letter from the editor Lillian Too’s Feng Shui Extravaganza 2016 in KL
S
job in the world? And what kind of President would he make? While his campaign started out as a big joke, the polls are now swaying in his favour, and like he points out, “If I weren’t a successful person, it wouldn’t work so well. Voters have great confidence in me because I really have been successful.” He is no doubt a showman, and yes even a TV ratings machine, but will he make the cut? Lillian gives her opinion.
This issue we have a collection of some really fabulous stories. When the art and science of feng shui first came into prominence with the earliest of Lillian Too’s books “The Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui”, it started a worldwide craze where everything feng shui and related became all the rage. Even primetime TV shows like FRIENDS and THE SIMPSONS had their token feng shui episodes. Then came the Zen period, when some advocates of “feng shui” started popularizing clutterclearing and minimalist living.
From the movie world, we feature Emma Watson. Everybody’s favourite witch from the Harry Potter era is now all grown up and finding her voice. She was appointed to the United Nations as a Women Goodwill Ambassador last year and has since made their women’s rights campaign HeForShe her own. Together with her humanitarian work, she continues to make movies at a prolific pace, with at least three soon-to-be-released films featuring big-name co-stars like Tom Hanks, Ethan Hawke and Luke Evans. She has a long bucket list, but looks to be checking off each task with great efficiency. We take a look at her Paht Chee chart with some interesting findings.
eptember for us is when we officially start gearing up for the coming year. We have just sent our Fortune & Feng Shui 2016 books for each of the 12 animal signs to print and these will be available for sale before the month is up. Lillian Too’s Feng Shui Extravaganza 2016 tickets are also available now through our usual channels (MPH, www.wofs.com and SISTIC) at Early Bird discounts for those who get their tickets early, so do book your seats soon!
Lillian was then approached by publishers to write about this minimalism and decluttering to further elaborate on her expertise. She thought about it, but then said, “minimalism is not feng shui!” In this issue, she introduces the art of Maximalist Living, a powerful mindset she has always subscribed to and lived by, one which assumes a state of abundance in one’s life always. This mode of living permeates one’s lifestyle from the way you think, to the way you dress, to the way you decorate your home… but try it! It is uplifting, it is liberating and it attracts truly fabulous good luck your way. Our personality this issue has to be Donald Trump, billionaire magnate and US Presidential hopeful. Goddess Tara, with Khenpo Delek Rinpoche leading a one-of-a-kind Puja, we bring you full coverage of this very special afternoon. Friends and followers flew in from all around the world to attend this event, and among them this year were Lynn and Phil Conder from Perth who share their incredible real-life story of how the trip of a lifetime manifested for them following last year’s King Gesar retreat. Hanni Lim brings all the details of this powerful aspect of feng shui – the Spiritual aspect. I know so many friends wanting to start families, and in today’s world where women work, settle down to family life later, and juggle so many different responsibilities and aspects of living, fertility has become a real issue. IVF doctors are more in demand than ever, with couples having greater difficulty conceiving or carrying to term. Hanni Lim’s case study zeroes in on this matter, where a simple feng shui tweak was all it took to turn a childless couple’s flagging marriage around, blessing them with two beautiful children. We also have a Pregnancy Taboos list for all expectant mothers to take note of! Helen Oon brings us Korea in London, a festival showcasing all that this colourful country has to offer. Their marketing motto made full use of the K prefix, from their world-famous K-pop, to K-fashion, K-cuisine
and K-content. Perhaps they too have heard about the numerological power of the letter K, a “master double”. She also introduces us to the lovely Diana Culey, a Malaysian designer making a name for herself in the UK. Dato Kee Hua Chee meanwhile interviews Chef McDang, a member of the Thai Royal family who is lending his name and expertise to the newly opened Chakri Palace, whose latest location in KLCC mall serves up Royal Thai cuisine (different from your regular Thai fare!) Phillip Lim goes deeper with his Paht Chee, explaining how to ensure your main door conforms to both your feng shui Kua number and your Four Pillars birth chart to maximize the benefits it can bring you. Chris Yeo discusses swimming pools and how to ensure they look good as well as being an auspicious addition to your home décor, while Lim Han Jin gives a snapshot on the Metal element in feng shui. We have some even more exciting news and offerings, but that can wait till next issue. In the meantime, stay tuned to all our social network accounts for day-to-day updates!

Emma Watson is boldly redefining what it means to be a feminist, and in so doing, is winning a lot of people over.
EMMA WATSON THE NEW FACE OF FEMINISM
BY JENNIFER TOO
Emma Watson burst onto the world’s consciousness as Hermione Granger, or “the Harry Potter girl” in the most successful film franchise in Hollywood history. Catapulted into the limelight at age 9, and filming almost one movie a year for a whole decade, she grew up in the public eye, and by the time she was 17, acknowledged that she technically never had to work for money again. But then for Emma Watson, money was never the end goal. She has much bigger plans than that.
F
rom an early age, Emma Watson learned to be very independent. Born in Paris, she moved back to her native England when she was 5 when her parents divorced. Growing up, her parents shared custody of her and her younger brother, with her mother in Oxford and her father in London. Because her parents worked, she stayed back at school most days, taking part in every extracurricular and after-school activity imaginable. On set, unlike her fellow child actors, she didn’t have her parents as chaperone because they had to work. Says Emma, “My parents couldn’t take the time off, they had careers and they weren’t together. They couldn’t swap in and out like Rupert Grint or Dan Radcliffe’s parents.” But she never felt neglected. This however led to her getting used to making a lot of her own choices. Before Harry Potter, she had never acted commercially, although she was a keen member of the Oxford branch of the Stagecoach Theatre Arts company. It was her acting teacher there who recommended her to casting agents looking for a little girl to play Hermione. Like her Harry Potter co-stars, she had to go through 8 rounds of auditions to get the part, but writer JK Rowling, who retained creative input in the movie versions of her books, supported Emma Watson’s bid from the start when watching her first screentest, and fought for her to get the part. Indeed, as the series unfolded, Emma Watson started to eclipse both her male co-stars SEPTEMBER 2015| F E N G SHUIWORLD

Emma Watson was appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador in 2014.
Her brand of feminism encapsulates what the crux of feng shui is about. Says Emma, “We need yin and yang. We need balance. We need female representation.”
Emma is determined to use her fame to bring attention to causes that she believes in.
Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint in terms of popularity, awards and critiques. Today, of the three Harry Potter child stars from the series, she is probably the best known. While we will always love her as the bossy and self-assured Hermione, she has successfully shaken off her Hermione persona and taken on more and more diverse material, sometimes well beyond her age. Playing Ili in Darren Aronofsky’s NOAH opposite Russell Crowe, she channels a young mother fighting for the life of her newborn babies most convincingly, despite obviously never having gone through childbirth or motherhood before. In 2009, she was ranked 6th on Forbes’ list of “Most Valuable Young Stars” and by 2010, she was named Hollywood’s highest paid female star, having earned £19 million in 2009. In interview, she has a confidence that belies her age; if you go back and watch her in her 11 year old interviews, she had that then too. She attended Dragon School in Oxford, followed by Headington School also in Oxford, and kept up her studies during filming. During gaps in filming, she would go back to school, and when asked if it was difficult to work and study, she said it was like having the best of both worlds. “My life felt like both parts were a holiday, coz I’d get a break from school and go and do something really exciting and fun. Then I’d get to come back again and see all my friends.” She achieved straight A’s in all her GCSEs as well as all her A levels, and earned herself a place at Brown University in America. She was also offered a placed at
the University of Cambridge, but she chose America because of the breadth and choice offered in the American curriculum. When it came to renewing her contract for Harry Potter to finish the series after the 5th movie, Emma didn’t sign on immediately. She wanted to pursue college, because acting wasn’t the only thing in her life. She said, “I wanted to have my cake and eat it. I wanted to do everything.” But at the same time, she said it was “difficult to let go of a role like Hermione.” After a series of talks with the producers to stagger filming to allow her to pursue University at the same time, she signed on. Emma Watson is definitely someone terrifically driven. As well as excelling in both the world of acting and academia, in 2009 she added modelling work to her resume with contracts with Burberry and Lancome, and got involved in People Tree, a fair trade fashion brand. Says Emma, “Fashion is such a great way to empower people and give them skills. Rather than give cash to charity, you can help people by buying the clothes they make and supporting the things they take pride in.” Today, she has become a leading voice in humanitarian work, having been appointed as a United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014. She helped launch the “HeForShe” UN campaign for gender equality with a speech at the UN Headquarters in New York City in September of last year. She wrote the speech herself, with no speech writers. At first, when she got the appointment, she started writing out drafts, sending them on to her family and friends to vet. But everyone had a differing viewpoint of the angle she should take, and what she should change or tweak, that she herself started to get really confused. www.fswmag.com

So she threw all those drafts away and wrote a brand new one without showing it to anyone before delivering her address. She aims to win over both men and women in the fight for equality. Says Emma, “We’re never ever going to be able to fly as high unless we’re both in support of each other.” Her brand of feminism encapsulates what the crux of feng shui is about. Says Emma, “We need yin and yang. We need balance. We need female representation.” She observed that feminism over the years had become a dirty word, synonymous with man-hating. But this was not the case at all. Her fight for feminism is really a fight for equality in every sense of the word, which perhaps could be more accurately termed as humanism. Just as women should have equal rights as men in the worlds of business, politics and society – with equal pay and equal opportunities – men similarly ought to have equal rights to display their more sensitive side, to be allowed to play just as large a role in parenting, to not be scared to appear less “macho” without being ostracized. She is boldly redefining what it means to be a feminist – and in so doing, she is winning a lot of people over. Just as she did in school when she straddled two worlds, she continues to do so today. In between all her film work, she champions her cause and her work with the UN. Says Emma, “You’re not going to get rid of me until I get to see an equal number of female prime ministers and presidents and CEOs, and more men that feel like it’s OK to express how they really feel about things. And while I live in a world where there is a narrowly defined definition of masculinity and femininity, I’m just not 14

Emma Watson has come a long way since her Harry Potter days.
gonna go.” A look at her Paht Chee chart gives an inkling to what really lies behind that steely backbone of a personality. We can see that her self-element is METAL, accompanied by her Month and Day heavenly stems also being Metal. Her Day and Month earthly branches are both EARTH, which produce more METAL, making her a super STRONG METAL person. Her Hour Pillar earthly branch brings yet more Metal. When a chart is so terrifically skewed, it makes it easy to catapult to overnight fame and success when one goes through a period that brings the chart back into balance. But her STRONG METAL persona imbues her with an unshakeable resolve when pursuing the things she believes in, while her obvious intellect ensures her success and popularity continue to grow.
When Emma Watson announced to the world she was going to University, she says, “People kind of got confused. They were like, why would you want to do that? If you want to be an actress, surely you are already doing what you want to do.” But that was just it. Emma Watson doesn’t want to just be an actress, although of course she is not going to give that world up. She has a string of upcoming movies, with Ethan Hawke in REGRESSION, Tom Hanks in THE CIRCLE and Luke Evans in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. She also has a list of directors and actors she says she would LOVE to work with in the future. So she is not done yet. Not by far. But at the same time, she will not just act. She will act and then some. From the look of things, Emma Watson will have her cake and eat it. www.fswmag.com

INVOKING POWERFUL BLESSINGS FROM THE GODDESS TARA IN HER BIGGEST SPIRITUAL FENG SHUI EVENT YET! By HANNI LIM
Every year, we look forward to our annual Spiritual Feng Shui show in KL and Singapore, where Lillian Too devotes two consecutive Sundays to impart spiritual feng shui knowledge to her annual audience of friends and fans! Last year Lillian invited Khenpo Delek Rinpoche to perform King Gesar’s Protector Puja and the “Hooking Abundance ritual” for prosperity! This year Lillian goes BIG on placing the Goddess TARA firmly in our consciousness. She once again invites her dear friend and lama, Khenpo Delek Rinpoche to bestow precious oral transmissions of the 21 TARA Praises and Mantras!

venues as the number of people attending our events continues to grow. It is heart-warming to receive the awesome support and feedback that we do; this is what keeps us coming back, but more importantly, it gives us the conviction that we are on the right track, knowing that there is a definite hunger for greater spirituality, and instinctively, a deep need to seek out the right kind of guidance that enables all those who attend the Event to tap the vast, infinite and powerful forces of the spiritual realms. It tells us that we are very much in sync with the energy vibrations of the current Kaliyoga age, an era where we are see an explosion of spiritual awareness and a desire to connect deeply with our inner selves and lie in a state of such wonderful Mindfulness becoming more aware than ever that there is indeed a third dimension, and a fourth and fifth… to the practice of living auspiciously and meaningfully. Spiritual feng shui methods bring swift and tangible results. We see it manifesting in our own lives as well as the lives of others! We receive wonderful letters from our students and fans who attend our spiritual events and follow Lillian’s advice to the tee. Our students rave about the

miracles unfolding in their daily lives and are always keen to share their stories with us (read Lynne and Phil Conder’s letter in this issue)! Lillian began giving lectures on Spiritual Feng Shui five years ago. Since then we’ve seen a rise in the number of feng shui masters who have come out to reveal that they also use spiritual methods. While we celebrate the sharing of such powerful ancient knowledge, we also recognize that there are spiritual methods being taught that are NOT SAFE to practise.
Here is where we want to caution our readers on this subject. You must be aware that there are white spiritual feng shui methods and black spiritual feng shui methods. To practise spiritual feng shui correctly and safely, you must be very sure you are learning the white methods.
White spiritual feng shui methods are always beneficial, and the motivation that gives it power is always pure and good. The black methods do not tap the white forces of the cosmic realm. They tap the darker forces, which can be harmful if one does not know how to have the right spiritual protection or if one cannot call on a strong and stable life force and spiritual essence. It is important to be aware of this crucial distinction between white and black practices. It is for this reason that Lillian is now introducing her audience to the PRACTICE OF TARA, which is very much a white practice known by everyone of the Buddhist Traditions. Especially for this year and next year, both 2015 and 2016 are known in astrological terms as “dark years”. Dark years are years where the cosmic and worldly energy forces are severely afflicted. Natural disasters and tragedies increase in such years. When the energy vibrations are dark, we need white magic practices to shine a light through the darkness. Black years are not necessarily unlucky years; they are just black in the sense of there being greater illness and death, with energies being more quarrelsome.

TARA – A POWERFUL WHITE PRACTICE Tara is the ultimate female Buddha. She is an enlightened being and is thus full of compassion and wisdom. As a fully enlightened being, Tara sets no conditions to helping anyone. If you request her help with sincerity and pure good motivation, Tara will always answer and come to your aid. There is no necessity to convert into Buddhism and there are no “spiritual debts” to repay later in return for her help. She helps because she personifies the ultimate virtue of bodhicitta, which means kindness to all… With Tara, you can always be sure that you’re on the right track. You can be 100% sure that you’re engaging in clean spiritual methods that always lead to beneficial outcomes. Those who are schooled in spiritual language call the practice of Tara a white practice. This means that it is a peaceful (and powerful) practice that leads to love, harmony, happiness and goodwill. The TARA practice is not an Ordinary kind of white practice!
The Practice of Tara is an extraordinary kind of practice that surpasses all others in scale, power and completeness. For every worldly or spiritual problem you may be experiencing in your life, there is a manifestation of Tara that provides the right kind of help. There really is nothing that Tara cannot help you with. Tara is skillful and intelligent; her guidance is never wrong! We spend a good deal of time explaining this because
www.fswmag.com
it is so vital to have this confidence in Tara, and to feel secure that what you are practising is genuinely good and real. When we start engaging in spiritual feng shui, our senses become more sensitive to the invisible forces around us and how they affect our lives. These forces have always been there, they have always affected our lives, but now that we are armed with the methods of spiritual feng shui, we have the ability to harness these invisible forces to change our lives and the lives of others for the better. These invisible energies around us can be good, but they can also be evil. When we rely on Tara’s Goddess energy and protection, we are protected from all categories of bad forces, and aided by all the good forces of the cosmic realms. This is the powerful benefit of practising Tara! In Lillian’s spiritual feng shui talk, she taught her audience six easy ways to practice TARA and to invite her Goddess energy into our lives:
THE PRESENCE OF TARA 1 INVITE
This is the first step – to invite the image of Tara into your home. Tara
appears in over 1000 different forms, but her principle form is GREEN in colour. Her right hand is in the mudra of granting your wishes, and her left hand sports the triple gem mudra while holding a blue utpala flower that represents her unlimited and unparalleled kindness. Tara can also appear in the colours of white, blue, yellow and red. You can invite a thangka print of Tara or a statue of Tara! Choose a Tara you feel an affinity with, or be like Lillian and have them all!
THE NINE TARA MANDALA 2 INVITE
This is the celestial abode of Tara. The Nine Tara Mandala comprises a three-dimensional palace that houses the Nine Taras: Green Tara at the top, four outer Taras at the cardinal directions and the four inner Taras in the secondary directions. The four outer Taras protect us from harm that originates from external forces – violence, robbery, imprisonment, natural disasters and black magic. The outer Taras also prevent us from inflicting the same dangers on others. The four inner Taras protect us from harm brought by destructive internal emotions – either from ourselves, or from others: jealousy, stupidity, arrogance, attachment and anger. Just by having the Nine Tara Mandala in our home, we benefit from Tara’s protection, and at the same time, we channel the magical blessings of Tara into the energy of our home.

