Levels of Consciousness April 7th, 2005 by Steve Pavlina
In the book Power book Power vs. Force by Force by David R. Hawkins, there’s a hierarchy of levels of human consciousness. It’s an interesting paradigm. If you read the book, it’s also fairly easy to figure out where you fall on this hierarchy based on your current life situation. From low to high, the levels of consciousness are: shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger, pride, courage, neutrality, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, j oy, peace, enlightenment. While we can pop in and out of different levels at various times, usually there’s a predominant “normal” state for us. If you’re reading this blog, blog, chances are you’re at least at the level of courage because if you were at a lower level, lev el, you’d likely have no conscious interest in personal growth. I’ll go over these levels in order, mostly mostl y focusing on the ones between courage and reason, since that’s the range ra nge where you’re most likely to land. The labels are Hawkins’. The descriptions of each level are based on Hawkins’ descriptions but blended with my own thoughts. Hawkins defines this as a logarithmic scale, so there are far fewer people at the higher levels than at the lower ones. An increase from one level to another a nother will result in enormous change in your life. Shame – Just – Just a step above death. You’re probably contemplating suicide at this level. Either that or you’re a serial killer. kil ler. Think of this as self -directed -directed hatred.
A step above shame, but you still may be having thoughts of suicide. You think Guilt – A of yourself as a sinner, unable to forgive yourself f or past transgressions. Apathy – Feeling Feeling hopeless or victimized. The state of learned helplessness. Many homeless people are stuck here. Grief – – A A state of perpetual sadness and loss. You might drop down here after losing a loved one. Depression. Still higher than apathy, since you’re beginning you’re beginning to escape the numbness.
– Seeing the world as dangerous and unsafe. Paranoia. Usually you’ll need help to Fear – Seeing rise above this level, or you’ll remain trapped for a long time, such as in an abusive relationship. Not to be confused with setting and achieving goals, this i s the level of Desire – Not addiction, craving, and lust — lust — for for money, approval, power, fame, etc. Consumerism. Materialism. This is the level of smoking and drinking and doing drugs. Anger – the the level of frustration, frustrati on, often from not having your desires met at the lower level. This level can spur you to action at higher levels, or it can keep you stuck in hatred. In an abusive relationship, you’ll often see an anger person coupled with a fear person.
Pride – The The first level where you star t to feel good, but it’s a false f alse feeling. It’s dependent on external circumstances (money, prestige, etc), so it’s vulnerable. Pride can lead to nationalism, racism, and religious wars. Think Nazis. A state of irrational denial and defensiveness. Religious fundamentalism is also stuck at this level. You become so closely enmeshed in your beliefs that you see an at tack on your beliefs as an attack on you.
– The first level of true strength. st rength. I’ve made a previous post about this level: Courage – The Courage is the Gateway. Gateway. This is where you start to see life as challenging and exciting exciti ng instead of overwhelming. You begin to have an inkling of interest in personal growth, although although at this level you’ll probably call it something else like s kill-building, kill-building, career advancement, education, etc. You start to see your future as an i mprovement upon your past, rather than a continuation of the same. Neutrality – This This level is epitomized by by the phrase, “live and let live.” It’s flexible, relaxed, and unattached. Whatever happens, you roll with the punches. You don’t have anything to prove. You feel safe and get along well with other people. A lot of sel femployed people are at this level. A very comfortable place. The level of complacency and laziness. You’re taking care of your needs, but you don’t push yourself yourself too hard.
Now that you’re basically safe and comfortable, you start using your Willingness – Now energy more effectively. Just getting by getting by isn’t good enough enough anymore. You begin caring about doing a good job — job — perhaps perhaps even your best. You think about time management and productivity and getting organized, things that weren’t so important to you at the level of neutrality. Think of this level as the development of willpower and selfdiscipline. These people are the “troopers” of s ociety; they get things done well and don’t complain much. If you’re in school, then you’re a really good student; you take your studies seriously and put in the time to t o do a good job. This is the point where your consciousness becomes more organized and disciplined. Acceptance – Now Now a powerful shift happens, and you awaken to the possibilities of living proactively. At the level of willingness you’ve become competent, and competent, and now you want to put your abilities to good use. This is the level of setting and achieving goals. I don’t like the label “acceptance” that Hawkins uses here, but it basically means that you begin accepting responsibility for your role in the world. world. If something isn’t right about your life (your career, your health, your relationship), you define your desired outcome and change it. You start to see the big picture of your life more clearly. This level drives many people to switch careers, start a new business, or change their diets. Reason – At At this level you transcend the emotional aspects of the lower levels and begin to think clearly and rationally. Hawkins Hawkins defines this as the level of medicine and science. The way I see it, when you reach this level, you become capable of using your reasoning abilities to their fullest extent. You now have the discipline and the proactivity to fully exploit your natural natural abilities. You’ve reached the point where you say, “Wow. I can do all this stuff, and I know I must put must put it to good use. So what’s the best use of my talents?” You take a look around the world and start making meaningful contributions. At the very high end, this is the level of Einstein and Freud. It’s probably obvious that most people never reach this level in their entire lives.
Love – I – I don’t like Hawkins’ label “love” here because this isn’t the emotion of love. It’s unconditional love, a permanent understanding of your connectedness with all that exists. Think compassion. At the level of reason, you live in service to your head. But that eventually becomes a dead end where you fall into the trap of over-intellectualizing. You see that you need a bigger context than just thinking for its own sake. At the level of love, you now place your head and all your other talents and abiliti es in service to your heart (not your emotions, but your greater sense of right and wrong — your your conscience). I see this as the level of awakening to your true purpose. Your motives at this level are pure and uncorrupted by the desires of the ego. This is the level of lifetime service to humanity. Think Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. Albert Schweitzer. At this level you also begin to be guided by a force greater than yourself. It’s a feeling of letting go. Your intuition becomes extremely strong. Hawkins claims this level is reached only by 1 in 250 people during their entire lifetimes.
A state of pervasive, unshakable happiness. Eckhart Tolle describes this state in Joy – A The Power of Now. Now . The level of saints and advanced spiritual teachers. Just being around people at this level makes you feel incredible. At this level life is fully guided by synchronicity and intuition. There’s no more need to set goals and make detailed plans — the the expansion of your consciousness allows you to operate at a much higher level. A near-death experience can temporarily bump you to this level. Peace – Total Total transcendence. Hawkins claims this t his level is reached only by one person in 10 million. Enlightenment – The The highest level of human consciousness, where humanity blends with divinity. Extremely rare. The level of Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus. Even just thinking about people at this level can raise your consciousness.
