POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN ADVA NCED CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT (PGP ACM) INTRODUCTION This inter-disciplinary programme builds upon the concepts and methodologies of Management, Engineering, Architecture, Law, Information Technology, Social and Behavioural Sciences and combines theory with practice.
with an emphasis on managing construction business / projects at domestic and global level, who can accomplish responsibility in diverse fields and has following competencies: - Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of corporate management. - Skills and techniques of construction project management. - Knowledge and application of latest technologies. - Proficiency in finance and people management skills. - Understanding of construction and real estate development business, management of facilities, building services and infrastructure development projects. - Facility to apply the knowledge and skills to the effective delivery of the projects. - Competency to handle a project in the specialised construction sector. - Knowledge of information technology tools for professionalizing IT system in construction.
This programme has been designed to suit the needs of students from India and other countries in the Afro-Asian region. The programme helps the technically qualified engineers and architects to develop requisite managerial skills and further sharpen the technical skills to manage and execute the complex and large engineering projects. The curriculum is a judicious blend of theoretical and applied courses both in general management and construction management accompanied with practical experience and project work. Theoretical courses aim to improve the student’s understanding of fundamental concepts and relationships that characterise the changing world in which managers must operate. Applied courses, which occupy the bulk of the students’ time, link the theoretical studies to practical problems in the construction, infrastructure and real estate development projects. Practical experience is gained by a student through construction practice, site visits and summer training where the students learn to practice their newly acquired managerial skills under the supervision of an expert. Research gives the ability of scientific analysis of a problem and report writing skills. Computer application skills and knowledge in managerial decision making are imparted through special courses in workshops / seminars.

This programme commenced in 1987 with UNDP and ILO technical assistance procured for NICMAR by the Government of India. The syllabi were first developed in 1986 at an international workshop of experts of management in the construction industry and in co-operation with the faculty members of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Michigan (USA), Loughborough University (UK), Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad) and other leading management and technology institutes in India and several industry leaders.
Indian economy is currently witnessing rapid growth in the infrastructure sector. Government of India is also promoting the infrastructure development with huge investment in this sector. The infrastructure development projects consist of power, transport, airports, seaports, dams, bridges, telecom, oil and gas, water supply etc. Graduates of this programme would become planning engineers, designers of infrastructure projects, controllers and monitors of construction procurement and co-ordination executives and appraisers of project proposals submitted to agencies for funding.
The programme is structured to prepare NICMAR graduates for undertaking professional responsibilities demanding high proficiency in skills of applications of latest information technology, people management, project finance, international markets - all with a special reference to infrastructure development and real estate projects. The curriculum has been reviewed from time to time to incorporate the latest advancements in Construction, Real Estate, Infrastructure and Project (CRIP) industry and built a strong competence in diversified areas.
ii. Real Estate Development and Management Real Estate Development and Management (REDM) has become an important business stream in the country. It is a high risk, high profit and competitive business. Many industrial houses and corporates have diversified into this business. It is also attracting foreign investors. Metro centres are the hubs of this sector activity, though the growth is also rapidly seen at most urban centres. Developers must develop competitive advantage and loss containment strategies. It has created a demand for professional managers who are specialised in the specific business environment.

Consulting Organisations and Companies from manufacturi ng / service sectors also visit the Campus for recruitment.
DURATION AND ORGANISATION The programme duration is two years. It is organised into 7 trimesters, each trimester of approximate 13 weeks’ duration with suitable breaks. Terms 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 are devoted to classroom learning, acquiring hands-on experience in computer
OBJECTIVES The objective of this programme is to develop a mature and responsible IT savvy professional techno-manager 1
workshop, managerial skills workshop, construction practice workshop, site visits and learning research techniques and presentation skills. Summer th Training is scheduled in 4 trimester and th specialisation in the 6 trimester. Students sponsored by their employers and those from abroad, can return to their respective organisations / countries for summer training.
ADMISSION UNDER SPONSORED CATEGORY
ELIGIBILITY
1. Satisfy all the eligibility criteria for admission to the respective two-year full time Post Graduate Programmes of the Institute as announced in the admission advertisement. 2. Must have appeared for the admission process of the Institute including Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview. 3. On selection should be willing to pay tuition fee, which will be 50% higher than the regular tuition fee for the respective programme. 4. Must be willing to forego the on campus placement assistance both for summer as well as final placement. 5. Produce an undertaking, duly signed by the sponsoring individual / organisation as provided in Part III of the application form.
The Institute has the policy of admitting a limited number of students under sponsored category, not exceeding 5% of the total students admitted. Candidates to be considered for admission under sponsored category must fulfil the following requirements:
Candidates with a degree in Engineering / Architecture / Planning, from a recognised institution are eligible. Candidates seeking admission are required to secure minimum 50% aggregate marks at graduation level. Final year students can also apply. ADMISSION PROCEDURE Selection of students is made by the Selection Committee. Admissions work is handled centrally at Pune Campus. Those interested in admission to the programme have to apply online, pay fees and upload documents through our website: www.nicmar.ac.in or direct link: http://admission.nicmar.ac.in or download the application form from website and send it to the Head, Admissions, NICMAR Pune, along with the application fee and required documents mentioned in the application form within the specified date. All enclosures must be submitted. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
FEES AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE The details of total amount of fees payable for this programme over two years are given below. The security deposit (Rs. 3000/-) is refundable on completion of the programme (after adjustment of dues if any from the student).
All applications for admission are scrutinised and eligibility is established on the basis of documents submitted. All eligible candidates will be invited to undergo the selection procedure, which comprises of Written Test, Group Discussion, Personal Interview and Rating of Application. The details are as follows:
The tuition fee includes term registration fee and other charges: i.e., fees for computer workshop, construction practice workshop, managerial skills workshop, examinations, evaluation, project work and assessments, library and students’ welfare fund. The Institute provides a free group accident insurance and group mediclaim policy covers to all students for a period of 2 years.

