Leading Worldwide due to Innovative Technology
Our 8D series of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is an extremely successful product concept. Since its introduction back in 1968, Siemens has installed more than 17 000 switchbays world-wide in all climatic zones of the earth. More than 230 000 years of bay operation have been recorded since.
We manufacture turnkey slutins precisely matching yur specificatins.
Intensive research work and continuous innovative improvement of the prototypes have ultimately led to today’s generation of gas-insulated metalencapsulated switchgear, a world leader in terms of: ■ Economic efficiency ■ High reliability ■ Safe encapsulation ■ High degree of gas-tightness ■ Long service life ■ Low life-cycle and maintenance costs ■ Good accessibility and ergonomics ■ High availability ■ Safe operation even under extreme environmental conditions In 1976, we supplied the first gas-insulated substation for a rated voltage of 420 kV. A permanent process of improvement has led to today’s 8DQ1, suitable for a voltage range of up to 550 kV. With the 8DQ1 system, a new generation of gasinsulated switchgear is available on the market, notable for its wide range of applications.

Flexibility due to Modular Design
A fundamental feature f ur gas-insulated switchgear is the high degree f versatility prvided by a mdular design. Accrding t their respective functins, the cmpnents are hused either individually and/r cmbined in gastight enclsures. With a remarkably small variety f active and passive mdules, it is pssible t meet all custmary bus schemes. The 8DQ1 with its single-phase encapsulated design minimizes dielectric and dynamic stresses. The cast-aluminum enclsures ensure a lightweight and crrsin-resistant system. The lw bay weight results in minr flr-lading. The flanges at all inter-mdule jints are equipped with high pressure O-ring seals t ensure a high gas tightness. The cnductrs are linked by cupling cntacts, capable f absrbing mvements due t thermal expansin. Where necessary, the jints are accessible via penings which are clsed with gastight and pressure-resistant cvers.

Sulphur hexafluride (SF 6) is used as the insulating and arc quenching medium. Any misture r decmpsitin prducts are cmpletely absrbed by static filters in the gas cmpartments, which are attached t the inside f the cvers f the access penings. SF 6 is cmpletely sealed in and will nt be cnsumed. Thus, with prper use there is n envirnmental danger.

Stored-energy spring mechanism State-of-the-art production techniques allow using compact housing. Since the closing and opening springs are hused in the perating mechanism, the structure is cmpact and sturdy. This design results in a small number f mving parts. The use f rller bearings and the maintenance-free spring mechanism are a prerequisite fr decades f reliable peratin. Prven design principles, such as vibratin-islated latches and lad-free islatin f the charging mechanism, are retained. The advantages f the stred-energy spring mechanism: ■ One principle fr rated vltages frm 72.5 up t 550 kV ■ High reliability due t lw perating energy ■ Simple principle f peratin ■ Switching state cntrllable at all times ■ Lw-maintenance, ecnmical with a lng service life ■ Lw envirnmental impact
Arc-quenching principle 1 2 3 4 5 6
Interrupter unit The interrupter unit used in the circuit-breaker fr arc-quenching perates accrding t the dynamic self-cmpressin principle. This principle requires nly lw perating energy thus keeping the mechanical stresses on the whole circuit breaker to a minimum. The current path In the clsed psitin, the perating current flws thrugh the main cntacts (2, 10). The arcing cntacts (1, 7) are plugged in parallel t the main cntacts. Interruption of operating current During the breaking peratin, the main cntact (10) pens and the current cmmutates t the arcing cntacts (1, 7), which are still clsed. This avids ersin f the main cntact. As the breaking peratin cntinues, the arcing cntact pens and an arc frms between the cntacts (1) and (7). At the same time, the cntact cylinder (10) cmpresses the SF 6 gas lcated in the cmpressin vlume (4). The cmpressed arc-quenching gas flws thrugh the heating vlume (11) int the cntact gap and extinguishes the arc.

