As I was drafting my Personal Lifelong Learning Plan (PLLP), I realized that being a teacher is not that easy. Gone were the days that teachers come to school with just Lesson Plans and “Bitay - Max” on their hands. Gone were the days that the teachers do all the talking. Gone were the days that teachers monopolize being the source of knowledge. Being a 21 st Century teacher is a no – nonsense job. It requires knowledge, skills, right attitude and good values to adapt to the rapid educational changes brought by the modern times. Designing PLLP is a good assessment tool to self-evaluate my strengths and weakness as a 21 st century teacher. I was able to know my level of competencies in the different literacies and there I discovered that I have more to improve. I have more things to discover and enhance because learning does not cease even to educators like us. I also realized that 21 st century education is geared to produce globally competent learners and teachers as well. 21st century education needs 21 st century teachers to teach 21 st century learners. Therefore, we must keep pace with our learners so as not to become obsolete teachers, teachers who cannot adapt to this generation will eventually lose his/her essence of being a teacher. Learners of today are different from learners of yesterday. Different strokes for different folks. They are more inquisitive, more outspoken and more eager to put their hands on the cauldron of learning. They need competent “cooks” like us so as not to spoil the freshness of minds.
As a 21st century teacher, we should practice facilitative teaching, where we lead our students to learn on their own, to generate more ideas and knowledge and become a collaborative source of knowledge among their peers. Lastly, we should also try to involve our colleagues and other community members to help produce holistic learners. Let us all help build strong community ties for us to sustain life-long learning because learners are not just our students but also us teachers and other community members. Let us all try to become a 21 st century teacher and 21 st century learner in us. This PLLP will be my motivator to become a 21 st century teacher. I appreciate SEAMEO because of this kind of assignment… it confirms my competence to the 21 st century literacies and it also reminds me to do well for those literacies I am not so good at.
The following are the collected MOVs as proof for the self-assessment I made for the level of competencies I developed. This literacy can be manifested in creative ways of problem-solving and expressed through the production of various art works. Teachers and students need to be m ore adept in the arts and manifest creativity in various activities.
This entails acquiring knowledge about climate change, pollution, loss of natural habitats and biodiversity as well as the impacts of environmental problems on human lives. Moreover, solutions on how these environmental problems could be addressed must also be practiced. Teache rs and students need to develop awareness of the environment.
This competency is based on the reality that societies and workplaces have now become more information-driven. Workplaces of the 21st century rely heavily on electronic (digital) forms of data storage and management as well as in the area of communications. Teachers and students need to develop familiarity and skills in the use of computers, the internet and other information technologies.
Teachers and students are expected to be knowledgeable about the basics of economics and financial management. This way, you as a teacher, can extend the skill into livelihood activities, entrepreneurship, and wise handling of personal finances.
Teachers and students are expected to be knowledgeable and skilled in the area o f communications particularly the media. Teachers and students must learn how to discern news and information based on the form and content as to how these information are transmitted via various forms of me dia. (printed, tv, radio, internet and from right re source persons)
You and your students need to acquire social skills that are attuned to the norms of your current society. Emotional intelligence must also be developed to be able to effectively manage the stresses o f a fast-paced 21st century society.
You and your students need to develop a c ulture of respect for cultural diversity. There is value in having a perspective as a global citizen whose local actions can have an impact on the wider global arena. You also have to understand how world events may also affect you and your community at the local level.
