X Factor contestants have taken a path path sim simila ilarr to their their male male U.K. U.K. Five aspiring solo singers audition for a singing competition, and after failing to progress individually, they come back as a group. After enduring weeks of intense competition, mentoring by Simon Cowell and amassing a huge fanbase, they make it to the nals, ultimately leaving the competition in third place. If this sounds like the beginning of world domination by a boy band named One Direction on the U.K. version of „X Factor,“ that‘s because it is. Finishing in third place behind teen diva Carly Rose Sonenclar and winner Tate Tate Stevens, Fifth Harmony long was considered an underdog in the competition. Although mentor Cowell saw a spark in the girls from their rst per formance during the judges’ homes round, they suffered from confusing name changes (rst LYLAS, then 1432 and nally Fifth Harm Har mony) in the early stages of competition. But it was the girls’ seminal performance of Ellie Goulding’s Goulding’ s “Anything Could Happen” that cemented their status as a force to be reckoned with. “I knew from the girls’ rst performance at judges’ homes in Miami that we’d done the right thing,” said Cowell. “The chemistry between the Fifth Harmony girls both on- and offstage is fantastic. They are really great girls who have become best friends. They’re great fun to be around, and most importantly importantly,, they are all incredibly talented.”