Interruption of fault current In the case f large shr t-circuit currents, the gas between the arcing cntacts (1) and (7) is heated by the arc energy and is driven int the heating vlume (11) with high pressure. When the current passes thrugh zer, the gas flws back frm the heating volume through the nozzle (9) and quenches the arc. The valve (3) of the contact cylinder (10) prevents the high-pressure gas frm entering the heating vlume. Thus, the arc quenching energy des nt have t be supplied by the perating mechanism.

Disconnecting switches Discnnecting switches assure a dielectrically safe gap between bth cntacts fr secure islatin f system areas with different ptential, e.g. busbar discnnecting switches islating a whle feeder frm the busbar. Cast-resin bushings keep the cntact system in place and the pressurized gas serves as the islating medium between live parts and the metal husing. The mdule is available with up t tw earthing switches and the necessary cnnectrs fr different types f adjacent mdules. Discnnecting switches can be built as separate gas cmpartments by themselves with their wn mnitring r be cmbined with surrunding mdules. Discnnecting switch
Earthing switches
Pin-type earthing switch
Earthing switches (e.g. wrk-in-prgress earthing switches r busbar earthing switches) are used fr prperly cnnecting deenergized live parts f the high vltage system t the grund. On the utging side f the feeders a make-prf versin (high-speed) is frequently used t eliminate risk t the GIS system, e.g. if the ppsite side was nt switched ff prperly. In the insulated design they are used fr measuring purpses and fr testing prtectin relays. In 8DQ1 switchgear, the earthing switches are f a pin-type design. They are preferably used in cnjunctin with discnnectrs, but can als be supplied as separate mdules with their wn husing. With the pin-type earthing switch, the earthing pin at earth ptential is pushed int the mating cntact. Make-prf earthing switches are equipped with a stred-energy spring mechanism. The spring can be recharged either with a mtr r manually in an emergency. Common features of disconnecting and earthing switches ■ The three ples f a bay are cupled mechanically. ■ All three ples are cmmnly perated by ne mtr mechanism. ■ Auxiliary switches and ON/OFF indicatrs are frictin-lcked. ■ Identical mtr perating mechanisms are used fr discnnecting and earthing switches. ■ Manual emergency peratin is integrated. ■ Enclsures can be fitted with inspectin windws n request.

Instrument transformers Bth current and vltage transfrmers are used fr measuring and prtectin purpses. Current transformer The current transfrmers are f the single-phase inductive type and preferably lcated n the utging side f the circuit-breaker. They can, hwever, be lcated at any pint within the bay r substatin. The high-vltage cnductr frms the primary winding. The cres with the secndary windings are designed fr the specific prject t cmply with the requirements fr accuracy, rating etc. Different ratis can be achieved via taps in the secndary winding. Secndary cnnectins are ruted thrugh a gas-tight bushing plate t a terminal bx. The pressurized SF 6 gas in the mdule serves as the primary insulatin.
Current transfrmer
The encapsulated design prvides very high reliability in terms f electrmagnetic cmpatibility (EMC).
Voltage transformer Each single-phase inductive vltage transfrmer is encapsulated in its wn husing frming a separate gas-tight mdule. Each vltage transfrmer cnsists f the fllwing main cmpnents: ■ The primary winding ■ One r mre secndary windings (frming ne cil) ■ An irn cre The pressurized gas inside the enclsure tgether with the film insulatin prvides insulatin against high vltage. The high vltage cnnectin t the switchgear is established by means f the primary cnductr, which is supprted by a gas-tight bushing. The secndary cnnectins are ruted via a gas-tight bushing plate t the terminal bx.
Vltage transfrmer
Surge arrester If required, encapsulated surge arresters can be directly cnnected. Their purpse is t limit any vervltages. Their active parts cnsist f metal-xide resistrs with a strngly nn-linear current/vltage characteristic. The arrester is generally flange-jinted t the switchgear via a gas-tight bushing. In the tank f the arrester mdule, there is an inspectin hle, thrugh which the internal cnductr can be inspected. At the bttm there are the cnnectins fr gas mnitring, arrester testing and an peratin cunter. Surge arrester