I think you’ll find this model worthy of reflection. Not only people but also objects, events, and whole societies can be ranked at t hese levels. Within your own life, you’ll see that some parts of your life are at different levels than others, but you should be able to identify your current overall level. You might be at the level of neutrality overall but still be addicted to smoking (level of desire). The lower levels you find within yourself will serve as a drag that holds the rest of you back. But you’ll also find higher levels in your life. You may be at the level of acceptance accept ance and read a book at the level of reason and feel really inspired. Think about the strongest influences in your life right now. Which ones raise your consciousness? Which ones lower it? One thing I like about these levels of consciousness i s that I can trace back over my own life and see how I’ve been moving through them. I remember being stuck at the le vel of guilt for a long time – time – as as a child I was indoctrinated into a belief system where I was a helpless sinner, being judged according to the standards of someone at the l evel of love or higher. From there I graduated to the state of apathy, feeling numb to the whole thing. By high school I had reached the level of pride — I I was a straight-A student, st udent, captain of the Academic Decathlon team, showered with accolades and awards, but I became dependent on them. I hit the level of Courage Courage in my late teens, but the courage was very unfocused, and I overdid it and got myself into all s orts of trouble. I then spent about a year in neutrality and moved through willingness and acceptance during my 20s with a lot of conscious effort. At present I’m at the level of reason and getting closer and closer to completing the leap to love. I experience the state of love more and more
often, and it’s guiding many of my decisions already, but it hasn’t yet st uck as my natural state. I’ve also experienced the state of joy for days at a time, but never with any permanence yet. That state is a pervasive feeling of natural natural euphoria, as if I’m exploding e xploding on the inside with positive energy. It literally literall y forces me to smile. I’ve been in that state for most of this morning, probably because I haven’t eaten anything yet today (I find it easier to hit that state of consciousness when I eat lightly or not at all). We’ll naturally fluctuate between multiple states s tates throughout the course of any given week, so you’ll probably see a range of 3-4 3 -4 levels where you spend most of your time. One way to figure out your “natural” state is to is to think about how you perform under pressure. If you squeeze an orange, you get get orange juice because that’s what’s inside. What comes out of you when you get squeezed by external events? Do you become paranoid and shut down (fear)? Do you you start yelling at people (anger)? Do you become defensive (pride)? What happens to me under pressure is that I become hyper-analytical, but recently I just had a pressure situation where I handled it mostly by intuition, which was a big change for me. This tells me I’m getting getting close to the unconditional love state because in that state, intuition can be effectively accessed even under pressure. Everything in your environment will have an effect on your level of consciousness. TV. Movies. Books. Web sites. People. Places. O bjects. Food. If you’re at the level of reason, watching TV news (which is predominantly at the levels of fear and desire) will temporarily lower your consciousness. If you’re at the level of guilt, TV news will actually raise it up. Progressing from one level to the next requires an enormous amount of energy. I wrote about this previously when discussing quantum leaps. leaps. Without conscious effort or the help of others, you’ll likely just stay at your current level until some outside force comes into your life. Notice the natural progression of levels, and consider what happens happens when you try to short-cut the process. If you try to reach the level of reason before mastering masterin g selfdiscipline (willingness) and goal-setting goal-setting (acceptance), you’ll be too disorganized and unfocused to use your mind to its full extent. If you try to push yourself to the le vel of love before you’ve mastered reason, you’ll suffer from gullibilit y and may end up in a cult. Going up even one level can be extremely hard; most people don’t do so in their entir e lives. A change in just one level can radically r adically alter everything in your life. This is why people below the level of courage aren’t likely to progr ess ess without external help. Courage is required to work on this consciously; it comes down to repeatedly betting your whole reality for the chance to become more conscious and aware. But whenever you reach that next level, you realize clearly clear ly that it was a good bet. For example, when you hit the level of courage, all your past fears and false pride seem silly sill y to you now. When you reach the level of acceptance (setting (sett ing and achieving goals), you look back on the level of willingness and see you were like a mouse running on a treadmill — treadmill — you you were a good runner, but you didn’t pick a direction. I think the most important work we can do as human beings is to raise our individual level of consciousness. When we do this, we spread higher levels of consciousness to everyone around us. Imagine what an incredible world this would be if we could at le ast
get everyone to the level of acceptance. According to Hawkins 85% of the people on earth live below the level of courage. When you temporarily experience the higher levels, you can see where you must go next. You have one of those moments of clarity where you understand that things have to change. But when you sink into the lower levels, that memory becomes clouded. We have to keep consciously taking ourselves back to the s ources that can help us complete the next leap. Each step requires different solutions. I recall when making the shift from neutrality to willingness, I listened to time management tapes almost every day. I immersed myself in sources created by people at the level of willingness until I eventually shifted. But a book on time management will be of litt le use to someone who’s at the level of pride; they’ll reject the very notion with a lot of defensiveness. And time management is meaningless to someone at the level of peace. But you can’t hit the higher levels if you haven’t mastered the basics first. Jesus was a carpenter. Gandhi was a lawyer. Buddha was a prince. We all have to start somewhere. Look at this hierarchy with an open mind and see if it leads you to new insights that may help you take the next leap in your own life. No levels are any more right or wrong than others. Try not to get your ego wrapped up in the idea of being at any particular
level, unless you’re currently at the level of pride of course.
Raising Your Consciousness April 8th, 2005 by Steve Pavlina
Every level of consciousness outlined in the previous post is actually a trap. When you make the leap to a new level, initially everything feels wonderful. You’ve discovered the secret that’s been eluding you all these years. And for a while, your new mindset seems to work just fine. You operate at a whole new level. Problems that seemed like insurmountable obstacles are now nothing but minor bumps in the road. But eventually something screwy starts happening. The same mindset that worked so well for you in the past gradually stops working. The more you try harder and harder to make it work, the worse it fails. As soon as you figure out that your current level of thi nking is actually a trap, this realization is what springs your consciousness up to the next highest level. Consider the level of pride, for example. The trap of pride is that your self-esteem is very fragile — it’s based on your external reality being a certain way. You end up spending more and more time defending that reality. And eventually it cracks. When you realize that defending your fragile pride is a hopeless and pointless battle, you pop up to the level of courage and begin facing your fears for real instead of pretending you’ve already conquered them. But courage is also a trap. Initially it works well, but after a while it gets you into trouble. You become too controlling, spending more and mor e time trying to control what you cannot. Your frustration mounts. As soon as you realize that tr ying to control everything is hopeless, you pop up to the level of neutrality. With neutrality you adopt the belief of “live and let live.” You become more mellow and accepting of people as they are. Life at this level is initially very comfortable. But eventually the trap springs. Your life becomes gradually burdened by things that start to bug you. You complain about them instead of doing something about them, and nothing happens. Things get worse instead of better. You may gain weight, have financial problems, or encounter other frustrations. Procrastination is your way of life. But you can’t solve these problems by hoping and complaining. As soon as you realize that nothing will change unless you get yourself to take action, you raise your consciousness to the level of willingness. And willingness is itself a trap. You’re taking action and developing self -discipline. That works great for a while, but then you start to realize you’re like a mouse on a treadmill. You’re working hard, but you aren’t really getting anywhere. People take advantage of you. You start feeling bitter about investing so much effort for s o little reward. And as soon as you see the trap, you rise t o the level of acceptance. Now you accept responsibility for directing your own life instead of working so hard to achieve others’ goals for you. You set your own goals, make plans, and start achieving
them. You learn to focus your energy. This works great at first, but then you start failing. And failing. And failing. You’re setting goals and working hard, but you don’t really know what you’re doing. You don’t understand the natural laws that are operating in your world. You become frustrated that even less “worthy” people are pass ing you up. Eventually you recognize the trap here — that if you don’t understand the rules of how the world really works, you’ll never be able to succeed at achieving your goals. You rise to the level of reason. Now at the level of reason, you take the time to learn the rules. You become very interested in absorbing new knowledge. When I hit this level, I changed my business model and started thinking very analytically and strategically. I studied s ales and marketing. I did market research. I applied what I learned. And I finally released a hit product. I figured out the rules I needed to follow in order to succeed, and they worked. But the level of reason is also a trap. The more you think, the more you realize that the mind alone, no matter how intelligent and knowledgeable you become, cannot provide the context for your life. It can’t provide purpose or meaning. You can think and think and analyze and analyze, but no amount of data or information can tell you why you’re here and what to live for. You start to feel empty and ask questions like, “Is this all there is?” Your reasoning starts to run you in circles, and you finally see that it ’s a trap. And then you rise to the level of love. And so the cycle continues. The only constants are growth and change. The more you resist learning the lessons that will raise your awareness to the next level, the more pain and frustration you create for yourself. Whenever you reach a new level of awareness, you retain the benefits of the previous levels, but you release their weaknesses. You maintain the confidence of courage without the recklessness, the comfort of neutrality without the passivity, the discipline of willingness without the frustration, the focus of acceptance without the failure, the intelligence of reason without the analysis paralysis. Yesterday afternoon I had a breakthrough of my own. After being at the level of re ason for about 6-1/2 years, I finally reached the level of love. Of that I’m certain. This isn’t the emotion of love — it’s the consciousness of unconditional love. It’s hard to put into words, but part of it is a feeling of total oneness with all that exists. It’s a feeling of being a conduit for life itself, like being part of a much larger whole instead of just an individual ego. For about a year now, I could see the signs that I was getting close to making the leap, but yesterday it finally hit me, and the full awareness of this new level of consciousness flooded into me. I caught my first glimpse of the level of love in 2002. It started with profound flashes of intuition and surges of synchronicity. At first they’d last a few days or a week, but there would be months between these episodes. I’d document them in my journal but otherwise ignore them. But then I got curious and started acting on them in small ways, and I gradually became convinced that there was some higher intell igence working through them. When I started trusting my intuition and these synchronicities more often, their presence in my life swelled, and they’d lead me to new solutions, shreddi ng even the toughest problems far more effectively than reason and logic could. But I still didn’t fully trust them. Eventually though, I was able to let go, and these intuitions a nd
synchronicities switched on permanently and never turned off — now the conduit is always open. It’s going to take me a while to get used to this. First, I have to celebrate though, especially after working so consciously and so hard at this for 6-1/2 years. It was not remotely easy, but it was worth it.
