Abstract/ Summary:
The objective of the experiment was to understand the effect of heat treatment on the materials properties. In which we discovered that the material that was oil quenched had a higher yield strength and a higher tensile strength whereas the as received material the yield strength and the tensile strength were both low. This data can also be seen on the graph of stress over strain and tension over extension, and also in the picture of the microstructure.
Objective:
To compare the effects of heat treatment on the mechanical and microstructure properties of the 2 O1 tool steel one oil quenched and the other with no treatment done on it.

Discussion/ conclusion:
The effects that the material had that was oil quenched on the strength, the hardness and the microstructure was that oil quenching made the material harder this is due to that most tool steel microstructure is made up of layer of ferrite and cementite which in general is soft and is not good for many application of the metal in this is usually caused by the metal being cooled over a long period. But what quenching does is that it rapidly cools the material and the material structure hardens and this structure is called martensite. The strength of the material also increases for it takes a larger load to break the material approximately a load of 5700N to 5800N.
In the result we see that the oil quenched O1 tool steel length is very close to the original gage length measured before put into the UTS Tensile tester. But in the steel with no treatment we see a big change in the length but the diameter is very close to the original. In the test for tensile we also observed that the oil quenched didn't stretch as much as the non-treated steel.
Application that we can see oil quenching being applied to are in weapon making such as hand weapons like swords and knifes other place the steel can be used after being oil quenched is in industrial tools such as forklifts the fork being oil quench will allow the material to become strong and handle more load, in tools such as wrenches, crow bar and cutting tools for we don't want the steel breaking and hurt people around and or damaging the machine.
We also see that the furnace temperature is 900 degree Celsius and this is due to that most material are heated at 900 degree Celsius but also this so that material can be heated uniformly and through all and also because we want to heat up the ferrite and cementite for when quenched the structure becomes stronger.
In conclusion we were able to meet the objective of the experiment and understand the effect of heat on the properties and the microstructure of the material. In the future I would suggest the team that is doing this experiment to be organized and also there may have been numbers of error in our calculations and error in the equipment that we were using, but most human error due to we rounded up the load when calculating the tensile strength and the results that we have maybe off.
Real life application:
This can be seen in blacksmiths work to harden the material they may be building like a knife, a sword, or even an axe. This can also be seen used in different part of industries to meet a specific hardness for the material they require.
