1. Introducción Entre los acontecimientos más importantes y decisivos del s. XX se encuentra el surgimiento del Nacionalsocialismo de Alemania, que hace referencia al movimiento nazista o nazismo, conocido como el hecho más cruel de la historia de Europa. Esta doctrina política, social y racial surge en Alemania en los años 20, pero alcanza mayor importancia en los años 30, momento en que las duras condiciones de paz impuestas en el Tratado de Versalles (1919) se juntan con la grave crisis mundial del Jueves Negro en 1929. Este nuevo movimiento le arrebata al comunismo las masas obreras alemanas, une a todas las clases sociales y les da el impulso necesario para salir de esta terrible crisis, retrasando de esta forma el triunfo de la Revolución Mundial Marxista. Nace, en suma, el estado totalitario, en el que el Partido nazi maneja todos los hilos de la nación. Los nacionalsocialistas creen principalmente en la determinación biológica como factor decisivo en la definición de las labores que ha de ejecutar un individuo. Identifican al hombre ario con el concepto de hombre creador, viril y guerrero. A partir de allí, le reconocen todos los triunfos de la especie humana. Sin embargo, también creen en la ciclidad de la historia y sostienen que las civilizaciones creadas por los arios decaían y morían una vez sus elementos representativos se mezclaban racialmente con miembros de otras razas. El nacionalsocialismo identifica en la comunidad judía la antítesis del hombre y advierte que muchos de los principales lideres comunistas son judíos. De allí derivan teorías acerca de la existencia de una conspiración judía para hacerse con el control mundial. Todas estas creencias se manifiestan claramente en las afirmaciones de Adolf Hitler, el representante más conocido del nacionalsocialismo en la historia mundial y denominado por si mismo y por sus partidarios “el Führer”: “La doctrina judía del marxismo rechaza el principio aristocrático de la Naturaleza y reemplaza el privilegio eterno del poder y la fuerza por la masa de los números y su peso muerto. Así niega el valor de la personalidad en el hombre, cuestiona el significado de la nacionalidad y la raza y por tanto aparta de la humanidad la premisa de su existencia y su cultura. Como fundamento del universo, esta doctrina conduciría al final de cualquier orden intelectualmente concebible para el hombre. Y como el resultado de la aplicación, en el mayor de los organismos conocidos, de tal ley solo podía ser el caos, en la tierra solo podría haber destrucción para los habitantes de este planeta. Si [....] el judío vence a los otros pueblos del mundo, su corona será la corona de muerto de la humanidad y este planeta se desplazará por el éter vació de hombres, como lo hizo hace miles de

años 1”. La teoría nazi sostenía que entre el Führer y su pueblo existía una armonía mística, una absoluta comunión, pero, en realidad, la aprobación y la adhesión de la sociedad alemana quedaban por lograr. Por ello, se recurrió a los grandes actos públicos, manifestaciones y desfiles nazis, que escenificaban la grandeza de Hitler y la disciplina impecable de su ejercito; se difundieron políticas de bienestar y se recurrió a los medios de comunicación masiva. Los periódicos y los libros fueron sometidos a una estricta censura y se llevaron a cabo grandes quemas de libros considerados perniciosos. El cine no solo sufrió la censura, sino también la manipulación. Todas las películas debían contener algún mensaje pronazi. Incluso el propio estado se ocupó de producir películas documentales de propaganda, utilizando todas los adelantos de técnica y arte. La radio también se convirtió en un medio muy importante para el régimen, ya que permitía a al voz del Führer entrar en los hogares alemanes. La propaganda no buscaba solo fortalecer la fidelidad al régimen o el odio hacia los judíos, sino difundir formas culturales consideradas propias o saludables para la nación e identificadas con la raza aria. El lema de la política interior del Tercer Reich era “Alemania para los alemanes y gobernada para los alemanes”. Esto, pone de manifiesto que Alemania querría ser las dueña de su propia casa y vivir en ella de acuerdo con su gusto y mentalidad, excluyendo de la vida pública a todos los elementos extraños. Asimismo, los nazis instauraron el control reproductivo de la sociedad alemana, pensando que la necesidad de crear nuevos arios es imperiosa. Por ello, se buscó la fecundación de todas las alemanas de buena sangre por parte de la élite aria para que poco a poco la raza perdida recupere su esplendor. El resultado de esto fue el establecimiento de los campos llamados Lebensborn en los cuales las mujeres de origen ario eran inseminadas con padres seleccionados para la creación de niños racialmente puros. Esto indica que el objetivo de Adolf Hitler era muy claro: “Debemos luchar para salvaguardar la existencia y la reproducción de nuestra raza y de nuestro pueblo, el mantenimiento de nuestros hijos y la pureza de nuestra sangre, la libertad y la independencia de la patria, de manera que nuestro pueblo pueda madurar para el cumplimiento de la misión otorgada por el Creador del universo 2”. Según Adolf Hitler, los comunistas eran enemigos de la nación alemana, pero había un enemigo aún mas peligroso: los judíos, a los que consideraba como “algo hostil al germanismo” y como “verdaderos diablos” con “el cerebro de un monstruo y no de un hombre”. proletariados agitadores, los financistas avaros y los grandes industriales que exprimían al pueblo alemán; eran la prensa que difamaba a la nación y también los débiles y corruptos parlamentarios cómplices de las humillantes tratados de paz. Eran, en síntesis, el enemigo racial que desde el interior corrompía y contaminaba a la nación, debilitandola. Teniendo en cuenta y analizando en profundidad los objetivos y las ideas de Hitler, su lema “Alemania para los alemanes y gobernada para los alemanes” y su afirmación: “Lo que la Nación alemana anheló en vano durante siglos enteros al fin se ha hecho realidad: un pueblo uno, de hermanos, libre de los recíprocos prejuicios y entorpecedores de los tiempos pasados" , cabe plantearse las siguientes preguntas: ¿Realmente la ideología nazista del hombre más cruel de la historia alemana, y probablemente de toda Europa, se interesaba por el bien de los alemanes?, ¿Cómo el propio pueblo alemán había vivido su inhumana política?, ¿Realmente la nación entera se mantenía unida en sus creencias, opiniones y mentalidades?, ¿Acaso no eran los propios alemanes las victimas más perjudicadas y desfavorecidas por una absurda, o tal vez, inadecuadamente llevada, ideología? Todas estas preguntas y las otras que seguramente más de uno se plantea o se planteará al conocer este acontecimiento histórico más vergonzoso de la historia alemana, probablemente no deberían ser respondidas por nosotros. Asimismo, el objetivo de este trabajo no es precisamente dar respuestas a estas preguntas, sino averiguar qué repercusión tuvo el nacionalsocialismo en la conciencia de la sociedad que vivió enmarcada por él y qué cambios provocó en la mentalidad de los alemanes.