The common pool Merit List is drawn on the basis of performance in Written Test / Score, GD, PI and Rating of Application (RA). All competing candidates appear in the Merit List in the order of their respective merit. Admission letters are issued in the serial order of the Merit List.

Candidate's preference of a campus as well as programme will be considered, but the allotment will be done at the sole discretion of the Admission Department. Candidates should appear for the selection procedure on the given date. They have to make their own travel and living arrangements during the selection process.
*The present rate of Service Tax (Inclusive of cess) is @12.36%. The Institute reserves the right to collect or reimburse the extra amount of Service Tax from the students in case the Government will increase / decrease the Service Tax rate in future. 2
The following conditions apply to payment of fees and other dues.

The fees and other dues payable at the time of admission would be mentioned in the Admission Letter. iii. The fees are payable as per the schedule given, otherwise late fee will be applicable as follows: Rs.100 for first seven days and thereafter, Rs. 250 per day of delay. Hostel and mess fees are additional. iv. The above fee includes the cost of two NICMAR T-shirts, one tie and one student bag.
FINANCIAL A SSISTANCE The Institute offers Merit Scholarships and NICMAR’s Excalibur Award, which are granted on the basis of academic performance of the candidate in each academic trimester. Companies that accept students for summer training generally offer allowances / stipends during training period. NICMAR’s Merit Scholarship Scheme These rules are framed to institute, operate and disburse scholarships for students of two year full time Post Graduate Programmes offered by NICMAR.

Students are discouraged from any change of programme or cancellation after they have been selected / admitted for a particular programme.
Criteria and Rules for Aw ard of Scholarships
1. Polic y for Change of Programme Students may apply for the change of programme from a full time two year post graduate programme to another full time two year post graduate programme.
i.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the Trimester Performance Index (TPI) of the concerned trimester.
ii.
A common pool of merit list will be prepared based on the TPI, of 10% students of all the two years full time post graduate programme of Pune, Hyderabad, Goa and Indore campuses. As indicated in the given table on the next page, top 03 senior students and top 03 junior students will get scholarship of Rs. 10,000/-, Rs. 9,000/and Rs. 8,000 per month respectively from senior and junior batch students. From the remaining pool of merit list, next 02 students of PGP ACM of senior and 02 students of PGP ACM junior batch will get scholarship of Rs. 7,000/- per month. Next 02 PGP ACM students in the merit list of senior batch and 02 PGP ACM junior students will get scholarship of Rs. 6,000/per month and so on. Similarly a remaining pool of merit list for the PGP PEM, REUIM and IFDM programme students scholarship will be awarded as in Table 1. All the remaining of the 10% students will be awarded scholarship of Rs. 2,750/- per month during that term.
The application of request for transfer is to be made one week before the commencement of classes. Students have to pay Rs. 5000 and Service Tax @12.36%* as transfer processing fee. All transfer request applications would be considered by the Admissions Department for final decision on transfer depending on the actual admissions in the concerned programmes, eligibility criteria and admission cut-off or merit in the concerned programme. Decision taken by the Admissions Department to transfer the candidate or reject the transfer application will be final and binding. Only one transfer request is permissible. 2. Policy for Cancellation of Admission and Refund of Fee The Institute has a policy of considering refund of full first installment of tuition fee paid by the student at the time of acceptance of offer of admission. All such requests must necessarily be received by the Head, Admissions under any circumstances not later than 5.00 p.m. on 06th June, 2014. All such requests in writing must be sent by hand / post / courier only and any request for refund by e-mail / telephone / fax, etc. if n ot accompanied by formal request in writing in hard copy format within the time stipulated above will not be considered.
iii. In case of any tie amongst candidates on same TPI, merit will be determined by Cumulative Performance Index (CPI). In case of tie again in CPI, student securing maximum numbers of grade ‘AA’ followed by maximum number of grade ‘AB’ will be given the preference. After that if once again there is a tie, then the scholarship amoun t will be spilt evenly amongst the concerned candidates. iv. Award of scholarship will be decided after declaration of each Term End Examination results.
No refund of fees will be admissible for any cancellation beyond this time limit. In case, the student applies for the above after 5.00 p.m. on 06th June, 2014, the Institute shall refund the