Termination modules The terminatin mdules cnnect the bays f the gas-insulated switchgear, e.g. t the fllwing: ■ Overhead lines ■ Transfrmer r reactr ■ Cables They frm the transitin between the GIS with SF6 gas insulatin and ther high vltage systems with different insulating media. Cable termination This mdule acts as a l ink between the metalenclsed gas-insulated switchgear and the highvltage cable. All types f standard high-vltage cables can be cnnected. The inspectin hle als prvides the cnnecting flange fr the high-vltage cable-testing set. During high-vltage cable testing, the primary cnductr between the cable sealing end and the switchgear can be remved.
Cable terminatin
SF6 /air ter mination The SF6 /air terminatin enables the cnnectin f the gas-insulated switchgear t air-insulated cmpnents r verhead lines. This terminatin is a cmbinatin f an angle-type mdule and an utdr/SF6 bushing. The length, shape-frm and creepage distance f the utdr/SF 6 bushing can be adapted t varius requirements regarding insulatin crdinatin, minimum clearance r degree f pllutin.

Transformer tube-termination The transfrmer tube-terminatin enables a direct tube cnnectin frm the GIS t an il-insulated transfrmer r reactr. Fr this purpse, the transfrmer bushing must be il-tight, gas-tight and pressure- resistant. Temperature-related mvements f the switchgear and the transfrmer as well as the settling f fundatins are absrbed by expansin jints in the tube cnnectin.

Busbar module The busbar mdules f adjacent bays are cnnected with expansin jints which absrb cnstructinal tlerances and temperature-related mvements in lngitudinal as well as transverse directin t the busbar. Axially guided sliding cntacts between the cnductrs cmpensate temperature-related expansins in cnductr length. A sectinalizer (t increase the availability f the switchgear) can be fitted withut any additinal measures.

Control and Monitoring Reliable and Flexible Control and Protection System Proven switchgear control Rbust electrical cmpnents are used t cntrl and mnitr circuit-breakers as well as ther switchgear cmpnents. All elements necessary fr the cntrl and mnitring f circuit-breaker, discnnecting and earthing switches are incrprated in the respective cntrl unit. The perating mechanisms are pre-tested at the factry t reduce cmmissining time t a minimum and t avid any failures n-site. Gas monitoring Gas-tight insulating partitins subdivide each switchgear bay int separate gas cmpartments (e.g. circuit-breakers with current transfrmer, discnnecting switches, vltage transfrmers, surge arresters and terminatin mdules). The gas cmpartments are cnstantly mnitred by density mnitrs prviding alarm and blcking signals via cntacts.
Reliable and flexible control and protection system Lcal cntrl is easily accessible in the separately installed lcal cntrl cubicle. As an ptin, the feeder prtectin can als be included in the same cubicle. The lcal cntrl cubicle is nrmally placed ppsite the switchgear, but installatins in a nearby separate cntrl rm are als custmary. Screened cntrl cables are used fr the cnnectins between the lcal cntrl cubicle and the high-vltage equipment. Cded plug cnnectrs are used t cut the csts f installatin and minimize the risk f cabling fai lures. On request, we can supply ur high-vltage switchgear with any f the cmmnly available digital cntrl and prtectin systems. Standard interfaces in the local control allow the connection of ■ Cnventinal cntrl systems with prtective interlcking and cntrl panels ■ Digital cntrl and prtectin systems with user-friendly bay cntrllers and statin autmatin with PC wrkstatins (HMI) ■ Intelligent, fully netwrked digital cntrl and prtectin systems with additinal mnitring and remte diagnstic functins. Thanks t the extensive range f Siemens cntrl and prtectin systems, we can ffer yu a wide range f custmized cncepts frm a single surce.

