Huayna Potosí
Es la montaña más próxima a la ciudad de La Paz a 42 km de distancia, tiene la forma de una imponente pirámide de hielo con tres caras: norte, oeste y sureste.

Montaña situada a 3 km al sureste del refugio Huayna Potosí. En el camino a este glaciar existen hermosas lagunas. La pendiente es fácil y es posible realizar ski de travesía. Al inicio de la ascensión a este glaciar se pueden apreciar unas cuevas de hielo. Sirve como aclimatación y práctica básica de escalada para personas que no tienen experiencia en este deporte. Acceso: Acceso: El acceso se realiza desde el refugio Huayna Potosí, continúa por el acueducto que lleva a la laguna Mamancota. A visit to this place serves as an area for acclimatization and as a training ground for an eventual climb to Huayna Potosi Mountain. The trail is visible from the lodge. At the very end of the Zongo Dam you must cross a cement bridge which leads to a trail which at the same time it leads to a metal tube up to a sign post indicating “Glaciar Huayna Potosí” by continuing through the trail you’ll be arriving to the glacier. tHe return: o 1: Taking the same route back. o 2: At the starting point of the glacier there is a trail that connects to the main road where there is a Cross called the “El Jardín de los Recuerdos” Recuerdos” (The Garden of Memories)

Este camino comunica la cumbre de los Yungas, por el camino El Choro, con el valle de Zongo, a una altura promedio de 4.000 msnm. No existe sendero en algunos lugares. El trayecto pasa por lagos de espectacular belleza, en los que es posible pescar truchas. Acceso: El acceso es por Villa Fátima, desde donde existe transporte regular hasta la cumbre de los Yungas. En Chukura Bajo, la cancha y el cementerio sir ven de referencia para tomar un puente que sale a un sendero, a la izquierda del río Chukura. El ascenso se realiza por un camino de herradura. Access: The access is via the Huayna Potosí base camp and then it follows the route to Mamancota Lagoon (Laguna Canada),
from this point on the climb starts to the pass. This pass is signaled with “Apachetas”. It then, continues through a trail situated on the right which descends to a lagoon. It continues following the course of the Samaña Pampa river, where the Precolumbian Road El Choro is to be found.

en la última parte. En 1898, una expedición austriaca intentó subir por primera vez su cumbre. El primer ascenso fue en mayo de 1919 y lo realizaron Rudolf Dient y Adolf Schulze de nacionalidad alemana.

Pequeña montaña que pertenece al grupo del Huayna Potosí. Su nombre en aymara signica “Lágrima de la madre”.
Es una escalada muy poco practicada por su alto grado de dicultad; generalmente se la hace para aclimatarse a la
altura.

Conocida como Cerro Llapu o Centinela, presenta dos caras sur y suroeste. Tiene la forma de una estela o monolito con un desnivel de 1.400 metros de roca y hielo. Primera ascensión fue realizada por los alemanes R. Wurzer, S. Eriedhuber, W. Bauer, M. Edlinger, L. Kerrshbaumster, R. Striff, el 30 de junio de 1970 en solitario.
Acceso: Tome el camino carretero desde la planta Tiquimani, el cual asciende hasta el Lago Wara - Warani. En media hora se llega a la pared bajando a Umapalca. retorno: El retorno se lo realiza por la cara norte del Tiquimani.

Este recorrido comunica las poblaciones de Chuñavi con Chulumani a través de un camino precolombino. Es poco transitado debido a su difícil acceso. En la ruta se pueden observar cóndores, águilas y colibríes. En 1881 fue recorrida por el famoso explorador Edwin F. Heath. primer dÍA: La Paz - Ventilla - Totoral - Entre Ríos - Chuñavi. Ascender hasta el cerro Khala. seGundo dÍA: Tenga cuidado porque el sendero no es muy marcado por su escaso tránsito. El camino desciende hasta llegar al único pino solitario, allí existe una bifurcación, por la derecha tome el sendero para seguir a Chulumani. tercer dÍA: El sendero continúa por una ladera en subida durante tres horas, para luego descender a Chulumani. El punto de referencia para llegar a Chulumani es la estancia Siquilini.