2. El estado y los ciudadanos: Los nazis explotaron el deseo de “comunidad del pueblo”, elaboraron su propia síntesis de promesas socialistas y procedimientos de corte capitalista, y debilitaron las inquietudes anticapitalistas con una dieta de pretendidos cambios sociales. La táctica del régimen de efectuar cambios sociales de carácter puramente simbólico estaba de acuerdo con los deseos y aspiraciones profundas de muchos alemanes. No solamente el amplio sector pequeñoburgués de las masas anticapitalistas sino también muchos obreros identificaban las alteraciones radicales de la estructura social con un descenso general de su situación y preferían a eso una mejora de sus particulares condiciones de vida. «No había grupo importante de la sociedad alemana que no pudiera identificarse con el Führer en alguna manera. Los campesinos le veían en su calidad de miembro de una familia campesina, los trabajadores le veían como un miembro de su clase, un hombre de

manos encallecidas capacitado como nadie para comprender sus problemas; los soldados le veían como un militar sin clase, mitad cabo y mitad comandante en jefe, y los profesionales como una autodidactica que, pasando por encima de la rutina académica, se había graduado summa cum laude en la escuela de la vida»3. Hitler conservó intacta la mayor parte de la vieja estructura: el sistema de tribunales y oficiales de justicia que había heredado de la odiada República. Pero cambió su espiritu al cambiar la teoría de la ley. La gente conservaba el sistema legal “externo” al que estaba acostumbrada, pero en realidad, vivía bajo un sistema legal que era un instrumento de poder en manos de la jefatura nazi. Con todas estas aspiraciones y una conducta especialmente afectiva hacia los ciudadanos, nunca hasta ahora expresada por ningún jefe de estado alemán, Adolf Hitler se iba ganando la aprobación y la simpatía del pueblo alemán y estaba consiguiendo inculcar en la mentalidad de la sociedad alemana, que la unidad e igualdad son aspectos fundamentales para la existencia y la inmortalidad de una nación. La redefinición nazi de la política como un «modo total de vida» significaba también una redefinición del Estado y de la condición del ciudadano. 4 Según la ideología nacionalsocialista, el Estado era meramente un agente de la raza, por lo que ésta determinaría las acciones del Estado. La ley tenía solamente un propósito: soldar la comunidad del pueblo como una nación. Era el jefe quien, en su persona, unía Estado y Nación; la encarnación viva de la ideología, y, a través del Estado, el ejecutor de las acciones necesarias para salvaguardar el propósito intimo de la raza. El jefe era, pues, a la vez legislador y juez. Como todos los campos de la cultura, la ley y la justicia, el estado y la ciudadanía, estaban sometidos a un cuerpo de pensamiento que deseaba una unidad total. El poder dimanba del pueblo y el Partido nazi era el pueblo unido en un solo propósito y en una sola concepción del mundo. El acento se ponía en la inmediatez del poder, en contraste, con una ley normativa o imparcial, era una parte de la política, de las acciones del jefe y pueblo unidos en la voluntad de la raza para realizar sus fines. El nacionalsocialismo ha puesto al pueblo directamente en el centro del pensamiento, la fe y la voluntad de creatividad y vida. «El punto de partida de la doctrina nacionalsocialista no está en el Estado, sino en la Nación. Es decir, para poder poner a prueba, juzgar y corregir la nulidad y, por tanto, la adecuación de las formas nacionales externas, es necesario captar su finalidad por encima y mas allá de su conveniencia como medios. Así pues, el punto focal de todo el pensamiento nacionalsocialista radica en la substancia viva que nosotros, de acuerdo con su desarrollo histórico, llamamos la

Nación Alemana»5. La comunidad del pueblo, apoyada en una comunidad de voluntad y en una consciencia de comunidad de honor del pueblo alemán racialmente homogéneo, constituyó una unidad política. Esa comunidad no era solamente espiritual, sino también real. El vínculo real era la sangre común. Esta comunidad de sangre creó la unidad político- nacional del empuje de la voluntad contra el mundo circundante. La comunidad político- nacional era la clave de arco de toda la vida gubernamental y nacional. El concepto de Estado del nacionalsocialismo era la idea de la comunidad político- nacional. El Estado era el medio para el fin de salvaguardar al pueblo. «Su fin es la preservación y la promoción de una comunidad de seres vivientes que son física y psicológicamente semejantes. Esa preservación se dirige ante todo y sobre todo a la estirpe racial, y permite por ello el libre desarrollo de todas las energías latentes en la raza»6. El nazismo afirmaba que no son los seres humanos individuales, sino las razas, pueblos y naciones, los que constituyen los elementos del orden de este mundo. El individuo está radicado en su Nación como un destino. La comunidad de la Nación es el valor primordial de la vida del todo, así como de la del individuo. El ser humano individual solamente puede ser concebido como un mimbro de una comunidad de personas a las que es racialmente similar, y de las que hereda sus dotes físicas y espirituales. El nacionalsocialismo no reconocía una esfera individual separada que, aparte de la comunidad, haya de ser cuidadosamente protegida de toda interferencia por parte del Estado. La personalidad moral solamente puede probarse a si misma en el seno de la comunidad. Ninguna actividad de la vida diaria tiene significado ni valor a no ser como un servicio al todo. Así, no es posible que la vida del individuo se desarrolle plenamente si no es al servicio de la comunidad nacional. Así pues, en el orden legal, la posición del individuo no está ya determinada en términos de la persona como tal, sino en términos de la comunidad. El individuo es valorado como la unidad más pequeña de la nación, y como una parte del todo; es protegido por la ley, en interés del todo. El individuo ha nacido como un miembro de su Nacionalidad. Esa condición de miembro produce para él derechos y deberes con la Nación como un todo, y con todos sus demás miembros. De ahí que los derechos y deberes del individuo dimanan directamente de su propio rango y posición en la comunidad. El régimen nazi distinguía entre la ciudadanía del Reich y la ciudadanía del Estado. Los ciudadanos del Estado son personas que están bajo la protección del Reich alemán, y que, en consecuencia, están obligadas a éste. Un ciudadano del Reich es, en cambio, un súbdito de sangre alemana, que, por su actitud, prueba que quiere y puede servir lealmente al pueblo alemán y al

Reich. La estructura de la vida y el orden nacional, y del Estado bajo un jefe, basado en aquella, requiere que los súbditos del Estado sean distinguidos de los extranjeros y de las personas sin Estado, y que el derecho político, interior al Reich, de la ciudadanía sea establecido como una cualificación para el ejercicio de deberes y derechos civiles. Lo que es alemán, y lo que beneficia o daña al pueblo alemán y al Reich, solamente puede ser sentido, conocido y determinado por personas de sangre alemana. «La ciudadanía del Reich, la totalidad de los ciudadanos del Reich, es el pueblo en su configuración política. La adquisición de la ciudadanía pone al camarada racial perteneciente al Estado en plena posesión de los derechos y deberes que derivan de su condición de miembro de la Nación»7. Esta distinción entre ciudadanos del Reich y ciudadanos del Estado daba a la jefatura el poder sobre aquellas personas que vivían en Alemania, pero sin ser admitidas a la plena ciudadanía. Además, al hacer de la ciudadanía del Reich un honor que había que ganarse, la jefatura obtenía un método más con el que recompensar o castigar, y fortalecería así su influencia sobre la población. En la práctica, la ciudadanía del Estado tendía a ser una cuestión de edad. Una vez alcanzada la mayoría de edad, todos los arios se conviertían en ciudadanos del Reich, a menos que hubiesen cometido un crimen político o una felonía. «La Ley de Ciudadanía del Reich asigna al ciudadano alemán de sangre allegada su lugar adecuado como miembro pleno de la comunidad nacional. Esa condición de miembro pleno produce plenos derechos y deberes políticos»8. En esta ley el nacionalsocialismo sentó la doctrina de la igualdad del hombre y de la libertad fundamentalmente limitada del individuo del Estado, sobre el fondo del hecho, duro pero inesquivable, de la desigualdad natural y las diferentes naturalezas de los hombres. Según la Ley de Ciudadanía del Reich, «solamente aquél que es un camarada racial puede ser un ciudadano. Solamente el que es de sangre alemana, no importa cual sea su fe religiosa, es un camarada racial. En consecuencia, ningún judío puede ser un camarada racial. El que no sea un ciudadano, solamente puede vivir en Alemania como un huésped, y está sometido a la legislación especial para extranjeros. El derecho a determinar la jefatura y la legislación del Estado solamente puede ser concedido a ciudadanos. Exigimos, pues, que todo cargo público, independientemente de cual sea su importancia, y tanto en el Reich como en los estados particulares, o en los municipios, sea ocupado solamente por ciudadanos»9. Esta ley actualizó la ordenación nacional del pueblo alemán a nivel político y llegó a ser el fundamento que salvaguardaba y soportaba todo el orden político y nacional del Tercer Reich.