Transport, Installation, Commissioning, Maintenance Transport T facilitate easy transprt and n-site installatin, ur switchgear assemblies are split int ptimized shipping units with emphasis n ease-f-handling. Restrictins n transprt dimensins usually d nt allw transprting a whle bay in ne unit. The means f transprt, rutes and n-site handling are taken int cnsideratin in the prcess. All shipping units are mechanically and dielectrically tested befre delivery. In the case f mdules which cntain switching devices, all perating-mechanism attachments are preset at the factry prir t shipment. All flanges where the mdules are t be jined t ther equipment are prtected and sealed with transprt cvers. All gds are packed accrding t means, duratin and rute f transprt as well as in line with cnditins and duratin f strage. Shipments within Eurpe are nrmally dne by rad. Switchgears supplied t verseas cuntries are sealed in suitable shipping units with seawrthy packing taking int accunt any temprary strage that may be necessary. Installation and erection The delivery f the bays in just a few, easy-t-handle transprt units reduces the time and effort needed for on-site installation. The cntrl unit f the circuitbreaker is pre-assembled n the supprting frame at the factry. Detailed installatin instructins and the use f relatively few special tls allw easy and rapid installatin f the switchgear. It can even be effected by yur wn persnnel under the supervisin f an experienced supervisr frm Siemens. Our training facilities are at yur dispsal.
Commissioning After completion of the assembly work on site all switching devices and electrical circuits fr cntrlling and mnitring are tested t ensure prper electrical and mechanical functin f the whle system. All flanges are duble-checked fr tightness especially thse fitted n site. Cmmissining wrk n the primary sectin ends with the high-vltage test t verify that all installatin wrk, including the wrk dne inside the enclsure, has been dne crrectly. All tests are perfrmed in accrdance with IEC standards and the results are dcumented in the final test reprts. Maintenance Our SF6-insulated switchgear installatins are designed and manufactured t prvide an ptimum balance in design, manufacturing, peratin and maintenance. Due t the tightly-sealed enclsure, a minimum f maintenance is needed and the GIS-system can even be regarded as maintenancefree under nrmal perating cnditins. Subject t envirnmental cnditins visual inspectins are recmmended. A visual inspectin is carried ut bay by bay withut any need fr utages r the pening f gas cmpartments. A majr inspectin is nt recmmended befre 25 years f peratin.

Quality Assurance
A cnsistent quality management system supprted by ur emplyees makes sure that we prduce highquality gas-insulated switchgears. The system was certified in 1983 in accrdance with CSA Z299 and again in 1989 accrding t DIN EN ISO 9001. The quality management system is prcess-riented and subject t cntinuus imprvement. Certificatin accrding t DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 was passed with flying clrs in 2003. As early as 1994 the envirnmental prtectin system accrding t DIN EN ISO 14001 was implemented as an additin t the existing quality management system and successfully certified. One f the fundamental milestnes in develping testing cmpetence was the certificatin f the test labs accrding t ISO/IEC 17025 (previusly EN 45001) in 1992. Frm that pint n, they have been cnsidered independent.
14
The quality management and envirnmental prtectin systems cver every single prcess in ur prducts’ life-cycles, frm marketing t after-sales service. Regular management reviews and internal audits of all processes based n the cnsistent dcumentatin f all prcesses relevant t quality and envirnmental prtectin ensure that the system is efficient and up-t-date at all times and that appropriate measures are taken to continuously imprve it. The quality f ur switchgear cnsequently meets even the highest requirements. In additin t cnsistent quality management and envirnmental prtectin, the special “clean” areas set up in the production workshops are an important contribution twards the high quality f ur gas-insulated switchgear. Cmprehensive manufacturing inspectins and rutine testing f individual cmpnents, sub-assemblies and mdules all ensure reliable peratin f the verall prduct. Mechanical rutine and high-vltage tests f the cmplete bay r cmplete shipping units verify that the manufactured quality cmplies with the standards. Suitable packing prvides fr the switchgear’s safe arrival at its destinatin.