WEAR THE ENERGY OF TARA
The easiest way to come under Tara’s protection and guidance is to wear the energy of Tara. This allows her Goddess energy to be near you at all times. Amulet pendants made in her image, watches imprinted with her mandala, mantra necklaces and Tara’s seed syllable TAM in gold carry the subtle energies of Tara. When we wear them, our auric fields merge with the energy of Tara and this is how we create an invisible veil of protection around us. Lillian has designed many different Tara pendants and scarves to suit different tastes and budgets! Pick one that you love, and wear it everywhere you go, especially when you travel.
OFFERINGS TO TARA 4MAKE
When we make offerings to Tara, we accumulate a spiritual bank of “brownie points” that translates into prosperity and abundance! The most basic set of offerings to Tara are the eight offerings. These are eight bowls that represent the following: water for drinking, water for washing, flowers, incense, candlelight, food, perfume and music. Each of these offerings has a special significance, and when we offer them to Tara, we create the spiritual merit to receive it back from Tara! For example, offering flowers to Tara brings beauty. Th e more flowers we offer to Tara, the more

beautiful and attractive we appear to others! Offering candles brings intelligence and wisdom! Children who light candles to Tara increase their knowledge and improve their powers of analysis! In addition to the eight offerings, Lillian also highlighted the significance of making these other offerings: i. Mandala Offering – This is most powerful for attracting prosperity and wealth. A mandala represents the entire universe! The mandala offering encompasses the symbolic representations of the sun and moon, eight offering goddesses, the seven precious royal emblems, four wish-granting emblems, parasol and victory banner. ii. Wish Granting Trees – Offering wish granting trees to Tara brings spiritual, material and emotional growth! iii. Serkhem Offering of Juice and Milk – This is very beneficial to offer at least once a month on Tara Day, which falls on the 8th day of the Tibetan lunar calendar. The serkhem offering comprise of pouring milk or/and juice over a chalice filled with five kinds of grain.
THE PRAISES and MANTRAS of TARA 5CHANT
Tara’s mantra is OM TARE TUTTARE SOHA. This is her essence mantra that invokes all the Taras! To get really close to Tara, Lillian advises her audience to chant this mantra and recite the praises to the 21 Taras daily! To e m p owe r e ve r yo n e w h o attended, Lillian invited Khenpo Delek Rinpoche for the afternoon session to give the complete oral transmission of the praises and mantras of the 21 Taras! It was truly magical! For those of you who were not able to attend our event on the day, you can still benefit from watching the video which we will be making available through Lillian Too’s Mandala Ezine. You can also join us in practising the praises to the 21 TARAs once a month through our webcast online. To participate, write to us at
[email protected] if you wish to join us!
THE MEDITATIONS OF TARA 6PERFORM
Finally, Lillian taught her audience two powerful meditations that can be used to solve all our problems with the help of Tara. The first meditation is a “Wishfulfilling Meditation”, a technique for increasing prosperity, abundance, intelligence, long life and success! The second visualisation technique she taught her audience is specifically for overcoming difficult situations with others! This “Obstacle Removal” meditation can transform even the most difficult boss into our allies and friends!

Tara appears in a variety of forms; but mainly she manifests in white, yellow, red, green and blue. Lillian explained that these five colours of Tara have great importance as they symbolize the five categories of magical powers she is able to perform. To channel these kinds of blessings from each of the five coloured Taras, Lillian designed five different brass mirrors with the image and mantras of the Five Taras. Just by having these five mirrors, one is able to utilize these powers to improve situations in their own lives. Here is a summary of what Lillian explained on the day, and how the mirrors can be activated:
WHITE
TARA
epitomizes the magical siddhi of Pacifying and Healing. When we use the Mirror of White Tara, we channel her power to pacify ourselves and others. White Tara calms anger and reduces hostile emotions. She can also extend life, heal diseases and nullify poisons. The mantra for activating the White Tara mirror is OM TARE TUTTARE TURE PRAJNA HRIM HRIM SOHA. Whenever someone is angry at you, reflect their face into the mirror to calm them down! When someone you know is ill, run White Tara’s mirror over their crown down to their feet and back up again. Do this as you chant the mantra.
YELLOW TARA specializes in increasing. The most popular Ye l l o w Ta r a is known as Vasudhara, the Goddess of Wealth and Abundance. She increases prosperity, wealth and assets. Yellow Tara can also be called upon to increase one’s life force, one’s lung-ta and one’s spiritual knowledge. The mantra for activating Yellow Tara’s mirror for Increasing is OM TARE TUTTARE TURE
www.fswmag.com
MAMA BASU PUSHTUM KURU SOHA. Use the Yellow Tara mirror to reflect whatever you would like to increase – i.e. your house, your money, etc as you chant the mantra.
R E D TA R A ’ s specialty is control or enthrallment. She raises our confidence levels and helps us develop skills to influence and control others. When we supplicate Red Tara, we develop a special kind of charisma that makes us irresistible to those around us. Our power of speech multiplies, and we find ourselves able to persuade or dissuade others. Re d Ta r a’s m i r r o r i s activated by the mantra OM TARE TUTTARE TURE B O D H I C H I T TA SOHA. Use this mirror daily to enhance personal charisma and authority. Especially vital for anyone in a leadership role.
BLUE TARA helps us to subdue difficult people and cope with severe hostile situations. She can remove danger, violence, black magic and dark spells. If someone you know is under some kind of spell, you can reflect him/her into Blue Tara’s mirror to help remove the affliction. Blue Tara keeps you safe from enemies and just by carrying her mirror, you come under her powerful protection. The Blue Tara mirror can be activated by the mantra: OM TARE TUTTARE TURE BENZA TAKA HANA LITSA PHAT SOHA.
GREEN TARA embodies the collective powers of the Taras in all her manifestations. She swiftly conquers all obstacles that stand in our way to success and attaining our wishes. Green Tara is particularly effective for repelling jealousy from others. All career professionals can benefit from Green Tara’s mirror. Activate the mirror with Tara’s mantra: OM TARE TUTTARE SOHA.

any years ago while I was living in New Zealand, Patrick and I became friends with a lovely English couple who lived in the same neighborhood as us. Mary* and I got to know each other through work. She represented the school who was one of my clients at the time I was working at a digital web firm. Mary and her husband Andrew* came from Kent (UK) and they moved to New Zealand because they wanted to be able to afford a “beach and batch” lifestyle. Mary is a secondary school

teacher, and Andrew was a Network consultant in one of New Zealand’s largest IT consulting firms. They were such a lovely and beautiful couple... truly the nicest and most polite people we have ever met! Things looked very cordial and picture perfect from the outside, but as I got to know them better, I realized that all was not as hunky-dory as it seemed. Mary and I became dog-walking buddies. We met up every weekend to take our pooches out for walks in the park near our houses. She had a gorgeous Golden Retriever named Katy and I had a bouncy little Jack
Russell named Gypsy. One day as we were having one of our walks around the park, I plucked up the courage to ask her a very personal question. “Mary… you don’t have to answer this, but I was wondering why you and Andrew don’t seem to want to have children?” It was then that Mary started tearing up as she poured her heart out to me. She told me that she and Andrew loved children. In fact, she and Andrew got married while she was already pregnant with their first child! As soon as they got married, they moved into their new home. Unfortunately, soon after moving in,
www.fswmag.com
Mary miscarried at five months! A year after the miscarriage, Mary fell pregnant with their second child. They were both over the moon but again, tragedy struck. Her second pregnancy did not make it past four months this time. And then, a year after her second miscarriage, Mary got pregnant again. This time, the pregnancy didn’t make it beyond the first trimester! After their third miscarriage, things between Andrew and Mary started to fall apart. Mary spiralled into a state of depression, and Andrew began to withdraw into his man-cave. He refused to talk about any of their miscarriages and by the end of the year, he had turned their third bedroom (which was allocated as a nursery) into a store room for his bicycles and tramping gear. He even went so far as to remove all the nursery decorations and repainted the walls a dark blue. A year passed and they stopped talking about having children. When Mary suggested they look at adoption options, he would fold his arms and not talk at all. They stopped going out on date nights. And they stopped having sex. Whenever Mary initiated anything in the bedroom, he would turn away and ignore her advances. Another year passed and Mary
began teaching night classes at the school to avoid Andrew when he got home. Andrew also started working late and weekends. Both would speak to each other or have meals together only when friends came over for dinner. Conversation was minimal – only mundane topics like paying bills, running errands or taking Katy to the vet, or fixing a broken faucet. Things got so bad that Mary began entertaining thoughts of divorce. Finally, Mary confronted Andrew and issued him an ultimatum: she told him that their marriage was over unless he agreed to start seeing a therapist. Both then began attending couples’ counselling sessions. By the time I met them, they had already been seeing a counsellor for eight months and things seemed to have improved slightly. At least they were talking and laughing with each other again. Even so, they were still avoiding the topic of adoption or having babies. By the time she finished telling me all this, she had cried so much that her t-shirt was soaking wet! I had to give her a big hug. I could not believe that all this was happening behind this “happy couple” veneer that I saw! I suggested to Mary that I could take a look at the feng shui of her house. At the time, Mary had not even
heard about feng shui, but she was very open to my idea. I explained to her that feng shui was an ancient Chinese art of arranging furniture to channel good energy into the home, and she just said to me “Yes. I need good energy now! But I would like to wait till Andrew is out as he’s not keen on friends visiting his bedroom.” That very same weekend, I came over when she called me. “Andrew has gone tramping so he’s going to be out for half the day! Come over now!” I hurried over with my compass and when I got there, I realized exactly what was wrong! And luckily it was not difficult to fix! The good news was that all the important sectors of the house were intact. There were no Southwest or Northwest afflictions in her home. Both Andrew and Mary shared the same Kua number – and their home was facing their Nien Yen direction! This was a very good sign – it meant that from a feng shui point of view, this couple had a real chance of establishing a family! The Nien Yen direction is a family and descendants direction and this was also probably the reason why they had not split up yet! The main feng shui problem was their bedroom! Their bedroom was

located in the WEST – which is the sector that represents descendants. The intrinsic element of the West is a METAL. But their bedroom was decorated entirely in RED – the element of FIRE! In the feng shui element cycle, Fire destroys Metal – and the red colour scheme was destroying their descendants luck!
But worse than that – directly on top of their bed, Mary had installed a huge designer ballshaped lighting feature! It was a beautiful lighting feature, and really big – as large as one of those Swiss exercise balls! This large designer ball lighting feature was hanging directly above the bed in such a way that when she slept, it rested about 2 feet directly above her belly! Mary told me that this was the lighting fixture that sold her the house - she thought it was so special and it has been in their bedroom since they moved in after their wedding! I advised her to remove the lighting fixture immediately, and replace it with a simple dome ceiling light. I explained to her that this light fixture was what caused her to have her miscarriages. It was beautiful – but definitely it was hanging in a very UNSUITABLE place! I advised her to move it elsewhere and I also suggested she place a framed photograph of a beautiful baby in the West corner of her bedroom. Mary was a little skeptical – but she felt that it was time to do something. She told me that that the red colour scheme and that light was a regular source of tension with Andrew. He didn’t like the big lighting fixture to be placed above the bed and had always wanted to move it into the dining room! He also preferred a more neutral colour for the bedroom! We agreed to keep this as a secret from Andrew. But over the next three months, Mary was able to persuade

Andrew to help her redecorate their bedroom according to all my suggestions. Here is what they did: t ɨ FZSFQBJOUFEUIFCFESPPNB lovely yellowish-cream shade – which I explained was very good for enhancing the West. Yellow-cream colours bring the element of earth into the bedroom which would strengthen the descendants luck in the West and also enhance her marriage. t 4IF QMBDFE MPUT PG OBUVSBM crystals in the West and Southwest corner of her bedroom. She welcomed this suggestion as she was also a collector of crystals. t 4IFQMBDFEBQIPUPHSBQIPGB group of smiling babies in the West – in a lovely gold frame studded with crystals too! t 'JOBMMZ TIF SFNPWFE UIF lighting-fixture above her bed and replaced it with a simple ceiling light. The designer light fixture went into the dining room as Andrew had always wanted!
As they worked on their makeover project together, things between her and Andrew starting getting better! Their redecoration brought them close again as Andrew loved housepainting, and he was glad to have a new project to keep himself busy over the weekends. He was also thrilled that she finally decided to remove that light and even happier when she suggested they paint their bedroom a neutral beige! By Christmas that year, Mary was pregnant again! And by August the following year, their first daughter Carrie was born! I visited them at the hospital after Carrie was born and honestly, I have never seen a happier set of parents! Today, Mary and Andrew have TWO lovely children! Their son James was born just three years after Carrie. It just goes to show how important it is to ensure that nothing is placed above the bed when sleeping. This very simple change offered her a fourth chance at having children and saved her marriage. Since then, Mary has become a fan of feng shui. Her new house by the beach has been decorated according to feng shui colours appropriate for all the different sectors according to the Pa Kua.

THE ART OF LIVING
MAXIMALLY… The art of living maximally is a powerful mindset that assumes a state of abundance in one’s life always. This is a mental attitude that generates a life of plenty, where you make sure there is an abundance of good food on the table, plenty of beautiful clothes to wear, lots of cash to spend. You are always thinking big, aiming high. Yours is a state of mind that propels you towards attaining the best of yourself. You dare to think big, dare to dine like a king, dare to dream enormous dreams, dare to live beyond your limits, not just occasionally but always, and spontaneously. Constantly programming yourself for prosperity, and forever rejecting a scarcity mindset. For this to be your reality, you should surround yourself with abundance, breathe and live abundance, until this abundance becomes a part of you. BY LILLIAN TOO

DINING IN ABUNDANCE
There is always more than enough food on your table. When you eat at home, the dining table should always be laid out with many dishes, and at least visually, the scene should be one of filling up the table space to its maximum. This must suggest choice and variety of food.
28
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
The Chinese believe that at least once a day, you should have a meal where food is laid out like there is not enough space to fit all your dishes. The food can be served altogether or be served one course at a time, in which case there should be at least eight courses. And food should be served with all the decorations, on large plates and deep bowls. The mindset
must be one of plenty. There should not be any lingering or subconscious fear that you are spending too much OR you are serving too much on the table OR that the food will go to waste. These are negative thoughts and they are the result of scarcity thinking. It is always better to have too much than to have too little. This is the key that unlocks a confidence that leads to a state of abundance! Wealthy people NEVER worry about there being too much food on the table. When they eat with the family, they dine with quantity and quality; when they invite guests to dinner there is an even greater show of abundance. There are bigger serving bowls, more courses and a show of greater opulence. This generates yang chi which in turn attracts greater prosperity into the home. Meals served when guests are around must look like a banquet. Reject scarcity mentality and minimalist thinking. This kind of negativity becomes an obstacle to your success path. It causes you to fumble and stumble. If you are entertaining a client or business associate, you will appear nervous and lacking in confidence. If out on a date, you will project an image of stinginess. If you are a guest, you will definitely look like a loser if you appear uncomfortable with a wellstocked table. But dine in abundance and you will come across empowered and confident. You will look like the winner you are, someone who knows that your flow of plenty is a continuing flow.

