How to read chord diagrams

Example: C major

Low E string: open; ring finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, medium

finger on the 2nd fret on the D string, G string: open, index finger on the 1st fret of the B string, high E string: open.

Major and Minor open strings chords We begin with the most common chords: in this section you c an learn major and minor c hords in first position (that means that chords are

played on the frets nearest the headstock). These chords use open strings, so, depending on the chord shape, you'll have to leave some

strings unaltered. If in the diagrams you find a 0 near a string, it means that you have to play it without press any fret; if you find a X, then you have to mute the string. In diagrams, major chords are denoted with "maj", while minor chords are denoted with "min". For example, C maj means C major chords, C min means C minor chord.

Putting all together

Once you've memorized minor and major chord shapes, you can start to play chord progressions, in order to practice chords changes and transitions. Here are two nice progressions to try out.

Dominant Seventh Chords

A dominant seventh chord is a major chord with a minor seventh note added. It's a very important chord as it creates a sort of tension that

resolves naturally on the tonic, giving a feeling of conclusion to the progression. In diagrams, dominant chords are denoted with a superscript "7", for example C 7 is a C dominant chord.



Blues progressions are built on dominant chords; here's a classic 12 bar basic blues sequenc e to try:

Movable chord shapes The shapes in the following diagrams are called "movable shapes" because you can move them up or down the neck in order to get a different chord name but with the same quality (major, minor, dominant and so forth). The same way barrè works. With movable shapes we don't play any open strings. If you memorize these movable shapes, you'll can play almost any chord, by placing the chord-shape with the root on the fret that corresponds to the name of the c hord you want to play.

In the diagrams, the root note is marked with a yellow circle. For example, the movable shape of a dominant seventh chord, is the first figure in the following diagram:

If you want to play a F7 chord, you have to place the root (in yellow) on the 8th fret of the A string (that indeed is a F note), see the second figure. With the same logic , if you want to play a G7, you have to place the root on the 10th fret of the A string (indeed a G note), as shown in the third figure.

For a given chord, you can have different shapes, depending on which fret you choice to be the root of you chord. In the following diagrams, for ea c h c hord quality 3 different shapes are proposed.