El 5 y 6 de septiembre de 1898, Sir Martín Conway y sus dos guías italianos escalaron por primera vez el Pico Sur; salieron de la estancia Kanisaya y cruzaron por el Pico del Indi o. Conway relató: “Encontré una soga de cuero de llama en la cumbre dejada por algún indio”. La tradición arma que un campesino
subió al Illimani pero jamás regresó. Esta cima también fue alcanzada por Rolf Boettger, Frederich Fritz y Wilfrid Kuhm durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la expedición dejó en la cumbre una bandera nazi de 60 metros. A los pocos días,
partió una expedición compuesta por el campeón boliviano de ski Jesús Torres y el ingeniero ferroviario inglés E. de la Motte,
para quitar la bandera bandera nazi. rutA: La escalada es muy fría porque el sol sale por la cara opuesta de la montaña, además es difícil por las condiciones del hielo y las grietas. El campo alto se denomina Nido de Cóndores. La ascensión se inicia por una cresta denominada Escalera al Cielo; continúa por una pequeña pared llamada La Bola. A continuación se encuentra una planicie que termina en una pendiente de 50º y 60 metros de altura. Al nal de esta
pared se encuentra una grieta, para cruzarla se camina hacia la izquierda. En este punto se e ncuentra otra dicultad:
una pared de 55º y 200 metros de longitud que concluye en una cima falsa. Desde este lugar, se tarda 2 horas aproximadamente para llegar a la cumbre real. La cumbre es extensa, alcanzarla es como tocar el cielo con las manos. retorno: Por la misma ruta. durAción: dificultAd: recomendAción:

This journey joins the towns of Chuñavi with Chulumani t hrough the Precolumbian Road. However, much used because of its very difcult access. Through this route, notwithstanding, can
be seen condors, eagles and hummingbirds. In 1881 was travelled through by the famous explorer, Mr. Edwin F. Heath.
“God knows how long before!” he said. Tradition afrms that
someone with the leather rope climbed Illimani Mountain, but never returned. During WW II this summit has also been reached by Rolf Boettger, Friderich Fitz and Wilfried Kuhm. They climbed up to plant an enormous Nazi ag. Not long after another expedition led by the Bolivian ski champion Mr. Jesús
Torrez and the British railway engineer, E de La Mote climbed Illimani Mountain to take that Nazi ag out.

At the end of the mountain side there is a crack and to cross it, is to be encountered, a mountain side with a 55º steepness and 200 meters long, although leading to a false summit. From this place, it would take about two hours to reach the real peak. Desde la ciudad de La Paz, siga el camino carretero hacia el Lago Titicaca, tome el desvío desde Patamanta hasta la represa de Tuni Condoriri. En este lugar existe una tranca que impide el paso de vehículos. La caminata de aproximación al campo base (laguna Chiar Khota) es fácil y dura aproximadamente tres horas.

It has pyramidal shape, and it is Europe’s Mountain Matterhorn or Cervino’s big brother. Its presence dominates the Chiar Khota Lagoon base camp. In 1941 Mr. Wilfrid Kuhn climbed by the normal route all by himself. An incredible accomplishment at that time.

La ascensión comprende dos montañas: el Pequeño Alpamayo, montaña de forma piramidal y belleza excepcional, situada al norte de la Laguna Chiar Khota y escondida detrás del pico Tarija. En l969, fue bautizada como Pequeño Alpamayo por la leyenda boliviana del andinismo, Alfredo “Chato” Martínez, miembro vitalicio del Club Andino Boliviano. Fue escalada por primera vez en 1962 por los sudafricanos Irene y Keith Whitelock. Acceso: Desde campo base de la Laguna Chiar Khota, por una senda muy marcada, se toma dirección norte hasta llegar al glaciar. Atravesando el mismo punto, hasta llegar a la primera planicie, la ruta continúa por una pendiente hasta el collado. Posteriormente, la ruta se vuelve más empinada hasta llegar a la cumbre del pico Tarija; desde allí se desciende para volver a escalar el otro lado del Pequeño Alpamayo. El descenso presenta mayores problemas que el ascenso.