2. 1. Los ciudadanos alemanes “corrientes”: Los alemanes, en su mayor parte, no eran nazis, ni judíos, ni comunistas clandestinos, ni testigos de Jahova. La mayoría dormía por la noche, trabajaba productivamente durante el día y disfrutaba de la vida en los tiempos de paz del gobierno nacionalsocialista. Todos sabían que los judíos, los comunistas, los socialistas y algunos religiosos contrarios al régimen sufrían persecuciones. Sabían que había una fuerte presencia policial, un exceso de leyes que limitaba la libertad personal y un peligro potencial para quienes se negaban a cumplir los deseos de Hitler. Muchos se quejaban en privado, pero la mayoría era conformista. Muchos, probablemente la mayoría, creían que la policía y las leyes estaban ahí para protegerles. El terror nazi no suponía una amenaza real para la mayor parte de los alemanes corrientes, pero la mayoría de los alemanes obedecían a las directivas oficiales por temor a las represalias. Las investigaciones, desarrolladas en las ultimas dos décadas desde la perspectiva de la vida cotidiana sostienen que si bien es cierto que la resistencia y las protestas no eran actividades comunes, la sociedad nazi estaba teñida en descontento, resentimiento y oposición. «Muchas mujeres detestaban el papel servil que les correspondía en una sociedad opresiva y dominada por los hombres, y expresaban su disconformidad a través de atuendos, actitudes y comentarios que ponían en peligro los fundamentos morales de la sociedad. Numerosos hombres y mujeres de todas las clases sociales contaban chistes antinazis, difundían rumores maliciosos, se aferraban obstinadamente a su identidad religiosa, socorrían a las victimas y a los adversarios del régimen, desempeñaban su trabajo sin entusiasmo y hacían lo que podían – sin llegar a la resistencia armada- para socavar la autoridad del régimen» 10. La confianza en el nacionalsocialismo varía considerablemente según el grado de formación académica, el sexo, la edad y las creencias religiosas. Los nazis encontraron más apoyo en las clases medias que en las clases obreras , pero contaban con simpatizantes en todo el espectro de clases sociales de Alemania. El nazismo tuvo también más seguidores entre los hombres y entre la juventud, que había dado a Hitler un reducido apoyo electoral. La gran mayoría de alemanes acató voluntariamente la ideología y la política nazis, y sufrió un poco o nada las consecuencias de sus ocasionales indiscreciones, normalmente inocuas. Muchos almenes corrientes tomaron parte en actos ilegales de naturaleza política durante el Tercer Reich. Muchos no sólo decía que había creído en el nacionalsocialismo, sino que además no consideraba que tuvieran mucha importancia sus actos menores de incumplimiento, y la mayoría afirmaba que nunca temió ser detenido por su conducta durante el periodo nazi. años del Tercer Reich de un modo totalmente distinto que los enemigos señalados del régimen. En resumen, se puede afirmar que los alemanes estuvieron mayoritariamente de acuerdo con todas las iniciativas y normativas nazis, pero no se puede negar que la mayoría de los alemanes tuviesen motivos para temer el terror nazi. Sin embargo, la población corriente alemana apoyaba por lo general al régimen, no consideraba a la Gestapo tan todopoderosa ni amenazadora y disfrutaba de un espacio considerable para expresar la frustración y la desaprobación debidas a pequeños desacuerdos con el estado nazi y con sus lideres. 2. 2. La Gestapo: La policía secreta del Estado, la Gestapo, fue creada en 1933 y formada por oficiales de policía de carrera y profesionales del Derecho. Su función era la de investigar y combatir todas las tendencias peligrosas para el Estado, teniendo la autoridad para investigar los casos de traición, espionaje y sabotaje, además de los casos de ataques criminales al Partido Nazi y al Estado. Los hombres de la Gestapo nunca se arrepintieron de sus acciones durante el régimen nazi. Después de la guerra algunos se ocultaron bajo una identidad falsa, pero la mayor parte permaneció en el lugar de origen. Muy pocos reconocieron su culpabilidad y muchos creían que no eran en absoluto culpables, afirmando que ellos mismos eran victimas del régimen o que sólo cumplían con sus obligaciones y su trabajo. Los comandantes de la Gestapo eran jóvenes de clase media, de alta formación académica, recientemente convertidos al movimiento nacionalsocialista. Muchos eran individuos atemorizados con personalidad insegura. El nazismo confirió a estos hombres una profesión y una identidad, aunque fuesen falsas e imperfectas. Confiaban en su propio entusiasmo dentro del movimiento, se adhirieron a la SA, la SS y el Partido Nazi en cuanto pudieron, y pronto fueron alcanzando puestos más altos en la estructura jerárquica. Determinaban que casos debían ser investigados y que oficiales de la Gestapo se debían encargar de cada investigación. Y aunque raras veces se implicaban físicamente en las operaciones policiales de captura, malos tratos e interrogatorios individuales, intervenían si lo consideraban necesario para guiar el proceso de las investigaciones. Tenían también la responsabilidad de revisar los informes sobre la evolución de los presos en los campos de concentración y podían ordenar que permaneciesen allí durante periodos de tiempo prologados, aunque las autoridades de los propios campos recomendasen lo contrario. Sin duda, no eran “hombres corrientes”, eran nazis entusiastas que desempeñaron un papel activo en la persecución y asesinato. Según algunos estudiosos, «los comandantes eran una nueva variante del tipo de personalidad autoritaria que, corrompido por una objetividad fría y una distancia emocional,

y obsesionado con los objetivos del estado, dirigió las operaciones de la policía de seguridad sin pensar demasiado en ellas»11. «Los oficiales de la Gestapo eran “hombres corrientes”, cuya naturaleza y trayectoria no se diferenciaba en nada de las de otros oficiales de policía alemanes» 12. Muchos ocultaban datos importantes de su formación académica, sus orígenes sociales o su familia. Se parecían bastante a los alemanes típicos que se podía encontrar en cualquier lugar del país durante el nacionalsocialismo. Eran policías con una larga experiencia profesional, que habían entrado en el cuerpo de policía ya en la República de Weimer, es probable que sintiesen cierta atracción hacia la violencia, pero creían en la ley y el orden. El problema era que deseaban cumplir y hacer cumplir cualquier ley y cualquier orden que les fueran impuestos, independientemente del grado de criminalidad que conllevasen. Eran también bastante oportunistas en cuanto a su carrera profesional, pues querían ser oficiales de la Gestapo y aceptar cualquier tarea que se les asignase con el fin de lograr el éxito y el ascenso. Les gustaba ejercer el poder sobre los demás y se beneficiaban de la promoción y el prestigio que les confería la Gestapo. «Algunos estudiosos han sostenido que los oficiales de la Gestapo eran meros hombres “corrientes” inmersos en una situación anormal, que actuaron como lo habría hecho cualquier otro individuo normal en las mismas condiciones y bajo las mismas presiones que ellos soportaron. Así pues, se considera que los oficiales eran alemanes normales con una orientación política derechista que cumplieron los ordenes que recibían porque entendían a la Gestapo como un medio para ascender en sus carreras profesionales»13. La Gestapo no era omnisciente, todopoderosa ni omnipresente y tenia recursos limitados y un numero reducido de agentes y espías para conocer las actividades y las opiniones de los ciudadanos normales, dado que los ciudadanos medios se prestaban frecuentemente a vigilar y denunciar a los ciudadanos que se desviaban de la linea establecida. Una reyerta vecinal, una discusión de pareja, los celos de un colega o un conflicto generacional podían ser la causa inmediata de una carta anónima o una acusación formal que ponían en guardia a la Gestapo y llevaban a la ruina a los individuos denunciados. Los ciudadanos individuales influyeron mucho en el éxito del control social de los nazis, pero la Gestapo era el instrumento principal del control nazi, y la culpabilidad de los oficiales de dicha organización no es equiparable a la de los ciudadanos medios. «Al final de la guerra muchos hombres de la Gestapo sostuvieron ante todo el mundo que habían

sido policías normales obligados “contra su voluntad” a integrarse en la Gestapo y a permanecer en ella por miedo a ser enviados a un campo de concentración. Además, afirmaban que en su interior eran “enemigos secretos” del nacionalsocialismo e hicieron todo lo que estuvo en su mano, en casi todas las situaciones, para ayudar a las victimas del régimen» 14.