Be Unreactive bro
Unreactive is a negatively defined word and difficult to understand logically. At the same time, Proactive isn't really a satisfying positive definition. I already understand intuitively what it means to be unreactive but I've found a fuller way to describe it. This book, "Power Vs. Force" by David Hawkins is full of weird stuff that I really wonder about but his basic model is very eye-opening. It's called the "Levels of Consciousness". He says there are thought patterns that are reactive (force) and thought patterns that are unreactive/proactive (power). So being unreactive isn't something you do, so much as a SYMPTOM of your disposition towards life.
The exciting thing about this model is less experience is required to become unreactive. The only thing that determines your level of reactivity is your proclivity to hold empowering thought patterns in any given moment. His list is as follows, from destructive to empowering. These are Hawins' labels but I've put my interpretation next to them. Shame
(total self rejection, "I'm not worthy of... that girl", a feeling that everything
you do is cringeworthy, just wanting to die) Guilt
(obligation, "why do I keep doing the opposite of what I should?",
procrastination, self criticism) Apathy
(unpleasant numbness, suppression, pretending to not give a shit what
people think) Grief
(everything is hopeless, "I'm not good enough", life is tragic)
Fear
(focus on potential dangers, "what if...XYZ")
Desire
(craving, neediness)
Anger
("RSD sucks because...")
Pride
(concern with being better than other people, trying hard to be high value,
competition, comparisons, putting other people down) ----------- the line between force and power Courage Neutrality Willingness... Acceptance... Reason
(affirmation, "I can do this", life is opportunity) (everything is cool bro, ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy) (....to get your hands dirty, inspiration, self discipline) (...of the path of Mastery ala George Leonard) (critical thinking, strategy e.g. Robert Greene's books)
Love
(life is easy, gratitude and respect for all life)
Joy
(present in the moment, a sense of wholeness and completion)
Peace
(total loss of self, emptiness, drop in the ocean)
Enlightenment ("return to the market place", the self is now an avatar through which divinity
is expressed, concern is the enlightenment of all) When your orientation is one above the line you are reacting. When your orientation is one below the line you are... not reacting. So according to this, the most powerful (and most unreactive) thought pattern you can hold with women is to lose yourself and hold the intention to enlighten her. See David Deida - "Fuck her open to God, so that she dies in bliss" And from this perspective, game is really the technical details. The logistics of leading her emotionally, socially, physically... Lose yourself and fuck her open to God so she dies in bliss. - SOme douchebag called... fishbulb? Geeze.
Map of Consciousness A Powerful Framework For Your Personal Growth In this article, I’m very excited to share with you the map of consciousness, developed
by Dr. David Hawkins in Power vs Force. This is the same map I alluded to in Are You Sleepwalking Your Life Away? Part 2 post. The reason I’m so excited is because this map is probably the single most powerful tool in your pursuit for personal growth and excellence. There are two reasons why I s ay that: Firstly, having the map of consciousness empowers us in knowing where we stand in our current state of growth . While all of us can try to live consciously every day, without knowing the point we are starting from, we are just r andomly groping in the dark. Having the map gives us a fix on our current location. When we are abl e to identify our starting point, we can then make actionable plans on where we want to go next. Secondly, this map lists all the different levels of consciousness attainable, thus serving as a critical framework for conscious living . Without knowing the highest end state of consciousness we can attain, we can only be making baby steps of progress and not be optimizing our full potential. But having clarity of the different level s of consciousness provides us with the full context of growth. By knowing the other levels ahead, we are more able to comprehend how limiting our current level of consciousness is, what we should be striving toward and the highest end point we can reach. While we can debate on whether Hawkin’s is fully valid or exhaustive, the map definitely provides us a very good reference point to start with. For me, having this map of consciousness has been very helpful in identifying where I currently stand in my pursuit of growth, becoming more conscious of my reactions toward life events and what they represent, understanding the limitat ions of the level I am at and what I should do in order to further up my consciousness.
Consciousness Defined What is consciousness actually? Being conscious is more than just being physically awake. It is also more than just being aware. Awareness typically refers to knowingness at the mental level, while consciousness is a state of knowingness that encompasses all mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of ourselves. To be conscious is to have awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, own existence, sensations, and surroundings.
The consciousness we operate in is actually equivalent to the lens we use to see reality. The perceptions, beliefs, mindsets and values we hold right now are a result of the consciousness we are operating in. Whenever we experience a shift in our consciousness due to an epiphany, an AHA or inner realization, we are actually breaking away from our old consciousness and as a result, old belief systems and attitudes. This is the same as shedding of an old lens we used to see realit y with and adopting of a new lens.
Why Increase Your Consciousness Level? As mentioned above, consciousness is like a lens you use to view reality. Being at a different level of consciousness means you are using a different lens to view the world. Your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values and actions are outputs of the level of consciousness you vibrate at. While the object you are observing (i.e. life, the world, events in your life, yourself) can remain the same, just having a different consciousness level causes those outputs to be widely different. Let’s take an analogy with myopia. If you are at the lowest level, it’s like you have extremely high myopia of -10.00. You can’t see anything beyond an extremely distorted
sense of self worth and the world. At a higher level however, that visual fog lifts and you develop higher clarity on yourself, the world, and your place in the world. Your vision becomes less hazy and more accurate. The higher you go, the higher the clarity your vision on what the world around you entails. All these changes come from just a change in your consciousness; in reality nothing about life or the world has changed. To increase your consciousness level thus translates into a more accurate viewpoint of reality. This allows you to lead the truly happy, full and abundant life which you are meant to experience.
Map Of Consciousness The map of consciousness was developed via kinesiology, or muscle testing. I’ll not be covering the technicalities here; if you are interested in the details, it’s best to check out the book – there are two full chapters dedicated to the explanation of the methodology, testing and interpretation. From this test, a scale of consciousness / energy level was calibrated, from 0 all the way to the highest end of 1000 points. Within this scale, there ar e a total of 17 different levels of consciousness demarcated by different points on the scale. Moving from 0 to 1000 mark a progression in the change of one’s world view from a fear -based consciousness, to a love-based consciousness. The highest attainable level is enlightenment at 1000.
17 Levels of Consciousness Description of Each Level of Consciousness I will provide a description of each level, starting with the bottom-most level. As you read this, think about which level resonates the most with you: 1) Shame (1-20): Someone at this level feels humiliated, has low self esteem, is paranoid. Common expressions where one vibrates at this level would be when one feels like he/she has “lost face”, wishes he/she is invisible, feels worthless. Some individuals at shame react by becoming overly rigid and/or neurotic perfectionists. Vibrating in this level for prolonged periods leads to elimination (of self and others), such as suicide, turning into serial killers, rapists, moral extremists who apply self righteous judgment onto others. The person’s view of life at this sta te is misery. 2) Guilt (30): Feelings of blame and remorse hover here. Used to consciously or subconsciously manipulate conformance to certain forms of thinking and behaviors. Commonly melded by our society with public punishment a nd finger-pointing culture, by religious institutions with preoccupation of “sin” and “salvation”, acts of ritual killing to “appease” higher entities, etc. This level cultivates destruction. Hawkins cites the life-view as evil, which I disagree and feel condemnation is more adept. 3) Apathy (50): A state of despair and helplessness. Someone here is needy and dependent on others for help, such as the homeless, the poor, the aged population. Because this level feels “heavy” and is seen as a burden to others around, many people
usually avoid those who are vibrating at these levels. For example, we see how the poor and unfortunate have come to be shielded away from the mainstream society. We also frequently see situations where the aged is abandoned by their own kin because they are seen as a liability. This level is associated with abdication, which means to give up one’s power to others. The life-view here is hopelessness. 4) Grief (75): Feelings of regret , sadness and loss are abound here. Many people vibrate at this level in times of losses – of loved ones, relationships, possessions, jobs, money, etc. Outcomes would be mourning, remorse, being hung up over what has occurred, etc. Someone at grief sees despondency and bleakness all around the world and in life. The life-view is tragic. Grief is a higher level than apathy, because one starts feeling more energy at this level, albeit of sadness and loss. 5) Fear (100): Energy at this level is oriented in anxiety. Common situations of fear at play would be fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of uncertainty, fear of challenges, fear of aging, fear of death, fear of loss, fear of strangers. This emotion is often played on by marketers and politicians to achieve their agendas. Fear leads to paranoia and can turn into an obsession. At this level, one views everything uncertain as fearful and thus undergoes the state of withdrawal. Thus, fear prevents personal growth from taking place. Someone in the level of fear sees the world as frightening. 6) Desire (125): At the level of desire, the emotion of craving becomes dominant. We have people pursuing money and status as end goals for a better l ife, lonely singles longing to be in romantic relationships believing it will complete themselves, marketers conditioning ‘wants’ in people’s minds through enticing advertisements and promises of happiness with consumption of goods, fashion industry playing on desires for increased attraction, just to name a few.