Climbing involves two mountains the Pequeño Alpamayo, a pyramidal shape mountain of exceptional beauty which is located north of the Chiar Khota Lagoon. It is “hidden” behind Tarija Mountain. In 1969 was baptized with name of Pequeño Alpamayo by Alfredo Martínez called Chato Martínez, who is a Bolivian legend in alpinism. The rst climb was made in 1962 by the South
Africans Irene and Keith Whitelock. Access: From the Chiar Khota Lagoon base camp, and through a well marked trail take the north direction up to the glacier and then cross it as far as a plain. The route continues through a slope sl ope down to a hill. Thereafter, the route increases its steepness up to Tarija’s Peak. From there you descend and start climbing again but by the other side of Pequeño Alpamayo Mountain. In reality the descent presents more difculties than the climbing.

However, on the map by Lian O’Brien is described as Ala Norte (North Wing). The rst climb was made by Frederic Pimienta, Alain Mesili and Anselme Baud in 1979 on September 19th, and the rst downhill ski was performed by A. Baud on the same day.

Illampu, uno de los dioses de la mitología andina, Kun Tixi Wiracocha, el Hacedor de las Aguas, no es una montaña, es el Olimpo Andino. Se lo observa claramente desde el Lago Titicaca, su acceso es por la localidad de Sorata y para escalar por su ruta normal se debe ir a la población de Ancoma. El Illampu fue escalado por primera vez en 1928 por Hans Pfann, Alfred Horescowsky, Hugo Hortnagel y Edwin Hein (Alemania). Es el macizo septentrional más importante de la Cordillera Real, se extiende de norte a sudeste. También existe otro circuito de media y alta montaña: Illampu – Jancohuma, que parte y llega de Sorata entre 5 a 7 días. Este circuito se encuentra catalogado como uno de los más bellos del mundo. Para el descenso en bicicleta de montaña esta área es virgen e inexplorada y tiene un gran potencial turístico.
Illampu one of the Goddesses of the Andean Mythology Kun Tixi Wiracocha, the purveyor of water. Illampu Mountain is not a mountain, it is the Andean Olympus. It can be seen clearly from Lake Titicaca. The access for the climb through the normal route is from Sorata and it must go to the the town of Ancoma. Illampu Mountain was rst climbed by Hanns Pfann, Alfred Horescowsky, Hugo Hortnagel and Edwin Hein in 1928. It is the most important northern massif of the Cordillera Real, it extends itself from north to souteast and among the most important peaks of the massif are: There is another middle and high mountain circuit which is the Illampu - Jancohuma that departs from Sorata and returns to Sorata Sorata and takes about 5 to 7 days. This circuit has been considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. Mountain cycling still virgin and unexplored. However, it seems that it offers great potential.

Sorata sirvió de inspiración al famoso lólogo viajero y escritor
Demetrio Díaz Villamil, para escribir su libro titulado La Lengua de Adán, en el cual postula que Sorata es el paraíso terrenal. Su hipótesis se basa en que la lengua más primitiva debía ser la de Adán. Hizo un estudio lológico comparando los idiomas
inglés y alemán con el aymara, llegando a la conclusión de que esta última es la madre de todas las lenguas. El acceso a este grupo de montañas es la población de Sorata, punto de partida para ascensiones al Ancohuma e lllampu y caminatas a la laguna Chilata, Glaciar, Camino del Oro, Mapiri y circuito Illampu. l á a : Pico Schulze, con 5.943 metros, Illampu, 6.368 metros; Pico Norte, 6.060 metros; Pico Esperanza, 5.760 metros; Agujas Yacuma Jancohuma 6.427 metros; Haucana, 6.200 metros; Nevado Pirámide, 5.907 metros y Jankopiti, 5.875 metros.

