Samsung makes storage flexible with the Convertible French Door Refrigerator with a bottom right door can be a fridge or freezer, maximizing fresh food storage space.
“My approach to interior design is eclectic. I believe in style that is slowly collected and designed over time. A home should tell a story—where you have been and where you are going– and the kitchen is no exception.”

ON ENTERTAINING I’m a huge party thrower, so my fridge needs to turn into beverage central. I want guests to easily access drinks and what better way then sparkling water from the fridge! Samsung makes hosting easy with the Samsung 4-Door Sparkling Water Refrigerator which dispenses still or sparkling water straight from the door!
ON UNEXPECTED DESIGN Take unique pieces that you might want to have in a living room, like a worn Persian rug and special art, and place them in the kitchen instead. It elevates the room and the contradiction of modern appliances and inviting accents is a beautiful mix.*
ON HOLIDAY COOKING When hosting holiday gatherings, it is important to spend more time with guests and less time in the kitchen. Samsung makes entertaining easy with the Samsung Flex Duo™ Slide-in Range: Cook multiple dishes at different temperatures simultaneously with no noticeable transfer of aroma.

COLOR KITCHENS
It doesn’t have to be white. Use a gutsy blue or an ethereal green to bring beauty to this multifunctional space.
“I did a black, white, and gray kitchen in Palm Beach, but it was leaving us a bit chilly. So we painted the ceiling hot pink, and the insides of the cabinets a lighter version of the same shade. The color is a surprise and a delight. It made the ceiling soar and gave the space a whole new energy.” PATRICK KILLIAN BENJAMIN MOORE WATERBORNE CEILING PAINT GYPSY ROSE 1327
“If you want something clean and neutral but more interesting than white, try this whisper of a color that goes green or blue in different lights. It adds character and a bit of age, it’s easy to live with, and it makes a smoother transition to the adjacent rooms, which are full of color.” KATIE RIDDER FARROW & BALL ESTATE EGGSHELL PALE POWDER 204
“For a client who loves to cook and garden, we updated the cabinets with a warm sage green—a color traditionally used for painting greenhouses. We knew it would soften the darkgreen marble countertops and look great with her collection of vintage botanical prints. It gives a large kitchen the feel of a cozy potting shed.” COURTNEY COLEMAN BENJAMIN MOORE SATIN IMPERVO HILL SIDE GREEN 495

“For an unexpected dash of personality and warmth, add a shock of color to the back of your cabinets. I know this is bright, but when it’s behind glass doors and acting as a backdrop to all your dishes, it livens things up nicely. And it’s easy to change in a few years, if turquoise starts calling to you.” DOUGLAS GRANETO FARROW & BALL ESTATE EGGSHELL CHARLOT TE’S LOCKS 268
“In an open kitchen that’s the first thing you see as you walk in the front door, I needed something dramatic. So I painted all the cabinetry black, which really shows off the stainless steel appliances, the copper tile backsplash, and the glass pendants. Black is handsome. It has solidity and heft.” PALMER WEISS BENJAMIN MOORE ULTR A SPEC 500 BL ACK INT. RM/EX T. RM
Interviews by CHRISTINE PITTEL
“This is the color of putty—a rich taupe that wavers between green and gray. There’s a rawness to it. It’s a neutral with character. I used it on the island and the crown moldings. Surrounded by crisp white cabinetry, it grounds the space and makes it much warmer.” AMY AIDINIS HIRSCH FINE PAINTS OF EUROPE HOLL ANDL AC G23120
Find hundreds of paint colors on House Beautiful’s iPad app—now available on iTunes!
“The problem with kitchens is that there’s so much cabinetry, which, frankly, can be boring. Red paint on the walls adds some excitement and fills up all the blanks, pulling the room together. And it has been proven that red makes people hungry.”
“Paint everything one color—this elegant gray. It’s like a frothy latte. Not too dark, not too cold ...just right. It will add a little architectural gravitas to even the saddest cabinetry. And if it feels too restrained, bring in lemony yellow, blue, and white.” BENJAMIN DHONG BENJAMIN MOORE REGAL CL ASSIC PREMIUM HA Z Y SKIES OC-48
“Green feels like a natural. It adds vibrancy next to classic white subway tiles and cabinets. This is a cool green with a hint of blue. It makes me think of eucalyptus leaves. It’s compatible with almost any color and even makes food look good.” KENDALL WILKINSON PR AT T & L AMBERT ACCOL ADE DRIED BAY LEAF 15-24

“I’m a big blue-and-white freak. It says nautical, crisp, and timeless to me. I painted my kitchen cabinets this great blue—almost a navy but with some periwinkle thrown in— and did white statuary marble on the countertops, and blue-andwhite wallpaper. And of course the cabinets are crammed with blueand-white pottery.” DAN BARSANTI FARROW & BALL ESTATE EMUL SION PITCH BLUE 220
“In a Greenwich Village apartment with wonderfully beat-up brick walls—carved out of a former stable—we chose deep cream for the cabinetry in the open kitchen. The color seems to embody the light. It glows but doesn’t turn yellow. It led us down that warm, vintage path without feeling too old.” CAREY MALONEY DONALD K AUFMAN COLOR DKC-93
“I had a small laundry room off my kitchen. But since space was at a premium and I like to drink much more than do laundry, I turned it into a butler’s pantry. I love apples and mar tinis, so apple green was the obvious choice. A bright color makes a room feel intimate, and the glossy finish adds a shimmer.” JEFFREY ALAN MARKS FARROW & BALL FULL GLOSS BREAKFAST ROOM GREEN 81

One decorator, three very different rooms, and just over 12 hours—designer Libby Langdon reinvents a whole section of a family’s home before the sun even sets.

