (2) Resolution check Take a picture of the high precision resolution chart (J63079) and make sure that the resolution pieces are within the standard. Standard of resolution pieces: Center: 1450 TV pcs. or more, Periphery: 900 TV pcs. or more (Reference: The resolution whose unit is "TV pcs." shows the total of the white and black stripes which can be distinguished on the TV screen.) (a) Set the camera as follows: Photography mode: A, Image quality mode: FINE, Image size: 8M and Speed light mode: Flash cancel mode. Then, take a picture. (b) The luminance unevenness of the chart does not affect the photography. Take a picture with the luminance at which aperture is full (ISO100, 1/15 ~ 1/250). (c) Carry out checking at the zoom position of WIDE, MIDDLE and TELE. Set the photography distance as follows: WIDE: approx. 0.6m, MIDDEL: approx. 2.0m and TELE: approx. 5.0m. Set the camera so that the chart is seen on the whole of the camera's LCD screen and fix it on the tripod. (d) Open the photographed image through Photoshop and check the resolution with the 100% life-sized displayed image. (e) For the resolution of the frame center and the 4 corners of the periphery, check whether the white and black can be distinguished at the 4 red circle places in the figure below. If there is a problem in the above (1) or (2), it is necessary to replace the lens barrel unit with a new one.

VR-function operation check After the VR lens position is adjusted, be sure to make this operation check. How to inspect: （1）Set the camera to Shooting mode (S) 1/30, Image Quality (FINE), Image size (8M), and Flash mode (Flash cancel). （2）There is no designation of a chart, but use an object with regular patterns and high contrast (e.g. a calendar with figures in line, high definition resolution chart, etc). （3）Hold the camera in hands, and take shots by swaying the camera up and down in the width of 1-2 cm. （4）Set the zoom position to TELE, and the shooting distance to 3-5 m. Check a difference among 6 images, which were shot by turning on and off the VR switch 3 times. In case the VR-function does NOT work (ref. Fig.1), the lens unit should be replaced.

5. Installing USB driver If the USB driver is necessary, install Nikon View via CD-ROM packed with the camera. 6. Pattern box
Before using the pattern box, turn its power on to carry out "Aging" approx. 30 minutes: the color temperature should be 3100 ± 20K by the adjustment with the color meter, and the luminance should be 900 ± 20cd/m2 by the adjustment with the luminance meter. When using the pattern box and for a while after its power turns off, the lamp and its surroundings are subject to high temperatures, so care should be taken when handling. • Procedure for correcting Pattern Box Note: Be sure to perform the aging correction. 1) Measure the measuring point (center of diffusion plate) with the Color Meter (J63081). 2) Adjust the pattern box so that the color temperature should be 3100 ± 20K by using "VR for adjustment of the color temperature". 3) Measure the center of the diffusion plate with the Luminance Meter BM-3000 (J63068). 4) Adjust the pattern box so that the luminance should be 900 ± 20cd/m2 by using "Knob for luminance adjustment". 5) Repeat from 1) to 4) So that the color temperature should be 3100 ± 20k and luminance should be 900 ± 20cd/m2 .

※ For the lens adjustment, choose either the infinity adjustment with the collimator or the 2.25-m adjustment with the adjustment firmware. ※ For 2.25-m adjustment, it is necessary to (re)write the adjustment firmware, so before the adjustment, be sure to (re)write the firmware. Also, after completing the adjustment, do NOT forget to restore the original product firmware. Procedure for setting Adjustment firmware 1) Save the adjustment firmware and the product firmware in any folder. 2) Start up "DscCalDi.exe" and click on "Firmware" button on the main menu to write the adjustment firmware. (If the camera is activated after completing writing the adjustment firmware, "SERVICE" is indicated on LCD panel.) 3) Follow the instructions of the below [How-to]. 4) Start "DscCalDi.exe" and click "Firmware" on the main menu to write the product firmware. [Preparations] • Set the Siemens star chart. • Turn the power switch of the camera to on. [Conditions] • The siemens star chart should be A3-size or larger (Copy and enlarge A4-size siemens chart included in the service manual for the usage.) • Illumination over the object should be 400 lux ± 10% • Set the siemens star chart and the camera (front surface of lens) at 225 cm ± 3 cm distance between them. Correct the upper level of defective 2000 pixels from the brightest number of CCD pixels.. Applied tool(s)
• General components Gap: 0.3mm or less Difference in height: 0.15mm or less • When the battery cover is closed: Gap: 0.6mm or less (Difference between right and left must not be noticeable.) • Difference in height: Any convex section must not exist from the Mg end face. (Perform measurement under free condition with battery.) • There must be no noticeable damage, stain, sink mark, welded mark, unevenness, crack, oil exudation, etc. (Observe and check it by naked eyes under fluorescent lamp and natural sunshine.)
Visual observation
• While operating, any irregularities or irregular noise shall not be required. (Check it by shaking the camera while operating. Lightly hit the camera onto the Linoleum-laid desk while operating.) • No cave-ins of the buttons shall be required. • Malfunctions shall not be required. • Operator must feel "click" on each button. • "Click" must occur when or after a switch is ON.
