Bengal Meat Processing Industries Ltd. is a export oriented meat processing company in Bangladesh. The company provides fresh, hygienic and Halal meat. Bengal Meat is an ISO 22000:2005, HACCP and Halal certified company. Bengal Meat has been regularly exporting cattle and goat to Kuwait and Dubai with a high degree of success over the past few years. Bengal Meat is also a regular supplier of beef and mutton to five star hotels like the Westin, Radisson and Pan Pacific in Dhaka city. Production capacity is 20 tons of meat per eight hour shift. It has its own veterinarians present at the processing factory to carry out ante mortem and post mortem on the cattle and goat, hence ensuring a consistent and high quality of meat.

institutions like global halal certification, halal logo and branding, there are huge potential of export of halal meat from Bangladesh to Malaysia to boost its export earnings. At present, Malaysia is a major halal meat importing country mostly sourcing its halal meat-beef and mutton from India, Australia and New Zealand. The total volume of Malaysian import of beef and mutton per year is around 85,000 and 17,000 metric tons respectively. But, the Malaysian importers can not import halal meat from Bangladesh as long as Bangladesh is not included in the list of eligible meat sourcing destination. Malaysia rigorously imposes compliance of national halal certification and the health and sanitary requirements for importing halal meat from abroad, which Bangladesh is yet to tap, as it is not included in the list of eligible meat importing destination for Malaysia. "As a predominantly Muslim country, we can penetrate into Malaysian market both for its domestic market and also for further processing and export provided we can create necessary capacity and institutions to Page | 8
catch the market," Shafi U Ahmed, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia told BDNEWS. The Department of Veterinary Services of Malaysia has control measures to manage risk in terms of animal health and food safety for imported meat and meat products. These measures include import risk analysis, inspection and approval of slaughterhouses and processing plants. To carry out an import risk analysis, the Malaysian authority sought for relevant information from Bangladesh and the licensing authority here plans to visit Bangladesh to evaluate the overall facilities, including the animal health status and animal husbandry practices in Bangladesh, sources at the Bangladesh High Commission said. "The imports of halal meat from Bangladesh will depend on this evaluation and final approval in terms of food safety and halal requirements," the source said adding that Malaysia wanted to know about information on Livestock/Poultry Abattoirs, form of information on Islamic Organization for issuance Halal certificates, information on Animal and Public Health Services and information on Animal and Public Health Services. A Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed with Barakah Import Export (M) Sdn Bhd, Malaysia and Premium Abattoir, Bangladesh, sources said.” Bangladesh might start exporting halal meat, fruits and other agro products to Malaysia. A high-level delegation of the Malaysian government today expressed keen interest to import halal meat, fruits and agri-products from Bangladesh. The delegation led by Chief Minister of Perlis Province of Malaysia Dr Md Isa Bin Sabu expressed the interest during a call on Industries Minister Dilip Barua at his office here.

Industries Secretary KH Masud Siddiqui, Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Jamaluddin Sabeh and General Manager of Perlis Marine Engineering Norsiake Bin Kassim were present. The visiting delegation also said that they had already taken primary preparations for investing in the shipbuilding sector of Bangladesh. Welcoming the willingness to invest in the shipbuilding industry, the minister said at present the country is building ships, which are being exported to many Scandinavian countries including Denmark. He urged the Malaysian government to invest in various potential sectors including pharmaceuticals, information technology (IT) and agro-based industry for the mutual benefit of the two countries. An excellent investment-friendly atmosphere is now prevailing in the country, he said adding Bangladesh could be a good destination for any investor. Terming Bangladeshi people as very creative and talented, Dilip called upon the Malaysian government to recruit more Bangladeshi workers. During the meeting, he requested the chief minister to help solve various problems of Bangladesh workers in Malaysia. There is huge potentiality of improving trade relations between the two countries, Dr Isa said adding Malaysia wants to improve trade ties with Bangladesh. He said he would share experiences of his Bangladesh visit and different potentials with the central government of Malaysia to enhance the bilateral trade relations.

