Safety Safety during construction: It is the responsibilities of the applicant/engineer to seek competent advice to ensure the stability of excavations, superstructure, superstructure, stanchion foundations, wall foundations and to avoid any other foreseeable risk. Power Lines: Buildings shall not be constructed under or nearer than 10m to an overhead power supply. If advice is required, or if power lines need to be diverted, it is the applicant’s responsibility to contact, in writing, the local ESB supervisor before construction commences commences and then to follow the ESB conditions. 

 

Site Preparation 

 



Excavate all topsoil to a minimum depth of 150mm. Any soft spots or areas of mud or dung on the surface will have to be excavated down to solid ground. A bit extra will need to be excavated where the channels channels are going to be located. The overall site should fall in the direction of the collection point(s). The fall in the site should reflect the fall on the finished surface and should lie li e somewhere in the range of 1 in 60 to 1 in 100.

Preparation for Foundations 

 





Place a layer of graded hard-core over the site and extend it at least 300mm beyond the proposed edges of the slab. Compact the hard-core with a vibrating roller to a finished depth of at least 150 mm. Hard-core placed in excavated soft spots or on made-up ground should be compacted in 150mm layers. Be extra thorough in i n compacting made-up ground. Blind the compacted hard-core with sand or dust and run the vibrating roller over it one last time to bed it in. Lay a sheet of 1000 gauge polythene on the finished foundation.

Concrete 





The area of the proposed silage slab shall be set out with timber shuttering supported in place to cast the concrete slab. A minimum 30N20 concrete mix shall be used. This will ensure a concrete of 30N/mm2 and the biggest aggregate size of 20mm. The required A393 steel mesh shall be placed in position, ensuring the required cover and lab length is maintained.

Method Statement 







The channel sections around the perimeter of the slab shall be cast in accordance to the design, at a depth of 100mm and a width of 150mm. Place and compact the concrete to a finished depth of 250mm, making sure the concrete is at least 150mm thick under the channels. The slab shall be compacted using a vibrating screed and poker vibrator, to ensure the removal of air trapped during the mixing process. To ensure the required fall of 1 in 60 from the edge of the slab t o the start of it, a laser level shall be used.

Contraction Joints  

The depth of this joint should be 1/4 t o 1/3 the thickness of the slab. Shallow tracks are useless. The joint should be cut deeper near the channels (because the concrete is thickened there).

Sealing Joints  

 

  

When the slab has cured properly the joi nts can be sealed. Prepare all the joints already cut by widening out near the surface with a concrete saw to 12-20mm wide and deep. Brush out all the joints thoroughly to remove all the dust and debris. Two broad types of sealant shall be used, either hot poured rubberised bitumen or gun applied  polyurethane. Care must be exercised in the use of concrete saws saws for cutting joints. j oints. Wear a suitable dusk mask (giving P2 protection) as well as ear, eye and foot protection. Hot rubberised bitumen is 165 - 1700C when ready for pouring. So, be sure to read the safety  precautions on the the product information. information.