This not only gives your home such depth of character, it also suggests you have the time, the inclination, the eye for beautiful things and more importantly, the money and good taste to appreciate the fine things in life. Living amongst things you love is living in abundance. It emphasizes how you are maximizing the energy of your space. Nothing attracts a greater mindset than this. Each time you look at your welldecorated room, filled with so many things you love, you become aware of their presence; that they are there for you to savour and enjoy, and with this realization, you begin to develop a sense of appreciation. And when you appreciate your possessions, your furniture, your

your home look like you lack the means to have all that you need to live comfortably. Living minimally is a very limiting state to be in. It is neither comfortable nor stimulating. Living maximally surrounded by the warmth of beautiful possessions that spell wealth and abundance is a far more stimulating state to be in, and also a lot more comfortable. Hence go for the most comfortable plush lush of sofas and chairs. Let your living room have lots of comfortable sitting space. Have well-decorated tables and sideboards. Have walls made beautiful by decorative art and antique screens. Let your plants be placed inside collectible porcelain. Have curtains that keep the glare out. Have beautiful windows that bring the sunlight in. Have decorative lamp shades that bring subdued light that is bright enough in all the right places, and have touches of elegance that suggest taste and breeding. Focus on emphasizing abundance, not on the lack of it. Let your living area suggest depth and creativity. Let the space be clear of clutter, but not clear of statement pieces such as having a culturally rich corner that showcases a set of your antique furniture… and also create other charming corners that get lit up by auspicious carpets and coffee table books, and lots of other things that make you feel great.

tables, your decorative pieces, your collectibles, your home, your space, your life and all the things you have so successfully displayed for your daily enjoyment... that is when you will also start to deeply appreciate your friends, your family, your inclinations, your work, and most of all, your wonderful life! This calms your mind. The appreciation of your life soothes your soul and turns whatever may be making you feel sour at any particular moment melt away; and instantly, all that is positive and happy in you emerges. This turns your mind to the opportunities that have come your way. Each day, you see all that you may have missed, and in time, just sitting in your home, all you have invested in it to make it special to you will manifest wonderful realizations. These open your vibrations and frequencies to the greater abundance that is coming your way even as you appreciate what you already have. Year 2016. He has a winning slogan, “ M A K E A M E R I C A G R E AT AGAIN”, something that seems to be resonating with Americans across the neo-political divide. Everyone is watching, and we are as fascinated and as entertained as everyone else. These days I am taking him seriously as he plays a robust national reality game. His campaign is totally unconventional; he refuses to play
ball with the political big shots; he is direct, arrogant, even insulting and definitely not diplomatic. He enacts the magnificent tycoon to the hilt. Asked why he is so interesting and why so many people are tuning in to watch, he says simply, “It’s because I am rich!” He is most likely not wrong. We all find him irresistible because he is a billionaire who keeps talking and talking and everything coming out of his mouth makes us laugh… but he also wins our grudging respect! Go watch his series of interviews with CNN’s Anderson Cooper and you will see what I mean. It seems like Donald Trump is the global main event of the Summer of 2015, the ultimate Reality Star in the ultimate reality show, and even as he marches steadily towards achieving his quest of wrenching the Republican nomination from a clutch of Presidential hopefuls, he could even go on to beat the candidate of the Democratic Party (be it Hillary Clinton or Bernie Saunders or some other!) Watching his children, including a younger daughter, Tiffany Trump (from second wife Marla Maples) and another son Barron, by his current wife Melania Trump, and indeed his entire family, I am filled with huge respect for this man. They all work for the Trump organization. Donald and his three elder children all graduated from Wharton Business School. Tiffany is currently studying there and is likely to join the family firm. Together they have helped Donald the Patriarch make the family name T-R-U-M-P probably one of the world’s biggest and most highly-admired brands. The name TRUMP spells wealth, elegance
and classy living. Trump brands the properties he develops around the world, alone or in joint venture with other property developers. But Trump is also into high-end hotels, entertainment, resorts, casinos and golf courses. Donald is a bestselling writer and a big time TELEVISION star of his APPRENTICE series, which has survived six seasons and is still going strong, now helmed as much by his daughter and sons as by him, and of course, he owns the highly lucrative MISS AMERICA and MISS UNIVERSE franchise. His three older children play crucial roles in his business empire, valued according to him at around US$20 billion, although his detractors scoff at this figure. Nearer to U$2 billion they say! Who cares. He is still a billionaire and a mighty showy one at that! He has two private jets, lives at the apex of New York luxury and has a beautiful wife – in short ALL the sort of wealth trimmings that the rest of the world’s wealthy want to emulate, and maybe all of us mere mortals too. He surely epitomizes the American dream.

JEB BUSH or one of his rivals will come up alongside him and pull ahead. They are saying that Trump’s strategy of inciting controversy for the sake of controversy is definitely a risky campaign strategy. They are also saying that Trump is unlikely to really want to be President, as tempting as it might seem. Being President would mean giving up direct control of his global business empire. He would also have to forfeit the hundreds of millions of dollars he gets in endorsement deals each year. Four years as President, cut off from all business dealings and steady cash flow from endorsements could seriously put his financial situation at risk. Wishful thinking surely!

Now he is in effect saying to all his countrymen, Look at me! I am rich, I am clever, I am a great manager, a wonderful innovator, a successful businessman, a great father, and I am beholden to no one. I am using my own money to run. I can make this country great again. I can be the best President you ever had. One has to admit his rhetoric has enormous appeal; and being a true blue American, he surely knows the way to win the hearts and minds of his countrymen. As of this month,

Donald is a bestselling writer and a big time TELEVISION star of his APPRENTICE series, which has survived six seasons and is still going strong, now helmed as much by his daughter and sons as by him. Donald Trump’s run is looking good! Trump critics on every side are getting increasingly desperate. They want to believe that Trump’s current popularity is as high as it will ever go. They point to the miserable 1% climb in his popularity among likely Republican voters after the Fox News debate - from 23% to 24% - to suggest that he is simply getting the vocal fringe vote. They are praying that TRUMP will not emerge victorious at the Iowa Presidential Republican caucus, that most likely
Donald Trump’s bus alone with the “Make America Great Again” slogan extending across its sides creates an irresistible oasis of celebrity politics amid a desert of minivans and shopping carts wherever it goes, whether or not Donald Trump is inside. For many Americans watching the Trump Presidential campaign, all eyes must be on Iowa. This is not just about a billionaire talking bombastically on television. In Iowa, Trump must beat all the veteran

politicians at their own game. He has to count not on television rhetoric but on the stumping reality of political campaigning; so he is building one of the most extensive field organizations in the Republican field. He is laying the groundwork and he has a sizeable Iowa staff of 10 paid operatives, a number that is fast growing. This is the clearest sign yet that the Donald Trump, the unconventional candidate, is looking beyond his summer media surge as he takes aim to win the firstin-the-nation caucuses in February 2016. And should he win and the Republican Party kicks in with real, solid backing, Donald Trump would be well on his way to actually becoming America’s new President. I took a bet with a good friend of mine in Singapore. I am saying Donald Trump will win the Republican nomination. He is betting against me. The bet is dinner anywhere in the world selected by the one who wins! My friend is betting against me because he does not take Trump seriously. He describes Trump as a joke, with his wacky over-the-top statements. Indeed, after Trump’s first, incendiary remark about Mexican immigrants, things got complicated. Univision dropped its coverage of his Miss America pageant. NBC cancelled his Celebrity Apprentice show. Businesses started to distance themselves from him. But something else happened. The anti-Mexican insult inadvertently struck a chord with the fringe element of America that once embraced the tea party and knighted Sarah Palin’s strident vice-presidential run four years ago. Suddenly, Trump has started pulling ahead in the polls, even as the political world shakes in alarm. Suddenly he is a force to be reckoned with. So we are seeing disenfranchised supporters of the American electorate steadily growing behind Trump. Political pundits bristle at his popularity, strongly insisting his brand of blowing hot air cannot sustain his popularity. They say that Trump must present concrete

Whatever anyone says, Donald Trump’s presence in the race is profoundly impacting the political landscape of America. The reason the experts are getting it all wrong about Donald Trump is because they continue to look in all the wrong places for evidence that proves he can never become President. They refuse to entertain the unnerving possibility that a politician can win simply by inspiring the voters, getting them seriously worked up about issues that are raw and real to them – about

jobs, about making enough money to live a decent life! Trump knows the deal. He can play the political game conventionally too. So he has promised to issue specific policy plans, and who’s to doubt that what he puts on the table to the electorate will be as good as, or even better than that put forth by other candidates? His money can buy him plenty of politically savvy policy paper writers. Nevertheless, in the end, it is not the dry position papers nor high sounding economics nor clever promises that win votes. It seems these days it is the Donald’s brand of reality show type unscripted spontaneous script that appeals to them. Plus a BIG dose of success luck! In 2016, Donald Trump enjoys very good lung ta, the Windhorse luck that propels him to great success. He is a Fire Dog who enjoys excellent health luck but suffers a net cash outflow in presidential election year; not surprisingly! He is likely to become several hundred million dollars poorer. But surely becoming the most powerful man in the world is worth it! America has elected a movie star to the White House, they can elect a Magnate.

BODY SIGNALS YOU can’t By LILLIAN TOO
IGNORE I
had been looking forward to August. We had arranged to put on the SPIRITUAL FENG SHUI event in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Preparing for it had given me a wonderful feeling of joyousness; and as it turned it, both events were awesome, for me mentally and also spiritually. I benefitted as much as those who came, and for us here at WORLD OF FENG SHUI, reconnecting with old friends who arrived from near and far – from our home ground, KL and Singapore and also from as far away as USA, Russia, Australia, Japan, India, Indonesia and Philippines meant a great deal. The energy in the hall on both occasions was powerfully potent. I felt it and many in the audience did too. What may not have been so obvious was that my right leg was in a great deal of pain, to an extent that I could barely walk. In between the sessions, I had to apply tons of Counterpain and wear a knee guard to add strength to
38

my walk. It started the day before we flew to Singapore and continued through the week into the following Sunday of the KL event. But here’s the thing… on both Sundays as soon as I stepped onto the stage, my legs felt normal, and it was no problem at all standing through the day, but the moment I stepped off the stage, the pains came shooting back and they were – trust me - quite excruciating! Then two days after the KL event concluded, I woke up unable to move my right side. Turns out I had suffered what the doctors refer to as TIA – Transient Ischemic Attack; not quite a stroke but feels like one with the limbs becoming completely numb, not with pain but with a heavy immobility that is quite scary. My right shoulder through my right upper and lower arms, as well as my thighs and lower legs froze up. Naturally, I assumed it was a mild stroke as I could not get out of bed. Thank goodness I always have ASPIRIN next to my bed, so
www.fswmag.com
I immediately took two tablets. I knew this would help, as aspirin is a blood thinner, which aids the flow of blood. Two days earlier, I had been assailed by a tingling sensation on my right side as I was having a shower. At that time, taking two aspirins had caused the tingling to subside. What I did not realize was that little episode of the tingling nerve ends was actually a warning. I had not followed up on the warning. For sure, this had been a mistake. Then I did something even more foolish. I was investigating the possibilities of Essential Oils and a friend came over to my place the day after the KL Event to demonstrate to me just how wonderful these oils are. She seemed very knowledgeable and was also very charming and soft sell. I believed her and I let her take two kinds of oils, which she applied straight onto my knee and then proceeded to rub them directly into my right leg, which had been hurting. Then she rubbed in a layer of another kind of oil, again directly. Next, she used another oil to rub directly onto the base of my scalp just above my neck. The pain in my leg eased off and I felt very happy. Mentally I started thinking of all the different ways I could try more oils, and use them within a wider context. I had at first been doubtful as I thought perhaps oils are too strong and had to be diluted before being applied directly onto the skin, or even consumed. But my friends’ assurances eased my doubts away. Alas, the very next morning was when I awoke with the TIA. I realize now that my body had been sending me so many signals, and while I did not altogether ignore these signs, I had not taken them as seriously as I should have. I started feeling afraid. I am diabetic and am fully aware that one of the dangers of diabetes is suffering a stroke attack. My own father had died from a stroke, and I had also seen old lamas suffering from this terrible affliction. Jennifer and Hanni were amazing – probably because they are young
www.fswmag.com
people who are very clued on about medical symptoms. They are also expert Googlers and within minutes they had come up with enough information to get a good idea of what had happened to me. I am lucky, I guess. My husband encouraged me to take the B Vitamins. My family doctor came and took my blood pressure, after which he assured me that mine was not normally considered a stroke, just a mild one that must be read as a warning sign. My girls Jenn and Hanni called Khenpo Delek Rinpoche and Lama Kunchok, who were both in town and who both drove to my home immediately and we did two important pujas and prayers. The spiritual response to illness is ALWAYS vital and can spell the difference between full recovery and a worsening of the symptoms. Next day, my very dear friend Siew Yong came over, and when she found out what had happened, she immediately advised I had to move quickly; that I must NOT ignore the signs. She instantly arranged for me to see the specialist doctor at her AYURVEDIC center. She was absolutely confident that this was the best way for me to get a long term remedy. She said if I did not heed the signals my body was sending me, if I did not respond to the warning signs, the next time I would not be so lucky. The next time it could be a real stroke…
Since I do not smoke, don’t have hypertension, am not stressed out and am almost a vegetarian (note the word almost, so not quite yet but trying...) the healing process would be easier. So here I am writing about my experience, in the hope that those of you who may be diabetic or getting on in age will find this experience of mine useful. Responding quickly and correctly is the key to full recovery! The AYURVEDIC massage treatment using special herbal oil and powder massage remedies is truly excellent. I can feel the hardness inside my limbs and body surfacing and softening; and I can feel my nerve endings coming alive once more and my flexibility returning. The full treatment can take anything from two weeks of daily massages and medications, and I have to say I am beginning to enjoy the feeling of release, which the hot oil massages are giving me. I had forgotten the joy of having mobility. It had been only a few days when my limbs had freezed up on me. Now I feel relieved that I can actually walk upright again and even though I need to walk slowly, still I can walk like normal! This is kinda important as there are few things I enjoy more than walking my dogs every morning. This experience that I am sharing is actually something quite common, as many people hitting the big SIX-O need to be aware of. We are not as flexible or as nimble as we used to be, and sitting at the computer as often as so many of us do, our bodies can freeze up on us. I consider myself very lucky and blessed. I am realizing now that my acute leg pains are not so much unlucky obstacles to my work. No indeed, they are a result of the blessings I am being showered with. Rather than getting struck down with something truly tragic, I feel lucky I am being given a chance to repair my body; that all the causes and conditions happened to have Khenpo pray for me, to have the diagnosis, the doctors and the treatment I need to recover. These surely are such great blessings!

THE POWER OF THE GREAT
AMAZON RIVER
A
mazon.com is just like the great Amazon River, winding its way across the jungles of South America, awesome in its unrelenting flow even as it curves its way across 6500km, depositing the largest water discharge - 209,000 cu meters every second - into the great Atlantic Ocean. Just think of the power this entails! Just imagine the supremacy of this kind of Water Dragon, this sort of massive global feng shui empowerment! JEFF BEZOS is the genius behind the Amazon model and the meteoric rise of this enormously successful company through the past 21 years 40
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
boils down to the innovative sales and commercial strategies he put in place. Amazon.com’s logo is in white with a hand-drawn yellow arrow under its name. It is likely the awesome hidden strength of the Amazon River must have weighed in on his choice of name and logo. Word has it he has a healthy respect for all things Chinese. He is fully aware of the power of feng shui and from thereon, he knows about the great significance of natural water flows bringing huge success, drawing on the natural landscapes of the jungles to generate the fast growth he has experienced. The mindset of Jeff Bezos who founded the company and remains
its President and CEO is worth investigating and getting to know! Let us try to understand Jeff Bezos. To examine the way he thinks, study his approach to work. Imbue his attitude towards building the company and follow his strategy and business model for Amazon. This is not an ordinary man. He hangs on to everything he believes. Jeff Bezos was a high-powered Vice President in an investment firm when he founded AMAZON in 1994 at a time when the future of the Internet was simply a pipedream for many people. Nevertheless, he left a financially secure position to set up Amazon. When TIME magazine www.fswmag.com
When Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.com in 1994, he named his website after this great and winding river. The company lost money in the early years but it has since gone on to become the most powerful DISTRIBUTOR of books, and today, of almost everything sold online! It now dominates the world’s book trade after successfully changing the structure of the book industry forever, causing the slow deaths of bookstore chains around the world, including previous giants BORDERS and BARNES & NOBLE in the USA.
interviewed him, he explained then, “I knew that if I didn’t try this I would regret it, and it would be inescapable”. Bezos first rule in life is to REGRET NOTHING. Setting up Amazon reflects his attitude of always making sure he keeps to the Regret Minimization Framework he considers to be his guiding principle. Bezos second rule is to PLAY THE LONG GAME. The early days of AMAZON were not profitable days. Bezos explains that he warned his investors that the company would be years away from turning a profit. Indeed, to quote what he said at a business interview he gave in 1997, “We are going to be unprofitable for a www.fswmag.com
long time. That is part of our strategy.” The company grew very quickly in the late 1990’s, developing innovative customer service strategies that burnt through all the cash being generated by its online sales. But Bezos was always adamant and he put it all on the line. It was not until 2003 that AMAZON earned its first full year profit. His vision accepted that building an Amazon size business meant having to forgo profits… to grow and grow and grow. Bezos knew he had to generate a sales turnover as huge as the great river his company was named after, and with that kind of power, the profits would come flowing in. Once at a Bank Cocktail he whispered to someone who asked… “Look at the length of the Amazon… see how far it has to travel before it reaches the ocean.” Bezos third rule is to START NARROW, THEN DIVERSIFY. Amazon has long arrived at the wondrous great ATLANTIC ocean. The company started narrowly – a
niche business dealing exclusively with book distribution. Today, Amazon has diversified up and down and sideways and more, much, much more. Today, Amazon sells just about everything from books to movies to clothing and groceries. Now with Amazon Prime and Amazon Studios, it has even entered into the business of media production. Note that Amazon started by selling one thing only: books! Selling books was Amazon’s proving ground to investors. The strategy was to start with ONE specific product and building a totally superior way to do it. The Amazon model of E-Commerce is today second to no one. With this infrastructure in place, it is diversifying into everything. Bezos’ vision was always to create the EVERYTHING STORE, and thus Amazon has become the global E-Commerce Giant of the world with warehouses and fulfilment centres around the globe and with just about everyone dying to be distributed by Amazon! SEPTEMBER 2015| F E N G SHUIWORLD
41
Amazon.com’s warehouse employs robots and runners to store, pack and ship out over a billion products each year! In 2014, Amazon’s shipping revenue amounted to 4.49 billion US dollars
Bezos’ vision was always to create the “EVERYTHING STORE” and thus Amazon has become the global E-tail Giant of the world with warehouses and fulfillment centres around the world with just about everyone wanting to be distributed by Amazon! And finally Bezos’ fourth rule is to understand that you must BE PREPARED TO FAIL if you want to be innovative. Amazon’s success today is the result of not just innovation on his part; it was a very big risk at that time in 1994 to put all his bets on the success of the Internet, and to believe that he could generate the billions of dollars in E-Commerce sales that he needed to justify all the investment he was putting in place to establish the fulfilment centres. 42
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
Amazon.com started by selling only books and today their selection of books is the largest in the world!
As anyone in the E-Commerce business will tell you, fulfilment is a logistics nightmare, and to perfect it takes guts, superb process engineering and tons of investment! It should surprise no one that even Bezos did not expect the company to succeed. Indeed, he had even told those who invested in Amazon that there was a 70% chance they would lose all their money! Bezos describes risk-taking as very liberating. As he puts it, “That’s
actually a very liberating expectation, expecting to fail”. Although, make no bones about this, he may have expected to fail, but his mindset was always success. Bezos never doubted himself, never regretted anything he did, never looked back. He is always looking ahead, and he minds when his company is described as unkind. When recently THE NEW YORK TIMES ran a big (and very unflattering) story about the Amazon corporate culture, Bezos quickly responded. www.fswmag.com