3. La educación y la juventud El movimiento nacionalsocialista, cuyo propósito era abrazar a la totalidad del pueblo para establecer un Reich, no podía por menos de arrastrar consigo a la juventud. Por ser jóvenes, representaban el futuro del estado nazi: “Quien tiene la juventud, tiene el futuro”. El régimen nazi canceló inmediatamente la lucha generacional y consiguió que su manipulación de los jóvenes sirviese a dos fines: liberar todo el potencial de la agresividad juvenil y, al mismo tiempo, impresionar al público adulto por el grado de disciplina a que podían someter a los jóvenes. La liberación nazi de la juventud tomo varias formas: colocar a las Juventudes Hitlerianas junto a la familia y la escuela como tribunal de apelación rival, entregar uniformes a todos los muchachos, hacer que los hijos guiasen a los padres inadaptados hacia la nueva época y suscitar esperanzas de una herencia que no había sido prometida a ninguna otra generación. Según el régimen nazi, hay tres fuerzas, que en combinación, determinan el correcto desarrollo de la juventud: el hogar familiar, la escuela y la Juventud Hitleriana. La Juventud Hitleriana era un componente corporativo del Partido Nacionalsocialista Alemán. Su tarea primordial era implantar el concepto de camaradería nacional en el corazón de la juventud alemana y procurar que los nuevos miembros del movimiento nacionalsocialista se desarrollen con el mismo espíritu que ha dado grandeza al partido. La Juventud Hitleriana no conocía superiores, solamente jefes. El jefe no era un individuo particular al que simplemente le tocaba dirigir una organización juvenil dentro de un determinado horario. Lo suyo era más que una ocupación: era una vocación. No podía dejar su tarea al caer la tarde, como un trabajador de oficina, porque él mismo era parte de su tarea. Estaba comprometido hasta mucho más allá que el horario de trabajo. El jefe de la Juventud Hitleriana debía ser un ejemplo para sus seguidores: tenía que llevar una vida nacionalsocialista. No necesitaba ser físicamente más fuerte que los jóvenes a los que mandaba, pero había de ser el más fuerte de su unidad en términos de valores espirituales y de carácter. un trono, sino que tenían que ser camaradas entre camaradas. Sus seguidores debían tenerle en cuenta no porque su autoridad venía de arriba, sino porque estaba basada en una serena superioridad que derivaba de su autodisciplina. El jefe de la Juventud Hitleriana era único, su mando no era compartido y disfrutaba de una autoridad absoluta. Eso significa que tenía el derecho ilimitado de mandar, porque tenía también una ilimitada responsabilidad. Sabía que la responsabilidad mayor tenía precedencia sobre la menor. Así pues, se sometía calladamente a las ordenes de sus jefes, aunque iban dirigidas contra el mismo. Para él, como para toda la joven Alemania, la historia de la Juventud Hitleriana es una prueba de que ni siquiera una camaradería de jóvenes puede tener éxito a menos que reconozca incondicionalmente la autoridad del mando. El éxito del nacionalsocialismo era el éxito de la disciplina. El edificio de la Juventud Nacionalsocialista estaba igualmente levantado sobre cimientos de disciplina y obediencia. El joven Jungvolk 15, que a la edad de diez años entraba en el movimiento de Adolf Hitler, aprendía pronto a subordinar su propia pequeña voluntad a las leyes que han construido los estados y que han hecho felices a todas las naciones, y cuya violación tenía por resultado la perdida de la libertad y el colapso de la Nación. A medida que se hacía mayor, aprendía que la disciplina y la subordinación no eran inventos arbitrarios creados por unos pocos hombres sedientes de poder para salvaguardar su propia posición personal, sino que eran las premisas para su propia existencia y la de la nación. En esta organización el joven adquería conocimientos que le servirán sobre todo como un marco para la vida adulta. Y, como se le instruía en la disciplina de una forma que estaba en consonancia con sus facultades mentales, empezaba a entender que su obediencia ciega proporcionaba la posibilidad de éxito a la voluntad del grupo. Así, lo que era aprendido en los años mozos en el combate con pequeñas tareas, beneficiará más tarde al Estado en el cumplimiento de sus más importantes tareas. El miembro de Juventud Hitleriana era consciente no solamente de la gran influencia de la educación, sino, de manera especial, de la experiencia practica de la vida. «La juventud alemana recorre su país para conocer su patria, y, sobre todo, para conocer a camaradas de otras partes del Reich. Todo el que ha tenido la experiencia de la Comunidad Nacional Alemana, y ha aprendido a apreciar a su Patria de ese modo, en términos nacionalsocialistas, será capaz, si ello se le pide, de defender al Estado con su vida»16. La Juventud Hitleriana familiarizó a los niños con armas y les

inculcó que “el que no arriesga la vida para ganarla constantemente de nuevo, está ya muerto, aunque todavía respire, coma y beba. La muerte no es más que una partida hacia una vida más elevada 17”. Esta organización, con el enorme apoyo que le ofrecía el estado y con su lema “La juventud guía a la juventud”, mostró ser capaz de generar una gran carga de energía y de despertar la capacidad de sacrificio de millones de jóvenes. «Al margen de que el ingreso en las Juventudes Hitlerianas fuese obligatorio, es cierto que la organización tenía innegables atractivos para gran numero de niños y adolescentes alemanes. Muchos jóvenes disfrutaban de los periodos vacacionales y excursiones que organizaban las Juventudes, así como de las actividades deportivas y de ocio que patrocinaban. Además, muchos jóvenes se sentían orgullosos del poder y el estatus que les confería el uniforme y aprovechaban la ocasión para iniciar, a veces agresivamente, un conflicto con las tradicionales figuras de autoridad: el profesor, el padre, el capataz, el párroco local» 18. A pesar de las múltiples ventajas que ofrecía la afiliación a esta organización muchos miembros detestaban la instrucción, el regimiento, el adoctrinamiento político, la uniformidad obligatoria y la falta de libertad y medios individuales de expresión que implicaba el ingreso en las Juventudes Hitlerianas. Justo en el momento de la vida de los jóvenes en que más querían romper con los preceptos de la generación de sus padres y experimentar nuevas vivencias sociales y sexuales, las Juventudes Hitlerianas exigían la conformidad y reprimían los deseos naturales juveniles. Fumar, beber, celebrar fiestas y practicar el sexo eran actividades muy mal consideradas o incluso castigadas. Se prohibía a los jóvenes menores de 18 años circular por las calles de noche, así como frecuentar bares, restaurantes, cines u otros lugares de entretenimiento después de las nueve de la noche, si no era en compañía de un adulto. Además, se prohibía también que los jóvenes menores de 16 años fumasen o bebiesen alcohol en lugares públicos. Tal vez lo peor de todo para muchos jóvenes alemanes eran las restricciones de las Juventudes en materia de experimentación sexual y flirteo. Todas estas restricciones y con ellas la creciente falta de libertad llegaron a generar una gran irritación por parte de la juventud alemana, provocando la aparición de numerosos grupos de adolescentes que se dedicaban a actividades tan habitualmente propias de la juventud como bailar, escuchar discos y frecuentar cafés. Otros muchos iban a excursiones vistiendo ropas heterogéneas que los airados lideres de las Juventudes Hitlerianos calificaban de “ropa civil de ladrón”, formaban pandillas con nombres románticos, evocados de la Edad Media o del Salvaje Oeste, y escogieron como emblema el edelweiss, probablemente por su asociación con la idea de pureza y alejamiento. Por ultimo, había pandillas de delincuentes, cuya conducta, aunque claramente criminal, poseía cierto sabor a oposición. 17 Grunberger. R: Historia social del Tercer Reich. En resumen, la gran mayoría de los jóvenes alemanes mostró escaso interés por los asuntos políticos durante el periodo nazi y, por lo general, cumplieron las obligaciones establecidas por las Juventudes Hitlerianas, pero muchos las consideraban onerosas. Los jóvenes alemanes no tenían ningún agravante serio en su contra y no sufrieron conflictos graves con las autoridades nazis por las actividades inconformistas menores.