En 1919, R. Dienst y A. Schulze, luego de tres semanas buscando un camino más corto, cruzaron los lagos por encima del Huarisata. Luego de una semana de tallas peligrosas llegaron por n al gran glaciar del Jancohuma, logro fantástico
tomando en cuenta el material rudimentario de los años 20. Los dos hombres, efectivamente acababan de realizar una hazaña sin igual sobre un pico de 8.000 metros. (La Cordillera Real de Los Andes, Alain Mesili).

Sorata was the inspiration for the famous writer philologist and traveler, Mr. Demetrio Diaz Villamil, who in his book entitled Adam’s Language postulates that Sorata was indeed paradise on earth. His hypothesis is based upon the fact that the most primitive language must have been Adam’s. He made a philologial study by which he compares english and german with aymara and his conclusion was that the latter is actually the mother of all languages. The access to this group of mountains is by the town of Sorata, which is also the departing point for climbing Ancohuma and Illampu Mountains, and hikes to the Chilata Lagoon, the Glacier, Camino de Oro, Mapiri and the Illampu circuit. th a a: The Schulze Peak (5,943 meters), Illampu (6,368 meters), North Peak (6,060 meters), Esperanza Peak (5,760 meters), Agujas Yacuma, Jancohuma (6,427 meters), Huacana (6,200 meters), Piramide Mountain (5,907 meters) and Jankopiti (5,875 meters).

Subsequently to the town of Viacha and continuing by the trail to the Chilata Lagoon, where, by the way, there are to be found some precolumbian ruins. dAY tWo: From Lagoon Chilata the pathway continues up to the Titisani pass where the mine of the same name is located. Subsequently the trail goes by a “Morrena” of rocks until it reaches the Glacier Lagoon, which is the base camp of Ancohuma Mountain. indeed considering the rudimentary equipment available in the twenties. These two men actually accomplished an incredible feat comparable to 8,000 meters. (The Cordillera Real of the Andes, by Alain Mesili).
Access: From the Glacier Lagoon take a southern direction by the “Morrena” up to the Jancohuma Glacier; the e ntry point to this
glacier is to be found at Campo Alto. The following day and night a camp full of cracks would have to be crossed. At dawn a big plain is to be found and at the extreme of which is situated Jancohuma Mountain with its many different climbing routes.

Apolobamba y Ulla Ulla fueron declaradas por la UNESCO, en 1977, como reservas de la Biósfera. Ulla Ulla mantiene el mayor número de vicuñas de Bolivia, está situada al norte del departamento de La Paz, se caracteriza por la cultura Kallawaya (médicos naturistas) y por sus textiles. Charazani es conocida por sus aguas termales con propiedades propiedades curativas. Asimismo, Pelechuco es región de enlace entre el altiplano y el trópico; donde en medio de la neblina vaga el alma de Carlos Franck, quien llegó a esa poblacion a mediados de 1860 y se dedicó a la explotación de la goma, convirtiéndose en uno de los hombres más ricos de Bolivia. Aún se pueden ver el piano gigante que llegó sobre lomos de bestias, el sistema de calefacción y los cuadros. Franck murió en 1922 y está enterrado en la iglesia de Santiago de Pelechuco.
Apolobamba and Ulla Ulla declared as reserves of the Biosphere by Unesco in 1977. 1977. Ulla Ulla houses the greatest amounts of vicuñas in Bolivia. It is located in the north part of the department of La Paz. This region is also well known for the Kallawaya culture (or naturist doctors) and for its textiles. The town of Charazani for its thermal waters with healing properties. However, Pelechuco is the linking region between the altiplano (The high Plateau) and the tropics. It is also the place where it is said the the soul of Mr. Carlos Franck roams around in the middle of the fog. Mr. Franck arrived in the middle of the 1860’s and dedicated himself to the explotation of rubber and became one of the richest men in Bolivia. In Pelechuco his grand piano is still to be seen and was brough by mules, he had also a heating system and a colection of paintings. Mr. Franck died in 1922 and is burried in the church of Santiago de Pelechuco.