Yes, Jeff Bezos is data driven. He is a logistics guy, a metrics man, an algorithms empowered person. This is the heart and soul of Amazon.com
The Amazon River in South America is the largest river in terms of volume of water in the world. In feng shui, water represent wealth. An auspicious namesake indeed.
44
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
Yes, it is admitted, Jeff Bezos is data driven. He is a logistics guy, a metrics man, an algorithms empowered person this is the very heart and soul of Amazon. com. As if to explain the corporate culture of Amazon, he once shared the story of how he attempted to stop his grandmother smoking. It is a story he told the Princeton University graduating class of 2010, “I did not beg or appeal to her sentiment. I just did the math for her, calculating that every puff cost her a few minutes. “You’ve taken nine years off your life”, he told her. He was ten years old at that time. She did not say he was smart. She simply burst into tears. Jeff Bezos has not changed. Indeed, it is his unswerving, calculating brain that has become the engine that drives Amazon.com. Thus we see an Amazon today that is a totally impersonal company powered exclusively by metrics and algorithms to get the most out of every trade. No one runs Amazon; it is the algorithms as worked out by the computers that run the company. Ask anyone who sells through Amazon. “We don’t deal with anyone human at Amazon; how our products sell, how much help Amazon gives to our product, all depends on the algorithms, and if you don’t understand what this is, it will be hard for you to be successful selling through Amazon!” Bezos himself admits that it is harder to be kind than to be clever. Telling his grandmother that her smoking would take 9 years off her life was him being clever, not kind. This is the way he still is, but he is not an unkind man. His leaning towards metrics, working out what everything costs in terms of time, money and whatever else he wants to measure - when actually calculated out, makes him act in a seemingly harsh and unrelenting manner, and this can well trickle down to how his staff behave. Hence this becomes part of the Amazon corporate culture. Just like the great river which flows unrelentingly towards the ocean, it flows on totally unsentimental, and completely devoid of feeling. The great river does its job, generates the flow, delivers the products and captures the profits. It does the job for anyone with total efficiency. Amazon is sure to efficiently deliver anything and everything we order online.

5 MINUTE FENG SHUI
with Lim Han Jin
I
n the second part of this series, I would like to focus on the Metal Element. Just to recap, knowledge of the five elements form the core framework in the Chinese sciences of geomancy, medicine and basically how the world works from a Chinese perspective. Like the all other elements, the Metal element has both a Yin and Yang state. Yin Metal is represented generally by ornaments and objects that do not move or make any sound. A good example of this is a set of “Fuk Luk Sau” made in brass. Yang Metal can be represented by items such as clocks, where there are gears inside that can move and make some sound. Windchimes are perfect examples of Yang Metal as the chimes move in the wind, creating vibrations that generate sound. In the cycle of elements, the Metal element is produced by the element of Earth, which fuels it and makes it stronger. The Metal element is exhausted by the Water element, and is destroyed by the Fire element. It destroys the Wood element, and exhausts the Earth element. Therefore it can be used to cure afflictions based on other formulas. Placing Earth energies in Metal sectors will enhance them, Water element energies will weaken them and Fire element energy will be destructive. With this in mind, we can then start to apply these principles to the various formulas in Feng Shui.
Eight Aspirations
Under the Eight Aspirations formula, the West sector governs Descendant’s Luck. Its element is Small/Yin Metal and you can activate it by using Yin Metal energies. So if you would like your family to grow larger, you can activate this sector with lots of metal ornaments to bring more children for yourself if you are still young; while for the older generation, it can help secure a fertile marriage for your children, thus producing lots of grandchildren. The Northwest sector represents the element if Big/Yang Metal and represents the mentor luck of the occupants within the home. It can be activated with windchimes or clocks to actualize mentors in your life, whether for your career or if you are looking for a spiritual
www.fswmag.com
ACTIVATING THE METAL ELEMENT guru. Once activated properly, you will find that mentors that appear at different stages to impart the knowledge you require at that point in time.
Using Metal in Flying Star Formulas
In Flying Star Feng Shui, Metal is represented by the Auspicious Star 6, which can bring windfall luck and authority luck. As it is an auspicious star, you should place Metal and Earth elements in the sectors where the #6 star appears, to enhance the good luck it brings. The other Metal element star is the Robbery and Accident Star 7. This star, unlike the 6, brings bad luck that can cause you to lose money or even get injured causing you to “see some blood”, which can mean minor cuts or even accidents that may cause you lose a limb or two. To cure this, we use the exhausting cycle where Yin Water (still water) is placed in the affected sector. A good symbolic cure for this star are the Blue Rhino and Elephant. The Metal element can also be used to cure Earth stars such as the Five Yellow and the Illness Star 2,
both of which are of the Earth element. Traditionally, Metal element cures come in the form of windchimes and bells. Do note the use of Metal to cure Wood element afflictions will make the energies even more unstable, which could end up worsening the affliction.
Metal Elements in the modern age
Today, metal objects are very common as everyday objects, and we have to take special note that the Metal element can reduce the luck of Wood elements sectors. For example, if you have a clothes hanger in the yard and it is made mostly of metal, if placed in a Wood sector, especially the Southeast, it can harm wealth luck of the home. Similarly, cars are also made of metal, so when designing your house, placing the garage in the Northwest or West sectors will be beneficial. Avoid building the garage in the East or Southeast sectors of your home. Look around your space to see if there are metal element objects in your Wood sectors and check that you have activated the correct sectors with Metal energies. This will help ensure the environment you are living in is in balance.

LETTER FROM LYNNE AND PHIL, AUSTRALIA Dearest Lillian and the WOFS Team,
O
n behalf of myself and my family – Phil, Courtney and Krystall, we really want to thank you and your amazing team for the wonderful work you all do each year and all you have done for our family! I want to share with you the awesome GIFT that was given to us by King Gesar and Guru Rinpoche after we attended your Spiritual Feng Shui Event last year in 2014! Last year, my whole family and I flew from Australia to Singapore to attend your Spiritual Feng Shui event. During your lecture, you introduced us to King Gesar and the magical ritual of “Hooking Abundance” which you explained is especially powerful for the fulfilment of wishes, prosperity and success. You told us that the ritual text says that this prayer is recited 108 times, definite blessings will manifest for us. And because we were doing this ritual together with a thousand others during that day, the power of the ritual was multiplied! I was really so thrilled, as I had already made a mental checklist of all the wishes I wanted to hook and attract! I especially asked for Phil and I to be able to spend quality family time together with my two girls, as both of them study 600kms away (6 hours drive) from our home! It’s not like they can just pop home for dinner anytime! I really miss them dearly every day! At the event, we were so excited as you had arranged for Khenpo Delek Rinpoche, yourself and your M.A.F.I.A. friends to perform this ritual on stage with us using the daktar hooking wand. Hanni had told us in the morning to get these wands before they were sold out, and I’m so happy that all four of us managed to get one! Just before the afternoon puja started, I noticed that everyone in your group had a daktar on their prayer table except Mr Too- who did not have his own daktar. I signalled to Hanni that she could borrow mine – and she came over to bring my daktar to Mr Too! I felt so lucky as I knew it would empower the daktar even more if it was used by one of your MAFIA members during the ritual. As we were learning how to hook in the abundance, I felt incredibly fortunate that such a powerful ritual was being taught to us. The event was a huge success … and we felt energized and so positive after attending! When we arrived back to our home, which is situated outside of Perth in West Australia (six hours flight and another six hours drive to our house from the airport) we were so exhausted and jetlagged but so happy and glowing from our trip! As we took a rest at the dining table, I was just giving myself and my family a pep talk about unpacking and all that… when… A phone call came from the radio station, telling us that we have won their major prize of a four-week trip
Lynne and Phil Conder and their two daughters Krystall and Courtney at Lillian Too’s Spirtual Feng Shui event last year.
Khenpo Delek Rinpoche and Lillian taught the audience how to use the daktar to hook the abundant blessings of King Gesar!
to France, Monaco and Disneyland for the entire family! It was an all-expense-paid trip, complete with business class tickets, lavish meals, top-notch accommodation and plenty of VIP highlights and events rolled in! The lady on the phone asked me when my family and I could go, and I said “I can’t right now, I still haven’t unpacked from our Singapore trip!!!” Wow! We could not believe our good fortune – we knew without a doubt that it was King Gesar’s blessings that we received at your event! What a remarkable blessing – it was the answer to my wish – but much, much MORE! It would be a whole month of Phil and I spending super amazing quality time with my girls, all paid for! Finding the right time to go on this trip wasn’t easy as we have two businesses to run, and my girls are at university most days. As taught by Lillian and Khenpo Delek, Phil and I prayed to King Gesar every day for a month and hung his flags all around our business. Our business seemed to be getting very busy since King Gesar entered our lives… and so we prayed hard to find the time to do this trip.
How cool is that – it’s like King Gesar tailored this entire tour just for our family - fulfilling every dream each of us had! It was amazing! And the fun didn’t stop here… there’s more! The four of us, visiting Notre Dame Cathedral.
Dream come true for us visiting the Eiffel Tower all together as a family.
Here we are at Euro Disney with Mickey Mouse. We were very well looked after and felt like happy little children all over again.
PARIS – THE CITY OF ROMANCE! Almost exactly a year later, we finally found a window of time for all of us to go on this trip. It was truly the trip from heaven! We spent four weeks travelling in Paris and all around France and Monaco! On the first week there, we were hosted as VIP guests at Euro Disney – where they put us up in their AUD$10,000 family suite –while giving us guided tours and exclusive “no-waiting” access to all the rides and parades! We had such a glorious time – like being little children again! It was magical!
Then they took us to Paris for shopping and sightseeing! We visited the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe, Versailles and even cruised down the Seine River to visit designer shops like Chanel! It was truly Krystall’s (my eldest daughter) dream come true to be able to visit the original Chanel shop. We were given special access to view Coco Chanel’s private apartment and her famous mirrored staircase which all Chanel fans and models want to be photographed on! As a keen gardener myself, I particularly enjoyed Claude Monet’s House and Gardens and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild estate, which were on my bucket list from way back, and is now being fulfilled without my having to organise anything myself! At night, they took us to the Eiffel Tower and we stood there together as a family, marvelling at our great good fortune, taking in the breathless beauty of the lights and views of Paris. Courtney, our youngest daughter, had watched Moulin Rouge on video so many times and had always wanted to be here. And what do you know, they took us to watch Moulin Rouge live – which was such a BIG highlight for her! We then travelled for the next 14 days to the south and north of France. I loved Provence, Arles where Vincent Van Gogh the great artist created his master pieces. We also visited Nice and the French Riveriara – where we were told was a hot holiday destination for celebrities! We were completely blown away at the extravagant mansions and toys of the rich and famous!
Here is a breathtaking view of Monaco Harbour. The weather was just perfect throughout our stay there!
Cruising down the Seine River. Each of us are wearing Lillian’s Popularity scarf with the Seven Royal Emblems, which made our trip so smooth and lovely.
MEETING WITH ROYALS AT MONACO And then there was Monaco! They put us up at the fabulous Monte Carlo Hotel which is very famous for the F1 cars racing under the hotel. This is where Phil’s dream came true – of driving a brand-new red Ferrari around the city and along the Grand Prix circuit! How cool is that – it’s like King Gesar tailored this entire tour just for our family - fulfilling every dream each of us had! It was amazing! And the fun didn’t stop here… there’s more! We all enjoyed the visit to the Royal Palace of the Grimaldis and marvelled in amazement at how lucky our timing was! Princess Caroline’s son - Pierre Casiraghi was having a pre-wedding ceremony to his long-time girlfriend and model Beatrice Borromeo! Then 2 days later, while on our flight back from Nice to Paris – in business class we were seated near Princess Stephanie and her daughter Pauline Ducruet. Lillian once told us that meeting up with Royalty by chance is always an auspicious sign – and we felt so blessed that our Monaco trip brought us in close proximity with not one but two royals!
WALKING WITH LIONS AT MAURITIUS! Finally, our whirlwind vacation concluded with a stop-over at the island of Mauritius (on the way back from France to
Australia)! Even this little stop-over was arranged for us. We were taken to the “Walk with Lions” safari and here you can see from our photos that we really got up close and personal with these majestic furry creatures! It was a little scary to come up so near these lions, but something inside us knew we were protected by King Gesar, Tara and Guru Rinpoche and that there was nothing to fear! Lillian, these popularity scarves that you make are truly a God-sent. All of us wore your amazing amulet scarves throughout the trip and we were truly greeted and treated royally – like real VIPs! There were absolutely ZERO obstacles – we didn’t lose anything, there was not a single delay in our flights or tours. Everywhere we went we were met only by friendly faces and helpful people. In fact we were constantly told by the people hosting us – “this is your lucky day we have a surprise for you or something extra is happening today”! So auspicious! Even the flight attendants actually thanked us for wearing these scarves as they felt that just by having us in their plane, they felt safer! It was very surreal and yet all this happened to us! This trip was really filled with the most memorable and cherishing moments! Phil and I realized that it was a real blessing from the Buddhas - something that cannot be afforded or even arranged by us even if we tried. It was really something that that can only happen to your life if you are lucky enough to win or have hooked your wishes and dreams. Our family had the most amazing time together, and throughout the trip we felt the hand of King Gesar, Guru Rinpoche and Tara fulfilling our wishes and guiding us the whole time. Thank you Lillian and your amazing team for introducing King Gesar to us and for sharing your knowledge with the world. As soon as we got home from our trip we rested for 1 day just to pack ourselves and make our way to KL for this year’s event. We just had to share this trip with you and thank you! We Love YOU so much!
A Walking with Lions- Safari Tour was a great culmination of our trip. Here’s Krystall (who will be a vet one day) petting this lovely mama-lion
SUPERSTITIONS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN
Traditional beliefs around the world place great importance on rules for pregnant women to follow to ensure baby goes full term. Expecting mothers must put attention to observing these taboos, especially during the early months of pregnancy! AVOID PINEAPPLE According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, consuming pineapple clears the lining of the womb. So eating pineapple while pregnant is a big NO-NO as it can lead to miscarriage! Avoid at all costs.
TIE A RED THREAD In Russia, pregnant ladies and new mothers believe that babies can “catch” bad luck when the mother is out taking a stroll. To ward off bad luck, it is customary to tie a red thread onto the baby’s stroller. Pregnant ladies also tie a red thread on their clothes to ward off bad spirits! PRAISE OTHER BABIES If a pregnant woman criticizes someone else’s child, their own baby will look and act like the child or baby they criticize. During pregnancy, the best advice to follow is for the expecting mother to keep all her thoughts and negative opinions to herself. www.fswmag.com
AVOID USING GLUE The Chinese believe that touching anything with glue or adhesive can cause the baby to develop an unsightly birthmark on the face. This can also cause the birth to be very difficult. NEVER GO OUT OR GIVE BIRTH DURING SUN OR MOON ECLIPSE A solar or lunar eclipse is considered very bad luck. You must never look at an eclipse! Expectant mothers are advised not to go outside or schedule any births during an eclipse. Babies born during an eclipse are considered a bad omen. NO USING HAMMERS OR TOOLS Do not knock the wall or heavy furniture as doing so can result ugly birthmarks on the baby. If you strike an animal during pregnancy, the newborn child will look and behave like that animal.
DO NOT SIT BY THE DOORSTEP In Indonesia and rural parts of Malaysia, sitting by the doorstep or on the foot of the stairs while pregnant is believed to tempt wandering spirits to enter into the womb and cause labour difficulties! AVOID FUNERALS The Chinese believe that pregnant mothers and newborns should NOT go anywhere near funerals or cemeteries. These are places filled with spirits that can easily attach themselves to a developing foetus or a small infant! If you must go, the convention is to tie a red ribbon around the baby bump together with a strong amulet!
CANNOT USE SCISSORS Avoid placing sharp objects such as knives or scissors on or near the bed. In fact, the expecting mother should refrain from using scissors even to cut paper or cloth. Doing so can result in the baby being born with a cleft lip. Sometimes this can lead to the baby getting scarred.
NO GRANDMAS IN THE DELIVERY ROOM, PLEASE! The pregnant woman’s mother can be present at delivery of the first child, but should not be there for subsequent children.
WEDDINGS & LARGE PARTIES CAN BE TOO MUCH! The Chinese believe that weddings and large parties can cause their foetus to meet up with jealous ghosts that cause miscarriages or deformities. Avoid them towards the last trimester. SEPTEMBER 2015| F E N G SHUIWORLD

