INTRODUCTION
Once the mghtiest and most important realm in the known world, today Evn infuence is confined to a very lmited regon. Snce the end of the wars aganst the humans whch led to the creation of the Empre, the Elves have played a rather nsignifcant role in the world. Withdrawn deep into the forest of lconessa, for a long time they had ltte contact wth other races. Ony occasionaly dd the "forest devils, as human settlers cal them, come forth to destroy all traces of human intruson into ther holy forests. Ths stuation has changed due to the rads of the Empires former southern provnces nto the forests and the appear ance of the warords of han n the Elvin setted northern territory hese two factors and the smultaneous ncrease in populaton among the trbes of Thanarl (the young forest dweling Elves) has recenty necessitated the lves once agan taking a more actve part n word events Among the nobility of the mpre there s a growing interest in finding out more about the southern forests
he possibility of acquirng abundant natural resources, as well as reports by merchants from the southern provinces who have dealngs with men that have suc cessfuly penetrated the forests have led many nobles of the southern Empire to consder expeditons into the forests of conessa For the Thanans, the lves are simply people of the forest whom they fght as soon as ther shps and on the wooded coast. For the woodcutters and Marenga gather ers from the southern provinces, the lves are no more than dangerous natives who work counter to the econom c interests of shippng companes, drug dealers and woodcutters Only a few people suspect that the forests of nconessa contnue to concea at least a part of the might that once ruled the word
THE REALM OF THE ELVES
lconessa, as the realm of the Elves is caled les southwest of the Empire n a gant woodland regon. This forest s so ancent that some of the giant trees n its mdst are the size of small mountans Nobody can remember the time when these trees were mere sap ngs The forest has, due to centures of symbiotic nteracton wth the vng reemen, deveop a con scousness of ts own
The Norh
The northern border of conessa s formed by plains whch adjon the mperal provnces of Pandyom and Annakam. Human settlers contnually try to gain a foothold on these plans, but abandon them ust as quckly The harvests are poor, despte the rch soil; the cattle disappear at nght from the fieds and predators reguarly clam vctms. Occasonally the "forest devils will attack lone farmsteads and ki a the nhabtants. n the forest caed "Galdlor ("bright felds), which lies south of this plan, wanders the warrior fellowshp of Uncorn Riders, forever foowng the Uncorn herds. The Thanari clans of the north stay n the forest and ony rarey venture forth onto the plan.

he East To the northeast, lconessa borders an inhosp itabe mountain range. These mountains contain the ream of Zahra which is home to the race of Dwarves he Dwarves of ahra and the lves of lconessa are uneasy neighbours. oth people avod one another, though sometmes blood is spilled he telea range, an extenson ofthe mountains of a hra reaches far into lconessa. Here human slaves mine mthrl n the pits of Cunn which the Ilah Ri turn into weapons and works of art. In the telea range at the summit of a hgh mountain les the eyrie of the egasus Riders in the fortress ofthe ellor (grove of the clouds) . he rver Valnor forms th e southern border of conessa which adjoins ahra Lately merchants of the southern
provinces have used the Valnor to ntrude deep into conessa The route over the mountains is cosed to human intrusion because even though the Dwarves of Zahra trade with the southern provinces, they will not allow any caravan over the mountain passes
he Coasts he rest of the border of lconessa is more o r less formed of wooded coastline which s easly reached from without he only exceptions are the steep cliffs on the coast of Far alla n, which s turned toward the Strait of Thain This easy acces s from the sea represents an ncreasing threat to the ream of the lves. n the south shps from the southern provinces contnue to land n the west and