Addictions are outputs of desire, such as desire for food, video games, fun, sex, shopping, acquisition of money and power, etc. One becomes looped into enslavement at this level, because desire is never-ending emotion. The life-view is disappointing, which ensues when one cannot obtain what one desires. Desire is a higher level than fear because the desire for something propels people forward to action, rather than withdraw to a corner. 7) Anger (150) : The emotion at this level is hate. Anger expresses itself as resentment, frustration and even revenge. Common manifestations of anger in the society are activism toward causes (environmental, animal rights, third-world countries, povertystricken areas), equality, social movements.
At the individual level, examples include irritable and volatile behavior, short-temper. The upside of anger is it has resulted in liberation and great movements in the society; the downside is dangerous behavior and intentional harm might ensue from it. The process one undergoes is aggression. The life-view here is antagonistic, where one is hostile, unfriendly and acts in opposition/rebellion against others. 8) Pride (175): Hawkins cite scorn as the dominant feeling of pride, which I disagree. I feel dignity is an emotion that is more representative of the level; scorn comes a result of this dignity, though it may be too subtle for people to recognize since it is often masked over. At our current society, pride is a level that is encouraged and seen as
positive – for example, pride of being part of a group, institution, company, nation, religion, race. However, this leads to a duality viewpoints, which acts as an invisible force to separate people. For example, nations exist because people identify themselves more with a geographical location rather than the a common, universal identity. Religions exist because people attach themselves to their beliefs of god and values which serve as a separator. On a personal level, people form pride based on possessions and external conditions, and it is vulnerable because such conditions can be removed at any point in time. Pride results in denial and arrogance. At pride, one undergoes inflation (of ego) rather than being able to see things objectively. The life-view here is demanding. 9) Courage (200): Affirmation is the key emotion here. This is the separation point between Power and Force, where one is starts creating change through the use of constructive states of power rather than destructive force. This is the first waking point where one starts to wake from his/her sleepwalker status. At the lower levels before this, the world is seen as hopeless, tragic, frightening, demanding; People from below 200 sees themselves as victims, at the mercy of life and subjected to forces of the external world.
At courage one sees the world as exciting and filled with possibilities. One undergoes empowerment here. This marks the start of active pursuit of growth – where there exists a gap, the person will act to fill it. For example, learning new job skills, embarking on new education, pursuing personal growth. The life-view is feasible – anything is manageable since the person is able to harness power to deal with situations in life. People in the higher levels >200 recognize that their happiness and life lies within them. 10) Neutrality (250): The emotion at this level is trust and safety. Here, people are non-judgmental, objective and able to see things as they truly are. They are not attached to possessions, situations, outcomes and can roll with the punches in lif e. If they are not able to get something, they are equally happy settling for something else.
This is NOT the same as apathy – the power of neutrality comes from a positive place, where one recognizes his/her inner power and abilities and does not feel the need to prove anything to anyone; apathy is rooted from being forsaken in self and the world, resulting in nonchalance and jadedness toward the external world. The process is one of release (of everything), and the life-view is satisfactory, where anything goes. These people are easy to get along; however they are difficult to engage toward causes and visions because they are detached toward everything. 11) Willingness (310): Optimism runs high here. At Willingness, the individual is open to do anything and everything – he/she is not bounded by others’ judgments or by limitations. For example, he/she is willing to take on menial jobs if he/she cannot get jobs elsewhere. The marked characteristic between willingness and levels below is the desire to do things well (for the sake of it), rather than just doing things. Someone at Willingness can readily bounce back from set-backs, is easily moldable and genuinely open to everyone. Success follows them easily.
The process one undergoes here is of intention (to do anything). The life-view is hopefulness. At this level you have people who perform extremely well in their career s in corporations, start-ups; however the question then comes as to whether they are investing their energy in the best way. 12) Acceptance (350): In my opinion, this marks the second waking point for an individual and where he/she is fully awake from his/her sleepwalker stance. Here, one finally realizes that he/she is THE creator and source of his/her life, as opposed to having relegated some part of it to someone else or a different entity. He/she is (1) aware of the social constructs present in one’s life, whether by family, society, nation, religion, work (2) able to discern against (limiting) beliefs, viewpoints and conditioning which he/she is surrounded with and (3) able to consciously craft his/her life above and beyond all these social constructs.
Characteristic behavior at this level will be acceptance vs. rejection, seeking for resolutions vs. judging right or wrong, long-term vs. short-term view, engaging on life harmoniously on its terms vs. resisting it, striving for personal excellence and growth. Forgiveness is the dominant emotion. The process one undergoes is transcendence (above what one faces in life). The life-view here is harmonious. 13) Reason (400): The emotion is understanding and rationality. One seeks out huge amounts of information and analyzes them to infinitesimal detail before reaching conclusions. This is where the noble prize winners, leaders of science and medicine and great thinkers of history calibrate. However, Reason falls into the trap of overintellectualization in concepts and theories. Where differing theories clash and each argument is sound on its own, we reach a blockade, leading to the inabilit y to resolve discrepancies. This leads to the process of abstraction or preoccupation with data. The life-view is meaningful. 14) Love (500): This represents unconditional love – love that is pure, unfaltering, unwavering, not subjected to any external conditions. It is not the same love that is commonly portrayed in mass media, which is rooted in lust, desir e, pride, control, addiction, attraction, jealousy and possessiveness. While the media often establishes love and hates as opposite poles, hate is actually rooted from pride (desire for control/possessiveness), and not actual love. Reverence is the main emotion in the level of (unconditional) love. At this level, duality becomes an illusion; the feeling is one of entirety that rises above separation. Unconditional love is inclusive of everyone and expands beyond self. While reason deals with specific data, love deals with entirety, thus giving rise to the capacity for instanteous understanding. This aspect is often linked with intuition. The process one undergoes is revelation. The life-view is benign, there is no separation, fear or negativity. Hawkin claims only 0.4% of the population (1 in every 250 people) ever reaches this level . 15) Joy (540) : The dominant emotion is serenity and compassion. This is the inner joy that arises from every moment of existence rather than from an external source. This is the level where saints, advanced spiritual students and healers dwell. At this level, one is characterized by enormous patience and an unwavering positive attitude in the face of harsh adversities. The world is seen as one of perfection and beauty. Individuals are
motivated to dedicate themselves to the benefit of life rather than for specific individuals. Here, the process of transfiguration occurs (emanating of radiance from the person). The life-view the individual holds is completeness (of the world). Near death experiences have the effect of temporarily bumping people into this level. 16) Peace (600): The emotion is bliss. At this level, there is no longer any distinction between the observer and the subject. People here become spiritual teachers, great geniuses in their field to effect great contribution for mankind; they typically transcend formal religious structures and replace it with pure spirituality where religions originate from. Perception becomes one of slow motion, suspended in time and space. Everything is perceived as interconnected by an infinite presence. The process one undergoes is illumination; the life-view is perfect. Hawkins claims this level is only attained by 1 out of 10 million people . 17) Enlightenment (700-1000): The emotion is ineffable, in other words – inexpressible. This is the pinnacle of the evolution of consciousness of mankind. The greatest people of history have attained this level, such as Krisna, Buddha, Jesus, Mother Theresa. Here, the body becomes recognized as a tool to project consciousness in. One’s existence becomes all encompassing and transcends time and space. The process is described as pure consciousness . The life-view here is simply ‘ Is‘. In achieving our highest potential and embracing our best lives, we should strive for the highest possible level i.e. enlightenment.
Overview of the Map of Consciousness Below is a map that captures the summary of all 17 levels of consciousness:
Update F eb 7, 2012: Unfortunately, Veritas Publishing demanded that I remove the image and I’ve since taken it off PE. For an organization that tries to preach the concept of Power vs. Force, it surprises me they would resort to forceful threats and solutions (rather than actions that resonate with the “power” levels of consciousness) to achieve their aim. I would have easily removed it if they had simply asked, vs. issuing a email with threats of lawsuits and some pretty heavy and angst-filled words. Still, I wouldn’t let t hat undermine the message of the book — at the end of the day it is more important that we uphold power over force in our daily actions.
About the Figures 1. They are logarithmic, not arithmetic figures What this means is when you see a figure, say 200, it means 10 to the power of 200 (10^200) and not the absolute number 200. Thus, 200 on t he scale does not mean twice the magnitude of 100.