The awardees of the scholarship may be assigned academic work of such nature and duration as may be decided by the Heads / Deans of the concerned programme, keeping in mind the overall need to keep such assigned work to minimum level possible.
NICMAR’s Excalibur Award A special award has been introduced by the Institute to stimulate excellence and scholarship of the highest order among the student community of NICMAR. The award is titled Excalibur Award. It is awarded to the students securing the highest rank among all students of ACM (Pune, Hyderabad, Goa and Indore campuses), PEM, REUIM and IFDM programmes. The award is presented trimester wise and waives full tuition fee and hostel fee for the trimester in which the student has secured the highest rank.
vi. The decision of the Dean of the concerned School in regard to the forfeiture / suspension of the Award in pursuance of conditions stated in (i) to (iii) above shall be final, subject to the approval of Director General. In case of any grievances, student may apply to the Director General. Such cases will be finalised by the Academic Council. No appeal will be allowed on the decision of the Academic Council.
Merit holders for Aw ard of Scholars hips and Excalibur Award should meet the following conditions. Breach of any one of the conditions shall make them liable to be disqualified for award of schol arship.

The decision of the Scholarship Committee shall be final and binding on all parties concerned, subject to the approval of Director General. v. The Awardees shall maintain high standards in all conduct and behaviour and conform to the discipline of the Institute, as laid down in the Code of Conduct.

Project Management Scholarship:

Objective: To recognise exceptional merit of NICMAR students studying in Full Time Programmes of the Institute, in the area of Project Management. Frequency of Disbursement: Once in every academic year, awarded on commencement of the new academic year. The scholarship is currently available to be awarded for five successive years. Nature: A cash award of Rs. 100,000/- for the top-ranking student (PMI, India, Project Management Extraordinaire Merit Award) and Rs. 25,000/- for the runner up (PMI, India, Project Management Merit Award in Project Management), of PGP ACM / PEM / 4

This campus hostel has capacity of 150+ students which is separate for boys and girls on sharing basis. Single occupancy : Rs. 3,600 / month Shared occupancy : Rs. 3,000 / month Mess charge is Rs. 150/- per day / head.
Eligibility: Awarded to the student, studying in any of NICMAR’s two year Full Time Academic Programmes, securing the highest merit in project management subjects in the first three trimesters, across all campuses of NICMAR.
Payment Schedule:
Description of Award: In recognition of a student’s academic excellence and commendable achievement in securing the highest merit in project management subjects, amongst all students in the Institute.
Hostel and mess fees are payable term-wise within 7 days of the commencement of the term. In case of any delay, a late fine of Rs. 75/- per day will be payable for the first 7 days, after which, fine will be Rs.125/- per day. The hostel and mess fees once paid are non-refundable or non-transferable. Mess facility is mandatory for all students staying in NICMAR Hostels.
HOSTEL AND LIVING EXPENSES Hostel accommodation is available at Pune, Hyderabad, Goa and Indore campuses. Girl students granted admissions are housed separately. All students have to rigorously abide by the Code of Conduct issued by the Institute.
Typically, the total living expenses including hostel, mess and any other expenses at Pune / Hyderabad / Goa / Indore campuses are approx. Rs.10,000/- per month.
Pune Campus
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
This campus has total 4 hostels, which all together provide 904 single occupancy rooms for boys and 194 shared occupancy for girl students. Silver Jubilee Hostel (Boys): Single occupancy

Course Work The list of courses offered term-wise is given in Table 2. Teaching schedule and hours may vary depending upon situation.