THE LAUGHING
BUDDHA
BRINGS ALL VARIETIES OF
HAPPINESS LUCK! By HANNI LIM
K
nown as Budai to the Chinese, the Laughing Buddha is revered as one of the most powerful Buddhas in the Chinese pantheon of Buddhas. This happy, smiling bot-bellied Buddha can’t help but lift your spirits and inspire a smile when you look at him! His presence in the home brings an enormous dose of happy energy that dispels all your troubles and woes! Over the years, we have heard many uplifting stories from our fans, telling us how their lives have transformed for the better just by inviting the Laughing Buddha into their lives. One lady we know was going through a bitter separation with her husband and then one day, she came across an oriental store that was selling a beautiful porcelain Laughing Buddha seated with his right hand raised as if to say “Stop.” “ He l o o k e d s o h a p p y a n d contented, and I was feeling so depressed that day. I felt that like he was calling out to me, telling me that he could stop my unhappiness and that he would lend me some of his happiness energy,” she said.
50
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
She brought home the Laughing Buddha that very day and placed him at the entrance of her home. That year, she and her husband made amends and the two are now still happilly married! Another woman who came for one of our courses told us how the Laughing Buddha helped her get married! She had been single for many years and had great difficulty finding a good man to marry! On her 30th birthday, her best friend gave her a little white Laughing Buddha with children, and told her it was a wish-fulfilling Buddha! She held the Laughing Buddha close to her heart and made a silent wish to find a wonderful man who would make her happy in every way. Within a month, she moved into a new apartment and met a lovely man who lived right next door to her! He swept her off her feet completely and the two are now happily wedded with a baby on the way! The Laughing Buddha is truly the best antidote to all kinds of unhappiness. He appears in many postures to symbolize his ability to alleviate all kinds of complications from your life! But no matter what he is carrying or wearing, he is always depicted with a huge potbelly, always laughing and always relaxed and contented.
His large belly is said to symbolize the happy and content life that comes from abundance and prosperity, and having enough to eat. His laughing expression reminds us that life does not need to be so serious all the time – and whatever suffering we have is just a temporary illusion. He reminds us that whenever we feel sad, all we need to do is laugh! The Laughing Buddha is usually seen carrying or sitting on a huge sack. The sack does not carry money; in fact, it carries all our problems and obstacles! This signifies the Laughing Buddha suppressing and removing all our difficulties, obstacles and sadness!
HE REPRESENTS THE FUTURE BUDDHA The reason why the Laughing Buddha generates such powerful happiness energy is because he’s not an ordinary ornamental figure. He is a bodhisattva and the manifestation of MATREIYA– the Future Buddha. According to Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha Matreiya is predicted to appear on Earth (like how Shakyamuni and the Buddhas before him came to the world) to save the world and re-establish the teachings of the dharma when it is degenerated to an almost non-existent state. Until then, Matreiya appears in many different forms – the most popular being the Bodhisattva Laughing Buddha.
www.fswmag.com
Making a connection with the Laughing Buddha creates a karmic link with Matreiya and ensures that when he returns in the future, our future life will come under his protection and guidance. This is another reason why everyone should invite at least one form of the Laughing Buddha into their homes and place him in a respectful place! Matreiya has taken the form of the Laughing Buddha with the sole purpose of helping us enjoy a happier life. Having a good life that is free from major obstacles is not only desirable, it is essential for the attainment of spiritual growth in the long-term! When we are financially secure, it becomes much
easier to be generous and practice a giving attitude. When we are happy and secure in our relationship with our spouse and our family members, we are in a much healthier mental state to practice compassion for others without anger and jealousy. When we are happy, our minds become stable and strong. This is the right mental state and happy attitude that allows our inner spirituality to rise to a new level! You can invite whichever Laughing Buddha that you feel an affinity, or be like us and invite them all! You can also wear the Laughing Buddha as a pendant to keep him close to your heart at all times. It’s very beneficial to learn how to chant his mantra. If possible, copy this mantra, print it as many times as you can on a yellow piece of paper; then roll it up the paper and place it inside the body of the Laughing Buddha. If your Laughing Buddha is solid, print his mantra on a very small piece of paper, roll it up and hang it over him. His mantra is as follows:
LAUGHING BUDDHA for WEALTH & OVERCOMING FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES You can always tell which Laughing Buddha this is, as he is always depicted holding a huge ingot. The Ingot represents wealth and prosperity – so this Laughing Buddha specializes in bringing greater financial stability and removing money problems. If you are struggling with your finances, need to reduce debt or find a new job to help with paying the bills, this Laughing Buddha is for you. There are several posture variations of this Laughing Buddha. Sometimes he’s shown seated and holding the ingot on the left hand, other times he’s lying down. Another version shows him standing up, holding the ingot above his head. We’ve been advised that the appearance of laughing Buddha holding it on his left hand (either seated or lying down on his side) is the most suitable for the home, and the version holding the ingot above his head is best placed in the office to stabilize financial matters in one’s business.
www.fswmag.com
OM MAITRI MAHA MAITRI MAITREYA SOHA All the different Laughing Buddhas each carry a different implement to signify his forte in solving different problems. In this issue we feature some of his most popular poses and they can come in white porcelain, brass or coloured resin. White porcelain (and painted porcelain) Laughing Buddhas are especially valuable to collect as the skill of making them is fast becoming a thing of the past. Skilled porcelain sculptors in China are becoming scarcer and more difficult to find - as most porcelain manufacturers have stopped making figurines and instead, channeling their resources towards making toilet sinks and bowls. So if you come across a beautiful Laughing Buddha made from porcelain, don’t miss out on the opportunity to invite one home! Not only will he bring you such a lot of good luck and blessings, he will become truly a collector’s item in the future!
LAUGHING BUDDHA for EXCELLENT DESCENDANTS LUCK This Laughing Buddha is always depicted with at least three children a r o u n d h i m ! He specializes in creating family happiness and can help resolve quite a number of family issues. If you are single and looking to get married, this is the Laughing Buddha for you. If you are having trouble conceiving, invite this image of Laughing Buddha and chant his mantra! Along with children, this Laughing Buddha is also shown holding a RuYi scepter which symbolizes control over children! This is Laughing Buddha to invite into the home if you have disobedient children and need help with controlling them. Parents who have problematic children; i.e. kids mixing with the wrong kind of friends, children who struggle with their studies, children being bullied in school by friends or teachers, … these are all the problems that can be resolved by this Laughing Buddha. Invite him into your home and place it in the West corner of your living room, or in your children’s room.

LAUGHING BUDDHA for AUTHORITY & CAREER ENHANCEMENT This is the CEO’s Laughing Buddha – as he is seen carrying a Ruyi and generally his other hand is either carrying an ingot, or depicted in a wish-granting mudra. The Ru Yi symbolizes high authority and mandate and the ingot represents prosperity. The wish-granting mudra – where the palm is held up as if to say “stop” – is where blessings of wishes flow! This Laughing This Laughing Buddha is the best one for removing obstacles and harm related to office politics and gossiping. Most importantly, the Laughing Buddha protects you against hidden enemies in the office! If you have aspirations for promotion and elevating your career prospects, then invite this Laughing Buddha into your home or your office. If you are struggling at work – your boss hates you, or you have no friends in the work place who support you – then invite this Laughing Buddha into your life. The best is to get the white porcelain ones or one that wears a red and gold robe.
LAUGHING BUDDHA for A HAPPY “OLD AGE” All of us will eventually reach retirement age … and wouldn’t it be nice to have a relaxed, happy old age that is free from money and health worries? This relaxed Laughing Buddha, languishing with his hands held behind his head is exactly the Laughing Buddha who looks after us when we grow old! Invite this Laughing Buddha into your home once you’re over the age of 40. It also makes a great gift to give someone for their 40th, 50th, 60th and 70th birthday.
LAUGHING BUDDHA WHO PROTECTS AGAINST DEMONS and ENEMIES If you work or live in a dangerously competitive environment where your enemies are always lurking around or hiding in the shadows, then you need this powerful Laughing Buddha. He is the meditative form of Laughing Buddha – with one hand holding a set of large mala beads and another hand holding a lasso or a rope loop. The lasso symbolises the ability for the Laughing Buddha to “catch” anyone – spirit or human – who means to cause harm to you and your family.
LAUGHING BUDDHA for WISDOM AND IMMORTALITY This Laughing Buddha is shown holding up a pair of pearls which signify two things. The first interpretation is that the Pearl signifies a special kind of “wisdom”. The outer meaning of this wisdom is intelligence and academic knowledge. This Laughing Buddha is thus associated with academic success and is excellent for children or young adults. The inner meaning of the pearl is associated with spiritual knowledge and mind transcendence. Those who are involved in esoteric sciences can benefit from this kind of wisdom pearl! The second interpretation associated with a pair of pearls – is health and healing. Legend tells us that these two large balls are actually medicine pills that were given to the Laughing Buddha by the Naga King. One pill is for healing diseases and extending ordinary long life. The other pill is for spiritual immortality - signifying the attainment of a high spiritual level that allows to enter a paradise heavenly land after we have passed away. This Laughing Buddha is thus excellent for both very young children and very old people!

hakri Thai restaurant at Suria KLCC celebrated its 16th anniversary by introducing 16 new dishes at a celebratory dinner in the presence of M.L Sirichalerm Savadiwat, who was the guest of honour. In Thailand, ‘M.L’ means Mom Luang, while the higher rank is ‘M.R’ or Mon Rajawongse, which may roughly be translated as ‘Tengku’. Chef McDang is famous throughout Thailand for his cooking, cookbooks and column in Thai language Daily News. Despite the natural inclination to think of McDonald’s, Chef McDang has nothing to do, God forbid, with fast food. Explains the affable and youthful 62 year old, “I used this name by combining the nicknames of my father Merk and my mother’s pet name Daeng, but non-Thais stumble over Merk Daeng, so I shortened it to McDang!” As a member of the current Chakri dynasty, Chef McDang commands the most coveted credentials, as not only is he a marvellous cook, he was accustomed to the finest dishes as he grew up in a real palace! Grins the chef extraordinaire, “I was raised in Sukhothai Palace by Chao Phraya River and

“This differs from normal Thai cuisine in three ways. The first is balance which means there are no extremes in flavours---never too sweet, sour, bland or spicy! Second, only the freshest and best ingredients are used as vegetables must be garden fresh and not bruised and meat must be newly slaughtered. Finally there must not be any bones anywhere! lived with my great aunt Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni who passed away in 1984. “As a child, I used to explore the kitchens and see how things were cooked, so I had a natural flair for cooking. Growing up in Sukothai Palace, I was accustomed to what is called Royal Thai Cuisine. “This differs from normal Thai cuisine in three ways. The first is balance, which means there are no extremes in flavours - never too sweet, sour, bland or spicy! Second, only the freshest and best ingredients are used, as vegetables must be garden fresh and not bruised, and meat must be newly slaughtered. Finally, there must not be any bones anywhere! The fish bones and meat bones must be removed before serving, so in theory, everything on the dish can be eaten! The pits must be removed and if possible, all fruits and vegetables must be carved so when presented, it is both pleasing to eye first and then palate!” Chef McDang sat and dined at the same table as Queen Rambhai from age 12 onwards when “I was expected to be able to behave!” He recalls, “We dined Russian style. This means Her Majesty sat in the middle of the table with the guests of honour at both sides or in front. No one sat at the head of the table like in England where the Queen or host and hostess would sit at each end of the table. “Queen Rambhai preferred red rice and all dishes were served only for her on silver plates and crystal with her emblems. Each of us had our own cutlery with our own emblem and

we used western style cutlery. Dinner was always a formal affair and usually lasted two and half hours!” He was lucky as being a child and the precious pet of Queen Rambhai he was not shackled by too much protocol. But he still had to grovel at her feet daily before he could kiss her cheek! At 18 he had to use formal royal language. “I loved having afternoon tea with Her Majesty in her boudoir, gardens or verandah. She was raised in Britain and used the most fabulous tea sets. I am so lucky to enjoy such a privileged childhood!” How did he begin his culinary career which was never planned? “Many years ago – but not too many – I was a young student in England, away from home for the first time. Desperate for a taste of home, I ventured into the kitchen for the first time to make my very first
meal: kai pullo, or Chinese-style fivespice-accented pork belly and boiled egg stew. It tasted good! Growing up in Sukothai Palace, I experienced firsthand the traditions and artistry that go with cooking top-flight Thai food. “I was also lucky to have as a mentor my father, M.R Thanadsri Svasti, who was – and remains – a pioneer in food education in Thailand. He is a brilliant man, able to parse very complicated concepts and ideas about food into language readily understood for the layman. My love of Thai food (and, hopefully, my ability to translate the intricacies of Thai food to a wider audience) come from him. Her Royal Majesty Queen Rambhai was Chef McDang’s aunty and mentor. She brought him into the palace and raised him.

I saw Julia Child on TV, and became so enchanted I put an apron on, started cooking and my life changed. I got a job as a lunch cook at the Back Porch Café in Delaware before taking over. “I began voraciously studying everything food-related I could get my hands on. It was as if someone had turned the lights on in a dark room. I never looked back. “Today, I consider myself a diplomat of sorts; only this time, the medium is food. Whether on television, through my lectures or my website, I have spent a lot of time in many different places showing people exactly why I think Thai food is so special. “People all over the world are interested in learning about Thai cuisine – its origins, history and ongoing evolution – and the fundamentals that make Thai food the marvel it is. When I travel abroad, lecturing on the principles of Thai cookery to nonThai audiences, I become a sort of Thai food “ambassador”. “Both pursuits are tremendously fulfilling and sharpen my perspective on Thai cuisine. What strikes me most about Thai cuisine lately is that few people - including Thais - have a concrete grasp of what it really is. “We are at a kind of crossroads for Thai food identity (and possibly Thai
www.fswmag.com
identity in general) spurring people to develop their own understanding of what Thai food is like. Unfortunately, that also leads to some pretty confused Thai food. “There is nothing more disheartening than entering a Thai restaurant abroad, only to be met by an embarrassed-looking Thai ownerchef who apologizes for his food before you have even taken a bite. “Our food is for foreigners,” they invariably say. “You should have told us you were coming earlier.” What is left unspoken is that a completely different cuisine is being served to people - a parallel “Thai food” with only a passing nod to the wonderful things we have at home. “Don’t get me wrong. I love that more and more people every day are tucking into Pad Thai (char kuay teow) or slurping up a bowl of thom yum goong (spicy prawn soup). Thai food is an integral way to share Thai culture with the world. “I want people know the real McCoy, the original Thai food and how the cuisine has evolved over the past decades touched by Western influences”.
Of course, one assumes Chef McDang owns a 3 Michelin star restaurant in Thailand or a chain of popular eateries. Ironically, he has none! “I owned 3 restaurants, all in USA and none served Thai food!” he laughs. “Back then, Thai cuisine was maybe too exotic for Americans! I owned one in Key West, Florida, Charms restaurant which served French Pacific Rim cuisine and Back Porch Café in Delaware, which served seasonal food. I sold all before returning to Thailand in 1993. “I decided never to open another restaurant simply because I had to work during big festivals, holidays and important occasions! I don’t want to toil in the kitchen when my friends are enjoying and partying outside!” chuckles the bon vivant. He has no favourite dishes either! “It depends on my mood, personal cravings, seasonal produce and the weather!” In 2009, he decided to write his first cookbook…in English! “Not many Thai read English books. I wanted to write in Thai originally. Then I read a survey saying the
average Thai read 8 sentences in a book in a year! So I decided to write ‘Principles of Thai Cookery’ in English! Mind you, I continued writing 6 more cookbooks in Thai!” Says Caleen Chua, director of Chakri Group, “Three of Chakri’s 16 new dishes are from ‘Principles of Thai Cookery’, while the rest are inspired and approved by Chef McDang.” Enjoy.

