Jazz Area Trombone Audition Materials (loosely based on materials from Perc from Percolating olating , composed by Russell Schmidt) A
Additional audition requirements for participation in Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Repertory Ensemble may include the following: 1) Major and minor scale performance (ascending/descending, two octaves where possible for most instruments) 2) Range demonstration (for brass instruments) 3) Doubles discussion and/or demonstration (for saxophones) 4) Groove/feel demonstration (for rhythm section instruments) 5) OPTIONAL AUDITION COMPONENT --- Improvisation on one of the basic chord progressions shown below. [With the approval of the Director of Jazz Studies, more experienced players may substitute a different piece for their improvisation audition, particularly if they are also auditioning for the Jazz Combo program.] Please note that if you are a horn player who does not yet feel comfortable improvising, you should not let that stop you from auditioning for Jazz Area ensembles. Again, any demonstration of improvisation skills is a strictly optional portion of the overall audition process. Improvisation Option #1: B Blues (B concert) B