En cuanto a la educación, los nazis intentaron unificar el sistema escolar estableciendo numerosos cambios e igualando el plan de estudios en todas las escuelas. Para el nacionalsocialismo la construcción del carácter de los jóvenes había sido uno de los ideales educacionales más deseados, afirmando que el «carácter no significa independencia y confianza en si mismo, sino un fortalecimiento de si mismo al servicio y la obediencia, en nombre de la Nación, al Führer» 19. Para inculcarle a la juventud el servicio y la obediencia, el individualismo y el entusiasmo los escolares tenían que ser controlados, inyectándoles un sentimiento de comunidad. La idea liberal del “hombre cultivado” tenía que ser reemplazada por un ideal educativo basado en la “camaradería de la batalla”. La “camaradería “ era la comunidad racial comprometida en la “batalla real” contra sus enemigos, por lo que el Ministerio de Educación ordenó que esa doctrina fuese enseñada en todas las escuelas, no solamente en cursos de biología, sino también en la enseñanza de la historia. El deporte adquirió una importancia enorme en los programas escolares y la asignatura de educación física aumentó en importancia cuantitativa y cualitativamente. Se dedicaba al menos cinco horas diarias a la educación física, por su valor en la construcción del carácter y la disciplina, así como para su futura utilización militar. Carreras a campo traviesa, fútbol y boxeo fueron incorporados a ella, convirtiéndose en materia de examen para la obtención del certificado final de la escuela. Las clasificaciones bajas en educación física podían constituir, a la larga, motivo de expulsión de la escuela y de prohibición de seguir estudiando. Otras asignaturas que aumentaron de categoría eran la historia, la biología y el alemán. El enfoque nazi de la enseñanza del alemán incluía un gran interés por las sagas nórdicas y la germanización de palabras procedentes de idiomas extranjeros, y se preparó un nuevo material de lectura a los más jóvenes, enseñándoles la épica de la Guerra Mundial y de las Juventudes Hitlerianas. La importancia de la biología derivaba del énfasis especial que ponía el régimen en los fenómenos de la raza y herencia. Se enseñaba a los 19 Mosse, G.L: La cultura nazi. alumnos a medirse los cráneos y a clasificarse unos a otros según los tipos raciales. Un aspecto incongruente de la enseñanza nazi de la biología era el tabú sobre la educación sexual. De hecho, se decretó que la educación sexual no era incumbencia ni de la escuela ni de las Juventudes Hitlerianas. Las autoridades de la enseñanza se limitaban a influir en los padres en el sentido adecuado y, de modo similar, las Juventudes Hitlerianas definían el hogar paterno como “centro de gravedad de la educación moral”. En cuanto a la educación de las chicas se hizo un intento de darles una educación de acuerdo con el ideal nazi de feminidad, excluyéndolas de estudios que se requerían para la admisión en la universidad, ya que, según los nazis, las mujeres pertenecían al hogar. En resumen, el régimen nazi alemán deseaba formar un hombre nuevo mediante la creación del carácter y de la actitud adecuadas. El judío era el enemigo de este hombre nuevo que había que formar mediante la educación, por lo que se enseño a los jóvenes reconocer sus características raciales a primera vista. Asimismo, la educación y las Juventudes Hitlerianas tenían objetivos comunes: formar hombres y mujeres en los que se pudiera confiar por su ideal de servicio y fe en la concepción nazi del mundo.
4. La familia y la mujer El nacionalsocialismo alemán sostenía que “la familia es la célula más importante del Estado. El que ataca a la familia actúa contra la seguridad del Estado. El nacionalsocialismo ha devuelto a la familia su lugar adecuado” 20. El régimen nazi consideraba a la familia como el cimiento del Estado. Una familia comienza no solo con aquellos que llevan el mismo apellido o que poseen el mismo trozo de tierra o las mismas propiedades, la familia comprende más bien todo lo que es, espiritual y físicamente, un patrimonio de vida en circulo definido de personas. El nuevo régimen demostró ser buen protector de la vida familiar imponiendo fuertes limitaciones a la igualdad de la mujer, al aborto, a la homosexualidad y prostitución. Se reanimó la actividad económica y las medidas eugenesicas especiales como provocar una subida espectacular en la curva demográfica; la fertilidad y los matrimonios aumentaron en la proporción. Las medidas eugenesicas del régimen fueron principalmente de carácter monetario y propagandístico. Los incentivos económicos a la fecundidad eran básicamente de tres tipos: prestamos matrimoniales, subsidios por hijos y subsidios familiares.