Refresh! The living room all started with the goldfish painting by Penelope Deyhle that hangs over the mantel. “We used that artwork as the jumpingoff point for our combination of multiple bright colors,” designer Libby Langdon says. For details about the furnishings, see page 36.
Interior designer Libby Langdon is the queen of the speedy makeover, giving clients a whole new decor in a single day—on camera, no less. House Beautiful dropped by the set of her new TV show, Daykeover with Libby Langdon, to see how she gave three rooms in a Rumson, New Jersey, home a family-friendly refresh via paint, wallpaper, window treatments, new furniture, and lighting, as well as some simple tricks— many achievable in just a few hours. “Not everybody can go in and overhaul a room with all new furnishings,” says Langdon. “Sometimes you just need to add a few new pieces or rearrange existing ones— which can be just as fun and dramatic as a complete redo.” Here, her top tips. >>

ONE-DAY MAKEOVER Langdon wanted to make a big first impression in this space, but she didn’t have a large canvas to work with. Every wall is punctuated with either a doorway or a window, limiting her options for furnishings and surface treatments. THE CHALLENGE
FOYER

TIP
1
YOU DON’T NEED BIG EXPANSES OF WALL TO USE WALLCOVERINGS “This dynamic grass cloth sparked the entire color scheme. The texture and the subtle imperfections in the hand printing create dimension. Although the pattern is pretty large, it’s great for this foyer: Since you never see it on a full wall, it doesn’t look too busy. People are often afraid of bold wallcoverings, but if you’re just seeing slits and slivers of it, it packs a punch without overwhelming a space.”
2
DON’T BE AFRAID TO BLOCK WINDOWS “Lacking a solid wall to push furniture against, we had to use a window wall—something people tend to avoid for fear of blocking light or views. Don’t be a slave to your architecture: Make it work. Low pieces like these ottomans won’t block views, even if your windows extend almost to the floor. And lean profiles—such as the Parsons-style console—let light and air pass through.”
3
YOUR SECRET WEAPON: OTTOMANS! “Throughout these rooms, ottomans bring in another scale. They keep layouts mobile, working as spare perches or side tables. I love ottomans in front of a hearth, where they draw attention to decorative surrounds. And in warmer months when your fireplace is dormant, you have something pretty to look at—they’re like jewelry.”

GO FOR A LARGE RUG IN A SMALL SPACE “A large faux-sisal rug makes this area feel welcoming. I worried that if we chose one that was sized to leave a wide wood border, it would make the foyer seem smaller and the rug look like a postage stamp! The indoor/ outdoor material is great for the wear-and-tear of a foyer, and the subtle pattern doesn’t compete with the wallcovering.” >>

THE CHALLENGE To devise a compact seating plan conducive to intimate group gatherings. The clients needed a family hangout for relaxing and playing games, but the room is tight. Langdon also wanted to incorporate pattern without making the space too busy.
1 USE WALLPAPER AS AN ACCENT “The clients loved this patterned wallpaper, but the room is squarefoot challenged, so we had to limit ourselves. We used it to line the backs of the bookcases—a neat trick if you don’t want to go for a full accent wall. Bookcases are a forgiving place for DIY wallpaper installation, because your handiwork will be somewhat hidden.”
TIP
1
2 MAXIMIZE THE SEATING AREA
WITH A SLIM-ARMED SOFA “The former sofa had arms almost 12 inches wide, wasting two feet of space in a room that couldn’t spare it! We swapped it for one that’s four inches smaller, but that has 20 more inches of sitting space because of its slim arms. They can squish a whole other kid on there! Don’t fixate on overall sofa size; look at the inside seat width instead.”
3 SWIVEL CHAIRS! “We needed somewhere for every family member to sit, but because of the room’s tight dimensions we couldn’t use large chairs. These 29-inch-wide swivel chairs are super-comfortable but sleek. I like swivel chairs in large rooms—they allow you to mediate between seating areas—but they’re equally effective in small spaces because they give an ease of movement. Plus, this is a family hangout, and kids love to swivel in chairs!” 4 GROUP SMALL ARTWORK
FOR BIG IMPACT “People think you need to use small artwork in a small room, but the opposite is true: One large piece—or a grouping that reads as a single big piece—works best, opening up a room to make it feel larger. Here, framing a selection of black-and-white family photos as an ensemble gave the same impact a large piece of art would have.” >>