The Va K The llah Ri ae foma lly uled by the Vala Ri the coun cil of the eldes t who ae ele cted evey ifty yeas by epe senatives of he families. The famiies choose thei epesentatives based on age social standing and othe simila atibutes. As time went on many of the olde Elves wee less inteested in he demands of daily life and lost the eadiness to paticipate in the p oliical life of the ealm So ae th e xodus moe and moe seas wee emoved om the dwindling coun cl hal l esently thee ae only seven lla h R i on the Vala Ri and these stem lagely fom the "younge geneations. Fist the two epesentatives o the landownes shou ld be mentione d Ths goup is becoming less sgnificant among
the llah R i, si ce they are becomig more depedet o the Thaari for support. he large platatios i the forests cotiue to be worked by huma slaves, who through the use of magic ad drugs are k ept i the state of igorat bliss O these platatios, drugs, exotic foods ad arcotic driks are maufactured, which form the basis for the dissolute lives of the llah R. Aother of the Athulai is chose from amog the wizards agic is cosidered to be oe of the most importat schools of thought i which the llah Ri, eve though weary of physical activities, cotiue to be active. agic is , with a few exceptios, practiced oly by male llah Ri, sice they are traditioally iclied toward cotrollig ad overcomig thigs The wizards are called Dyreas ("scholars) The emale versio of Elvi magic is practiced by the Elves that are a part of the priesthood. Their magic is differet from the male versi o, i that it doest rely o coercio, or does it see the mid as the allpowerful force These priests are called oreaths ("teachers) ad provide a Athulai as well . Oe or two members of the coucil stem from the decadet city dwellig circles of opulet older llah Ri ad their youg followers It is ot clear whether these Elves are chose because of their participato i lavish, ui hibited feasts, or are simply picked due to their great beauty Sometimes the choice is a great artist, philoso pher or poet. At times these lves have bee kow to decide who will participate i the coucil by drawig lots his group of Elves sees workig with the coucil as a complete waste of time, which oly keeps them from gatherig other more "importat experieces However, their umbers are large eough that they regularly maage to elect oe or two members to the cou cil. These members ar e suppos ed to keep the coucil from iterfer ig i the affairs of the remaiig ll ah R i Aother, also ot geder specific coucil mem ber, comes from amog the spiritual warrior class of the llah Ri These warriors attempt to attai the mu ch sought after state of Oteath ("wisdom) through the practice of a old, but oce agai popular philosophy This philosophy was developed durig the Secod Age, whe Sh Karath, the rice of Destructio, egulfed the lvi realm i war ay Elves realized the that war, i spite of all its horrors, allows for great expasio of oes exper ieces. couterig cruelty ad the spillig of blood i previ ously ukow quatities gave them ew isights ito the ature of creatio These experieces left their mark amog the llah Ri, ad maifest themselves today i the exploitatio of the slaves ad the lack of compassio with which they kill ay of the warlike Elves also realiz ed that through the absolute mas tery of their weapos, a state of mid co uld be obtaied which brigs them closer to their goal, Otreath They decided to fid their spiritual path by combiig their meditatio techiques with mastery of their bodies I the Secod Age, th is movemet, called Orea Vaar ("frieds of the blade), formed the elite core of the professioal military of the lves. resetly oly about
500 llah Ri cotiue to follow this philosophy actively. However, may High lves have followed this school of thought at some poit i their lives, or ha ve served i the military ad have a fairly high level of military traiig Therefore, i theory, ha lf of the llah R i could be mo bilized for the Valar R i host The pro blem is that most of the llah Ri fid the way of Orea Vaar to be too da gerous ad feel it is ot useful , ad are thus uwillig to risk their valuable lives ay also see the slaughter of eemies as si mply too borig The last, oly partia lly accepted Athulai of the Valar Ri, is a cla leader of the Thaaril. He is preset to help coordiate relatios betwee the two groups. Lately this has become a difficult task, sice eve though the Thaaril theoretically are pledg ed to be obediet to the llah Ri, logstadig oivolvemet of the coucil i their affairs has give the clas more autoomy Throughout the cetures the llah Ri were cotet to be free of iflueces from beyod the forest ad wated othig to itrude o their isolati o C urretly, however, due to the successful campaigs of the Thaiias, the Valar Ri are oce agai takig part i the affairs of the Thaaril he Thaaril had gotte used to leavig their older relatives i the cities aloe, except to suppl y them with food retur they received artu lly costructed objects, which the llah R i produced i search of ew experieces ay of the cla Elves view ths growig iterest of the llah Ri i their ives with disapproval, sice it is clearly liked to a desire to rule ove them.
Physical Characteristics of the Eves lves have differet physical characteristics depedig o their heritage. The ldest, who call themselves "llah Ri ("atio of kigs), are very sleder ad have a aura of arrogace about them at all times, sice they see themselves as superior to all other livig beigs. hey regulate their metabolism through the use of a strict metal discipli e, so that there is o fat o their body. his c haracteristic accordig to the aesthetic requiremets of the llah Ri ha s, sice the age of lvi domiace, allowed them to differetiate themselves from the races with more body mass, such as Orcs or humas Their withdraw existece gives them a very ligh t ski colour Their hair is usuall y wor log ad is lig ht blod or white Though may of the llah Ri d ye their hair with exotic colours, the domiat colour is usua lly determied by curret fashio. heir eye colour is commoly light blue, but both violet ad silver toes are foud amog them The Thaaril appear, sice they live closer to ature, more muscular ad wiry tha the llah Ri Their ski is darker tha their older High Elf cousis eir hair colour commoly has more dark brow toes th eir eyes, ho w ever, are s imilar to those of their relatives hey have a chee rful demeaour ad a deep app reciatio for life that makes them appear very attractive to most thikig beigs, if they decide to give these 'forest devils a chace

