2 NOTES FROM THE ARRANGER
Funga Alafia is a traditional song of welcome sung throughout many parts of Africa that has often been attributed to the Hausa tribes of Nigeria. The word “alafia,” a Hausa word of greeting, and the word “ashé” are the equivalent of the expressions “good health,” “blessings,” and “peace.”
In keeping with African traditions, simple motions have been added to emphasize the joyful spirit of the song. An original melody has been added to further express the good will emanating from this infectious chant. Pronunciation is provided beneath the lyrics and simple traditional African rhythm parts are offered to enhance and complete the traditional musical feel. Jill Gallina