LIVING ROOM
The furniture layout was a major concern for the clients, who needed ample seating for entertaining—but didn’t want to overcrowd the decor. Complicating matters, the room’s proportions are long and somewhat narrow, with underutilized alcoves flanking the fireplace.
THE CHALLENGE
1 PUT DEAD SPACE TO WORK “There were awkward nooks with high windows on either side of the fireplace, and I wanted them to feel intentional. A pair of wing chairs softened the angularity and extended the seating area. Conventional wisdom would suggest placing bookcases there, but shelves filled with knickknacks would have made the room look overpopulated and would distract from the gorgeous fireplace surround.” 2 UNMOOR YOUR FURNITURE “Everyone’s instinct is to push furniture up against the walls. And then they wonder why they don’t use the room! It’s because the furniture is too far apart for conversation, what I call the ‘wallflower effect.’ Pull furniture away from the walls, leaving at least 30 inches behind it to pass through. Give it a shot: If it works, it’s an easy transformation, and if you hate it—just push it back!”

COCKTAIL TABLE “If your guests have to stand up to grab an appetizer or set down a drink, the layout of your room needs to be more user friendly. Here, I used what I call a ‘connector’ cocktail table because its generous size unites the seating areas, and guests can easily reach it from several parts of the room. Keeping about a foot between it and the furniture creates cohesion yet leaves enough visual breathing room.”

ENCOURAGE CONVERSATION “Always let the activity of a room dictate the furniture arrangement. In a space where you entertain, create conversation areas where guests can chat. People think, Plunk a big sofa in there! But I find it unusual for three people to sit side by side on a sofa together and turn their heads to talk. Chairs are better if you love to entertain.”

Probably Roger BanksPye’s rooms in his book Colefax and Fowler: Interior Inspirations. He used a lot of blue and white. I think that’s a combination that feels right in any interior. Leopard print is like that for me too.
It’s a cartoon-worthy scene.
Does it make me look insane? I meant the comical mix of breeds, including a Great Dane that you could saddle and ride the Texas trails on.
Orange saris, an orange ceiling, a riot of blueand-white patterns: It all comes together in a rather theatrical way.
I know, Loretta is bigger than anyone else in the family—she takes up half our king-size bed. But so be it. Anyone who says diamonds are a girl’s best friend never had a dog.
Well, I do like drama, and I did study theater design in college. I love color and pattern, and I mix them in a way you might not imagine would work. Believe it or not, the room feels calm, maybe because it’s a happy place. Here’s the thing: Your bedroom is your one true private space, so follow your passion— it always works out for the best. Your bedroom should be about love: things you love, people you love, dogs you love. And if those dogs jump on the bed, even better!
Where are their beds?
Here in the room, all done in the same fabric as my bed. Is that one of your own fabric designs?
No, it’s by Schumacher, and the darker textile is a 19th-century ikat I found in Malaysia. But I designed the ticking stripe on the wall, and the headboard is based on a bed I slept in at the Palais Donab in Marrakech. What about the panels on the pelmet canopy?

Those are antique saris I bought on a trip to India. I like the whimsy of having two different oranges; it makes it less serious.

Lobster Bisque An elegant and luscious soup is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season and pay tribute to the comforts of tradition.
When I was growing up in Atlanta, Christmas was about concerts. That’s because my stepfather, Robert Shaw, conducted at least 12 of them every year, including a festival of carols with collegiate and children’s groups and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and a “Messiah” with more than 300 people in the chorus. Robert was Mr. Christmas. His album Christmas Hymns and Carols was the first classical record ever to go gold, and each year tens of thousands of people heard his concerts live, not to mention the millions more who listened in radio land. By the time Christmas Day rolled around, Robert was usually exhausted and only in the mood for a fairly quiet celebration. My mother’s family would come to our house for a mid-afternoon lunch, and the menu was always the same: Champagne, cheese straws, and smoked salmon, followed by lobster bisque, the perfect roast tenderloin of beef with sauce soubise, and creamed spinach with red peppers, with charlotte russe for dessert. place would have a handwritten card—and a Christmas cracker from England for us to pull and pop! There would be very special red wine for the grown-ups, and the children couldn’t wait to get up from the table to play with the toys Santa had brought. The adults were surely delighted by this moment, at least until the year we knocked over the 16-foot tree and it came crashing to the floor. Nobody was hurt, but I only use small trees as centerpieces on my table now. I’ve come to realize that the only constant in life is change, and my Christmases these days are spent either in New York or Los Angeles. If I’m in New York, I’ll go to an early service of lessons and carols at St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue, and then to the house of a friend who serves a very festive dinner, down to the Christmas crackers. If I’m in L.A., I entertain at home. Last year we were 40, my adopted family of friends, and guess what I gave them? The menu from my Southern childhood. Regardless of whatever else changes, the food must stay the same. With each bite, I’m home again in Atlanta, age 10. And not one year goes by without me listening to Robert’s Christmas album Songs of Angels at least two hundred dozen zillion times. Now I’d like to share one of my favorite holiday recipes with you. Let me know how it goes at housebeautiful.com/alexbisque. Happy holidays! Love, Alex. OPPOSITE: Though simple and straightforward to prepare, the bisque is a luxe addition to a holiday feast. ABOVE: The soup gets a rich undertone from the tomato paste and cognac, a lush texture from the milk and cream, and a delicate tang from the tarragon. Any combination of lobster meat can be used, including claws and tails.

