MAJOR SCALE SOLOING Beginner INTRODUCTION Welcome to this JamTrackCentral masterclass! There are three parts: par ts: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. You You can choose your level, but also consider working through the whole masterclass. Even if you can play the licks or exercises from the Intermediate Intermediate or Advanced parts parts,, you could still learn something new from the easier parts. The format is the same for all three parts. We’ll We’ll start by looking at some theoretical concepts with exercises to develop develop your technique or fretboard knowledge. knowledge. Next we’ll see how these concepts can be used in a real musical situation with a series of short shor t licks. Finally, Finally, we’ll throw everything together into a cool solo that you can learn or just use for ideas. OK, are you ready?
INTRODUCING THE MAJOR SCALE Let’s start with the real basics. What IS a scale? Basically, Basically, a scale is just a group of notes with a melodic function, func tion, and we usually arrange them WWW.JAMTRACKCENTRAL.COM

in a line for convenience. The important thing, though, is the SOUND. Think of a scale as a recipe for a musical flavour. flavour. If you’re making pizza, you need tomatoes and cheese, not coffee and strawberries. If you’re making an uplifting, feelgood soul song, try the major scale. The Phrygian mode is going to taste pretty bad! In this part par t of the masterclass, we’re going to be dealing with the C major scale, so here it is, positioned down at the guitar’s lowest fretboard position...
This brings us to the “character” of the major scale. It has a bad reputation compared to some of its closest cousins. It doesn’t have the blues/jazz cool of the Mixolydian or the enigmatic mystery of the Lydian. Then there’s there’s the “Doe a Deer” thing from The Sound of Music, and probably a lot of bad memories of boring school music lessons. As a result, lots lot s of guitarists never work on major scale improvisation, which is a shame. People have been using the major scale to make great music for hundreds of years. Like any other scale, it just takes a little work to add its it s sounds to your vocabulary.
INTERVALS The sound or “character” of any scale is the result of its unique combination of intervals. In music, an interval is the distance between two t wo notes... normally counted in semitones semitones (halftones) but you might also count an interval in frets on a guitar. Each fret is a semitone. There are intervals between all notes in a scale, but our primary concern is the distance between each note and the root. The root is the “home” note; we’re we’re using C major here, so the root note is C. Here’s the pattern... C --> D = major 2nd (two frets or semitones) C --> E = major 3rd (four frets) C --> F = 4th (five frets) C --> G = 5th (seven frets) C --> A = major 6th (nine frets) C --> B = major 7th (eleven frets) And then we reach C again, and the pattern repeats. You’ll You’ll find those intervals in other scales, but what’s important is that t hat COMBINATION COMBINATION of intervals. No other scale has the major 2nd, major 3rd, 4th, 5th, major 6th and major 7th. That’s the major scale.

MAJOR SCALE SOLOING - BEGINNER JTC MASTERCLASS
Just be careful not to confuse the names and the sizes of the intervals... the 5th is 7 frets above the root! It gets its name because it’s the 5th note of the major scale, reminding us how so much music theory is built around that scale. We’re We’re telling you all this because intervals will be a primary subject in this masterclass. We’re We’re not going to grab a bunch of 3-note-per-string patterns and just shred - we want to find out how to target cool melodies and phrases that work with the backing (and THEN we’ll shred!) Here’s that basic C major scale pattern again, but concentrating on the inter vals. As you play each interval, listen carefully to its sound...
Related to the concept of intervals is another very impor tant concept in this masterclass...
TARGET NOTES This is what we were alluding to before, with the whole 3 -note-per-string shred thing. We’ve We’ve all been there before... you learn a new scale and start star t ripping up and down the fretboard, trying to connect as many notes as possible p ossible in one smooth line. And the result? A bit like this:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVW XZ1234567890!@£$%^&*()-_=+[]{};:’”\|,.<>?/ AWESOME TYPING! TYPI NG! CAN YOU SHARE THE TAB FOR THAT? THAT?
Being serious, this is not a criticism of fast playing. You can play fast, slow, high, low, loud, quiet... it’s all fine, but the important thing is to make a musical statement. Our ears need something to hold on to, whether it’s rhythmic, rhy thmic, melodic or harmonic. It’s like having a tree or mountain to break up a boring, flat landscape. Even screaming dissonance is fine - it’s a feature to engage the mind of the listener. listener. With that in mind... target notes! These are notes with a strong connection to the backing. They’re notes that you can play loud and hold for longer because they fit so well. The obvious example is the root note. If you’re playing over a C major chord, hit a C note, and you know you’re safe. There are other possible target notes, depending on the context and musical style, but we’re going to concentrate on three... the root, the 3rd and the 5th. Go back to our C major scale diagram above, and you’ll you’ll see that these notes are C, E and G. These are also the notes used to build a C major chord, so we’re in safe territory.

But if you really want to master a scale, don’t just learn it in comfortable box shapes. It’s also important to be able to see the shape ALONG each string. This also helps you to understand the interval struc ture, as you can see the size of each interval more easily. So here is the C major scale, one string at a time...

MAJOR SCALE SOLOING - BEGINNER JTC MASTERCLASS
SCALE EXERCISES You probably want to dive into the licks and solo now, but do take the time to work on these exercises. Scale diagrams are great for reference, but there’s a risk that you only learn the scale as box patterns. Our aim is to learn the whole fretboard as one BIG scale pattern with no gaps! These exercises take little 1-string, 2-string and 3-string chunks, joining them together, so you get used to moving between shapes. This is another reason why it’s good to work with the linear (one-string) diagrams above... you learn how to move along the strings from one shape to the next. The exercise videos are designed like extended workouts - every thing is played at a fixed tempo, and there are gaps where you can take a deep breath!

MAJOR SCALE SOLOING - BEGINNER JTC MASTERCLASS
MAJOR SCALE SOLOING - BEGINNER JTC MASTERCLASS
BEGINNER LICKS There are 15 short licks in this part of the masterclass. Don’t worry too much about the theory at first - just play through the licks and listen to the sounds. Then start to think about the target notes. Listen to the long notes and figure out what they are. The licks are all played over a static C major backing, so you can hear exactly how each note works against the C root note.
The “Lick Loop” jam track Don’t miss the bonus backing track in this package! This what we used for the 15 licks, and it’s a simpler version of the main solo backing, with just a repeating C major vamp. This is for you to work more on isolating and exploring the sound of each note in the scale. What does the 2nd (D) note of the major scale really sound like? With the Lick Loop jam track running, you can play some licks with lots of sustained D notes, and you’ll hear its character. This is more difficult with chord changes, because every note will have a different function over other chords. That D note is the 2nd of C major, but it’s the root of Dm, the 5th of G major, etc.

MAJOR SCALE SOLOING - BEGINNER JTC MASTERCLASS
MAJOR SCALE SOLOING - BEGINNER JTC MASTERCLASS
SAMPLE SOLO The solo covers all of the concepts that we’ve explored, along with lots of cool new licks for you to learn. To get the most out of the solo, don’t just learn it from start to finish. Pick out your favourite lines, analyse which scale notes are used, look for target notes, tr y playing it over the basic “Lick Loop” backing, so you hear it in a pure C major context without chord changes. Good luck!