La propaganda inculcaba un animo favorable a la procreación mediante la manipulación del lenguaje, los rituales y las presiones sociales, así como a través de un plan de revolución domestica. Se efectuaban exposiciones encaminadas a mostrar que los hombres más grandes del mundo tenían una docena de hermanos y se dio valor aristocrático al termino “familia” reservándolo principalmente a los padres con cuatro hijos o más. Se utilizaba constantemente la emotiva expresión “Kindersegen” (bendecido con hijos), mientras al deseo de una vida no estorbada por los hijos se le llamaba “subproducto de la civilización de asfalto”, considerándolo tan despreciable como la deserción en la batalla. Se puso en movimiento un verdadero culto a la maternidad. Anualmente se concedía a las madres prolíficas una medalla, la Cruz de Honor de la Madre Alemana, que llevaba gravada en el anverso la frase: “El hijo ennoblece a la madre”. El reflejo del homenaje se extendió por toda la sociedad. En tranvías, autobuses y metros, los hombres se ponían en pie de un salto para ofrecer sus asientos a las mujeres embarazadas o a las que llevaban niños pequeños. Durante la guerra, cuando la adoración nazi de la maternidad llegó a su punto culminante con la creación del eslogan “ He donado un hijo al Führer”, las futuras madres recibían también raciones mayores de alimentos y cobijo más seguro contra los ataques aéreos. En su preocupación por la batalla de los nacimientos el régimen intentó provocar una especie de revolución en el hogar alemán. Como la mayor carga de trabajo que las familias numerosas imponían a las mujeres iba en contra del crecimiento de la población, los periódicos lanzaron una campaña en favor de la igualdad de los esposos, respaldada por fotografiás de maridos ejemplares empujando cochecitos de niños y llevando cestos de compra. Aunque esta imagen de los varones alemanes permaneció en gran medida en el reino de la fantasía, se puso efectivamente a disposición de las medres una cierta asistencia domestica y se creó una asociación especial para tratar los problemas generales de la familia. Inmediatamente después de la toma del poder por los nazis se prohibió el anuncio y exhibición de anticonceptivos, y se cerraron todas las clínicas para el control de la natalidad. Los abortos fueron denominados “actos de sabotaje contra el futuro racial de Alemania” y castigados de acuerdo con esta concepción. Se estableció la “ley de protección de las madres” que prohibía que estas trabajasen durante las seis semanas anteriores y posteriores al parto. Las empleadas embrazadas preferían a menudo trabajar hasta el comienzo de los dolores antes de verse perjudicadas por una reducción de la paga. Por la misma razón se ocupaban de sus hijos sólo durante unos días y después los entregaban al cuidado de otra persona. Para combatir esta practica, la organización “Madre e Hijo” creó
hogares de convalecencia posnatal y guarderías en los
pueblos. 17
El nacionalsocialismo había declarado de modo autoritario que se iba a poner el fin al enfrentamiento generacional y no se permitía que ninguna cuestión conflictiva estropease la armonía interna de la familia y el Reich. No obstante, la vida familiar siguió viéndose afectada por conflictos entre las generaciones, aunque en forma menos abierta. Al ser más susceptibles al adoctrinamiento y estar más expuestos al nazismo en la escuela y en las Juventudes Hitlerianas, los jóvenes tendían a mostrar una mayor conformidad que sus padres. Con el temor de los padres a ser denunciados por sus hijos o el hecho de que las conversaciones familiares pudieran ser inocentemente repetidas en público, el diálogo entre las distintas generaciones disminuyó todavía más. Las relaciones entre madres e hijos se vieron particularmente afectadas. También las relaciones entre los esposos empeoraron, ya que los maridos vivían la mayor parte del tiempo para el partido y sus obligaciones con él, lo que les impedía utilizar el hogar más que para comer y dormir. Y según el régimen «es deber de un marido participar en las actividades nacionalsocialistas, y una esposa que causa problemas en este sentido da motivos para el divorcio. No debe quejarse si su marido dedica dos noches a la semana a la actividad política ; asimismo, los domingos por la mañana no pertenecen sólo a la familia»21. El régimen engendró toda una serie de presiones contrarias a la cohesión familiar: el enrolamiento de los jóvenes para largos periodos de tiempo, el amplio empleo industrial de las mujeres, el aumento de las horas extraordinarias y de los turnos de noche, la creación de puestos de trabajo que sólo permitían a sus ocupantes ir a casa los fines de semana. Además de las esposas repudiadas, había bastantes padres y madres repudiados, es decir, personas cuyas convicciones políticas o religiosas llevaban a las autoridades a apartar de ellas a sus hijos. El procedimiento oficial era muy simple: si la delegación local de Juventudes descubría que un niño estaba siendo educado en una atmósfera familiar inconformista, solicitaba al tribunal tutelar de menores una orden de traslado a un lugar “políticamente de confianza”. Entre los delitos que se castigaban con el secuestro judicial de los hijos estaban la amistad con judíos, la negativa a enrolar a los muchachos en la Juventudes Hitlerianas y la pertenencia a los Testigos de Jahova. Los tribunales nazis estaban muy ocupados con acciones relacionadas con la legislación familiar, como por ejemplo, las investigaciones de paternidad. Las relaciones sexuales preconyugales eran practica frecuente bajo el Tercer Reich. En su preocupación eugenesica por establecer la ascendencia de cada recién nacido, el gobierno dio poderes a las autoridades, para que exigiesen que la madre y todos los posibles padres se sometiesen al análisis de sangre, después de lo cual el niño podía ser apartado de su hogar. Mientras anteriormente un padre sólo podía intentar demostrar su paternidad dentro de los doce meses posteriores al nacimiento del niño, esto podía 21 Grunberger. R: Historia social del Tercer Reich. hacerse ahora mientra viviese el niño o incluso después de su muerte. Si un marido intentaba encubrir el adulterio de su esposa, intervenía el estado para establecer la verdadera paternidad. El régimen había lanzado una campaña destinada a otorgar la igualdad de condición así como de respeto publico de las madres solteras y sus hijos. Esta campaña encontró su expresión institucionalizada en Lebensborn (Manantial de la Vida), la fundación creada por Himmler para mujeres solteras con progenie debida a hombres de la SS y otros alemanes de valor racial. Según palabras de su fundador , «Lebensborn partió del principio de que había una gran necesidad de dar a las mujeres racialmente satisfactorias portadoras de hijos ilegítimos la oportunidad de tenerlos sin gastos y de pasar las últimas semanas de embarazo en un ambiente tranquilo»22. Además de la residencia prenatal y posnatal en sus hogares, Lebensborn se encargaba de las legitimaciones nominales, defendía las obligaciones económicas de los padres y actuaba como servicio de adopción para los miembros del partido interesados. El régimen nazi puso una orden
de
procreación a los miembros de la SS diciendo: «Sólo el que deja un hijo tras él puede morir tranquilo... Más allá de los limites de las leyes y costumbres burgueses, quizá en otros casos necesarios, y fuera de la esfera del matrimonio la tarea sublime de mujeres y muchachas alemanas de buena sangre, comportándose no frivolamente sino con una profunda seriedad moral, es convertirse en madres de hijos de soldados que parten para la batalla y de quienes sólo el destino sabe, si regresarán o morirán por Alemania»23. Cuando una de estas madres perdió al padre de su hijo en combate, Adolf Hitler le dirigía la siguiente carta: «Me declaro dispuesto a ser el padrino de su hijo. Por lo que se refiere al apoyo estatal, usted y su hijo serán tratados exactamente como si el matrimonio se hubiera efectuado. Cunado haya que incluir en el registro civil los nombres del niño como el suyo, se pondrá el termino “padre de guerra” en el espacio destinado al nombre del padre. La madre conservará su apellido de soltera, pero al dirigirse a ella se empleará el término Frau » 24. «Paradojicamente, cuando se trató de la verdadera reconstrucción de la sociedad alemana en la posguerra, el potencial regenerativo de la familia resultó más fuerte de lo que hacía esperar lo ocurrido durante el Tercer Reich. Aunque la guerra había tenido el efecto de exacerbar aún más las relaciones familiares perturbadas, en general tendió a unir más a las familias integradas así como otras que coexistían indiferentemente. Quizás esto no fuera tan sorprendente, al fin y al cabo, en el año cero de 1945, la familia debió de parecer la única institución social viable que quedaba en el país, del mismo modo que los apellidos eran las únicas señas de identidad por los cueles podían reconocerse entre si las gentes que ya no eran nazis y no estaban seguros de si eran todavía 22 Grunberger. alemanes» 25.