LOBSTER BISQUE
Yield: 8 cups (6–8 servings)
8 tablespoons butter, divided 1 cup diced onion 3½ cups very rich chicken stock 3½ cups milk 2 teaspoons salt, divided 1 teaspoon white pepper, divided ¼ cup flour 1 cup heavy cream 2 lbs. lobster meat (can be claw, tail, body, or fin) 10 tablespoons cognac, divided 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 cloves garlic, minced 7 tablespoons tomato paste 1 tablespoon dried tarragon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 Melt 4 tablespoons butter over medium heat in a large (at least 2-quart) saucepan or Dutch oven. Add the onion and sauté until translucent, 8 to 9 minutes. 2 In another saucepan over
medium heat, warm the chicken
stock and milk. Add 1¼ teaspoons salt and ½ teaspoon white pepper, and continue heating until the mixture is scalding. 3 Add the flour to the onion mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until the flour is cooked thoroughly but not browned, about 2 minutes. The mixture should be fairly stiff. 4 Add the scalding stock mixture
to the onion mixture. Whisk vigorously to break up any lumps. 5 Bring the mixture to a boil,
and then turn off the heat. (The soup base will have thickened to an appropriate consistency after boiling.) Stir in the cream and set the soup base aside. 6 In a large, heavy skillet, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Season the lobster with the remaining ¾ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon white pepper. When the butter’s
foaming subsides, add the lobster meat to the pan. Sauté for about 1 minute, making sure the lobster is fully coated with butter. (All this happens fairly quickly: Be careful not to overcook the lobster.) Add ¼ cup cognac and sauté for 1 minute more. Remove from the heat, drain, and reserve the lobster and the pan juices separately. 7 Return the soup base to medium-low heat and add the remaining 6 tablespoons cognac, the lemon juice, garlic, tomato paste, tarragon, and nutmeg. Whisk to combine the ingredients, and then add the reserved lobster pan juices. Simmer the bisque, whisking occasionally, until fully heated through. 8 When you are ready to serve,
add the sautéed lobster meat to the bisque and serve immediately. Do not let the lobster continue cooking, or it will become rubbery and tasteless.

I T E N D T O L O OK AT T H E W OR L D in amazement. But like most of us, I still need reminders to notice the little things, like the way light plays across the surfaces of a room or the texture of a luxurious fabric. I’ve become addicted to my Instagram feed, because I’m fascinated with how people see the world and the way they capture it in the pictures they share. Some people seem to notice spectacular details and beauty at just about every step of the day. Their Instagram posts keep my sense of wonderment alive: Frances Palmer, a ceramist and gardener; Miguel Flores-Vianna, a photographer and friend living in England who has a sharp eye for great design; and Chris Ozer, another talented photographer who lives in Brooklyn. In this issue we’ve created our first Amazing List. Think of it as a starting point to get you looking for, considering, and discovering wonderful things. New technologies are evolving at a pace we’ve never experienced before, changing the way we live. We have access with the tap of a finger to treasures and inspiration from every corner of the world. What’s amazing today may be normal tomorrow. But I never want w to lose the sense ense of wonderment that also h helps me appreciate the he simple things around me every ev day.

IN HIS OWN HOME, A DESIGNER CAN’T RESIST PUTTING A STYLISH SPIN ON TRADITION

The library in designer Garrow Kedigian’s Manhattan apartment sheds fresh light on the classics he collects, both literary and decorative. A bergère in Pierre Frey’s Dune partners with a mid-20thcentury inlaid desk. Custom Stark rug with the designer’s hallmark Greek key pattern. OPPOSITE: In the living room, an art project Kedigian painted in architecture school hangs above a vintage Parzinger campaign chair. New moldings conjure Beaux Arts grandeur.
“I wanted to have a library before that notion becomes extinct,” says Kedigian, “but the shell had to feel contemporary and fun.” Solution? A vibrant custom palette in a Fine Paints of Europe Brilliant finish. Curtains of Clarence House Elettra flank a sofa in Scalamandré’s Variegation herringbone. A Louis XV fauteuil (a gift from Kedigian’s grandmother) retains its original blue velvet, and a neoclassical side chair is updated with Glant Liquid Leather.