THE SECOND AGE The Secod Age is kow to the Elve s as the Age o The Great War After Sh Karath created the demos out ofthe essece o his eteral deaths, h e sought a way to sed them to the earth so that they could begi their battle with the Elves. To accompli sh this they irst had to eave the state o oli vig i whic h they ad the ir master existed, sice olivig ad l ife could ever co exist i the same place. Where there was matter there could ot be omatter. So ShKarath decided to give his creatios a corporeal vess el, ma de up o elemets that were closest to olivig H e ecased his demos i bodies o ice ad ire Thus these destructive powers separated life from the olie hidde withi them ad mad e it possibe for the demos to take physical form Herei also lies the explaatio for the iheret istabiity of the demos, who require strog spells i order to exist i the world Sh karath formed his first two sos ito the Ice Demo eribulos Da Hurrorco ad the Fire Demo KrakTha He made t hem the geerals o his war agaist the Eves a d set them together with their demo hordes ito the lads of the Elves. Th e Ice Demo bega his acts of destructio i the orth, the Fire D emo i the south. Everywhere they wet, the creatures o olife destroyed all life. Thus the orther haf of the world was tured ito a wastelad covered i ice a d the oce ertile lads o the south were tured ito a edless desert of sad ad slag
agaist the demos ad t o ocus all the stregth o the Elves to that task The priestesses were supposed to call o the other Goddess or aid or her child re Th e Dyreas were ot to attempt to cotro ature itse, but istead to master all metal powers related to the spirits of Elves, aimals or eve demos Eve though some of them secretly sought to cotrol ature, most o them wet alog with the decisio The Valar R i also decided to use the s ecret of the meta to make weapos, which would make up or the greater physical abilities of the demos Thus th e frieds of the blade , the Ore a Vaar, were created Usig their ewly created weapos, these Elves dedicated themselves to the deece o their peope with great ethusiasm They were the irst to take u p the fight agaist the demos. t was some time beore the Eves were irst able to baish some of the demos from the earth by destroyig their material forms, but the rampage of the childre o Sh Karath was at least held i ch eck Durig this period of resistace, the oce peaceful Evi people became a atio o beigs, dedica ted oy to war, ad so they lost much of their atural iocece However, there were too may demos to mak e victory over thei r hordes possib le, especially sice the meagre birth rate amog the Elves cotributed to reducig their umbers. So the oldest survivig oreaths begged the other Goddess or advice, ho pig to keep the Eves from beig destroyed Oe ight their request was heard ad the Goddess set them a dream. She showed the oreath Adralliaa the place where the cave above the earth was hidde ad grated h er a gim pse o a room that the Elves had bee uable to ope durig their leavetakig durig the First Age this room there were our swords.
The peaceful Eves were o match for the demos. Wheever the demos foud Elvi settlemets they slaughtered al the ihabitats ad destroyed the lad ad all ife o it. The oy optio left to the Elves was light. Aer a ew years most of the s urvivors of the Age of lety met i order to decide what to do The priestesses wated to retur to the cave above the earth a d await the ed o the destructio They argued that o ife coul d ever be completely victorious because otherwise its ow existece, which was bor oy i cotrast to ie, would be destroyed However, the c ave above the earth co uld ot be oud, so this path was closed to them
these swords there resided g reat power, because they represeted the prima powers of life i orm of the elemets o ire, ice, water ad air Adraiaa realized that Sh Karath had used two of these powers to give his chi dre a bodily form, ad that these weapos were the power eeded to reverse this process ad to baish th e demos for good
The Dyreas, the wizards o the Elvi people, proposed orcig the powers of ature to defed themseves a gaist the demos. The oreaths were shocked ad o course refused to cosider this optio. Other Elves were of the opiio that the demos sho uld be ought with their ow weapos These Elves had see so much death ad sufferig durig their fight that their hearts had h ardeed ad they had moved a step closer to the olife. However, the demos were strog ad powerul ad the Eves were ot i a positio to defeat them .
Thereore a troop of Ore a Vaar, accomp aied by mighty Dyreas ad oreaths, was set to retrieve these swords rom the cave above th e earth . Aer oe year ie of the oe hudred origia Elves retured Their path had bee hard ad ull o dager, but they retured with the eemetal swords These ie Elves were celebrated by their brothers ad sisters ad great hoours were bestowed upo them . They were the irst lords amog th e Elves, a d they were give more power over the Evi people tha eve the Valar R i had
There were log argumets ad for the first time the Elves refused to liste to the wisdom of the oreaths Fially they decided to form the Valar Ri, a coucil, which would make decisios or the people ad guide their destiy. The members o this coucil were to be elected by the ihabitats of each settlemet ad were called Athulai. Thus the High Co ucil of the Elves was created, ad it formed thereater the goverig body of the Elvi realm. The Vaar Ri, i which the priestesses had oly a small voice, decided to take up the ight
The oreaths ad the Dyreas bega usig t he power of the swords to create a mighty spel of baishmet desiged to drive the demos rom the surace of the earth forever ut as the spe took effect, it becam e clea r that the power maifested i the el emetal swords had to be put directly ito the hearts of their eemies i order to have a efect

So the two greatest warriors of the Orea Vaar armed themseves i order to take o this dagerous task.

