Trade mathematics
#athematics in onstruction Intro(uction! n the real world of uilding construction there are many rich prolems which can e used to uild sense making and reasoning skills for students.
The wesite J15) for TeachersK offers ready to use lessons ased on ;T# standards as an e2ample. )ome activities on this site include *ow many )hingles, 1ricing a Geck , and $encing the +ard. The 1ythagorean Theorem is used e2tensively in designing and uilding structures, especially roofs. Lale roofs, for e2ample, are made y placing two right triangles together. )pecialied terms help to e2plain the triangle relationships in roof construction. Terminology
The span is the length from the outside wall to the outside wall of a uilding. 5ecause construction is often made up of multiple layers of wood, uilding plans often provided detailed descriptions to make clear where to egin or end measurements. The %-; is one(half the span. -nits of run are typically ased on <= inches.

arpenters do not refer to the angle of a roof as > or A, ut prefer to use the pitch of the roof. The pitch is a ratio of vertical to horiontal measurements. f a plan calls for a A7<= pitch roof, then the architect wants the slope of the roof to go up si2 inches for every <= inches of horiontal run. arpenters prefer to use 1itch in calculations instead of rise and run.

$oundation #lan ()his plan shows how the foundation should be built according to the information from the soil sample. It shows how deep into the ground the footings will go and it gives the dimensions of the footings. It also shows the dimensions of the foundation wall and any columns or blocks used in the foundation. It also shows the si*e of floor +oists and how they are spaced. $inally, it needs to show the vent locations in the foundation walls.
0loor Plan (This is what most people are familiar with when they are designing a home. t is sometimes called a home lue print. t is the layout of the e2terior and interior walls.
The floor plan house lueprints also needs to include the dimensions for walls, rooms, wall thickness, windows and doors, kitchen and ath layouts, electrical and pluming layouts, stairs, ceilings, and flooring.