DOUGL AS BRENNER: Did Fred Astaire’s feet actually
touch this floor? I didn’t find out until my co-op board interview that he lived here for about 10 years after World War II. The owners before me, who purchased the place from him, had hardly changed a thing. It was a wreck. We scraped off 32 layers of paint and wallpaper. The plaster had cracks you could stick a finger in. White shag carpeting covered the parquet! There was almost none of the original architectural detail you’d expect to find in a Beaux Arts Park Avenue building like this—only plain square beams. Other than a glamorous past, what was the allure of those bare bones? It was the floor plan I really responded to. Much of my family background is French—my grandmother’s Paris apartment has a classic room-toroom-to-room enfilade—and the layout here felt very Parisian. I saw at once that if I cut a large opening from the dining room into what had been the master bedroom, and turned that into a library, I could have an enfilade straight through to the fireplace in there. It’s wonderful for entertaining. Of course, I added all the crown moldings, paneling, casing, and chair rails. Why doesn’t this come off as one more ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ revival? My style is streamlined classic. Tailored and crisp. If you go too heavy with the architecture, you lose the contemporary aspect of a space. Although I have a passion for flea markets—nothing here is new, apart from the upholstery—I am not designing for 100 years ago. Some midcentury and contemporary pieces are threaded through the antiques and found objects. Painting an entire room a strong color, including the trim, gives it an edgy freshness, because the color becomes part of the architecture. High-gloss paint adds dimension and strength to any pigment. I don’t like white—it’s such a developer default. Endless white rooms are depressing. Where did you find that dreamy blue? When I was 10, my parents took us on a trip to India. New Delhi is where I began to understand the power of design. We visited a palace where one room was bright turquoise, and the ceiling was open to the sky. It was the most incredible space I’d ever seen. I said, ‘One day, I’m going to have a blue room that gives you this feeling.’ My library does it for me. I struggled with the actual shade, GARROW KEDIGIAN:
because what looked great in daylight wouldn’t look good at night, and vice versa. We tried at least 25 samples. I would come at all hours to see how it felt. I kept saying, ‘It’s too juvenile,’ until the painter got it just serious enough by adding black. This bold geometric rug is a terrific foil to the muted Persian carpet in the dining room. That rug looks beautifully threadbare only because it’s turned upside down. If you saw the other side, you would die. It’s so boisterous, so noisy. Persian rugs can overwhelm a room; I do that to calm them down. I bring clients here to show them ideas like that—or painting window frames black to sharpen the view. Would you call the living room café au lait? My painter calls it ‘brown paper bag.’ It was inspired by a mesmerizing color I first saw in a townhouse [interior designer] Tim Whealon did for William Reilly, a fabulous collector of antiquities. That deep mocha brought an almost homey feeling to objects you’d expect to see against white museum walls. At night, these walls are quite mysterious, and the high-gloss ceiling reflects yellow cabs going up and down Park. Your asymmetrical furniture arrangements make inviting detours. The living room was tricky, because with the French doors, the fireplace, and the opening to the dining room, you have only one good wall for furnishings. I knew immediately I wanted an intimate seating group by the fireplace—the angled banquette and the wing chair—but the room is too big for just that. I put in a floating sofa and set it perpendicular to the French doors, so they are what you see first when you walk in. Why is the dining room table off-center? I wanted to keep the central view through my enfilade open. But really, it’s an extravagance today to make a dining room just a dining room. I have people over for dinner, but I also work at my laptop here, play the piano, and host amateur recitals for friends. Whatever’s going on, the cabriole chair legs dance around that deconstructivist table. Swan Lake meets The Rite of Spring? I like to throw in a foreign element, something askew that livens the mix of old and new. On the dining room banquette, we reused the ancient velvet that still hung at these windows when I moved in. It’s a conversation starter at parties to tell guests they’re sitting on Fred Astaire’s curtains. PRODUCED BY DORE T TA SPERDU TO
RIGHT: Striking a balance between intimate and formal, the dining/music room features walls upholstered in subtle Chelsea Editions Diamonds outlined with ebony-painted trim (black warmed with a dab of brown). “I needed a softness here to diffuse the visual ‘noise’ of the high-gloss rooms on either side of this one, but the dark trim still conveys the strength of the architecture,” Kedigian says. A set of 19th-century chairs dressed in Schumacher’s Shock Wave cozies up to a gently worn velvet banquette with P.H. Dorcic bullion fringe and pillows in Holland & Sherry and Dye-Namix fabrics. He used gold paint to dress up the wood table base by Mecox Gardens. The display cabinets have a faux-limestone finish.
58
“I never start on the decorative aspects of a space until I’ve settled on a solid furniture plan,” Kedigian says. He designed the living room sofa and upholstered it in the same Chelsea Editions Diamonds that he used in the dining room, but in another colorway. The club chair is covered in Clarence House’s Neisha Crosland Fleuret Chevron and the corner banquette in Lee Jofa’s Spectrum Velvet, which provides “a fireside amphitheater for views out the French doors.”

