Hindusthani-Carnatic Raga Equivalent This is a list of approximately equivalent ragas in the Carnatic and Hindusthani traditions. There are a number of Carnatic ragas that do not have a Hindusthani equivalent; the reverse is also true (especially of many ragas in the Bilawal That). Ragas considered different in the Hindusthani tradition often map onto the same raga in Carnatic music. Bhoopali and Deshkar are both equivalent to Mohanam. To me (with a ear attuned to Carnatic prayogas) there seems no difference between Bhoopali/Deshkar and Mohanam. However, the subtle emphasis (nyasa prayogas) for Bhoopali and Deshkar are quite different and should not be confused when performing in the Hindusthani style.

I am not too sure of many of the Hindusthani ragas in the list; I would be happy if someone could verify the accuracy of the equivalents. I have not included many of the ragas in the Todi That -- almost all of them map into derivatives of Subha panthuvarali or Bhavapriya (except Bhoopal Todi which is the exact equivalent of Bhoopalam). Also not included are the ragas in the Darbari and the Kanhra groups almost all of which map into Kanada/Madhyamavathi/Sri or some combinations of these ragas in the arohana and avarohana. The list is quite obviously incomplete. Any additions to it are most welcome. I would also advise people not to take the list too seriously since very very few ragas (mostly those which have been borrowed from one system of music into the other) can be considered to have reasonable equivalents. Most of the items in the list simply indicate similarities.
I'm not aware of the Hindustani equivalents for the following FANTASTIC Carnatic Ragas : Kambodhi Bilahari ShanmukhaPriya SimhendraMadhyamam HariKambhodi ( JhenJhoti ? ) YadukulaKambhodi Bhairavi ( NOT SindhuBhairavi ! ) Mukhari Varali Todi ( NOT Hindustani Todi ! ) Latangi MalayaMarutham Naattai Gaulai KedaraGowlai MayaMalavaGaulai Sahana Saveri Asaveri Aarabi