2. A small increment by a few points represents a huge increase in magnitude
For example, let’s look at 100 and 105. Even though it’s just +5 in pts, in logarithmic terms, a +5pt difference represents 100,000 (i.e. 10^5) times the difference in magnitude! This means even if you are in the level of Guilt or Apathy, just raising your consciousness by +5pt will result in enormous improvements in your well being and state of life.
About the levels of consciousness 1. The level of consciousness which you are currently at is a weighted average of the different consciousness levels you operate in A person usually vibrates at a default consciousness level and shifts to a couple of levels below and above that level depending on the situation. Every thought, every feeling and every action you have in every situation is rooted from a particula r consciousness level; all these can be summed up and averaged to identi fy the default level you are in. It is rare someone will maintain an exact same state of consciousness in a given period of time. Even within the same day, you may behave at a certain c onsciousness in this context and at a totally different consciousness in a different context. One influence on your consciousness is the stimulus in your life. This includes the situations you are in, the type of people you spend time with, your environment and so on. In times of pressure, one’s consciousness level usually gets bumped down a few levels. Depending on how the person recovers from the pressure, his or her default consciousness level might be elevated to a higher level after the encounter.
2. One can move across different levels of consciousness Your consciousness level now does not define what your consciousness will be in the future. It is open to change; it is not static. Each person is open to move across diff erent levels, depending on how he/she (chooses to) evolve in his/her consciousness.
3. Distinction of levels of Power vs. levels of Force Hawkins segmented the consciousness into two main categories – one based in force (<200) and one based in power (>200). People in levels of Force vibrate at a level of fear-based emotions. They are more inclined to exert control over others or themselves (oppression, force, coercion, manipulation, violence) to achieve their desired outcomes. For example, crime, war, governmental passing of certain policies, a buse, or even authoritative leadership/parenting styles. People in levels of Power (love, empathy, understanding) vibrate at a level of love-based emotions. They are increasingly aligned with the present moment and universe and use that to bring about their desired results.
4. Each level can be beneficial/detrimental to you depending on the level you are at For example, the state of fear (100) may look quite undesirable if you are at the level of desire (125). However, if you are at the state of guilt (30), being around people at state of fear (100) is actually beneficial for you as it can help elevate you to a higher level. It is generally more effective when you are around people at higher consciousness levels
which are closer to your level (vs. a huge distance ahead), since it is easier for your energy levels to reach resonance with theirs. When the people are too distanced from you in their energies, it may result in detachment and alienation instead. On the same note, when you elevate yourself to a higher level, i t becomes obvious that the lower levels are more limiting. For example, if you are at the level of Pride, you will see how levels of Shame/Guilt/Apathy/Grief/Fear/Desire/Anger bind people down. If you are at the level of Acceptance, you will realize how being at levels of Pride/Courage/Neutrality/Willingness restrain others.
5. At Courage and Acceptance, one experiences a marked leap in the experience of the world An increase in consciousness at any level changes your experience significantly. However, there are two particular levels where one experiences a marked leap vs. the other levels. The first is Courage, which separates the levels of force (<200) from the levels of power (>200). This is the first waking point from the sleepwalker status. The second is Acceptance, where one recognizes it is he and he himself who is the conscious creator of everything in his life. This is the point where one completely awakes from sleepwalking.
Where Does Our World Stand Today? If you are to take a guess, what do you think is the collective consciousness of humanity today? 100? 200? 300? 400? 500? When Hawkins wrote the book in 1995, he calibrated the collective consciousness of our world to be at the level of courage (calibrated 207). As humanity’s consciousnesses has shown to increase only about +5pts every century, 207 is very likely still to be the figure for today. However, this does not mean that the majority of our world is a t the level of courage – in fact, 85% of the world calibrates below coura ge (200). The lower levels of the masses is balanced out by a few individuals near the top (r emember the number is logarithmic, not arithmetic), thus giving us a overall calibrated figure of 207. Just having a few highly conscious leaders walk the earth is capable of raising the overall consciousness of the world – for example, Jesus, Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and so on. Before this, the world’s collective consciousness has been at 190 for many centuries. Why is the figure so low? If we are to look at around at what we see in the world, the answer becomes quite apparent:
1. Over 80% of humanity is living at less than $10/day, under extreme poverty This includes third world countries, war and disaster st ricken areas. Many people here are trapped in states of Apathy (50).
2. Religious teachings and institutions have drastically lowered in consciousness over the years, as they become embroiled with personal agendas of various men and leaders The original teachings of Jesus, Buddha and Krishna calibrated at 1,000. Today, the teachings of Buddhism dropped over the centuries to an average of 900+; Hinduism at 850; Christianity at 750 or even 500 depending on the denominations; militant Islam fundamentalism is at 130 (Desire). In order to kee p members within the religion, many religious leaders turn to Guilt (30) and Fear (100) based te achings toward the members.
3. In first world developed nations, our society is deeply entrenched in states of Fear (100), Desire (125), Pride (175) Fear includes fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of uncertainty. Desire encompasses the insatiable quest for material possessions (wealth and goods), status, power, love, belongingness. Pride takes root from dualistic views such as elitism, competition, nationalism, racial pride, factions, religions, as well as attachment to status/wealth/goods. These are all dominant levels we s ee our society operating in today.
4. Our mass media continually perpetuates levels of pride, desire, fear, or even lower Refer to the below table on the calibrated consciousness of several popular shows (obtained from a Hawkins lecture in 2004). Try examining your favorite shows across the levels of consciousness and see where they are likely to lie.
Passion of Christ: 190 (Pride) Godzilla: 180 (Pride) The Godfather: 155 (Anger) The Matrix: 150 (Anger) American Beauty: 140 (Anger) Terminator: 125 (Desire) The Shining: 55 (Apathy) Silence of the lambs: 45 (Apathy)
What Level of Consciousness Are You At? What level of consciousness are you at? Which level do you find your thoughts and feelings dominating every day? Remember that every thought, every belief, every feeling and every action you have is rooted from the level of consciousness you are in. When you shift your level of consciousness, you also change your world views and mentality.

THE MAP OF CONSCIOUSNESS – HAWKINS’ SCALE
Introduction On our journey throughout life we find ourselves met by all kinds of people and all kinds of situations and experiences. Our ability to learn and grow from these experiences is based largely on our ability to discern truth from falsehood. It has been demonstrated over the eons that the human mind is incapable of discer ning truth as the stunning evidence of pain and suffering mounts, not only at the individual level but also at the level of entire civilizations. Dr. David R. Hawkins, MD, PhD has created a tool that he calls the Map of Consciousness. This map was developed to overcome the inherent limitation of the human mind, whereby falsity has been misidentified as truth. His ultimate goal “is a connecting of the dots so that the hidden p icture emerges. The hope is that this work might undo the very sources of pain, suffering, and failure, and assist the evolution of human consciousness in each of us to rise to the level of joy that should be the essence of each and every human being’s ex perience”. (1)
Background The Map of Consciousness was created by Dr. David Hawkins, a psychiatrist, who experienced several life-altering events throughout his life. Following each event, he noticed a change in his state of consciousness from an ego-based/ mind focus to a completely overwhelming state of overpowering bliss where he felt a constant, steady connection with the “Presence”. With this dramatic change in his level of consciousness, he decided that he must pursue the reason why it had changed and how he could describe the changes to help mankind in the pursuit of enlightenment. His driving desire was to “address the causes of the endless stream of spiritual distress and human suffering”.(2)
History The Map of Consciousness is a numerical scale whereby one can measure positive from negative, power from force and truth from falsehood. Dr. Hawkins believes that every word, every thought, and every intention creates what is called a morphogenetic field, or attractor field, and that these energy fields can be measured by a very simple process. This process is a well-established science known as Kinesiology. Kinesiology is defined as the study of muscles and their movements, especially as applied to physical conditioning. The study of kinesiology first gained scientific attention from the work of Dr. George Goodheart, who pioneered the specialty he called Applied Kinesiology, after finding that benign physical stimuli such as beneficial vitamin and mineral supplements would increase the strength of certain indicator muscles, whereas hostile stimuli would cause those muscles to suddenly weaken.
In the late 1970s, Dr. John Diamond refined this specialty into Behavioral Kinesiology where indicator muscles would strengthen or weaken in the presence of positive or negative physical, emotional and intellectual stimuli. Dr. Hawkins’ research took Dr. Diamond’s technique several steps further, by discovering that this kinesiologic response conveys man’s capacity to differentiate not only positive from negative stimuli, but also anabolic from catabolic, and very dramatically, truth from falsity. The Map of Consciousness reflects millions of calibrations of statements, thoughts, photos, art, music, influential world leaders in every discipline and in almost every area of human endeavour. The research carried on for over 20 years to come up effectively with an anatomy of consciousness that reflects the entire human condition.