Typically, the full course of 7 credits involves 27 hours of teaching in 20 sessions and 90 hours of self-study by a student. The course teacher may give one individual assignment to write (an assignment is approx. 2500 words), one group presentation and one class test.
Millennium Hostel: Single occupancy For girls (if available) : Rs. 5,000 / month For boys : Rs. 3,600 / month Shared occupancy : Rs. 3,000 / month (only for girls students) Mess package charge is Rs. 150 per day / head. Package includes breakfast with tea, buffet lunch, evening snacks with tea and buffet dinner. The Institute mess facilities are run by the contractor hired by NICMAR under the supervision of the Manager, Premises and Services (P&S). The manager, according to the suggestion of Students’ Co-ordinator, prepares menu on weekly basis. •

Comput er Practic e Works hop (CPW) Computer Practice Workshop integrates information technology and software applications relevant to various business functions such as project management, estimation, contract management, risk management, statistical analysis, ERP and basic computer skills taught in class. The software include the software applications that are used in construction business worldwide. They are MSP and P6 for project planning, scheduling, monitoring and control. CANDY and Excel for estimating, planning and project valuation, Microsoft Dynamics for ERP solution, SPSS and Stat Tool for statistical data analysis, @Risk for risk management, Tally for accounting. The students are trained on these packages during various trimesters with hands on practice on computers. Skilful and creative application of tools of information technology in individual’s profession is the trademark of a NICMAR graduate.
Hyderabad Campus At Hyderabad campus, NICMAR CISC has established a relation with NAC to provide hostel facility for our students. NAC hostel consists of 44 rooms (Twin sharing basis) in boys’ hostel and 22 rooms (Twin sharing basis) in girls’ hostel. Due to limited availability of hostel rooms, accommodation will be provided based on merit list. The present hostel fee is Rs. 9075/- per quarterly and monthly mess charges are Rs. 3900/- per month approximately. The rates may vary according to NICMAR / NAC norms from time to time.
iii . Managerial Skill s Work shop (MSW) Managerial Skills Workshops are an important part of the curriculum. These workshops equip the students with the managerial communication, presentation, team management, career management and other soft skills. They give hands-on-experience in the following skills: Managerial Communication and People Skills. Listening Skills, Business Presentations, Verbal, Non-verbal and Written Communication. Cross-Cultural Communication and Communication at Work.
Goa Campus This campus hostel has capacity for 200 students in old building and 70 students in new building on sharing basis. A student is expected to select a topic for project work on a live problem in the industry or a macro-issue having a bearing on performance of the construction industry. The topic should be researchable in the given time and should be approved by the Institute. It should involve scientific design of a study, collection and analysis of data and preparing a project report in an acceptable academic style.
Interview Skills, Group Discussion and Career Development Skills. Team Management, Negotiation, Problem Solving, and other soft skills.
Group assignments, audio-visual presentations, role-plays, group discussions, Language Lab sessions and case studies are some of the indicators of the pedagogy of Managerial Skills Workshops. Students are given training in Business English through Orell Digital Language Lab which is an interactive language learning software. It assists students in learning communication with the help of some advanced tools and enables them to communicate confidently in their respective professions.
The student will be allotted a guide by the Institute. If the student elects to have a guide from outside, the Institute will nominate one of the faculty members as a co-guide. Students are permitted to take up group projects wherever found suitable and approved by the Institute. These are evaluated by external examiners, wherever possible.
iv. Basic Competency Workshop
viii. Summer Training
This workshop aims at updating the basic engineering / architectural subject already undergone by students at under graduate level. It is a refresher course taken through two trimesters, where students are required to do self study and undergo objective test on selective subjects every trimester. Discussions are held to clear the doubts. Emphasis on the requirements of understanding the subject and their applicability is also given during the discussions. The students are also asked to give a technical presentation on topic of their choice.
As part of the curriculum each student has to undergo supervised field training with a reputed construction firm for 8 to 10 weeks. During this period they can do their project work for which they have to select a live problem of the concerned company / industry and get it approved from the Institute. Therefore, the summer work will make students’ research an applied research in the area of construction management. Agencies for practical training are carefully selected. The host agency is expected to nominate a senior officer to supervise the student’s work, be willing to pay a stipend to the student and hopefully may offer employment to the student trained by it. What the Institute looks for is meaningful and supervised work experience for the student. Sponsored students may be allowed to do training in their own organisations. Students are expected to arrange their summer training on their own.
v. Construction Practice Workshop The objective of Construction Practice Workshop is to give hands-on experience in the practice of building trades, operation of construction machinery and doing construction. The students spend 20 sessions at workshops. They may work as masons, plumbers and carpenters; handle vibrators, operate dozers, dumpers etc. In addition the Institute organises site visits to various project construction and infrastructure development sites of professional interest of a selected centre. Attendance on these tours / visits is compulsory. The students are encouraged to take initiative in organising these tours. Students must equip themselves with safety helmets and boots at their own cost. The practice is supervised by experienced trainers on the sites. Construction Practice Workshops are credit courses. Students pay for the site visits of Construction Practice Workshop.
REGULAR TEACHING FACULTY
Students are required to undergo training in First-aid and gain a certificate from the competent authority. They are expected to have driving skills.