HAVE A GOOD DAY
EVERYDAY 1. Hum a happy tune as you rise and shine
Put your frame of mind into a good mood as you wake up. This sets the tone of your day in the most effective way. It activates your face muscles into a wide smile and brings happy thoughts into your mind. You can be spontaneous in the tune you choose or you can sing a song that means a lot to you. Avoid choosing sad goodbye-type songs and instead go for joyous tunes, rousing marches or even patriotic melodies. For years after I returned from studying at the Harvard Business School where I spent two of my happiest years, I would sing AMERICA the beautiful, simply because I just so loved this song; not because I loved America but because I loved the sentiments the song invoked in me, the way the song made me think of my own homeland and caused me to love my own country so much. Funny how 58

the secret rituals of happy living BY LILLIAN TOO melodies touch the inner soul. So let a powerful melody bring you a beautiful start to your day.
2. Start the day with the triple infinity hand sign
And as you walk through your front door to go out into the big world out there, walking confidently to your car to go to work, use your right hand to create the triple infinity sign. Extend your right hand into the air on the right and then bring it to create the figure of 8 which is also the infinity sign. Repeat this three times. Oh my, how powerful a ritual this is! Do this daily until it becomes a habit, and you will discover that the energy that surrounds you will instantly improve. The world and everyone you meet will dance to the same tune as you, and will operate at the same frequency as you. This is one of the most powerful secret rituals of living that I have made my own for a very long time, and to everyone I have shared this www.fswmag.com
with, this triple infinity hand ritual has brought resolution to so much stress. Try it!
3. Say hello to your car
Greet your car with some small praise – gee, you smell good this morning, brush your hands over the dashboard and give it a pat as if to acknowledge just how much you appreciate the car serving you, taking you safely to work and back each day. Treat the spirit of the car with genuine warmth and caring, and each time you clean and wash it, generate these same thoughts in your mind. And if you are one of those who sings to the morning radio, imagine the car singing happily along with you. Not many people realize how much their cars will love them back, if only you will consciously love your car.
4. Smile to the first person you see
This is such an easy thing to do. Putting a smile on your face is a powerful way of relaxing your facial muscles, and automatically making your whole body lose whatever tension that may be knotting up your insides. As you go through the motions of walking into your office, smile at every stranger and make the smile even wider when you encounter a familiar face. The warmth of a smiling face spreads amazing goodwill – just try it as soon as you can. Precede every request with a smile, and you will see just how nice people will be to you. Nothing really makes for a greater happiness ritual than actually smiling at the world. It brings enormously good feng shui!
5. Eat a light lunch, but tuck in if you skipped breakfast
It really is advisable to keep your lunch light. There have been so many research studies that advise against taking too heavy a lunch – it makes you drowsy and causes you to feel lethargic. Instead, keep your lunch intake light unless for some reason you happened to have skipped breakfast that day. Otherwise, avoid getting bloated in the middle of the day. Keep your thoughts happy and lighthearted, and try to avoid working lunches. This time of the day is not conducive to getting stressed out working, strategizing or making the mind get over-activated.
6. Find time for a 5 minute walking meditation in the afternoon
It is such a great habit taking a five minute walking meditation as you make your way back to office after lunch, or if you do not work, to find a quiet corner to quiet the mind in a five-minute meditation. Do not sit, but instead walk slowly. Even in a confined space, it is so good to stay upright and mobile. Take very deep breaths, as this is simply so good to strengthen the body muscles and to bring new oxygen into www.fswmag.com
your stomach. Inhale in as deeply as you can through the nose and exhale as slowly as you can through the mouth. As you breathe in, stretch your torso slightly, and as you breathe out, come back to normal. This daily breathing meditation is a reminder for your mind and body to stay balanced and relaxed. It really is a great habit this taking three deep breaths each day and letting the mind wander – it is the best form of spontaneous meditation.
7. Say three nice things through the day
Make it a habit to think up nice things to say to people you interact and work with through the day. Few things are as empowering as thinking positive thoughts about the people around you and when you actually give voice to these thoughts, it increasingly enhances the power of your daily speech. This is a happiness ritual the most successful people in the world engage in; praising others by saying something nice about them that you notice at any moment in time is such a powerful spontaneous gesture I wonder why not more people do it. This just creates such an enormous difference in the quality of the energy around two people like bringing in sunshine rays onto a dark gloomy day. So just imagine how much you can cheer up someone thinking unhappy thoughts?
8. Share a happy anecdote...
An even more powerful thing to do is to share a joke, a happy anecdote or a joyous event. I love watching comedy, all kinds, and even the silly slapstick kind gets me. I want any excuse to laugh out loud, as I know just how much oxygen I take in each time I have a good laugh. I also love listening to someone tell me about something funny, weird, strange, even gossipy that happened to them. Sharing a story or an event that makes you happy usually makes others happy too. It is in the sharing that makes life so meaningful and joyous. Get into the habit of making happy conversation this way, at least once each day, and let this interaction with someone make your day for you and for that other person too!
9. Write down your thoughts once a day
This is one of the best ways to become self-empowered. It is far, far more effective than taking a selfie, simply because when you write down your thoughts, you are outputting the way you think, how you see the world, your reactions to everything around you. Writing down your impressions and recording words you heard that touched you in some way will make sure you never forget them, and by the end of a month, a year or more, you would have created a written record of the world as YOU see it. This way you learn so much about yourself, things that are sure to expand your awareness of how you react to people and how they respond to you. These days, you can even add COLOUR into your life, as we see now the incredible rise in popularity of colouring books. It is simply so therapeutic to write and to colour. Start making these activities a part of your daily ritual. SEPTEMBER 2015| F E N G SHUIWORLD

he heat is on at Trafalgar Square in London one sunny Sunday in August and I am not talking about the unusually hot weather that day. Korea has come to town to rock up London and is firing on all cylinders to showcase the dynamic culture of East Asia’s most innovative developed country. It also boasts of the world’s fastest internet connection speed. Today Korea excels in almost everything they set out to do and this festival is to create awareness among the British of this awesome country and to show them that there are more to Korea than kimchi, Taekwondo, Samsung, Hyundai-Kia and LG. Let the show begins! Ever y programme at the festival is branded with the prefix

The Korean Festival may have opened the eyes of the British to a country that has a legion of both natural and man-made attractions abound with stunning scenery, ancient temples, a shopper’s paradise and beyond. K including K-music and dances both traditional and contemporary; K-cuisine, K-fashion; K-Contents and all things Korean. It is a country steeped in tradition but at the same time embraces and innovates world trends and technology with fearsome efficiency and dynamism rushing into the 21st century at break-neck speed. Its film and modern music industry branded as K-pop have gained world recognition and has massive following globally. In fact, I have known many friends and family members who are hopelessly addicted to Korean dramas on television that make mega stars out of the cast. On a huge stage under the shadow of Nelson’s column, nymph-like female dancers glide round the stage in vibrant pink and white hanboks, the traditional South Korean costumes, doing a fan dance. It is a graceful dance that needs precise synchronised movement to form spectacular moving patterns with the fans. The dancers executed the choreography perfectly. The huge audience send up a rapturous applause. Not to be outdone, the male dancers all clad in white come on stage to perform a fast-paced dance and show amazing skills of twirling white strips of ribbon attached to their headgears by rapid head movements without once tripping on the long trailing ribbons. Once again the crowd roared with approval. Classical musical instruments accompany the dance routines in rousing rhythmic beat. All the folk dances that follow are as riveting and amazing with their gorgeous costumes and lively dance steps that require great skill and co-ordination. Korean cultural dances are famous for their dynamic choreography and fabulous costumes and they deliver on very count at this festival.

To s h owc a s e t h e c o u n t r y’s contrasting culture of traditional performing art and its pulsating pop industry, Korea’s world champion b-boy group, Jinjo Crew, burst on to the stage much to the delight of the younger members of the audience who are obviously big fans of the group. They take break dancing to a new level throwing some breathtaking moves with awesome leg works and gravity-defying head and hand stands. I am breathless just watching the high-octane dance moves of these young street dancers. The highlight is the b-boy battle of Jinjo Crew versus UK’s b-boy group, the Mavericks. There are no holds barred in the dance off as each group tries to outdo the other with mock hostility and spectacular street dance movements. Uproarious cheer from the crowd as they cajoled the rivalling dancers and bray for more action amidst the eardrum-bursting high tempo ultra yang music enough to wake up dead!
Lord Nelson on his colossal column probably looks down with disapproval at the racket. A famous girl band called f(x) also strut their stuff with their electro-pop melodies and daring costumes. K-pop represents the hip youths of Korea who are marching into the 21st century with attitude, zest and a badass taste for music that put them on the world stage of the pop industry. Following the theme of marrying classic with contemporary designs, the Hanbok Fashion Show paraded a stunning collection of haute couture of a modern take of the hanboks in sumptuous colours. The ladies’ couture features the jeogori or longsleeved blouse worn with uneven length skirts, shorter than a traditional hanbok at the front with a long flowing back skirt creating an elegant and sophisticated look yet still capturing the look of the hanbok. I want one! The male models wear the traditional robes like an overcoat worn over the paji or baggy pants in vibrant colours funking up a simple design into fashionable attire with a modern twist. This fabulous fusion of haute couture trend is just the tip of the iceberg in the Korean fashion scene. They are famous for their luxurious silk and brocade fabric, intricate embroidery and costume jewellery and they are

not afraid to rock them up with contemporary touches. It would not be worth its salt if Korea did not showcase its technology intelligence and inventions, which surpass many countries in this field. I swear by their wonderful products such as my Samsung phone and LG electronic and electrical goods in the home. The K-Contents stalls exhibit various animation screening, gaming, technological gadgets and electronic goods attracting large crowds who subscribe to these modern phenomena. The festival will not be complete without promoting Korean cuisine. Various stalls are selling typical Korean fares while the show kitchen cooks up a storm with its cookery demonstrations by selected chefs from Korea and UK. Judy Joo, a KoreanAmerican from New York has made a name for herself in London in her cookery programmes in the Good Food Channel called “Korean Food Made Simple”. She is the trump card at the festival championing the healthy aspect of Korean cuisines and promoting kimchi, Korea’s

She has opened a restaurant called Jinjuu in central London featuring signature dishes from her programmes. Korean cuisine is not quite in the same league as Japanese or Thai food yet but it is slowly climbing up the culinary chart in London. Judy Joo has become an unofficial food ambassador of Korean food in UK and after her programme came on air, Korean supermarket in London was cleared out of gochujang Korean chilli paste and doenjang soya bean paste after she used these two ingredients in most of her recipes. Her viewers, including myself, were eager to try her seemingly easy recipes. I had some success in following the recipes and they were delicious.
Korea is not a natural choice for British holidaymakers as it has no historical link with the country but it is slowly gaining popularity as a destination from UK. The Korean Festival may have opened the eyes of the British to a country that has a legion of both natural and man-made attractions abound with stunning scenery, ancient temples, a shopper’s paradise and beyond. ue to its British colonial past and as a member of the Commonwealth, Malaysia maintains a very strong link with Britain. Thousands of Malaysians including myself have adopted this country as our home while still maintaining our roots in our homeland. Many of us come to the UK for education and better opportunity or just to broaden our horizons. One of the newest Malaysian diaspora in England is Diana Michelle Culey, who hails from Sabah and has recently made Liverpool her new home. She has British DNA in her bloodline from her English grandfather who is from Leeds. He was with the British Army in Malaya during the war and married a local Sabahan girl, Diana’s grandmother. He still lives in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah today. In her short spell in the city famed for the famous four – the Beatles and the recently deceased Cilla Black - Diana has made quite a name for herself. She has been featured in the media with the Lord Mayor of Liverpool and in the New Straits Times in Malaysia for her outstanding designs.
D

Diana trained as a graphic designer, and after five years in the field in Sabah, she decided to seek greener pastures abroad last year. She says, “I moved to England in March 2014. It was something I had thought a bit about as my granddad is originally from Leeds and my father was born in Leeds, so it was always an option for me to come to England. After working as a graphic designer in Sabah for 5 years, I felt the time was right for a change, and to try and further my career in a new environment where I could learn new skills. So that is how I came to end up living in Liverpool, though I was aware of Liverpool beforehand due to the popularity of the football team and the rich history of the city.” After some initial challenges getting used to a new way of life and culture in England, she soon got into her stride and secured a design job in a local company. While working on a project, she was recruited to do some design and a branding job for a company in Liverpool. She says, “ It has been a busy 2015 really. One of the members of the team had an idea to try and create some

commemorative items to celebrate the Cunard three Queens celebration in May-July 2015 and asked if I would come on board as a designer. I ended up designing various commemorative items and building and designing the website.”
Diana designed limited edition Cunard china Plates featuring Cunard’s original ship Britannia on her transatlantic maiden voyage to Halifax.
DESIGNING FOR THE PRESTIGIOUS CUNARD
Diana’s designs were chosen for a limited edition of 350 sets in bone China including a plate featuring Cunard’s original ship Britannia on her transatlantic maiden voyage to Halifax, Boston and New York on 4 July 1840 from the Mersey. The second plate is of the Queen Mary 2, which re-enacted the maiden voyage to celebrate the company’s 175th anniversary. The plates are signed and initialled by Diana bearing her “DMC” initials as hallmarks of being genuine articles. How cool is that, a Malaysian has engraved her name on such esteemed commemorative gifts on the Cunard! Cunard is the most renowned and established cruise company in the world, and owns three famous liners all named after British queens – Queen Victoria, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth II. The company celebrates their 175th anniversary this year with a momentous occasion when all the three “Queens” sailed down the Mersey into Liverpool on 25 May 2015. Liverpool was the former home of the Cunard Line. They are well known for their ultra-luxurious transatlantic voyages. “Due to the nature of the work on the Cunard celebration, and my colleagues’ connections, we managed to get the local Mayors of Liverpool involved, as well as the Mayors of New York, Halifax and Boston purely through gifting a copy of the commemorative plates to them. It snowballed from there really; Cunard were very impressed by the plates and the Captain of the Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 has also had plates presented to him as a gift from the Mayor of Wirral (part of Liverpool).

work, redesigning official charities logo for the former Lord Mayor of Liverpool,” Diana elucidates and she continues, “After learning about the history of the Cunard Line and its unique relationship with Liverpool as a port, I was really keen to create something that captured the illustrious history of the Cunard Line. After seeing the ships close up in real life, it was hard not to take inspiration from how spectacular they were.” Asked if she is surprised with the recent recognition of her work and what makes her stand out, she answers modestly, “I’m not so sure I stand out just yet in my profession, as I am still at an early stage in my career, but I guess as a designer, I love to work on a range of styles, right through from complex programs on mac and pc, to hand drawing and oil painting, whatever is required. When a project captures my imagination, I am extremely driven to create something that I am 100% happy with.” Diana is settling down nicely in her new home in Liverpool and she is amused when I ask her if she could understand the broad Scouse accent (nickname for people from Liverpool) which even the English, especially those from southern England, find hard to understand sometimes. She chuckles, “Haha, yeah my Scouse accent is coming along nicely now. On a recent trip home, my family were all laughing at my Scouse impressions.
After a few difficult initial months, I am now completely at home in Liverpool and can understand everyone here perfectly.
HILLARY CLINTON NEXT
“Who knows what will happen in the long term, but I am certainly very happy here, and hope one day to be very successful here. There are a few things I have in the pipeline, but the main project I am currently working on is in tandem with Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign for 2016.” From a humble graphic designer in Sabah to designing for Mrs Clinton is a giant leap of a step-up, and will be the icing on her portfolio. Way to go Miss Culey! Diana is also a talented artist and has started her own business as a side-line, taking commission on artwork. She also specialises in painting pet portraits, which has a growing demand in the UK. Like most of us living abroad, we still miss our native land, and Diana reminisces with nostalgia, “I miss my friends and family a great deal, but I know they are always available via skype, whatsapp or on the end of the phone, but it was lovely to see them again on my recent visit back to Sabah. The other main thing is the food! As much as I enjoy the vast choice of foods and restaurants in Liverpool, I still miss my Sabah traditional food, Sabah mango and my Mum’s home cooking.”