Methodology The Kinesiological test can use either one or two persons. Step 1
When using the Two Person Method, one person stands while holding one arm out laterally, parallel to the ground. The second person, faces the first person and presses down firmly and quickly with two fingers on the first subjects ext ended wrist, while saying “resist” (against the downward pressure). This is done to test the spring in the arm. When the muscle can “lock” the shoulder joint against t he push, a “strong” response is noted. If it fails to “lock” a “weak” response is noted. Occasionally, there are some people who are not able to resist in any manner the pressure on their wrist, and Dr. Hawkins explains that it may be due to having a negative health condition or perhaps due to exposure to weakening energy fields. Step 2
It is important to keep the testing situation impersonal – refrain from smiling, personal comments, free from noise, music or any distractions for either party. Eyeglasses and all other metal objects must be removed from each subject, including jewelry (rings, bracelets and necklaces). Hats also alter the results so they must also be removed. To improve concentration, have the test subject close their eyes. Step 3
If a subject repeatedly goes weak, the examiner’s voice should be evaluated using other test subjects. Step 4
The trial run: The test subject is asked to think of someone they love, while the tester presses down on their wrist, firmly and quickly. A normal subject will go quite strong and be able to easily resist the pressure. Next, have the person think of someone they hate, fear or resent. A normal subject will go very weak and be unable to resist the downward pressure on their wrist. Do a series of tests to establish a consistent response. Some examples of predictable responses include the following:
Test Weak
Test Strong
Hate………………………………………………………………………..Love Swastika………………………………………………………………….American Flag Joseph Stalin…………………………………………………………….Mahatma Ghandi Gangster Rap music……………………….. ……………………….Classical music
Step 5
After it is established that the test subject reacts reliably and is in a normal state, proceed with the topic under investigation by making declarative statements. Questions should always be posed as a declaration of fact; Always preface the investigation with this statement, “I have permission to make an inquiry into ___________________(the specific topic).” (Y/N) The statement may be made by either the questioner or the test subject. Each time a question is stated, the test subject is told to resist and the tester presses down quickly with two fingers on the test subject’s extended wrist. So, as an example of a two person test: Statement: “On a scale of 1 to 1,000 with 1 being the lowest level of truth and consciousness and 1,000 being the highest level of truth and consciousness, this article measures at level 200 (Y/N); at 300 (Y/N); at 400 (Y/N) and so on, and can even be refined right down to the exact number if that is what the tester wishes. As soon as the arm “breaks”and loses its strength, the number is immediately known to be below the number where the arm has gone weak. For the One Person Method, the tester makes an “ O” ring with the thumb and forefinger of each hand. One “O” ring from one hand is placed inside the “O” ring of the other hand. The tester then firmly holds the rings closed and tries to break the link by pulling on one side. For example, if the tester is right-handed, the left “O” ring is held strong at all times and the ring on the right hand becomes the one that will stay strong or break according to the statement tested. The right hand on a right-handed individual offers more sensitivity when assessing strength versus weakness. If one is left-handed, the left hand would afford a more accurate assessment of whether the test is “strong” or “weak”. When the results are “true”, the “O” is strong and it’s difficult to pull the thumb and forefinger apart. A “no” makes them quite weak and the “O” is easy to separate. This method takes a lot of testing to create the reliability and accuracy of the results. The same principles apply in terms of making the environment quiet and removing jewelr y, especially rings and watches. An example of a One Person Test: Statement: “On a scale of 1 to 1,000 with 1 being the lowest level of truth and consciousness and 1,000 being the highest level of truth and consciousness, this article measures at level ____” : The tester “pulls” BY COLUMN, starting with the Hundreds column, then moving to the Tens column, and finally to the Ones column. When starting with the Hundreds column, the tester will COUNT the pulls, until the ring breaks. The number BELOW where the ring breaks is the final number. For example, if it breaks at 9, then the number 8 is the correct number for the Hundreds column [8 – ]. The tester then moves on to the Tens column and starts pulling again, starting at number 1 and moving up to 9; if the ring breaks at 8, then the
“true” number is 7 [87-]; and the same procedure is done in the one’s column. If the r ing breaks at 4, then the “true”number is 3 [873]. Let’s say you want to see if this article measures at level 200. If the article does not measure at 200, then each “pull” in EACH COLUMN, will break (= “Not True”) Remember, you are measuring the truth of the Statement. For example the tester counts each “pull” of the ring – If the article measures at 500, then the “Truth” is that the article does not measure at level 200. This can require a lot of time to narrow down the actual level, and some time can be s aved by asking if the article measures BETWEEN two chosen levels, such as “BETWEEN 500 and 550” for example. And if the article measures between these two numbers then the tester will get a high reading such as 800 or higher; (ie Hundreds column:one (doesn’t break = “strong”), two (doesn’t break = strong), three (doesn’t break = strong) and right on up through nine where it will then break: this equals 800. The ten’s column may break anywhere from 1 through 9, and same with the one’s column. The answer of 800 plus tells us that it is TRUE, the article measures between 500 and 550. This method allows a person to test st atements on their own for quick results but requires a lot of practice to get reliable results! Another way to phrase the statements would be to say “In the name of the highest good, _________calibrates as true. Over 100. Over 200,” etc. By asking “in the highest good” we are going to increase the accuracy because this rises above self-serving motives and personal interest. ALL testers and test subjects alike must each calibrate over 200 in order to obtain accurate responses. Any measurement at or above 200 is considered “True” and any measurement below 200 is considered to be “Not True”. MAP OF THE SCALE OF CONSCIOUSNESS (Please zoom to get the ideal table design)

Application The Kinesiological Test cannot be used to foretell the future; otherwise there are no limits as to what can be asked. Consciousness has no limits in space or time. The answers do not depend upon the belief systems of either the tester or the test subject. Consciousness knows only truth because only truth exists in reality. It does not respond to falsehood because falsehood has no existence in reality. It will not respond to non-integrity questions nor those that are ego-based. A good example of this t ype of questioning would include asking which Stock to buy, and so on.
The critical point between positive and negative, between true and false, or between constructive and destructive is at the calibrated level of 200. This scale is a logarithmic progression. Therefore, the level of 300 is not twice the amplitude of 150; it is 10 to the 300th power. An increase of even a few points is indicative of a major advance in power.
Levels Below 200 The lower levels of consciousness include Shame, Guilt/Hate, Apathy, Grief, Fear, Desire, Anger and Pride. These levels are the most painful that we experience and it is the pain that these levels create that drive us in our desire for understanding and inner growth. Perhaps it is not our full intention to grow, spiritually, but this becomes the result after much inner reflection and discussion. These levels are dominated by falsehood. Dr. Hawkins describes these lower levels of consciousness as ego dominated life where one thrives on the techniques and emotions of animal survival. These are aligned with pleasure, predation and gain. Below the 200 level, an individual is left-brain dominant (in right-handed people), which means that input goes directly to the am ygdala (almond), so emotional response is triggered before intelligence and cognition. From this orientation, others are seen as objects or means to personal survival.
Calibration levels 200 – 500 Linear Mind In human consciousness, there is a huge transition at the level of 200 where right brain dominance (in right-handed people) reflects the increasing influence of spiritual energy and a reliance now on Power rather than Force. At this point, input is fast-tracked directly to the pre-frontal cortex and the emotional centre. This influence brings progressive awareness and openness to the energy of love. These levels include Courage, Neutrality, Willingness, Acceptance, and Reason. These levels also increasingly align with truth. The level 500-599 is a defining level of love where it is not just a feeling but a principle to live one’s life by. Only 4 percent of the worlds population reaches the level of ‘500’ and only 0.4 percent reach level ‘540’. Dr. Hawkins has created charts which engage the reader in considering alternate possibilities to awareness. By simply reading these charts one is shown a point of view from the “other side”. The effect is in increasing awareness of one’s own positions and how some character “defects” will actually subside as soon as they are recognized and owned. Congratulations! Your level of consciousness has risen as you have read this article. As new ideas push the morphogenetic field outward, new attractor fields are built, breaking through old thought forms and beliefs driven by force and new belief systems are created. As more of us think about this topic and these considerations, larger and larger fields are created. As we share this information with others, we are in turn creating ever larger M-fields, breaking the bonds of Force and Falsehood and engaging Power and Truth. You have surely assisted in the learning process b y increasing your level of consciousness and therefore the advancement of Humanity. This moment in our evolution is one that requires discernment as w e effectively identify issues that represent Truth and those that are heavy with deception. We are awakening to the truth that the failures of our institutions are a result of the implementation of FORCE and as we have learned from this research, anything that is based on force, is disconnected from Source. Humanity has grown accustomed to the illusion of isolation and separation. Dr. Hawkins has proven through the power in kinesiology, that there is a connection between the two universes, the physical and the mind and spirit. He states “ in a world full of sleepers lost from their source, here was a tool to recover that lost connection with the higher reality and demonstrate it for all to see”. (3) We are all connected to the Source.

