How to make glue from recycled expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam)
Discarded polystyrene polystyrene does not biodegrade for hundreds of years and is resistant to photolysis, thus nding ways to recycle it would be helpful minimizing the damage caused by this material !y turning styro into a well"functioning glue using a few simple materials and following a few easy steps, you reduce the percenta percentage ge of expanded polystyrene polystyrene contributing to the earth#s
pollution $range oil contains properties that melt polystyrene !y using orange oil and polystyrene to make glue, you can create a more non"toxic adhesi%e that not only works well and promotes recycling, but also smells great& What you will need: ' glass ar with lid (preferably tight"sealing) pure orange oil * mixing stick, or any sort of stick that can be used to mix substances (ex popsicle sticks) + styrofoam (preferably old pieces of styrofoam meant to be thrown away)
Step 1: Preparing the styrofoam
ear or cut your styrofoam into small pieces and place them in a ar Do this in a well"%entilated area
Step - .dding the orange oil
/lace a few drops of the orange oil in the ar with the styrofoam he amount of oil you use will depend on the amount of styrofoam you ha%e, though there is no exact xed ratio (Hint: it doesn#t take a lot of oil to melt a lot of styrofoam 0n fact, it#s surprising how e1ecti%e ust a few drops can be& 2xperiment rst to see what amount of orange oil works for you, and mo%e on from there)
Step *- 3ixing
3ix the oil and Styrofoam in the ar using a stick
Step +- ransformation
he styrofoam should be #melting# because of the oil as you mix
Step 4- 5inished product
6hen the styrofoam has completely dissol%ed, you should be left with a clear"like, sticky li7uid substance his substance is your glue& Store it in a tightly"sealed glass ar to pre%ent it from drying.
Step 8- 9sing your glue
he glue can be used on se%eral types of materials (2x wood glued to metal pieces)
Ha%e fun and experiment on what materials your new glue is most e1ecti%e on&
Step 7: Tips and Recommendations " 3ake sure you are using /9:2 orange oil& .ny additi%es in the oil will pre%ent the glue from forming properly " ;lue consistency depends on the amount of orange oil you add to the Styrofoam he more orange oil it contains, the more %iscous it will be " he glue should be clear and hard when dry " he texture of, and way of applying, the glue is similar to rugby
