How to get started with Jolly Phonics in the frst year of teaching.
Teaching with Jolly Phonics begins with learning the 42 letter sounds. As the programme progresses, the other 4 key skills are taught. Once children have learnt the letter sounds and some tricky words they can then begin to use the Jolly Phonics decodable readers and learn the alternative ways that vowels can be written.
How does Jolly Phonics work? By teaching 5 basic skills Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the ve key skills for reading and writing.
Letter Sound Order Jolly Phonics teaches the letter sounds in 7 groups of 6 sounds. The 42 sounds are taught in a specic order (not alphabetically). The rst group has been chosen as it makes more simple three-letter words than any other 6 letters. This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

3. Blending Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.
4. Identifying the sounds in words Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.
5. Tricky words Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.
After a year of Jolly Phonics Zakee was able to write this piece of mainly unaided work. • Zakee is 5 years old • He is an average student • English is Zakee’s second language