CHRISTINE PIT TEL: Your house is filled with all sorts
of exotic treasures. Is travel part of your job? MONICA BHARGAVA: Yes. I do design and product development for both Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn. My team and I are working with vendors all over the world. A trip might start off in France and Italy and then go on to Turkey, India, Hong Kong, and China. Are you visiting factories or flea markets? Both. I try to balance the schedule with a few inspiration stops—flea markets, museums, historical monuments. In Marrakech, the wedding blankets I saw in the souk became pillows for Pottery Barn. In Barcelona, I loved the surprise and the leaps of scale in Gaudí’s mosaic work, and that led to a new line of dinnerware. When you’re traveling, what do you miss most about your house? Other than my daughter and my husband? Well, I miss hanging out in the backyard with a glass of wine. California has such a great indoor/outdoor vibe. It’s a casual, comfortable lifestyle, and I think even the more traditional collections we do for Williams-Sonoma Home get put through that casual filter. This house is a 1960s ranch. I wanted a place that was easy, open, and that I could make my own. We don’t have a formal dining room. We eat in the big kitchen/dining area/office/family room we added, or we eat outside. Do you use the house as a design lab? In my business, the line between work and home is a blur, and they’re constantly influencing each other. This house is my style. I like to surround myself with beautiful things, but the impulse is not really about decorating. It’s more about the story, the sentiment, and the memory that go with each object. That’s why I have a lot of Indian art. I grew up in India. Then I came to the United States to go to university and stayed. I look at your rooms and see white walls, and everything else seems to be either white, brown, or black. Why did you limit your palette? I come from a culture that is full of color. I work with color all day long. But when I’m at home, I want a release from it. That actually allows me to be more objective about color at the office. And for me, a neutral palette is just more calming. It also works really well with my passion for collecting. It became a good filter. I could collect anything, from any culture, and I knew it would all go together— as long as it was white, black, or brown.
You chose a pared-down palette, but it still has energy. And the energy is all in the pattern. And the pattern is in the textiles. I love textiles and pattern! My family was in the textile business back in India, and pattern is part of my DNA. I grew up with windows made of carved-wood lattices. Every column was decorated with pattern. Even the tap for the faucet had a pattern engraved on it. In my own house, I use pattern to add texture and contrast. There’s a certain discipline and simplicity that comes with a neutral palette, but it can be devoid of soul. Pattern is what makes it rich and gives it depth. How do you handle multiple patterns? I layer them. I’ll start with a foundation of plain white linen on the big anchor pieces, like a sofa or a bed. That becomes a great canvas where I can add textiles, and it’s easy to shift them around. I love the concept of layering. It allows me to add more things as I buy them. Clearly you’re not afraid of scale. Every piece of furniture in your living room is big. I like big, generous chairs and sofas, and extralarge coffee tables. The one in the living room is covered with an old leather gym mat—I love the patina! The one in the family room is actually an old dining table, with the legs cut down. I like having expansive surfaces, so I can display all my collections. What’s the point of having them if you can’t enjoy them? And there’s still room to set out a spread of tapas if you like. Every surface is a lesson in display. Look at the living room coffee table. Old breadboards are layered with books and vintage silver candlesticks. Then that new black vase feels richer and deeper, because it’s surrounded by things with a history. The objects on my desk are organized into a pyramid shape. Suitcases stacked with books and artwork create height. The center is dominated by a statement piece—an old Indian alphabet slate. Then little things, like boxes, give you a sense of discovery. I also group art on the walls, which makes you pause and look longer than you would at one individual painting. How do you want your rooms to feel? Beautiful, stylish—and accessible. Nobody wants to live in a museum. If you can’t use the things you’ve bought and loved, then they’re not really a luxury anymore. They’re a burden. If I can’t use it, then it doesn’t enter my home—or the stores. PRODUCED BY DORE T TA SPERDU TO

BARBAR A KING : You must have envisioned an impossibly glamorous woman living here. JAMIE DR AKE: Very glamorous, very urbane. I invented her as the granddaughter of Josephine Baker, the Jazz Age icon. She’s a successful woman in her late 40s who is the special events director of a major fashion magazine. She’s also a single mother whose daughter is working on a master’s degree and living at home. And what prompted that leap of imagination? The minute I saw Walker Tower—a marvelous 1929 Art Deco skyscraper that’s been developed by JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group—I was transported back to a time that was exuberant and forward-thinking, when designers began to use straight lines, geometric patterns, and luxurious materials. Josephine Baker embodied the era, breaking down barriers in a provocative and glitzy manner. I conjured up this client to convey Josephine as a woman of today—while still taking cues from her heyday in Paris—living in a luxury residence in Chelsea. It’s France meets New York. Does her life bear any resemblance to her grandmother’s? She inherited a passion for hosting the most chic, exciting parties, so it was important to have an apartment well-suited for entertaining. That’s why there are flexible seating arrangements in the living room, which is divided into two groupings separated by a chaise. People can sit on the chaise and face the sofa or toward the console that’s set up as a bar. It’s called the Lipstick console— how appropriate is that? Did you have a quick and clear vision of how you’d decorate? I knew immediately how I wanted to lay out the space, as I generally do with all projects. I think I have a gift for seeing things slightly differently than other people might. What did you see differently here? In the dining area, I placed the table not where most people would—by the kitchen—but in front of the fireplace.
In the master bedroom I floated the bed to take advantage of the views, rather than placing it against a wall. You also have a gift for using color in a distinctive way. Much of my use of color is intuitive and painterly, probably because I took so many art classes when I was young. The pink in the living and dining areas, for example, just felt au courant—like the right pink for the moment. It’s a warm coral with a sophisticated, feminine point of view. And it connects to the cityscape. There are spectacular east, west, and south views from the apartment, and you see all these faded redbrick buildings. So it throws your eye out to the views in a subtle way. It seems to glow in a subtle way, too. The base color is Salmon Peach by Benjamin Moore, which has an inherent sort of glow, but then we had a decorative painter apply a light bronze glaze that gives it a pearlescence. The wall color changes as your vantage point changes, mimicking the kind of reflections and variations
In the living room, a Jan De Vliegher painting of a plate hangs above a Hudson Furniture Lipstick console in wood, stainless steel, and bronze. OPPOSITE: Taking center stage in front of the fireplace is a gleaming Henry dining table with an Andes granite top and bronze base from Egg Collective. found in the metals used to craft the great buildings of the Art Deco era. That deep plummy purple in the second bedroom is really sexy. I wasn’t afraid to go dark in there because the room is f looded with light. It creates intimacy during the day and allows the sparkling views to really pop at night. It’s Venetian plaster applied by a team from the Alpha Workshops, an organization that trains people with HIV/AIDS in the decorative arts. I’m chairman of the board, and I always have a little bit of Alpha in my projects. The master bedroom walls are their own kind of view. They’re covered in a digitally printed watercolor, a celestial interpretation that gives you the feeling of being thrust into the sky. And in a floating bed, it becomes a more dreamy experience, as though you’re floating in space, above the clouds. Just as writers have a voice, so do decorators. How would you describe yours? My voice is confident, bold, nuanced, and witty. What are the witty gestures here? Touches such as the wonderful threedimensional wall sculpture over the bed in the daughter’s room, which almost creates a modern canopy. And in the stacks of books on either side of the fireplace that have most of their spines turned away from the viewer. The only ones showing are the few that relate to Paris and New York in the 1920s, so it teases you and makes you wonder what else is in that library. The effect is like graphic art. Boldly graphic. It sort of grabs you by the lapels and pulls you in. Not only that, but it also helped us with a design challenge. You have these two very thin yet somewhat deep side niches, and rather than leaving them empty—or the more predictable solution of putting in a pair of pedestals with vases on top—I created something much more tantalizing. But then again, the whole apartment is tantalizing! DESIGNER VISIONS E XECU T IVE DIREC TOR: A L A NA FRUMK ES PRODUCED BY DAVID M. MURPH Y