Contracting
The objective of the workshop is to make the students undertake measurement, costing and estimating, prepare bill of quantities, tender documents and do quality inspections and learn the application of various standards to construction processes. The students may be made to role-play as contactors, clients and consultants and understand the intricate details of preparation of tenders and managing of contracts.
PEDAGOGY NICMAR believes that the method of instruction for maximising learning would vary from course to course, and therefore, uses a host of pedagogic approaches in different courses such as case studies, lectures, group and individual exercises, class projects and simulation of business environment. The Concurrent Internal Assessment is done on a continuous basis by the teacher of the course concerned. The internal assessment can be based on one or a combination of the following: (a) a mid-term examination, (b) an essay type assignment on a topic assigned by the course teacher, (c) the student’s overall performance in the class, and (d) a presentation in the class on a selected and relevant topic.
The NICMAR learning system de-emphasises lecturing and examination system by balancing classroom learning and practical work in overall assessment. Coursework comprises 80.60% of total inputs while the practice workshops, summer training and the project work cover the rest. Overall, assessment by examinations has 56.41% weightage and the rest of 43.59% is through concurrent internal or joint assessment.

Students’ Project Works are subject to Joint Assessment by the Project Guide and an External Expert appointed for the purpose. The assessment may constitute a Viva Voce. A panel of experts is especially constituted for the purpose.

The internship is also assessed jointly by the company supervisor of the student and a faculty member, both nominated during the summer training. v. Failure Cases NICMAR’s Post Graduate Programmes are high profile programmes to which students of a high calibre are admitted through a process of rigorous evaluation of their competence. It is, therefore, expected that no student will fail in any subject or will delay submission of project work without valid reasons.
Thirty percent of the course work and all practice workshops are subject to Concurrent Internal Assessment (CIA). Examinations are held for 70% of course work.
However, if any student fails to obtain minimum passing marks in any subject, his / her overall result will be withheld. Such a student will have to take examination by paying re-exam fees of Rs. 2000/- per subject along with the next trimester and obtain the minimum passing marks, so as to enable him / her to qualify in the course.

Similarly, non-submission of project work on time is viewed with displeasure. A candidate is not considered to have completed the programme unless he / she submits the project work, is adjudged as satisfactory, and given the ratings by the Examiner/s appointed for the purpose. If the students wish to get their examination paper/s re-evaluated then this can be done on payment of re-evaluation fees of Rs. 1000 per paper. vi. Grading System

Evaluation will be on a trimester basis. At the end of every trimester, a Trimester Performance Index (TPI) and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) will be calculated. Student should clear all subjects for passing the programme.

NICMAR’s Construction Industry Staff College (CISC) is situated near the Hitech-city in Madhapur and is 15 kilometres away from the Secunderabad railway station. The Government of Andhra Pradesh has donated the land and the premises has been under the control of National Academy of Construction (NAC). NAC complex has been built on approx. 167 acre land. At present the surroundings are picturesque with a view of lakes, hills, woods, open spaces and clean crisp air. The premises currently used by NICMAR Construction Industry Staff College, comprises of Administration block, LT block and PG block including 10 classrooms, a VC hall and two computer centres. An upgraded new library, students convenience centre are also established in the PG block.

NICMAR Goa Campus was established in Goa in association with Mushtifund Saunstha in October 2007 and it is located in picturesque city of Farmagudi (Ponda). It can accommodate 200 students in old building and 70 students in new building on sharing basis. NICMAR Pune Campus is situated at Balewadi, 14 kilometres away from the Pune Central Railway Station and 7 kilometres from Pune University and the Mumbai - Bangalore expressway runs along the Institute. It has over 3,77,676 square feet built up area on 11 acre plot of land built using the latest materials and technologies and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities blending harmoniously with the landscaped greenery all around.
NICMAR Indore Campus has been established in association with Altius Institute of Universal Studies in a prime locality situated on the Indore bypass on the Agra-Mumbai highway. A well appointed, spacious campus, measuring over 50,000 sq. ft., of built up area, houses large classrooms, seminar rooms, library, computer labs, faculty rooms, offices and canteen facilities.
