Foreword Organization of the index The index in this booklet arranges all of the surviving works by Jean Sibelius alphabetically within various categories. The listings include title, opus/JS number, date of composition (or arrangement), details of instrumentation/scoring (if this is not sell evident from the title of the category), and a three-part number identifying the box CD and track(s) where a recording of the piece may be found. Individual vocal/choral and theatre works are listed in the original language with English translation in brackets. Theatre music is assumed to be primarily orchestral except for Ödlan (The Lizard), which is for a string ensemble with solo violin, and Twelfth Night (two songs). Published collections (Five Pieces, Six Songs, etc.) arc listed under collection title (in English) as well as under the pieces' individual names. Works (primarily orchestral) known internationally by their English titles are listed under these with, where appropriate, cross-references from the original language. A few vocal works that are also known internationally in English are cross-referenced. Sibelius left many compositions without title or tempo marking. In BIS's Sibelius Edition the works in question have been given 'working titles' based on their musical character and style; these are listed within square brackets. If several versions of a work exist, these are distinguished by such terms as 'original', 'published', 'final' (etc.). The designations used in this index have been chosen to reflect as far as possible the specific manuscript status and performance history of the work in question. Opus and JS numbers The opus numbering of Sibelius's works contains many inconsistencies and illogicalities. The composer first produced a numbered list of works in 1896, and a list of opus 4
numbers the following year, but many of these numbers were later changed. Not until 1903 did his works start to be published with opus numbers, and only from 1930-31 onwards can the numbering be regarded as definitive. A full description of the development of Sibelius's opus numbers is found in Fabian Dahlström's Jean Sibelius: Thematischbibliographisches Verzeichnis seiner Werke (Breitkopf & Härtel 2003, pp. 680-692). In 1982 the Sibelius family donated a major collection of manuscripts to Helsinki University Library (HUL, now the National Library of Finland). Many of these works are now known by JS numbers, referring to the alphabetical list of Jean Sibelius's compositions without opus number used in Dahlström's above-mentioned catalogue. A significant number of these compositions will ultimately be published by Breitkopf & Härtel. Andrew Barnett

Index compiled by Sndrew Barnett and BIS Records, 2011 55
The ones that got away… The Sibelius Edition is the most comprehensive recorded survey of Sibelius’s music. Attentive collectors may have noticed, however, that certain works are not represented in the thirteen boxes that constitute this edition. The works in question are as follow: Op.72 Nos 1 and 2: the manuscripts of the songs Vi ses igen (Farewell, to words by Rydberg) and Orions bälte (Orion's Girdle, Topelius) went astray during the First World War, possibly lost in the post on their way to Breitkopf & Härtel. Op. 82: although the first (1915) and last (1919) versions of the Fifth Symphony are included in Box 12, no score exists for its intermediate 1916 incarnation and the only orchestral part to have survived is for double bass. Op.107 and Op.117: Sibelius did not definitively allocate these opus numbers, although provisional opus lists reveal that he did consider using them for `Four Religious Choral Pieces' or for a hymn for choir and orchestra (possibly Salem) (Op. 107), and for Andante festivo, the orchestral Academic March, the choral piece Karjalan osa and the Suite for Violin and Strings (Op. 117). The published edition (1993) of the Suite for Violin and Strings, JS 185, is incorrectly labeled Op. 117: the lure of assigning Sibelius's highest opus number must have been too great for the editors and publishers to resist. JS 13: The only manuscript of this 25-bar piano piece, an Adagio in E minor, apparently a sketch for the slow movement of the Voces intimae string quartet, was sold in the mid2000s to a private collector by Musikantiquariat Hans Schneider in Tutzing, Germany. Notwithstanding numerous attempts by BIS, the pianist Folke Gräsbeck, the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel and other interested parties, Dr Schneider has, despite several promises, failed to establish contact between BIS and the present owner. The manuscript is thus currently unavailable. 56
JS 29: The American Millers' Song – is lost. JS 80: Fechtmusik (Fencing Music) – an orchestral score written in Vienna in 1891 as an entry in a competition organized by a fencer named Hartl for music to accompany his displays. Sibelius's piece, one of around 40 entries, was judged to be too serious and 'nonViennese', and is now lost. The winning entry, by a local conductor, was a Viennese medley which Sibelius was asked to orchestrate — a task he performed in just 45 minutes. JS 106: Kantaatti tohtorin- ja maisterinvihkijäisissä 31 [30] päivänä toukokuuta 1897 (Cantata for the University Graduation Ceremonies of 1897), the last and most extensive of three cantatas that Sibelius composed for Helsinki University in the 1890s. The choral parts are intact but the orchestral score is lost; a few brass and percussion parts still exist but these give little idea of the overall disposition of the work. We do, however, have most of Sibelius's own piano reduction, made for rehearsal purposes, and this has formed the basis of the recording included in Box 11 of this edition. In six of the movements it has been possible for Kalevi Aho to complete missing elements of the piano score to produce a performable version. JS 151: an arrangement of Porilaisten marssi for small orchestra dating from December 1892, when it was performed by an amateur orchestra in Helsinki at the unveiling of Albert Edelfelt's painting of the same name. This arrangement is now lost. JS 175: Snöfallet (The Snowfall) was written in September 1927 as a present for Jakob von Julin, a businessman who had supplied a musical motif that Sibelius had arranged two years earlier (Morceau romantique, JS 135a/b). Nothing more is known about this piece. JS 190: Searching for traces of the Eighth Symphony, to which this JS number has been allocated, is the Sibelian equivalent of the quest for the Holy Grail. But Sibelius has covered his tracks very carefully, and among his sketches and drafts there is no substantial or performable material that can reasonably be associated with the symphony. 57
JS 198: Theme and Seven Variations for piano, composed in Vienna in the spring of I 891 and warmly acclaimed by Sibelius's fiancée Aino. The solo piano version is lost, hut a revised version for two violins, cello and piano has survived (JS 156, Box 2). JS 204: a song, Tre trallande jäntor (Three Warbling Maidens), full of ‘humour and poetry’ (diary, 12th August 1915) to a text by Fröding, composed in August 1915 but rejected just two days later when the composer's mood darkened and he lacked the strength to compose. Now lost. JS 223: Zirkus-Marsch, composed in Vienna in March 1891 and now lost. Okenscen; Tant Evelinas liv i toner: in later life Sibelius told the musicologist and Aho Akademi professor Otto Andersson that his first composition was a piano work for children's theatre, called Ökenscen (Desert Scene), but no other traces of such a work have survived. As a boy Sibelius is known to have entertained his aunt Evelina with a piano piece or improvisation called Tant Evelinas liv i toner (Aunt Evelina's Life in Music). If either of these pieces was ever written down, no traces have survived. Piece for string quartet: when preparing his early monograph on Sibelius (1916), Erik Furuhjelm was allowed to see many manuscripts from the composer's youth (a privilege otherwise unavailable to scholars until the 1990s). Evidently he was allowed to see the original manuscript for Vattendroppar, often believed to be Sibelius's first surviving composition, as he mentions that the manuscript also contains a piece for string quartet, `apparently composed rather later. It displays a relatively rich elaboration'. The original manuscript of Vattendroppar, and with it this piece for quartet, are unfortunately lost.