FRANCES SCHULTZ: We hear a lot about
‘spare and pared down’ in decorating today, and these rooms are anything but. Charming anachronism or timeless tradition? SCOT ME ACHAM WO OD: I hope I can be charming, anachronistic, and timeless all at once! I certainly feel the apartment recalls the romantic, ‘collected’ style of the Edwardian era. And no one is going to mistake my home for a clean-lined, modern space. I have friends with homes like that and I love them, but they truly are not for me. Even after working all day surrounded by textiles and case goods, the swirling lushness of my place comforts and calms me. How did you get from Louisville, Mississippi, to San Francisco? An odd confluence of events. After college, I moved to Colorado to be a ski-lift attendant. Because my father was in the military when I was growing up, I was always on time, and I was shocked at the number of things for which I got hired. Within months, I was running two stores, playing the organ at church and the piano at cocktail bars, and waiting tables. Renaissance Man meets Energizer Bunny. Good heavens, child. But I began to get tired. That’s when I decided I wanted to work for Ralph Lauren. I was hired first in Vail and then in San Francisco. I was 23 years old, and it was kind of a whim—let’s go to California! I worked with Polo for almost 14 years, until 2001. How did you make the move from clothes to interiors? I was on the sales f loor and then moved into the creative services department. We did all the windows and interior styling—everything but sell clothes. We’d create an English manor house one season and a French beach resort the next. It was an amazing design education—dealing with all the details that make a room sing, layering accessories and madcap pattern-mixing. Is that a coat of arms on the door? It’s original to the building, as are the picture rail moldings and the painting on the living room beams.
All from 1929. That it survived the ’70s is staggering to me. Was the black-and-white hall floor original? No, I painted that myself. I love blackand-white floors because they pull your eye into the space. The hallway is a visual feast in itself. It’s almost six feet wide and lends itself to a nice little library, dark and moody. And I love that big gallery wall opposite the bookcase. What prompted you to paint the ceiling red? I love the chinoiserie chest, and over the course of a long weekend—seven layers of different red paints later—I matched the color of the chest. With all the books and artwork, there needed to be a marquee design note, and that red fit the bill. You’re confident with color. That blue on the living room walls is ‘wow.’ Isn’t it marvelous? It’s an old color from Benjamin Moore called Gentleman’s Gray, though I can’t figure out why they named it that. It’s almost a navy version of turquoise. I love a

dark room. The blue made it feel a little more modern than the olive green it was before. I painted it while I was watching the Oscars. Your bedroom is the epitome of cozy, and yet it is masculine and strong. It is less heavily layered than other parts of the home. The bed is inspired by old English half-testers that give a great sense of privacy. We sized the depth of the wing to be the same as the pillows, so I’m nice and tucked in there. The tweed wallpaper on the ceiling evokes a men’s suit, and the small check balances the largerscaled tartans in the room. Speaking of tartan, is that a Ralph Lauren influence, too? My heritage is Scottish, so some of it is genetic. I have a fascination with tartan and with Scottish history. I’m actually working on a new fabric line of imported custom tartans. And when might we look forward to seeing them? Fingers crossed, in fall of 2014. That is one tiny kitchen. It is the smallest kitchen on earth. I can stand in the middle and touch all four sides. A couple of years ago I brought in extra metal shelving, which gives me more workable counter and storage space. Why did you paint the cabinets black? That was another time I drank too much coffee. With so much going on in the space, black seemed more neutral, and I like the drama of it. It had been brown before, and the black brought it more into the present— and it’s not as predictable. Do you entertain here? I do. Those two little cocktail tables in the living room pop into a closet and a dining table sits there. I gather odd chairs and can seat eight on not much notice. That’s the convertible part of the apartment. As a designer, are you always ‘converting’ something here? My home is such a laboratory. I rotate things in and out of storage, and in a couple of years it will all be pulled apart and reimagined. It’s how I keep things fresh. PRODUCED BY DORE T TA SPERDU TO

