Jika dibandingkan dengan kabupaten/kota di wilayah propinsi Jawa Barat, Kota Bandung merupakan wilayah dengan penduduk tebesar keenam di Jawa Barat setelah Kabupaten Bogor, Kabupaten Bandung, Kabupaten Bekasi, Kota Bekasi, dan Kabupaten Garut. Dalam wilayah Bandung Raya, jumlah penduduk Kota Bandung merupakan wilayah dengan penduduk terpadat kedua setelah Kabupaten Bandung. Pertumbuhan penduduk di Kota Bandung tahun 2015 termasuk rendah jika dibandingkan dengan kabupaten Kota lain, yaitu 0.43%. IPM Kota Bandung merupakan IPM tertinggi di wilayah Jawa Barat.