El nacionalsocialismo afirmaba que «la mujer ha sido siempre el mejor camarada del hombre, tanto en su labor como en su vida» 26 y decía: «Sabemos que la mujer tiene una dura tarea que cumplir. El nacionalsocialismo permanece detrás de ella, confortandola, porque ella le tiende también una mano de ayuda. La mujer es camarada, es un compañero combatiente» 27. A continuación comunicaba: «Aspiramos a crear las más amplias posibilidades para ella,a fin de que pueda ser cooperadora en la fundación de su familia y capaz de traer hijos al mundo, porque esta función es su forma máxima de beneficiar a nuestro pueblo. La mujer que ha parido hijos y los ha educado ha asegurado la permanencia de nuestra raza» 28. Según Joseph Goebbels, uno de los hombres mas importantes del Hitler, «la misión de la mujer es ser hermosa y traer hijos al mundo»29. Este hombre también sostenía que «una mujer que sea capaz de permanecer intelectualmente al lado de su marido en defensa de sus intereses, al igual que en la vida común, y que contribuya a hacer el mundo mas hermoso y rico en contenido para él. Tal es el tipo de la mujer ideal para el hombre alemán de hoy. Una mujer que ante todo y sobre todo sea capaz de ser madre»30. El núcleo del pensamiento nazi acerca de la cuestión femenina era el dogma de la desigualdad de los sexos y esto implicaba su irremisible confinamiento al ámbito domestico. El primer signo visible de la inferioridad femenina fue su destierro del mundo político que se llevó a cabo con la siguiente afirmación por parte del régimen: «El hecho de que hayamos apartado a las mujeres de la vida publica se debe únicamente a nuestra voluntad de devolverles su dignidad esencial»31. Poco a poco las doctoras y funcionarias casadas fueron despedidas de sus puestos y se prohibió a las mujeres desempeñar las funciones de juez y fiscal del estado, declarándolas inaptas para las funciones jurídicas alegando que «no pueden pensar lógicamente ni razonar objetivamente, puesto que se rigen sólo por sus emociones»32. Aunque se hablaba mucho de obligar a las mujeres casadas a volver a sus hogares para dejar libres puestos de trabajo que serían ocupadas por hombres, el trabajo de la mujer era indispensable. Dado

que existía en aquel entonces una fuerte tendencia de la mano de obra femenina a buscar trabajos mejor pagados en el sector comercial y en las ciudades, el gobierno instituyó un “servicio social” obligatorio, de un año de duración, para todas las muchachas solteras o mujeres menores del 25 años que fueran a trabajar como oficinistas o empleadas de la confección, el ramo textil o las industrias del tabaco. La autoridades emitieron disposiciones que dispensaban a las trabajadoras de levantar pesos superiores a los 15 kg. y algunos empresarios considerados concedieron a las mujeres casadas el derecho de elegir los turnos y otros les permitieron trabajar cinco días a la semana en lugar de seis. Pero esto no oculta una contradicción básica: el hecho de que aquellas a quienes la retorica nazi había destinado a la cocina y al cuidado de los hijos hubiesen pasado a constituir las tres quintas partes de la mano de obra alemana durante la guerra.
El Tercer Reich convirtió el periodo de maternidad de la mujer en el apogeo de su ciclo vital. Las mujeres gozaban de la máxima consideración entre el matrimonio y la menopausia, después de la cual iba quedando en una situación de segundo plano, de “superfluidad eugenesica”. Pero debido a las tensiones de la guerra y a la ausencia de los hombres, muchas mujeres se oponían a la finalidad biológica que se imponía a su existencia y aspiraban a la satisfacción de sus impulsos eróticos. Estrechamente relacionada con el papel sexual de la mujer en la sociedad estaba la cuestión de vestir y sus modales. La toma del poder por parte de los nazis provocó un gran cambio del papel que había jugado la apariencia femenina antes de 1933, en que se había contribuido a dar un aire de elegancia y ligereza a la vida alemana. Los militantes del partido levantaron una gran oleada de polémicas, exhortaciones y amenazas encaminadas a hacer volver a la mujer alemana a sus supuestas virtudes primordiales. «Condenaban el maquillaje, definiéndolo como adecuado a las caras sensuales y a los gruesos labios de las levantinas: “La cosa mas antinatural que podemos ver por las calles es una mujer alemana que, desdeñando todas las leyes de las belleza, se ha embadurnado la cara con pinturas de guerra orientales”» 33. Dado que la delgadez era considerada incompatible con la concepción de muchos hijos se quería persuadir a las mujeres de que no se preocupasen por la figura. El régimen creó un tipo ideal de femineidad del cual fueron presentadas como prototipos las dirigentes de la sección femenina del Frente del Trabajo. Esas mujeres eran educadas “con severidad espartana” enseñadas a prescindir de los cosméticos, a vestirse de la manera más simple, a no mostrar vanidad individual alguna, a dormir en camas duras y a evitar “los refinamientos en el terreno culinario”. La imagen ideal de aquellas figuras de anchas caderas, no apresionadas por fajas, era de un rubio radiante, con el cabello recogido en un moño o en una 33 Grunberger. diadema de trenzas. Un libro publicado en 1934, Las mujeres alemanas a Adolf Hitler, recogía una serie de quejas acerca de algunas de las más evidentes deficiencias del sistema nazi, desde el punto de vista de la mujer: «Hoy en día, los hombres no son educados para el matrimonio, sino contra él. Los hombres se agrupan en los clubs y en los albergues. Los matrimonios tienen hoy menos cosas en común y ejercen cada vez menos influencia sobre sus hijos. La mujer se hunde más y más en las tinieblas de la soledad. Vemos a nuestras hijas crecer en una triste ociosidad, viviendo sólo por la vaga esperanza de encontrar un marido y tener hijos. Si no lo consiguen, sus vidas se verán frustradas. Hoy en día los hijos varones, incluso de niños no sienten respeto alguno por sus madres. Las tratan como a sus sirvientas por la ley natural, y consideran a las mujeres en general como obedientes instrumentos de sus propósitos y deseos»34.
