A Special Note to Parents: I take this opportunity to draw the attention of all parents towards an important activity, indicated in the tentative orientation schedule. On 1st of August we plan to have a day-long ‘Discussion with Parents’. At IIIT-H, we believe that education is not only about academics but also about providing essential guidance to the ‘young adults’ in finding their real goals and evolve into responsible members of the society. Both parents as well as teachers can play important roles in this regard and hence during this meet, we would like to explore ways and means by which this can be achieved. We therefore expect parents to join us on the Parent’s Day and participate in the discussions. Those accompanying their wards should plan to spend an extra day, and join us on Parent’s Day. Letter from the Director To Prospective Students and Parents of IIIT Hyderabad June 2016 Congratulations on your academic achievements and thank you for your interest in IIIT Hyderabad. IIIT-H is a different institution; I want to briefly explain our core philosophy as you prepare to fill your choices for the Phase II of our admissions. The primary objective of education at IIIT-H is to impart a mature world-view and a long-term vision to the students. We do not merely transmit technical skills or scientific knowledge. Providing skills for a high-profile first job after the course of study is definitely not institute's only objective. Let’s consider the skill of driving a car. Efficient driving (spending less fuel, reducing wear-and-tear) needs a deep understanding of the scientific and engineering principles that govern automobiles. While the skill and the knowledge are important, neither will help you choose the right destination for your journey. We want you as a student of IIIT-H to acquire a world-view that helps you choose the destination that is most fulfilling to you, in addition to the skills and scientific understanding. IIIT-H is a research university. It has been rated among top technology schools of the country by different sources, notably as the #3 technology school in India by Dataquest from 2012 onwards. However, we measure our success in terms of the research done at the institute and take pride in the impact we have on the society. Faculty and students at the institute work on several innovative technologies with large potential. These include language translation, speech recognition and synthesis, robotics, data mining, computer vision, VLSI, communications, information security, structural safety, energy-efficient building, computer-aided drug-design, etc. IIIT-H provides a research option to the BTech students from the very beginning. Those opting for research get a B.Tech (Honours) degree in 4 years, and can opt for an MS by Research degrees in 5 years. UG research is an integral element of our design. Over a dozen top-class publications emerge from IIIT-H with undergraduate co-authors every year.
The ability to solve unstructured and unseen problems is essential to do well in a fast-changing world of tomorrow. Students keen to be researchers and product designers should consider our dual-Degree programmes. IIIT-H also has an exciting incubation programme with several promising companies started by our students and alumni. We actively encourage students and faculty taking their technology to the world in the form of products through it. The T-Hub initiative of Telangana government is built on top of the track-record of our incubation activities. The T-Hub will be housed on our campus for its first phase, giving a big fillip to the institute in the coming years. We have dual degree programmes that link Computer Science with domains like Natural Sciences, Linguistics, and Humanities. Computing is an enabling discipline and can produce great impact when combined with other areas. We have an atmosphere at the Institute that promotes extra-curricular activities and deep introspection. We have a highly acclaimed course on Human Values to tempt students to contemplate on their roles in life broadly.Our true goal is often to impact the society deeply; the immediate concerns about comforts are very minor in comparison. Each of you will have your own ideas about what your own impact should be. We want you to find your own way, without any pressure from outside. Financial Assistance is given to those in need at IIIT-H. Bank loans are available easily to those enrolled at IIIT-H. In addition, IIIT-H Special Financial Scheme (ISFAS) is available to needy students, facilitated by donations from our alumni. If you long for a significant impact on the world through technology, then IIIT-H is the right institute for you. While studying at IIIT-H you’ll be expected to work hard, have a true aptitude in the subject area, and possess the right attitude. Dear Fresher! As a fresher, college is about seizing the day. As a fresher, the greatest fear for most was to walk out of the dear home with familiar faces and walk into a large hall with an unknown visage, as nervous and frightened as you and honestly have no idea what to do next. And that, my friend, is where the magic happens. So, congratulations! You can go and ahead finally put those prep books in your attic now, no need for them anymore! (Well at least not in first year) The fire-breathing dragon that had descended in the form of endless entrance exams, sleepless nights trying to figure out that “last” question, comparisons with the “sharmaji ka beta” and aunties who inquire about your “well-being” all are going to become a distant past. The dragon is now slayed and you are knocking on the doors from where college life starts. The image of clean uniforms, plaited hair and spotless polished black shoes will very soon seem like a distant memory. Once in college, the sheltered lifestyle of schooling will become nearly obsolete, giving way to a courageous, ambitious and conscious individual. Yes, that will be you. This introspection, the consciousness and the courage will not come easy, mind you! It will be gruelling and challenging, as you will be striving to be better than yourself, everyday. That's not a scary thing though. That's what college is meant for. You would often find yourself doing tasks out of your comfort zone, face challenges that initially look intimidating. Whether it’s academic things like doing well in a course, doing research work, competitive coding or exciting internships, or other things like playing sports, writing for the college magazine, dancing for the college fest, creating your own band and performing in November Jam, and so many other fun activities. Explore talents that you never knew you had, and find something that you are really passionate about. Make sure to get a piece of everything the college has to offer. Don’t hold back and try to participate in everything you possibly can. Enjoy these years as much as you can. There is nothing like them. Don’t be afraid to do things because you might fail, but, live and fail often.
We, here at IIIT, are a tight knit family. Owing to the relatively small size of our community and campus, you will know everyone by name, and will bond with juniors and seniors alike. You will be embark on this journey with your batch mates and seniors, later joined by your own juniors (currently fighting those dragons), while the faculty and professors watch on as guardians, nudging you towards your own path. In this process, you will be part of unbreakable bonds and camaraderie leaving an indelible mark on lives in college. If you feel stuck and lost, there are people at every step willing to help you, reach out to them. We know that you will have many questions, concerns or problems. The institute has constituted a mentoring system, which enables student mentors to assist the freshmen in overcoming any hurdles that they might be experiencing. We have an Apex body of students who, in conjunction with their Faculty guides, will be coordinating with your direct student mentors. Your mentors and us, the Apex Body, are always available for you to contact with any issues throughout the year.