El trekking en la cordillera de Apolobamba implica ascender los 4.500 y 5.100 metros de altura. Durante todo el trayecto se observan las montañas que conforman la cordillera de Apolobamba. Atravesando el paso de Sunchulli, el grupo Cuchillo se encuentra al alcance de la mano. Al nalizar la caminata se pasa por las faldas del Akamani, la
montaña mágica de los kallawayas. La población de Curva, capital mundial de los médicos itinerantes y el camino precolombino de Niño Corini, conducen hasta Charazani donde se encuentran las aguas termales, nal del viaje.
Acceso: A Pelechuco los buses salen los días miércoles de la cancha El Tejar (teléfono 2 – 811993), el viaje dura 10 horas.

Inca Cancha, aquí se encuentra un ascenso hacia “las mil gradas” que llega a Kellacota. El Akamani es sagrado para la cultura Kallawaya, signica achachila (espíritu de la montaña).
cuArto dÍA: Hacia el norte se encuentra el Valle de Sunchulli cerca del grupo Cuchillo, en medio de éste se encuentra el paso del mismo nombre a 5.100 msnm. El trekking se realiza por un camino carretero, descendiendo hasta el pueblo de Piedra Grande, desde los 4.500 metros hasta los 5.100 metros Quinto dÍA: Piedra Grande - Pelechuco (camino precolombino bien conservado).

Desde aquí se observa la Cordillera de Apolobamba, en cuyo fondo se distingue el nevado Akamani, sagrado para la cultura Kallawaya. Posteriormente, se encuentra la población Niño Corini y al fondo del valle está la capital kallawaya de Curva, que se encuentra en la cima de la montaña. Desde el cruce del río hasta Curva existe un camino precolombino muy importante y en la población de Lagunas existe un refugio a 10 minutos de Curva. tercer dÍA: Se precisa un porteador. Upon nishing the treck you
should be passing by the Mountain side of Akamani Mountain, the sacred Mountain of the Kallawayas. The population of Curva, the world’s capital of the Kallawayas, and the Precolumbian Route of the Niño Corini to Tuni should lead you to the thermal waters of Charazani and the end of the journey. Deep in the valley and at the summit of the mountain is situated Curva the Capital of the Kallawayas. From the river crossing up to Curva there is an important precolumbian road. There is also a guesthouse in the town of Lagunas about 10 minutes away from Curva.
dAY tHree: It will be needed the services of porters to carry the loads. The beginning of the trek offers no difculties. However, it becomes more tricky as you get closer to the rst pass (4,700 masl), and subsequently you descend 1,000 meters to the
Inca Cancha. At this location there is a hill called the thousand steps leading to Kellacota. Akamani Mountain is the sacred mountain to the Kallawaya culture, and it signies “ Achachila” which means The Spirit

dAY fiVe: Trek starts at Piedra Grande all the way to Pelechuco via a well-preserved precolumbian road. tHe return: Buses at Pelechuco and Charazani remain over night for an early departure to La Paz, the following morning. importAnt dAtA: It is a hard trip mainly because of the altitudes. During the hike one must be crossing several mountain passes. However, it is one of the most beautiful hikes in Bolivia. Must carry food supplies for a week, in addition to warm clothing. It is recommended to hire the services of a guide. Unfortunately, there are no maps of the region. The ideal season for this journey is from April to August. Whereby during the day becomes quite hot, while during the night becomes quite cold.