5. El trabajo y los trabajadores El nacionalsocialismo alemán sostenía que “el trabajo es la bendición y la libertad de los alemanes”, y que “un pueblo sólo tiene algo si trabaja, si es activo, si se esfuerza en aumentar su producción para encontrarse entonces en condición de poner la masa de la producción frente al poder adquisitivo”. Hitler proclamó como primer deber para el restablecimiento de la salud nacional que aprendieran a entenderse de nuevo y encontrarse mutuamente los millones de alemanes separados unos de otros por clases, artificialmente creadas y obstinadas por el prejuicio de castas y por las psicosis de sus diferencias. El Führer decía: “Honrad el trabajo y respetad al trabajador”. También afirmaba que “ el respeto no depende de la naturaleza del trabajo sino de la manera de ejecutarlo. Obreros, campesinos y burgueses deben formar una sola comunidad. Del día más hermoso de la primavera se puede hacer un símbolo del trabajo creador, de la confraternidad y con esto del resurgimiento del pueblo”. Con estas ideas el régimen nazi centró sus cometidos en todas aquellas partes de la política social relacionadas con el trabajo y los trabajadores. Según los nazis, la Nación tenia que ser una unidad eterna, y todos sus miembros se suponían iguales en categoría, aunque no en función. Tiene que haber una jerarquía, pero el puesto de los individuos en ella debe ser determinado por su servicio a la Nación, y aunque un miembro puede ser un patrono y otro un trabajador asalariado de aquél, ambos, teoreticamente, eran iguales, porque estaban unidos por una ideología común y por un propósito común. El nacionalsocialismo procedió a edificar un imperio que no solamente organizaba y cuidaba el bienestar social de los trabajadores asalariados, sino que también intentaba 34 Grunberger. rodearles de la debida atmósfera cultural. El estado nazi llevó a cabo numerosos cambios de las condiciones del trabajo: por una parte, la protección del trabajo se ha aumentado por medio de la asistencia sanitaria general, asimismo se ha establecido la reglamentación de licencias, vacaciones, organización de las horas libres y del recreo, y por otra, la protección del trabajador, en caso de paro, por mediación y subsidio fue ampliada en el sentido de procurar trabajo, dirigir la mano de obra y ofrecer las posibilidades del trabajo. Para mejorar la vida del trabajador se organizaba en sus horas libres excursiones, asistencias al teatro y la opera, y las participaciones en deportes. El nacionalsocialismo quería crear un nuevo tipo de trabajador, muy alejado del trabajador con consciencia de clases de los tiempos anteriores. Asimismo, consiguió devolver al obrero su dignidad humana y encajarle con igualdad de derechos en el cuerpo nacional. Todos los trabajadores que participan en la obra común son igualmente respetados y honrados. El régimen nazi creó el llamado “Servicio Obligatorio del Trabajo” que ha de ser un deber de honor de la juventud alemana y un servicio prestado al pueblo. La propia experiencia adquirida por el joven alemán en el Servicio del Trabajo le será útil para apreciar con justicia el valor ético del trabajo y para saber comportarse dentro de lo que significa en Alemania el concepto de comunidad de trabajo. Porque el nacionalsocialismo quería eliminar toda actitud egoísta y material con respecto al trabajo, cada joven alemán debía trabajar durante cierto tiempo de su vida en la seguridad de rendir un servicio de honor a su pueblo. Como se quería extinguir el orgulloso desdén por el trabajo manual y rural, y se quería asimismo exterminar radicalmente el orgullo y el odio de clases, por eso el estudiante debía estar junto al joven obrero que trabajaba en la fábrica y el mozo de labranza que laboraba los campos, reunidos todos por lazos de camaradería en una comunidad de trabajo para ofrendar su servicio al mismo pueblo. Porque la nueva Alemania quería enaltecer el nombre del trabajador, haciéndole el titulo de honor para todo alemán, por eso todo joven alemán en calidad de obrero manual debía hacer su servicio de honor al Estado.
6. Conclusión El nazismo había conseguido que cada alemán encontrase el sentido de su existencia al saberse miembro de una comunidad unida y, de esta forma, había ganado la aprobación y la simpatía de diferentes clases sociales del pueblo alemán. El régimen nazi había dividido el pueblo alemán en dos bandos: los partidarios del sistema que apoyaban al gobierno y que podrían entregar hasta su propio vecino, si este diría algo en contra del régimen; y la gente que no estaba de acuerdo 23
con la opresión del pueblo y se abstenía a formar una resistencia activa únicamente por el miedo. Muchos ciudadanos, a pesar de ser conscientes de la falta de libertad y el desagradable control del régimen sobre la sociedad, encontraron en la ideología nazi no sólo múltiples ventajas, sino también nuevas ideas muy atractivas y convincentes para mejorar muchas cosas en la vida cotidiana del pueblo alemán. Otros, sin embargo, nunca consiguieron encontrar el lado positivo de la ideología de este sistema, y su desprecio y odio hacia ésta crecía aún más cuando contemplaban como sus amigos y familiares se dejaban hechizar por algo tan absurdo. La mentalidad alemana, formada durante el Tercer Reich, experimento múltiples y enormes cambios en casi todos los ámbitos. Tras la República de Weimar, basada en unos principios de consciencia de clase, la sociedad alemana empezó a conocer la concepción de igualdad entre clases, que permite crear una comunidad del pueblo, en la que existan derechos comunes y no haya explotación de las personas. El régimen nazi, desde el principio, inculcó en la sociedad alemana que cualquier ciudadano de sangre alemana racialmente limpia tiene derecho de vivir honradamente y ser protegido por el Estado independientemente de su rango social. Se estableció la idea de que no el individuo es importante para el bien del Estado sino toda la nación. Los alemanes estaban tan convencidos de ello que ellos mismos contribuyeron a controlar unos a otros para salvaguardar la unidad y el orden nacional, y no permitir ninguna felonía por parte de algún ciudadano espiritualmente perdido. Creían en que esta ideología sería capaz de unir a todos los alemanes en todos los ámbitos para siempre y acabar con las injusticias mediante el establecimiento de la igualdad social de todos los miembros de la nación. En la mentalidad del pueblo alemán se iba creando una idea de que todo el país estaba encontrándose a si mismo a través de la ayuda mutua y que la nación entera debe contribuir a la comunidad del pueblo para hacer posible su existencia eterna. La construcción del carácter de la juventud era el objetivo principal del régimen nazi. Se grabó en la mentalidad de los jóvenes alemanes el sentimiento de la comunidad y la camaradería, cuyo principal interés era crear una unidad para luchar contra el enemigo. Los jóvenes empezaron a conocer la importancia de la disciplina y la obediencia, que se inculcaba en sus cabezas dando un valor tremendo a la practica del deporte en la educación. Asimismo, la juventud crecía con la idea de que sus acciones apropiadas y sus actitudes adecuadas son imprescindibles para la existencia y la inmortalidad de la nación aria. Aunque, a veces, eran conscientes de la gran falta de libertad y numerosas prohibiciones, que les quitaban la posibilidad de vivir su vida libremente como verdaderos adolescentes, crecían con el pensamiento de que subsisten sobre todo y ante todo para su patria y el hecho de morir en su defensa era un orgullo. 24
El nacionalsocialismo creo una nueva concepción de la familia y de la mujer en la sociedad alemana. En el pensamiento de la ciudadanía se formó la idea de que la mujer es el camarada más importante de la nación, ya que ella contribuye a su desarrollo y su pervivencia. En la mentalidad de los alemanes se estableció un gran respeto por la mujer, cuyo papel principal era ser madre y compañera fiel de su marido. Aunque muchas féminas alemanas detestaban este papel de la parturienta y sirvienta, cuya vida sólo se limitaba a cuidar de su familia- el fundamento principal del nuevo Estado- se sentían orgullosas de ser un miembro imprescindible de la nación y de la gran importancia que se daba a su papel de madre. En la mente de las muchachas alemanas se creó una ilusión enorme para ser madre y donar un niño al Führer, ya que era un gran orgullo asegurar la existencia de la nación alemana. El régimen nazi inculcó en la mentalidad alemana un gran respeto por el trabajo y el trabajador. Para esta sociedad el trabajo era una bendición y el trabajar significaba enriquecer a su pueblo, para asegurar su vida. Gracias a los cambios que introdujo el régimen de Hitler, muchos alemanes pudieron darse cuenta de que esta actividad no significaba opresión y explotación, en la que no existen derechos humanos, sino que es un servicio de honor al Estado, en el que todos los miembros de la nación son igualmente honrados y respetados. En resumen, cabe destacar el hecho de que, a pesar de muchos actos brutales y malvados del régimen nacionalsocialista alemán, esta doctrina tuvo un efecto positivo en muchos aspectos de la mentalidad alemana. El hecho de que la sociedad alemana mantenga muchos principios de aquella ideología hoy en día, la convierte en una nación casi perfecta y ejemplar para otros estados del mundo. La imagen común que tenemos todos los seres humanos de los alemanes es de un pueblo ordenado, organizado, que respeta al trabajador, la propiedad nacional y privada, y que sabe quedarse unido en cualquier situación. Así pues, esta mentalidad tan apreciada por todos nosotros no es más ni menos el resultado del régimen más odiado y despreciado por la historia mundial.