“Having been educated in a Chinese school, and having close friends and family with Chinese heritage, feng shui is always something I am aware. I take particular notice to numbers, colour, and money feng shui.”
When she’s not designing for clients, Diana loves making portraits of animals.
Diana was born in the year of the Horse, with Fire in her earthly branch and Metal in her heavenly stem. With Kua 8, Liverpool in the northwest of England lies in an auspicious direction for her. People born in the year of the Horse are generally energetic, enthusiastic and courageous and very single-minded in achieving their goals with tenacity and discipline, fired by a
Diana incorporates feng shui in her life. Says Diana, “Having been educated in a Chinese school, and having close friends and family with Chinese heritage, feng shui is always something I am aware. I take particular notice to numbers, colour, and money feng shui.” Based on her chart, her lucky colours are red (Fire) and white (Metal) and her lucky numbers are 9, 6, and 7. For money luck, it would be beneficial to energise her Southwest direction of wealth by placing herself or positioning her workstation to face that direction when working. It takes courage for a young girl like Diana to uproot herself from her comfort zone in Sabah and leave the bosom of her family unit to seek a new life in a foreign land. Dato Dr Farah Kahn at cake cutting ceremony with Shaan, Karim and Dimitri
DATO DR FARAH KHAN
CELEBRATES 5TH LUNAR CYCLE By DATO KEE HUA CHEE
Most women balk at admitting their age but the indefatigable Dato Dr Farah Khan shouted it loud and proud at her 60th birthday party last July at Grand Hyatt KL. Dato Dr Farah Khan with darling friends. Arrival of Dimitri and Dato Dr Farah Khan!
A
round 250 dearest and nearest family and friends swanned into Grand Hyatt ballroom to toast the ever glamslam, slim and youthful Dato Dr Farah Khan. For the terminally uninformed, Dato Dr Farah Khan is the founder and president of Melium Group, Malaysia’s leading purveyor of luxury, upscale designer labels. Today, Melium retails over a hundred coveted designer labels, including her own brand simply and effectively called Farah Khan Collection and her diffusion line FK. Sold in 44 cities across the globe, Farah Khan is Malaysia’s first and only international upmarket label. The birthday girl looked practically half her age under subdued lighting, and her infectious laugh echoed merrily as she welcomed guests and ensured everyone had a good time. Graced by Her Royal Highness Sultanah Kalsom the Sultanah of Pahang and His Highness Tengku Arif Temenggong Pahang Tengku Fahd Sultan Ahmad Shah, the evening started with speeches by Dato Farah Khan’s long term companion Dimitri Pantazaras, Dato Thong Kok Khee, executive director of Insas and Dato Steve Day, founder operator of MIGF (Malaysia International
Farah Quinn of Jakarta
Gourmet Festival) and Vision KL magazine. Dimitri described Dato Dr Farah Khan simply as “as good as it gets” and even showed a video clip from the movie of the same name starring Jack Nicholson who uttered the immortal words, “You make me want to be a better man.” Observed Dato Thong Kok Khee of public-listed Insas, “Farah is very brave to ask me to speak on such a big occasion as I have never given a speech before other than once at my daughter’s wedding. And I certainly ain’t a media baron and poster boy like Steve Day. And I certainly don’t have Steve’s reckless spontaneity, his efficacy, his many brilliant epiphany moments or his ability to do the Gangnam dance when all else fails. “Today, I have been asked to talk about life and friendship. That is a challenging and serious subject, but here goes. “On life at 60, one of Farah’s friends recently wrote, “At 60, a person has gone through 5 cycles of the lunar calendar and is reborn as a new person”. I don’t completely understand all this wisdom, but it sounds pretty profound to me! “At 60, we have experienced a lot. I learned the rules, changed some rules, reveled in the strength of my
youth, found my love, raised a family, laughed with my children, cried for them, found some success, faced my failures, did some smart things and many stupid things, had some regrets, lost my breath, found a new wind, discovered a newfound confidence, made new friends, discovered my true friends, discovered some wisdom in my older age and on balance, realised it’s been worth it all. That is my take on life at 60 in one breath. “According to Dato Farah Khan, “True friendship is about a relationship of understanding values over time,” but to me, character is defining. America’s top universities sometimes ask applicants to write essays on what constitutes their defining moment. Good character produces virtue, lack of good character tends to compromise virtue.” Dato Thong has spent 18 years in the boardroom of Melium with Dato Farah and both have enjoyed many ‘defining moments’. He said, “Not only in terms of work, but seeing her define her own humanity. She cares and has natural warmth and love for people, especially her family, staff and friends. I don’t know anybody who has so many good friends all over the world! These moments engender respect, and respect engenders deeper friendship.”

“On friendship and virtues, there is a very beautiful phrase in the Chinese language called “yan ching”, which literally means ‘human love’. ‘Yan ching’ means granting favour or helping a friend from the heart, not from the head, with no ulterior motive or expectation of payback. “Another beautiful phrase is “kwai yan”, literally meaning ‘precious person’. These are people who have carried us through some of our life’s twisted corners in our hour of need, or have been with us through such major episodes that we just can’t imagine having lived a life without them.” The irrepressible Dato Steve Day revealed, “At Farah’s birthday parties over the years, we’ve often played a game making words that describe Farah Khan using her initials F K. “The letter F is obvious ….. Fashion, Fabulous, Flamboyance, Fantastic and Fun. But the F words I think of most when I think of Farah are Family, Friends and Fearless. “Family and friends are paramount in Farah’s life. And as for Fearless – this describes Farah when it comes to dreaming up new ideas, overcoming challenges and seeing them through to the end. “So that’s F taken care of. When it comes to the letter K, let’s face it, we all get a bit stuck. Some of the ladies present - and I won’t mention who they are - normally suggest words that we gentlemen would never come up with like ……Kinky…. Kissing …..Knickers! “Of course, we guys who are

o the Chinese, the humble “ N a n g n u a” ( p u m p k i n ) symbolizes gold emerging from the earth! Consuming pumpkin is also believed to generate strong descendants’ luck, causing one’s children to have an illustrious future! The lotus seeds within the dish signify purity and fertility. Water chestnuts not only add a lovely crunchy texture to the dish, it also symbolizes family unity. Gourmet Goddess Juanita says, “This is one of my favourite dishes! It’s so delicious, and fancy enough to impress even your most gourmet vegan guests! If you’re making a meal for a dinner party, cook this dish first, as you’ll need to place the pumpkin inside the oven for 40 minutes and then another 20 minutes after placing the filling inside. If you are pressed for time, you can skip the baking; just cut up the pumpkin into chunks (without the skin) and cook together with the ingredients. While it won’t look as ornamental, it’ll taste just as good! Remember to boil your lotus seeds ahead of time. Save the bell peppers for last part – they’ll cook nicely inside the hot steaming pumpkin!”

METHOD: 1. Bake the pumpkin: Heat oven to 200ºC. Using a brush, coat the whole pumpkin with a light layer of oil. 2. Wrap your pumpkin in aluminum foil, place inside the top rack of your hot oven. Set your timer for 40 minutes. 3. Prepare the onion paste: soak dry chilies in boiled water until soft (10 minutes). Place the dry chillies, shallots, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, garlic and galangal into a food processor and pulse until a coarse paste. 4. Cook the filling: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a non-stick wok. Sauté onion paste over medium heat until fragrant and slightly brown.

5. Pour in the coconut milk and let it simmer for about 3 minutes. 6. Add in the mushrooms, lotus seeds and water chestnuts. (If you are not baking your pumpkin, this is the part where you add the pumpkin chunks). 7. Add in all the seasonings – coriander, cumin, pepper and salt. Stir and let everything cook for about 3 minutes. Switch off the heat and set aside. 8. Fill the pumpkin: Remove baked pumpkin from oven when the timer goes off. Using a sharp knife (and while wearing oven mittens), gently slice off round the top of the pumpkin at an angle: save this as the “lid”.

9. Scrape off the seeds from the lid with the knife. 10. Use a soup ladle to scoop out the pumpkin seeds. Be gentle and careful not scoop out pumpkin flesh! 11. Now fill the pumpkin - alternating between the cooked filling and raw bell peppers. The steam inside the pumpkin will help cook the bell peppers and fuse the flavours together. 12. Reposition the pumpkin’s lid and wrap with foil. 13. Place it back into the oven for another 20 minutes. When done, switch off the oven and leave the pumpkin inside. Serve hot from the oven when your guests are seated!

Long Life and Continuous Prosperity Growth Peanuts (fa-sang) symbolize long life as well as continuous growth and expansion! And what’s more, this zesty dipping sauce provides at least 35g of nut protein and goes extremely well with every kind of raw vegetable that takes your fancy. Gourmet Goddess Juanita says, “This is my all-time most popular dish. Every time I make it for my friends, I’m sure to get requests for the recipe! It comes from Indonesia (my home town) and literally means ‘mix mix’. The secret to getting that extra zing in the peanut sauce is kaffir lime leaves – so don’t skip this ingredient! I just love how flexible this salad dip is! You can serve it western style with celery, cucumber, zucchini, and carrot; or go traditional Indonesian with blanched cabbage, long beans, tofu and bean sprouts. The best part is you can make it ahead of time and keep in the fridge until your guests arrive! It’s also a great pot-luck dish to bring to your friend’s place, as it doesn’t change texture or lose flavour after cooking, and it doesn’t require reheating.”
INGREDIENTS For a Traditional Indonesian Gado Gado Salad: 4 pieces of fried Tofu – cut into 2 triangles 1 cup of cooked bean sprouts – trimmed and blanched 1 cup of cooked long beans – trimmed, cut into 2 cm, and blanched 1 cup of cooked cabbage – cubed (3 cm) and blanched 1 cup of cooked kang kung – washed and blanched 1 cup of cooked bayam leaves – washed and blanched A bag of Vegetarian crackers (bought from a Chinese vegetarian restaurant) OR For a Western Style Salad with Dipping Sauce: 2 carrots - peeled and julienned 2 cucumbers - peeled and julienned 1 large zucchini –sliced or julienned (any other raw vegetable you like) PEANUT SAUCE: 130g of peanuts – roasted and husks removed. 3 kaffir lime leaves 100g of palm sugar (Gula Melaka) – chopped up into small shavings

40g of tamarind paste 2 ¼ cups of freshly squeezed coconut milk 2 cloves of garlic 2 big red chilies 2 small chili padi (skip if you prefer less spicy) 1 tbsp ABC sauce ½ tsp of salt METHOD 1. Make the Chilli paste: Grind chillies and garlic in a food processor or bash it in a mortar and pestle until a fine paste is achieved. 2. Prepare the Tamarind Juice: Mix 4 tbsp of water with the tamarind. Use your hands to remove the pulp from the seeds. Mesh the mixture through a metal strainer to get the juice out. 3. Start Cooking: Heat your wok with 1 tbsp of oil. Sauté the chili paste and kaffir lime leaves over medium heat until fragrant. 4. Add in the tamarind, palm sugar, coconut milk and salt. Let it simmer and cook for about 4 minutes. 5. Place roasted peanuts into a food processor. 6. Pour the cooked mixture into the food processor and pulse it a few times. Be careful not to over-pulse the mix, as you want the peanuts to remain slightly chunky. 7. Return the pulsed mixture into the wok and turn on the heat. 8. Stir in the ABC sauce and let it simmer for about 3 minutes. The sauce is now ready. PLATING THE GADO GADO SALAD 1. Layer the vegetables in this order: start with cabbage, followed by long beans, bean sprouts, bayam, kang kung and finally tofu. 2. Arrange vegetable crackers around the salad on the side. 3. Top with a generous helping of peanut sauce on top. Enjoy!

Prosperity and Gold has arrived! Pineapple (ong-lai) has always been associated with abundance and good luck ripening! It’s for this reason that pineapples are always displayed prominently during the Chinese New Year. As for cashews, their shape resemble the ancient ingot and is thus associated with money! Gourmet Goddess Juanita says “This is a great dish to serve during an auspicious occasion like a birthday or a birth celebration! The turmeric gives the rice a lovely yellow color that makes it look like you’re eating gold! The secret to this dish is to be generous with the shallots and make sure you sauté them really well in sufficient oil! You’ll also get the best results from using overnight white rice from the fridge as it’s much drier than freshly cooked rice – making it fluffier and more conducive to soaking up the flavors. Fluff up the rice with a fork or a pair of chopsticks to ensure there are no rice lumps. Eggs can be skipped for a more vegan-friendly dish.” METHOD 1. In a non-stick wok, saute shallots, turmeric and garlic in oil until fragrant and shallots have caramelized slightly. 2. Add pineapple and saute for a further one minute. 3. Add the fluffed up rice and stir well until all the rice is coated with an even yellow colour. 4. Add light soy sauce and stir-fry for about 1 minute. 5. Toss in the cashews, raisins and peas and Stir-fry for another minute. 6. Add salt to taste and mix it well. Rice is now ready for plating!

Paht Chee with Phillip Lim
To have a lucky life, we need to ensure we have high levels of each of the 3 kinds of luck: Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Mankind Luck. Heaven luck is the luck potential we have when we are born, and we can go some way predicting this using Paht Chee analysis. Earth luck comes from our surroundings and we can predict its potential through Feng Shui. Mankind luck comes as a result of our own actions, behaviour and attitudes.

hen we look at our Paht Chee chart, among the most important things we look for is balance in our basket of elements. We need to identify what elements are deemed lucky for us by determining the strength of our self-element. In traditional practice, the consultant would recommend you add the required elements by advising on what colours are lucky for you, and may also recommend that you add the required element into your home. For example, for someone whose self-element is Strong
Earth, and lacking Metal element in their chart, we would ask them to wear colours that represent Metal - purple, silver, gold and white. We may also require that person to place either a bowl of coins beside their bed, or to place 6 dynasty coins tied with red string underneath their pillow. We may even go as far as asking them to sleep on a metal bedframe, as well as having a work desk made of metal. When it comes to Feng Shui however, we identify their Kua numbers based on their date of birth, which separates them into either East or West group people. We then say that East group people have lucky directions of East, North, South and Southeast. While West group people are luckier tapping West, Southwest, Northeast and Northwest. According to the original Pa Kua formula, we also know that each of the 8 directions represents an element. Thus North is of the Water element, South is of the Fire element, West and Northwest are of the Metal element, Southwest and Northeast are of the Earth element, and East and Southeast are of the Wood element. So how do we identify which kind of facing direction for our home would be the most ideal, taking into account both the Kua formula (from which we know our lucky and unlucky directions) as well as the principles of Paht Chee? If you refer to the table included, you can see how we have combined both formulas, making it easier for you to decide the best facing direction for both your Kua number, as well as from a Paht Chee perspective.

Let us look at a couple of examples: For a man born in the year 1965 (Year of the Snake) of Kua 8, whose self-element is Weak Earth: we know that this person belongs to the West group, and his lucky directions are Southwest, Northwest, West and Northeast. When you look at the chart, we see that for him, having a house that faces either Northeast or Southwest would be the most favorable since the chi element that comes from Northeast and Southwest are the elements of Earth. Since his self-element is Weak Earth, this means that Earth element is especially good for him. Of course, it would also be most advantageous for him to sleep and sit facing either Northeast or Southwest. However, if his self-element was Strong Earth, then selecting a house with a main entrance facing Northwest or West would be better for him, since Metal would be one of his beneficial elements. So in this case, he should also position his bed such that he sleeps with his head pointed either to the West or Northwest.

weak wood
Another example: a lady born in 1979 (Year of the Sheep) of Kua number 3, whose self-element is Weak Fire. In this case, her lucky directions would be North, South, East and Southeast. However, when we add the strength of her self-element into the equation, we find that of the four good directions, South, East and Southeast are more suitable for her Weak Fire. This is because South
VWURQJÀUH

brings her Fire element, while East and Southeast bring Wood. So for her, it is most advantageous to have a home that faces South, East or Southeast. She should also sleep in the South, East or Southeast room with her head pointed to one of these three directions as well. Of course, if her self-element were Strong Fire, then the most suitable direction for optimizing her luck would then be North.

ARCHITECTURALLY SPEAKING
DESIGNING LUCKY
SWIMMING POOLS
One of the greater luxuries of life is to be able to relax and enjoy the sanctity of one’s own personal swimming pool. To know that there is one place in the home you are able to unwind and be in touch with nature. So how do we go about designing our pool? There are a few things to think about when it comes to pool designs and these comprise the following factors: Size, Materials and Shape (SMS). Let us discuss the importance of size. There are many ways to design a pool, but there is a limit to how big or small a pool should be before it stops becoming a pool and ends up either as a water feature or lake.
A small sized pool where the walls dominate the space creates a claustrophbic experience
WHAT IS BIG AND WHAT IS SMALL?
Always avoid an oversized pool. No matter how impressive it may be or how much real estate you may own. The reason being, there comes a limit where the pool loses its intimate qualities and starts to imitate a public pool. So how do we begin? Start by thinking of the number of lanes a person is able to swim laterally Avoid pools that are too large for the space
80
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
through the pool. Always stick to 4-5 lanes but never more, as any excess would end up being a swim meet. In addition, always avoid incorporating swimming race lines as part of the design, as this would instantly cheapen the aesthetic quality of the pool. On the other spectrum, you shouldn’t have the pool smaller than two swimming lanes, as this would create a long narrow feature, which would emulate a landscape or lap pool design. The next element to consider is the surrounding areas adjacent to the pool. If we can only afford to set aside a small section of the house to build a pool, make sure that the pool is built in proportion to the surroundings. Avoid placing a small pool where the walls dominate the entire space. Doing so creates a claustrophobic, suffocating experience. Similarly, avoid building a pool that is too large for the space, as this causes the intimate relationship with the water to be lost and you will then start to feel as if you were cast away in an ocean.
www.fswmag.com
DESIGNS AND MATERIALS
Now that we have established the parameters on the size of the pool, we will need to start looking at materials. First off, we need to ensure that the pool materials we select do not match up with any tiles you have selected in any of the bathrooms. The second thing to look at are materials as a means to create features. Consider the use of motifs to create a central feature within the pool rather than the monotonous tile effect. By introducing a logo eff ect on the pool fl oor, you are able to pull the attention of the user to indicate a section of the pool is somewhat diff erent, and special. This is a great technique to use to indicate steps for entry into the pool, or to indicate a feature such as a hot / cold tub or jacuzzi.
The use of motifs as opposed to monotonous patterns helps differentiate different parts of the pool.
A wall of complementary height to the pool creates a balance effect.
The merging of elements can be done through the use of integrating the beauty of stone or timber as a mirror element to the pool. In this example, there is a symbiosis of form and materials between pool and wall. By introducing a wall that is similar in height as to the width of the pool creates a vertical element to balance out the longitudinal element of the pool. But the play of yin and yang, or opposites, allows the vertical dominating form of the wall to succumb to the feminine peanut form of the pool, creating an interesting, visual relationship.