CHRISTINE PIT TEL: You design textiles. And now kitchens, too?
Actually, I started out as an interior designer and then turned to textiles when I had kids. But I still take on certain projects. I’ve been working on this client’s house in phases, updating it room by room.
CAITLIN WILSON:
What was the problem with the kitchen?
The 1980s design was looking tired. We wanted to clean it up and let in more light. Did you take down any walls?
No, the kitchen and the breakfast area were always part of one big room, divided in half by that peninsula. The basic layout made sense, although we did move some things around. Like what?
The refrigerator. Originally, it stood to the left of the range, but refrigerators have a way of overwhelming a space. So we decided to move it to another wall, where we could integrate it into the cabinetry more unobtrusively. Then we designed a hutch to fit into the spot where the refrigerator used to be. It makes that area feel much more open, since it has glass-fronted doors instead of solid ones. And it’s a decorative piece. Aesthetically, it gives the room a focal point. And on the other wall, you did a good job of masking the fridge.
That was our cabinetmaker, who made the beautiful paneling. We added a cornice on top and feet on the bottom, which also make the refrigerator look more like a piece of furniture. Why switch to gray paint for all the cabinetry on that wall?
We had already introduced some warm grays into other rooms in the house. And I wanted something dramatic, to create a contrast to all the white. White is a classic color for a kitchen, and I thought it was appropriate for this classic, Colonial-style house. But then the gray gives it 104

a little edge and makes the white look even more crisp and clean. And they both look great against the dark wood floor.
That’s not wood. It’s porcelain tile, made in a lovely shade of gray and laid in a herringbone pattern. It’s a great, durable choice for a family with two dogs. We knew it was going to be tricky to match the original floors in the house, and anyway, we wanted something different. The subway tile on the walls is different, too.
Yes, it’s another spin on a classic, made of Calacatta Gold marble instead of the usual plain white porcelain. The gray veining works with all our grays, and then we picked up the gold in the tile with brass hardware. And brass light fixtures. They’re like the jewelry in the room. But you didn’t stick with brass for the faucets. Why not?
3
When it comes to a faucet, the person who’s going to use it has the final say. And my client likes polished nickel, which happens to look great with all the stainless steel. I like it, too, and I think it’s fine to mix metals. Is that a skylight over the sink?
Yes, and getting the clients to go for that was a feat because all you have to do is say ‘skylight’ and everybody thinks ‘leaks.’ But we needed more natural light, and once we popped it in, it just opened up the whole room. Suddenly it felt magical to stand there and do the dishes. >> 1. Touches of brass: Hicks

And a kind of luminosity, like a Mark Rothko painting. In my new book, Interiors [PowerHouse Books], we set a shot of this tile wall beside a Rothko to show the resemblance. Art is an endless source of inspiration for me. It’s a glamorous bath, but then there’s something refreshingly simple about the shower curtain.
Simplicity is intrinsically elegant, don’t you think? The ice-blue fabric has a beautiful drape and it seems to frame the wall, as if you’re pulling back the curtain on a stage set. I didn’t want to put

any kind of partition— even glass—in front of the tile. Did you notice that it runs from the ceiling to the walls and then continues onto the floor? It wraps one whole side of the room and creates a sense of fluidity. And tranquillity ...
I think a bathroom should feel tranquil. Although the guy who installed the tile almost had a nervous breakdown. He had to lay it all out on the bedroom floor to make sure the colors had the right flow. What inspired the design of the vanity?
I took the classical details from the architecture, by Mark Ferguson and Oscar Shamamian. It’s a pleasure to work with them. A vanity should be highly functional, as well as a beautiful piece of cabinetry. We topped it with the same Thassos marble that surrounds the tub—pure white, no veining. This bathroom
belongs to the wife. The husband has a separate bathroom, with a large walk-in shower. Did you think of the two rooms as twins?
No, they’re more like companion pieces. His has a masculine, tailored look. The space, like hers, is not all that big but it still has presence, thanks to the strong details. Strips of chocolatebrown marble on white marble suggest classical moldings. Mosaic tiles reappear, but they’re all white this time—more clean and crisp. Why choose sconces to flank the mirrors?
They give good light. And it’s easy to customize a shade with a bit of trim— blue for her, brown for him. They each have their own space and some privacy. I’m a big believer in separate bathrooms. I’m sure they’ve been the saving grace in more than a few marriages.