A quick interpretation of the last five questions: The combined level of consciousness of the group is 315, the same level as the statement that Mr. Martinez read, so they probably did write it. I feel that they got him to read it because he has a higher level of consciousness and that is what one picks up on in the interview. Perhaps they hope that by having it delivered by someone of a higher consciousness level (i.e.“he comes across l ike a nice, honest guy”) it is somehow more truthful or sincere. If they had interviewed someone with a consciousness level of 315, we would probably sense elements of force and deception. Overall I feel that this group wishes to simply maintain control of the population by creating a common currency. Look, it’s just more of the same.
In Conclusion: Remember, The Map of Consciousness test takes a lot of practice to create a reliable result. Ultimately, a number value itself is not as important as being able to discern Power over Force (sometimes easier to see than Truth over Falsehood). In time, you will recognize how these ideas “feel” to you. You will find yourself using a combination of how you might “feel” about something, and combine it with what you intuit about a situation. As you begin to trust in your own inner knowing, you will be able eventually to discern truth from falsehood very quickly and easily. You will finally master the Art of Discernment. For this is the year of TRUTH. Enslavement by illusion is comfortable; it is the liberation by Truth that people fear.
Straight and narrow is the path… Waste no time. Gloria in Excelsis Deo! David R. Hawkins References

History of Carla’s Article on Hawkins Scales As you may remember, in December 2011 a question was raised by one of the members of the PAT concerning the application of the Hawkins Scale in assessing the levels of spiritual evolution and the truthfulness of human statements. At that time I had not heard anything about the pioneer work of Dr. Hawkins. Subsequently, I was made aware of his research by Rob and Carla as published in the ascension reports in December 2011. When I learnt from Carla that she has been using this scale for a long time and has collected a lot of expertise and practical experience with it, I asked her to prepare a publication on this topic for our readers and members of the PAT. The idea was for you to apply this scale and test the truthfulness and validity of the many statements you read in Internet regarding the End Times, and which most often give you rather confusing information. Many readers approach me personally everyday and ask me to validate a video or an article published on Internet with respect to its truthfulness. Of course, I do it it my way, based on the principles of axiomatic truthfulness of the Universal Law, but here you have a more simple and accurate test to check the reliability of the information you avidly read in Internet by yourself. In the coming days we will experience a huge peak in human confusion, as I predicted in my gnostic book for the End Times (see l ast serial-6). Any scientific proven tool that you may employ to check your realit y will be thus of great value and importance for your personal discernment in the upcoming difficult times. I personally learned a lot from this excellent and didactically perfectly presented elaboration by Carla on the basics of Hawkins research, which is indeed unique in the field of applied spiritual psychology. I hope that you can also learn a l ot from Carla’s article, which follows the established tradition of this website to present sophisticated scientific topics and solutions in a perfect didactic manner as to reach all readers who are on their search for spiritual truth and growth. I am personally very grateful to Carla for her accomplishment and hope that you will also appreciate her theoretical contribution to a better discernment of human and cosmic truth, which is in the core of our ascension process.
power vs. force March 20th, 2013 | Life, Think About It
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about motivation as it relates to intentions in our lives. The book Power vs. Force by David R. Hawkins has introduced me to a very interesting concept regarding motive, paradigms, and power. Though I am skeptical of many of the scientific elements he brings to the table, I have been fascinated by the spiritual ideas. In the book, Mr. Hawkins suggests that the way we view and interact with the world relates to a specific level of consciousness. He believes we often stay within the same consciousness level most of our lives, but I personally believe that we may jump between these levels depending on our mood, experiences, and spiritual growth. Mr. Hawkins describes the following levels.
The levels in coral depict those which use power. Operating from one of these levels creates an effortless pull of good things, situations, and opportunities to you. Meanwhile, the levels in gray demonstrate the levels of force, according to Mr. Hawkins. Force levels require you to go out there and ‘take’ the good things, situations, and opportunities that you’d like. It all boils down to a “push” vs. “pull” way of liv ing and being. At first glance, this may either seem amazing or a little too woo-woo. Regardless of the concept’s abstract nature, I’ve found some tangible, “spiritually practical” ways to implement these ideas with great results in my own life. Lately, whenever I’m faced with a difficult personal conflict, business decision, or other mental quandary, I now try to determine which level I’m currentl y operating from. Chances are, if I’m having a conflict, I’m looking at the circumstances from a gray, forceful level. Coming up with a solution for the problem on the same, or nearby gra y level, will still leave me frustrated and at a standstill. However, when I pause and ask myself: “At what level would I need to look at this situation in order to find peace and a new solution?”
… A new way of being, thinking, and feeling emerges. Is it always easy to remove the emotions tying me to the gray level I was previously operating in? Honestly, no. [Intermission….] In fact, funny story… I just had “a situation” occur in the middle of writing this post. Yep, about one minute ago I spilled my coffee out of the blue onto my new MacBook Pro (which means I’m now typing this portion of the post on Mr. Lively’s super old laptop). I easily could have felt angry about the unforeseen setback , guilty about my clumsiness , and afraid that it might do some real damage. But thanks to writing this post, I immediately was reminded of the power le vels. Heck, I just needed to look at my screen rather than the coffee puddles to find that I needed to rise to the level of acceptance in order to find the peace about the situation.
I can accept that I will spend the rest of the day doing work from this different computer and be thankful that I have a computer to work on at all. I can also accept that I will find out if any serious damage has been done when Mr. Lively gets home to investigate. So there you go. Though the idea of consciousness levels might be a bit “out there” for some, but it can really be useful. Especially if you spill coffee on your laptop.
David Hawkins Introduction to David Hawkins
David Hawkins (or David R. Hawkins) is a psychiatrist who not only tackled years of clinical experience, but has conducted extensive research. His career spans from 1952 when he earned his MD from The Medical College of Wis consin (established as Marquette University School of Medicine). In 1995, he also earned his PhD. in Philosophy from Columbia Pacific University. In his lifetime, he has founded and led several research laboratories and clinics. Levels of Consciousness in "Power VS Force"
The most well known publication of Dr. Hawkins is "Power VS. Force - The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior" (Hawkins, 2002). In the book, Hawkins extrapolates a hierarchical model of personality development. Hawkins argues that t he personality can be described in a scoring system which ranges from 0 to 1000 (0 being the lowest score, 1000 being absolute enlightenment or pure awareness) (Hawkins 2002, 75-85). It is of interest to note that Hawkins argues that objective truth is not only existant, but may be reached and understood by any individual using a technique called kinesiology. By accessing the "Database of Consciousness," an individual may have questions answered with 100% certainty. His research shows that results are repeatable and accurate (Hawkins 2002, 29-30), regardless of the individual who performs the kinesiologic testing. Each energy level outlined by Hawkins is extrapolated in the book. These levels of consciousness permeate the individual's entire perspective and dictate the way they relate to their life experiences. For Hawkins, moving upward into higher states of consciousness is the only way to make meaningful progress in one's life. Sadly, the average individual only moves up 5 points in their entire lifetime. However, a focused effort to move into higher states can lead to incredible leaps of awareness in relatively short periods of time. Individuals will fluctuate between differ ent points on the scale, but an overall average number can be calculated using kinesiological testing. Briefly, here are the energy levels outlined by David Hawkins:
20: Shame 30: Guilt 50: Apathy 75: Grief 100: Fear 125: Desire 150: Anger 175: Pride 200: Courage 250: Neutrality 310: Willingness 350: Acceptance 400: Reason 500: Love
540: Joy 600: Peace 700-1000: Enlightenment
Although Hawkins goes into great detail about the various levels of consciousness, he points out two turning points as most crucial. "On our scale of consciousness, there are two critical points that allow for major advancement. The first is at 200, the initial level of empowerment: Here, the willingness to stop blaming and accept responsibility for one's own actions, feelings, and beliefs arises - as long as cause and responsibility are projected outside of oneself, one will remain in the powerless mode of victimhood. The second is at t he 500 level, which is reached by accepting love and nonjudgemental forgiveness as a lifestyle, exercising unconditional kindness to all persons, things, and events without exception." (Hawkins 2002, 238). These two thresholds are primary challenges for many individuals today. Moving beyond them represents a significant barrier which can only be overcome through a significant shift in personality. After moving beyond these realms, progression into increasingly higher states is very natural and less challenging. Measuring Collective Consciousness
Through kinesiological testing, David Hawkins and his researchers estimate the energy state of humanity's collective consciousness to sit around 207 (Hawkins 2002, 95). This is just above the 200 threshold, in which we move from an overall destructive force to an overall creative force on the planet. Therefore, Hawkins is very optimistic about the progress being made. However, Hawkins warns that "Any meaningful human satisfaction cannot commence until the level of 250, where some degree of selfconfidence begins to emerge as a basis for positive life experiences in the evolution of consciousness." (Hawkins 2002, 96). Counterbalancing Lower States of Consciousness
Individuals in states below 200 are explained as counterproductive to society. Their actions, in general, cause more harm than good. Furthermore, Hawkins warns that more than 85% of humans alive today still calibrate below the critical 200 level threshold (Hawkins 2002, 95). This is not surprising given that the majority of humanity still lives in extreme poverty, in which development of consciousness is nearly impossible. The reason that our collective score sits at 207 is because the scale is logarithmic. Individuals who maintain higher states of awareness counterbalance large numbers of minds in lower states. Although only 4 percent of people alive today have reached the critical energy field of 500, individuals in these states have extremely powerful influence on the well being of society as a whole. In fact, Hawkins points out that only .4 percent of the population reaches 540, and only 1 in 10 million people will ever reach the level of 600 (Hawkins 2002, 95). He also points out that there are currently 12 persons on the planet who calibrate at 700 (Hawkins 2002, 282).