At the ed of the storm there were great tears the fabri of reaity he demos, ow robbed of their protetive hu s, were suked bak ito the ealm of oife. WIZRD is used for every id of wizard irrespective of their descriptio as oreath, Dyrea ard ad so forth. The remars cocerig heroes also apply BEHEMOH is used for Dragos ad dragole crea tures as well as Giats if these are cassed as arge lemets. Therefore, commaders of the vi army are subject to certai limitatios. roops, eroes, and commanders o an Evn army are divided into our categores anari, Ila Ri, Centaurs and reemen
The reverse side of every vi recruitmet card idicates to which of these categores a uit or model belogs. Every ero or commander of an Evn army can ony command troops beongng to s own category e ancient eroes o te Ia Ri cannot command anyone

Units This chapter describes all troop types that are avalable to an army of lconessa Elvin commanders, heroes wizards and magical artefacts are described in chapters Characters and Artefacts respectively. We suggest that you have the relevant recruitment cards at hand when you study the following descriptions Special rules applying to particular troop types are printed here and, in shorter versions, on the recruitment cards In case of doubt the description given here, being more detailed, takes precedence
pike has, due to its special tip a 'battle facto 10 versus cavalry, 9 versus infanry instead of a battle factor 9 and . he longknife carried by some troops has due to its size, an effect between a hand- and an improvised weapon and thus has a 'bate factor The values given on the recruitment cards also reflect the number and (in the case of melee) size of the models and are thus different rom the aforementioned values
INITIATIVE
The images depicted in this book for the decoration of standards and shields of the Thanaril llah Ri and the Centaurs are available as decals in DEMONWORLD pack 32 We have also noted the article number of the DEMON WORLD miniatures pack which you will need to repre sent a particular unit, commander wizard or engine of war. Futher information about new miniatures for Elves and other armies can be obtained from your dealer directly from Ra Partha Europe Ltd or on the nterne at wwwdemonwordgames.com.
ELVIN WEAPONS
Many of the units described herein possess weapons orged with particular care and skill or are at least in part made of special materials most often mithril These weapons thus have different battle factors or (n the case o missile weapons) ranges, than those described in the DEMONWORLD basic game. A Elvin longbow has a 'batle factor 14 hexes: 5' instead of a norma longbow 2 hexes: Certain Elvin long bowmen have access to arows wth mithil ips which have a 'batte factor 14 exes 6 An Evn bow has a 'batte factor 0 hexes: 4 instead of a noma bows '9 hexes A mitri double-anded swod has a 'batte factor 10 instead of battle factor ; a mitrl sword has a 'batte factor 7 instead of a battle factor A mithril lance has a 'batte facto 8 instead of a battle factor A mitrl

Many Elves possess weapon skills and all of them have an initiative of at east 3 Therefore several neighbouring elements of Elves wil often strike first in melee and will score a result that will be at least below the necessary base number. his is dealt with as described in the rulebook on page 69 for ALL attacking elements it has to be announced before roling the dice against which opponent the melee attack is directed An element that gains a second attack rolls for this attack MMEDATELY, before the next element rolls its dice This is also true if afer the second attack a neighbouring element suddeny is no longer facing its announced/ previously chosen opponent (and thus is unable to fight hand to hand in this phase) Even such an element is not allowed to roll its die at nothing and then (with an appropriate result) move one hex so as to meet a new opponent A very low number in a melee repesents a successful breakthrough that surprises friend and foe alike Therefore it is not allowed that neighbourng ele ments come to agreements, or that they simply wait in order to see what the neighbouring elements accomplish before announcing their own melee attack
CLANTROOPS OF THE THANARIL
The Elvin clans were founded after the exodus to the forests of lconessa by the followers of the Elvin priestess es and lords who, under the direction of the Loreath anariel wanted to return to the lifestyle of the Second Age Due to the constant threat posed by encroaching armed bands of humans in the early years, it became necessary for the clans to integrate a strong warlike element into their lives. hey caled themselves the