LEIC contributes to processed meat export from Bangladesh The Local Enterprise Investment Centre (LEIC) has recently signed a contribution agreement with the Bengal Meat Processing Industries Limited (BMPIL). Under this agreement, LEIC will assist BMPIL to conduct an extensive training program for two months, to increase its existing export of processed meat to UAE and Kuwait. The training would also help BMPIL to address production management and quality assurance issues, and various social, environmental and HR compliances required for the international market. This will create a pool of trained human resources, ready to explore export opportunities in Malaysia, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and other countries. LEIC, a private sector development project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and managed by IDLC Finance Limited, is working with a special focus to facilitate inter-company longterm alliances.
Frozen food: Next big export Seamark chairman shares his expectations with The Daily Star

Iqbal Ahmed, chairman and chief executive of Seamark (BD) Ltd, is seen at his food processing factory in Chittagong. Frozen food has the potential of overtaking readymade garment as the number one export item, says a leading entrepreneur in the food processing sector. "It (frozen food) can earn export revenue several times higher than what garments do. People need at best two new shirts a month, but they take either meat or fish every day," says Iqbal Ahmed, chairman and chief executive of Seamark (BD) Ltd. In the frozen food sector, the company clinched National Export Trophy (Gold) for fiscal 2006-2007 and National Export Trophy (Silver) for 20052006 from Chittagong. "If the government supports are there, earnings from frozen food export may cross billions," Ahmed says. Seamark (BD) Ltd is a subsidiary of the UK-based Seamark Group. Seamark Plc, the first company of Seamark Group, was the recipient of the Queen's Award for export in 1998 and the first European Business Award in 1999. At that time Seamark Plc that comprises three production units -- IBCO Building, Seamark 1 and Seamark 2 located in Manchester -- contributed 80 percent of the export of frozen shrimp and fisheries from the UK. Ahmed says most of the Bangladeshi restaurants in Europe import fish, shrimp, frozen vegetables and frozen pastry products from Bangladesh. Shrimp comprises only one percent of frozen foods, while the demand for chicken is higher.

The European countries import raw materials of poultry products from Brazil under joint venture and meat from Australia and New Zealand, Ahmed says. "Monitoring measures should be taken to step in the world market of chicken to make sure that the food item doesn't contain any chemical element harmful to human health." Europe still does not allow meat from Bangladesh since the country is yet to develop cattle farming infrastructure and factories of international standard. There is certain mechanism in Bangladesh to facilitate shrimp export, and poultry or cattle also needs such a mechanism, says the Seamark (BD) chairman. He also emphasizes increasing productivity and ensuring facilities to boost the export of frozen fishes, particularly shrimp. "Our farmers produce some 300kg to 500kg of shrimps per hectare as against 5,000kg produced in other countries like Vietnam, China and Thailand," he says. "It depends on farming skill and technique." To increase productivity, he stresses providing the farmers and workers with training under government initiatives and involving them in entrepreneurship. Also, leasing out water bodies can help farming through cooperatives, and training under private initiative can increase production. He also underscores the need for enhancing research activities to produce good spawns and improve the method of shrimp farming that involves rural people in farm level.

Ahmed says the lone laboratory in Dhaka is not enough to test shrimps produced in Chittagong, Khulna and Cox's Bazar. "Issuance of certificates after conducting antibiotic test through this single lab takes 25 to 30 days, whereas it takes only three to five days in neighboring India. Within 30 days an order can be cancelled or price may fall," he says. "We need at least four labs. It has been our demand for years." "It doesn't require a lot of fund either," he says. Many non-resident Bangladeshis will invest in the sector if good infrastructure and environment is there. "We work within a system. If we get that system easily, we will surely flock here to set up different industries that would help us reduce production cost with cheaper labour and benefit the country through job creation and technology transfer," he says. Ahmed says Seamark (BD) together with its two other sister concerns -IBCO Foods and Seamark (Holding) -- has an annual turnover of $60 million, while the turnover of the three companies under Seamark UK chapter stands at $325 million. "Frozen food sector has a huge prospect here and if congenial investment atmosphere prevails, the NRBs in the UK may make a remarkable contribution to the economy of Bangladesh," says Ahmed, also the chairman of Bangladesh-British Chamber of Commerce.

Though Bangladesh is not a country that produce huge amount of meat but it started to export meat to Asia, Europe and middle east countries. In middle east accept Bangladesh in this sector cordially for producing Halal meat. We are hoping for huge export in this sector like others. It can earn huge foreign remittance.