To gain perspective of the power of individuals who reach higher states - and it emphasize the importance of our individual capacity to reach thes e higher states Hawkins lays out the mathematics (Hawkins 2002, 282):
One individual at 700 counterbalances 70 million individuals below level 200 One individual at 600 counterbalances 10 million individuals below level 200 One individual at 500 counterbalances 750,000 individuals below level 200 One individual at 400 counterbalances 400,000 individuals below level 200 One individual at 300 counterbalances 90,000 individuals below level 200 Twelve individuals at 700 equals one avatar at level 1000
Because of the logarithmically increasing power of individuals at higher states of consciousness, humanity has finally reached a level above the critic al threshold of 200. Hawkins stresses that each person has the capacity to have significant influence on the well being of society by prioritizing progression of their individual consciousness. David Hawkins and Attractor Fields
Rather than simply affecting events on the linear physical level, Hawkins (Hawkins 2002, 46-53) argues that alignment with "attractor fields" is a much more wise approach to accomplishing peak performance in one's life. While there is no doubt that Newtonian physics accurately describes events as happening in a sequential fashion, Hawkins argues that this is a gross oversimplification of the way we interact with the environment. Physics correctly predicts the following: A->B->C Hawkins argues that underlying this physical chain of events are fundamental forces which can be amplified in one's life. In other words, awareness upon the attractor field [ABC] necessitates A->B->C. The entiret y of Hawkins' work can be conceptualized as an effort to encourage others to align themselves with powerful attractor fields which necessitate positive outcomes. Entertaining higher attractor fields is a natural corequisite to personality development and progression into higher states of consciousness. Indeed, our attitudes will change as we embrace dif ferent attractor fields. He describes the attractor fields as the determinants of human behavior (the subtitle of his book on the topic). David Hawkins: Power VS Force
A person who is powerful engages from the level of higher attract or fields. Their lives are lived in synchronicity and joy, their work is effortless and fruitful, and their success is continuous and always growing. Again, entertaining higher energy fields progresses the personality on both the level of individual awareness and external success. As the individual moves into higher states of consciousness, they embrace power over force as the means to accomplish their goals. "Power is associated with that which supports the significance of life itself. . . Power appeals to what uplifts, dignifies, and ennobles. Force must always be just ified, wheras
power requires no justification. Force is associated with the partial, while power is associated with the whole. . . Because force automatically creates counter-force, its affect is limited by definition. We could say that force is a movement - it goes from here to there (or tries to) against opposition. Power, on the other hand, is still. It's like a standing field that doesn't move. Gravity itself, for instance, doesn't move a gainst anything. It's power moves all objects within its fie ld, but the gravity itself does not move." "Force always moves against something, whereas power doesn't move against anything at all. Force is incomplete and therefore has to be fed energy constantly. Power is total and complete in itself and requires nothing from outside. It makes no demands; it has no needs. Because force has an insatiable appetite, it constantly consumes. Power, in contrast, energizes, gives forth, supplies, and supports. Power gives life and energy force takes thes away. We notice that power is associate with compassion and makes us feel positively about ourselves. Force is associated with judgement and makes us feel poorly about ourselves." "Force always creates counterforce; its effect is to polarize rather than unify. Polarization always implies conflict; it's cost, therefore, is always high. Because force incites polarization, it inevitably produces a win/lose dichotomy; and because somebody always loses, enemies are created." (Hawkins 2002, 132-133) Here, we can see that a person who lives in lower states of awareness is caught in endless cycles of fruitless labor. Surface level, superficial accomplishments may come to pass, but there is no real intrinsic reward and inner happiness is never achieved. This is the unfortunate result of engaging reality from lower attractor fields. Rather than harnessing the true "power" of higher states of consciousness and elevated attractor patterns, an individual continuously uses "force" to endlessly fight external circumstances from lower states. Although the effort might be significant in terms of the physical and psychological exertion associated with forceful work, no meaningful progress can be made until the individual engages higher attractor patterns. Societal development is only possible as an increasingly large portion of individuals embrace higher attractor patterns and can therefore support each other in moving into higher states. The natural consequence of embracing power over force is development of consciousness. The Intellect
Although intellectualism can only occur in relatively higher states of awareness (in the 300s and 400s), its power is limited. "The achievements of pure reason are the great landmarks of cultural history. They've made man the master of his external environment; and to some degree, on the physical plane, of his internal environment. But reason has its limits, in more ways that one: The intellectual brilliance of the 400 level, so dazzling and enviable to those in the 300s, quickly pales for those who have transcended it. From a higher perspective, its all too clear how tedious and trivial reason's infatuation with itself can become. Reason is the
mirror of the mind's vanity; ultimately, there are few things more boring than to observe self-admiration." (Hawkins 2002, 268) Hawkins returns to this topic later in the book: "Contrary to its delusions of grandeur, the intellect not only lacks the ability to recognize falsehood, but it also grossly lacks the necessa ry power to defend itself, even if it had the capacity for discernment. . . And it's clear from the common human conduct that even if the intellect could reliably arrive at this basic conclusion, it still lacks the power to stop the effect of negative fields. We remain unconscious of the causes of our afflictions while the intellect dreams up all kinds of plausible excuses, hypnotized by these same forces. Even when a person intellectually knows his behavior is self destructive, this knowledge has no necessary deterrent effect whatsoever; intellectual recognition of our addictions has never given us the power to control them." (Hawkins 2002, 287) Athleticism and Higher States of Consciousness
Hawkins notes that sport provides a clear example of the difference between power and force. Many athletes remain within the level of pride and view their marginal success as a result of strictly individual will, hard work, and dedication. In other words, they consider themselves to be great, rather than seeing their success as a natural manifestation of elevated attractor patterns - which is the result of the development of both individual and collective consciousness: "The most highly developed martial arts clearly demonstrate how motive and principle are of ultimate importance in extraordinary athletic achievement. The most frequently heard admonition to trainees is: "Stop trying to use force." Schools devoted to these arts produce masters whose oeverriding concern is voctory fot the higher self over the lower thorugh control, training, and commitment to goals aligned with true power. Alignment iwht these high-power attractor patterns isn't limited to the exercise of the discipline itself but becomes an entire lifestyle. Thus, when the power of the principle is transferred to the practitioner, the results begin to be manifested everywhere in his life." "The hallmark of true greatness in athletic achievement is always humility (such as that exhibited by Pablo Morales after winning his gold medals in the 1992 Summer Olympics). Such athletes express gratitude, inner awe, and an awareness that their performance wasn't merely the result of an individual effort - that maximum personal effort brought them to the breakthrough pint from which they were transported by a power greater than that of the individual self. This typically is expressed as the discover of some aspect of the self hitherto unknown, or unexperienced in its pure form." (Hawkins 2002, 174)