CREATING INTIMACY
Now that we have understood how size and materials can affect our perception in appreciating a pool, how do we design it such that we are able to create a sense of intimacy? This comes down to how adventurous you are in designing the shape of the pool. The easiest shape is the rectilinear form, which is perfect for laps and general pool usage. But to introduce a special element into the pool feature, all we need to do is add a small element. In this scenario, the semi-circular form anchors a central viewing platform where the pool and deck intersects, creating a single prominent vantage from which to soak in the element of water and view. The daring “night sky” effect of this indoor pool offsets the monotony of the regular shape.
In this example, even though it is a public pool, the T-shaped form serves a dual purpose. First it indicates an entry / exit point into the pool, and secondly, it allows the pool to be visually split into two parts, whereby the square element indicates a shallower play area, while the rectilinear element indicates a lap pool. So when you consider incorporating a swimming pool into the home, always think of the following SMS elements. Make sure the size balances out with the surroundings, and is in itself a suitable size for swimming / playing in. And once you have determined the size, think of ways of how to play around with materials either through pattern or form. Finally, look at the shape and see how you can start with a rectilinear form and introduce another shape to create a node to serve as a highlight to the pool.
82
F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
The semi-circular form creates a prominent vantage point.
In this example, the use of LED ceiling lights creates an artificial moonlit sky effect offering the experience of swimming under the stars (indoor). While the shape of the pool may seem to be regular, the use of an irregular wall pattern helps offset any monotony effect the room may have. The T-shape here, as well as making the pool more interesting, indicates an entry + exit point and allows the pool to visually be split into two parts.

8th Month of the Yi Wei Wood Sheep Year (8th Sept 2015 - 7th Oct 2015) In each of the 9 grids, you will find 2 numbers. The number in the upper left corner indicates the annual star and the number in the lower right corner indicates the monthly star. Use a reliable compass to determine yourdirections or locations; the relevant grid for the kind of luck that will affect everyone in the household during that particular month. Also, if the room you occupy is located in the north sector, then you will be experiencing the kind of luck indicated by the stars there.
SOUTHEAST
EAST
NORTHEAST
If your main door or bedroom is in this sector, you will receive unexpected windfalls and increase of opportunities in your life. Heaven shines upon residents of this sector. Enhance good fortune luck by placing a Wish Granting Tree in this part of your home or office. To keep the annual star under control, place a Golden Garuda next to your bed if your bedroom is located here, and hang an All-Metal 6-Rod Windchime in the Southeast of your house to protect against any negative energies.
The monthly five yellow brings health problems related to the liver and also general misfortune to the resident. Use a Bejewelled Dorje and/or Heart Sutra Pagoda to suppress the negative Chi. It is best to move to another room or use another entrance if either your bedroom or main door are located here. Place a pair of Golden Wu Luo on either side of your entrance and a Longevity God in this area for improved health luck. You may also run into cash flow problems. Display a God of Wealth in this area to attract wealth luck. Do NOT renovate this sector this month.
There is good financial and career luck for residents of this sector. Promotions and recognition are forthcoming to those who seize them. This is an extremely lucky this sector this month. Enhance the luck here with a Lotus Roots with Water and a statue of Kwan Kung. If your office room is located here, place a Chinese Calligraphy Set on your desk to enhance creativity and ideas, and display a Golden Arowana to give your career a huge boost. Use a 21 Tara Plaque on your desk to remove all obstacles to success this month.

The monthly illness star joins the annual #7 to bring danger of eye diseases & heart attacks. Wear sunshades to protect your eyes if you reside here. Those with heart conditions should move out of the room for the month. Display a Wu Luo with Garuda by your bed and carry a Health Medallion while you are on the move. Display an Anti-Burglary Totem here to protect against robbery. Young females face troubles related to office politics, as unscrupulous colleagues can’t seem to halt their wagging tongues. Display a Rooster to protect against harm from politicking.
You need to be extremely careful this month as there are high chances of robbery and burglary. This applies to all households, as the burglary star has flown into the middle of the house. Violence and blood is in the cards. Keep this place quiet and avoid arguments. Use a Still Water Feature to calm the fiercely clashing energies here. Carry the Nightspot Amulet keychain to protect you from robbery and accidents, especially when you are out of the house. Avoid late nights and walking alone during night time. Display a figurine of the Red Robe Laughing Buddha to transform bad energy into good.
The annual prosperity star is blocked by the wood star energies this month. A clash of elements occurs in this sector bringing disagreement and the stressful energies of gossip. It is worth watching what you say in daily conversation. There is a tendency for misunderstandings to arise out of nothing at all. Keep a Red Tara Lamp Light on and display a 7 Royal Emblem Plaque here to suppress the inauspicious energies. Display a Lotus Flower with Carps to enhance the annual prosperity star.

You may find the children or females at home more short-tempered than usual this month, especially if the West sector is a ‘public’ area of the house. Try not to spend too much time in this sector as it is unlucky this month. Stress levels and blood pressure can soar, so take it easy if you are prone to health problems. Place a Heart Sutra Pagoda or Metal Pagoda Windchime in this area to control the bad chi. Do not leave candles or stoves unattended here, as there is danger of fire. Display a Laughing Buddha with Ingots to bring prosperity luck.
This is the luckiest sector this month. The prosperity star brings financial success and wealth luck to the whole family, especially the patriarch. Display a 6 Tier Water Feature here to enhance money luck. If your living hall/dining area is located in this sector, you could enjoy increased income! Do not let strangers or workmen that you are not familiar with into your home on these days.
QUARRELS COULD LEAD TO FIST-FIGHTS The atmosphere is moody and quarrelsome on these days. Disagreements can easily get out-ofhand and cause physical fights to ensue! Refrain from participating in any heated arguments. Most importantly, wear the Popularity Scarf and clip the Peace Amulet onto your handbag when going out!

FENG SHUI ASTROLOGY: SEPTEMBER
1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 Although money luck is good, you may find yourself more quick-tempered than usual. This could stem from stress or working too hard. Try to keep your temper under control to avoid negative repercussions. You have promotion luck, but only if you can maintain good relations with your boss and colleagues. Weaken your argumentative tendencies by wearing the color red and displaying a 3 Harmony Warrior on your work desk. Enhance wealth luck with a stack of Gold Bars placed in the North this month. If you play your cards right, you could be welcoming a promotion to a better position and higher salary in the near future.
1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 You re-enter a good luck period which continues till next month. You find yourself more energetic and efficient in doing work. Take on exciting opportunities that come your way. You succeed easily in things you invest in. Friendship luck is good and you will not be short of friends when you need them. Business and career luck are also good. Place a Friendship Windchime in the Northeast to enhance career and business luck. When it comes to love, if you are married, think of some romantic ideas to spice up your love life. For singles, this is not the most fruitful time to expect to meet your life partner. But you can improve this luck by placing a Bejewelled Horse in the South.
1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002
1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003
Luck is neither good nor bad this month, but you need to watch out for your health. There are illness energies in your chart and you will tend to be more accident-prone. Protect your health with a Garuda Wu Lou placed by your bedside. Your wealth luck is good and this is a fruitful time to start building your nest egg. Be alert to outsiders trying to come between you and your spouse/ partner. Your love life walks a hazardous path this month and there will be temptation along the way. Do not let flattery and vanity get the better of you. Protect your relationship by wearing the Double Happiness Symbol as jewellery, or carry it as an amulet in your wallet.
Your luck improves. This is always a good sign for the rest of the year. You will have plenty of support from helpful people this month. Relationships are particularly enjoyable and fruitful, and there is plenty of passion in your life. You are bursting with creative energy and great ideas this month. Avoid wet blankets and those who spoil your fun. There is nothing wrong with enjoying yourself. Harness romance luck with a Magic Mirror – reflect both the moon and your face in the mirror at the same time. Display a Wen Chang Pagoda in the Northeast for career and study luck.

F E N G SHUIWORLD | SEPTEMBER 2015
1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 This will be a successful and fulfilling month. You are on top of your responsibilities and still have plenty of energy to do more! Career and money luck is good and there is a room for promotion or a pay-raise. Do not resist when friends or relatives try to help you. Have an open mind and you will have much to rejoice about. To enhance for career luck, display a Bejewelled Throne in the Northeast. For more opportunities, wear the Opportunities Scarf. This will help smooth away any obstacles in pursuit of your goals. If you are looking for love and romance in your life, wear the Double Happiness Symbol. The best stone to wear this month is the citrine. This will bring luck in all your endeavours.
1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004
Your luck this month is a vast improvement over last month, although it is not entirely auspicious by any means. You will suffer from stress and fatigue, especially if you are working in a company with office politics and other such intrigues. Do not be tempted to play politics yourself, for as they say, “if you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.” Protect yourself by wearing protection from Office Politics Scarf and ensure you do not sit at a desk without support. This is an excellent month to prepare for the coming year, not one to reveal grand ideas or plans just yet. Hold your ingenuity till next month when the stars are more in your favour. You can celebrate when it comes to your love life, which will give you much to smile about this month.

DANGER
1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 This month you are plagued by misfortune luck, which brings danger, loss and injury. Be extra careful when it comes to money, personal safety and risk-taking. It is better to lie low. Do not attempt to show off your knowledge to others. Even though you are helpful by nature, efforts to lend a hand may be seen by some as pushy, so it is best to mind your own business. Wear a Golden Mystic Knot to help bring success into your relationships and dealings with people. Health luck is at top alert. Avoid staying in a East sector bedroom this month. Carry the Golden Pagoda Keychain to control the bad chi affecting you. Try not to get too near anyone who is infectiously sick.
BE CAREFUL
1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 Your luck changes for the better. This is a month full of opportunities. There is change in your chart, which could be a change of residence, change in job, etc. but this change in your life will be a positive one. Your secret weapons this month are your friends. You have powerful comradeship luck, which can be enhanced by keeping a set of your horoscope friends and allies near you at all times. You are also helped by fate and heaven luck. Activate by placing a Precious Minister Windchime in the Southeast. Luck in love is great this month. Enhance for passion and romance by placing a Rooster in the West. Or wear one on your wrist as a Love Bracelet Charm.
1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005
1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006
Your luck takes a turn for the worse this month, and all the good luck you experienced last month could evaporate like a puff of smoke. Do not fear, for the bad luck you experience this month will end as quickly as it started. But for now, lie low and try not to take on too much. Hold off important events like finalizing business deals, getting married or making important decisions. Place a large Heart Sutra Pagoda in the west to suppress bad energy this month and wear gold jewellery to boost the metal energy surrounding you. Build yourself a Wealth Vase to ensure money luck is good throughout the year. Do not speculate or gamble this month.
This is an especially lucky month for you, the kind that brings big breaks and opportunities. There are so many coming your way that you’ll wish there were more of you so you can take advantage of them! Enjoy the wealth, money and relationship luck heading in your direction. But do not let your good fortune get to your head, or it may be short-lived. Make yourself a wealth vase to lock in the good wealth energy of this month, as it will be some time before your money luck is this good again. Stay focused, driven and single-minded about your ambitions and you will be able to realize them this month. Wear the Wealth and Power Medallion and display a Wish Granting Tree in northwest.

The table here shows the locations of your body’s vitality points on each day of the month. Getting bruised or injured, or performing surgical operations on the joints or organs located at or near these points weakens your life-span and vitality considerably and can be fatal if your life-force is already low. DAUGHTER’S BEDROOM HAS THE ILLNESS STAR
Q
According to the Flying Star chart, my apartment faces East2/3. This means that my daughter’s bedroom has the illness star! According to Lillian Too’s book, this is a really bad star that can cause serious diseases and even death. I’m scared for her. What should I do?
A
The illness 2 can be deadly if it is not controlled. The good news is that this star is not difficult to suppress. You need metal energy, and powerful feng shui symbols that can suppress illness. The best antidote is the Garuda image. Place a Garuda image and 2 Golden Wu Lou cures in your daughter’s room. This will suppress the 2. Next year, the 2 becomes very strong – so increase the number of Wu Lous in her bedroom. I also highly recommend inviting the image of the Medicine Buddha Mandala and hang it inside her room.
FAILED DRIVING TEST THREE TIMES IN A ROW
Q
I live in Canada and have failed my driving test 3 times in a row. I know how to drive but somehow, on test days I can’t seem to make a good judgements when driving. I’ve even tried picking a lucky time and date but still no success. I’m born in the Year of the Snake.
A
You seem to have some kind of karmic blockage with “transport”. I suggest that you make some donations towards any charity that cares for the welfare of horses. It is also a good idea to chant Vajrasattva’s mantra 21 times every night before going to bed to remove obstacles: OM VAJRASATTVA HUM. Then, offer incense often to all your local spirit deities and ask for their help in making you pass your car test. You should also chant the mantra of Manjushri every day – OM AH RAPA CHANA DHIH as this will increase your intelligence and good judgement. Make sure you offer incense inside the car you are driving as well – as cars also have local deities! Make sure you do this on exam day! You will definitely see a difference!
BEES BUILDING A NEST AT MY HOUSE
Q A
Lately I have been noticing swarms of bees flying around my car porch area. I think they are building a hive under my car porch roof. Is this a good or bad sign? What should I do? I can’t keep them! Whenever bees make a nest in your home it’s always a good sign! If you’re in business it could mean a meaty new contract or new money-making opportunity. If you are a working professional – this could indicate a promotion or career change. As you can’t keep them, please enlist the help of a professional bee keeper who can safely transport the hive somewhere else. Whatever you do please do NOT burn them or destroy their nest, as this creates seriously bad karma for you!

I HAVE NO LUCK IN LOVE
Q
My relationships always fall apart after a few months. I have bathrooms in the Southwest. I’ve tried to suppress this with mirrors on the doors and 5 rod windchimes inside the toilet but things have not changed. I’ve also activated SW corners of my living room and bedroom but not much has changed. Help! I’m 29 years old.
A
Poor thing. Southwest bathrooms are not easy to remedy and this is one of the most basic feng shui taboos to avoid. I suggest you start looking for a new place to live which does not have this problem. In the meantime, you can enlist the help of the Red Goddess of Love. Wear her scarf daily and preferably wear her mantra necklace OM TARE TAM SOHA. It will be very helpful if you chant this mantra daily as well. Red Tara removes obstacles to finding stable relationships – she will not only help bring someone suitable into your life, she will also support you in finding a new place that has better feng shui for you. Good luck!
MY MOTHER-INLAW IS POISONING US WITH BLEACH
Q
My husband and I have been carers of my 90 year old mother-in-law for 23 years. We discovered she has been secretly poisoning us with Clorox! She is also abusive as my husband is her least favourite child. She curses at us every day, warning us that we will die before her. We look after her as this was my father-in-law’s final death wish! We are Tibetan Buddhists and I believe the Buddhas have saved us from death even after ingesting these poisons. But what can we do? We can’t put her in home, but I don’t want us to die.
A
I’m so sorry to read about this. Old women are naturally crotchety and difficult. You are both repaying some kind of karmic debt with her... think of it like this and you will find it easier to be patient and tolerant. Meanwhile, install locks on your cupboards to store away all the Clorox and whatever poisons you have in your home. I strongly recommend you hang Guru Rinpoche’s Dusum Sangye plaque in her bedroom and chant Guru Rinpoche’s Dusum Sangye prayer for her as I suspect she is under some kind of negative spirit influence. For you and husband, I recommend wearing Tara’s amulets and chanting Goddess TARA’s mantra: OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA. Tara will protect you from poison and whatever curses your mother-in-law hurls at the both of you. You will also start to see a real change in your mother-in-law.

FEMALE STUDEN’T CLIMBED OVER HUSBAND’S HEAD DURING HER “TIME OF THE MONTH”
Q
My husband allowed one of his female teenage students to climb over his head and sit on his shoulder while tying a rope on the tree. Apparently she was having her period at the time! My mother-in-law was horrified when I told her and says this will bring serious bad luck to my husband! Is it true? And what can I do to get rid of this bad luck?
A
I would have to agree with your mother-inlaw. In fact, this could cause your husband to develop an unwelcome fondness over that young girl! You need to clear this INSTANTLY. Make a special cleansing water with this recipe: place petals from seven different kinds of flowers, kaffir lime leaves and pomelo leaves into a big bucket of water. Have your husband wash his hair and his entire body with this water for seven days in a row. This should dispel the bad luck. This is best done during the waning cycle of the moon (between full moon and new moon).
IS MY EMPTY FISH TANK CAUSING ME BAD LUCK?
Q A
Does an empty fish tank in our house bring bad luck?
Oh dear! This is a very bad feng shui taboo. You must never display an empty or broken fish tank inside your home! If this is your wealth corner, it can cause you to lose your wealth and source of income. Wrap it up and keep it away in the store room if you’re not using your fish tank. Throw it away if it is broken. Of course, the best is to use the fish tank and fill it with water. Even if you do not have fishes inside, growing aquatic plants and having constant bubbling water can be very beneficial for you. Keep the water clean at all times. But do not keep unmoving water in the tank – this is also not good.
